[Q] Screen dead, need to RUU to stock and S-ON. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everything works except the screen. I can even make calls and use navigation/music with voice commands.
I plan on taking it back to Verizon for a replacement. Obviously, for this to work, it has to be stock.
I have all the appropriate files (3.26.605.1 RUU and Unrevoked S-ON tool). But have no idea how to run them without control of the phone. ADB maybe?
Any advice would be awesome. If I can't figure it out I'm just going to nuke the phone with an industrial electromagnet.
Edit: This is not an SLCD/OLED problem. I did not flash anything to screw up the screen. It's physically dead and I can't take the phone apart to check the screen connections without destroying the warranty stickers. If Verizon is a pain about replacing it, I'll fix it myself.
Edit 2: See below for final questions before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

Download the ruu in PB131IMG.zip format from Doug pistons website here: http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/bui...and-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip
Put it on your SD card using adb push and then restart your phone into hboot and then press up after waiting a little bit (this triggers the update) and then wait while it overwrites everything

You could also download the stock ruu.exe. With your phone plugged into the pc run it and it will return you to stock. Then run Unrevoked S-ON tool to relock your bootloader.

But you have to run S-ON in CWM right? So if you ran the RUU it would put you back to stock recovery, and you couldn't run S-ON. So how does one go about flashing S-ON in recovery blind?

I think the s-on tool is ran via your pc, w/ your phone plugged in. The only issues being that if you ruu to stock you may have to reenable USB debugging.

no, you must have clockwork mod installed to s-on, I sugest doing it before RUU other wise ur stock with root S-OFF still....

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions guys. I'm about to start trying this out.
I'm using androidscreencast and the ddms in the SDK to control the phone. I just don't want to do the steps in the wrong order and not be able to finish.
As it stands, I'm going to flash the Unrevoked S-ON .zip first, then reboot and flash the stock PB31IMG.
Anyone have any objections? Pretty sure I'm only going to get one shot at this. I won't be able to tell if it worked because I won't be able to re-enable USB debugging blind.
Thanks so much.

Attempted to Update my HBoot version and now have a bricked INC..Help! 10 bucks

I tried to update my Hboot the other day to .92 i believe from .78. Thinking it was as simple as flashing it through bootloader and thats it. I was stuck at the white htc screen for hours so I figured I was screwed. I wiped everything with no luck and then I flashed something so now my HBoot is 0.77.0000 and my Radio is 1.00.03.04.06. I was previously running CM7 nightlies. After flashing whatever zip I did I was trying to reverse what I did by "downgrading" and what I did was delete everything. I cant boot and I also dont have recovery anymore. I can only use Bootloader. PLease any help I can get is appreciated. If u can tell me how to fix this ill make a 10 dollar donation to your paypal. My e-mail is [email protected] if u want me e-mail any information. Thanks a ton
Try the following link.
You may need to get an usb sd card reader. That way you can put the needed files using your pc.
I am sure someone more knowledgeable will come along to help you.
I read somewhere that if you can get to the bootloader, it might have not neen bricked yet.
http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=77
Download this file
http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto....605.1_RUU.zip
Rename it to PB31IMG.zip, put it on the root of your SD card, Boot into the bootloader (hold vol- and pwr) and let it run the update. After it is done you will be back to a stock 2.2.
I forgot to mention in my initial post that I also updated my radio to the newest 2.15 but still had recovery after I did that and after that is when I tried to downgrade everything and lost my recovery. Didnt know if that makes a difference or not. Thanks for the quick replies
Goos3y that link you sent me says 404 not found.
ok there is hope. I am a littl confused though. Do you have recovery?
No i do not have recovery only hboot. I am using my lady's Droid X with my SD card to put any files on the card that I need to.
http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=108 download the PB31IMG.zip put it on the root of the sd card and flash through bootloader as previously stated. Make sure it is named PB31IMG.zip or it wont get recognized. You will loose root and have S on. Thank doug piston for the dl.

this is not in the right section but if you can still get into recovery restore a working nandroid back up. after that go to backup and restore>advanced restore and restore your boot image. im pretty sure upgrading you hboot erases your boot image.
EDIT: I saw that someone posted a PB31IMG up earlier. I'd try that one first,
This is for the RUU exe.
An RUU is a program which links to any phone that can get into bootloader, and installs a completely unrooted stock image to your phone. It can be done either by using the linked program (an exe) or getting an ruu version that is a zip and running it on bootloader with a specific filename "PB31IMG.zip"
This tutorial is for the EXE version linked below.
WARNING: I have no idea what happens if this is used on an SLCD incredible.
Therefore, you need to know what kind of screen you have, and I'm no expert on that.
DONT use this RUU if you find out you have an SLCD screen.
I am not sure whether android sdk tools or htc usb drivers are nessesary for the ruu, so if anyone can comment on the necessity of these, i would appreciate it.
Heres what you need:
1. A PC
2. The RUU exe file
3. a cable to connect the PC to your phone
4. The knowledge of whether your phone is an SLCD or not.
Instructions:
1. Hook up your phone to the computer
2. Put the phone into hboot
3. Run the ruu
4. If it messes up at the usb detection thing, keep the phone plugged in, exit the ruu program, and then run it again. It should work then.
At the end of this process you should have a fully functional unrooted froyo incredible.
You dont need to give anyone $10. We all want your phone to work.

You will lose root (easy to get back) but will still be S-off.
You can either use the PB31IMG or the .exe method. Just grab the files off doug piston's website. We've had a lot of problems with SLCD owners grabbing the RUU off youtube and other sites then having a screen that no longer works.
I tried the PB31IMG zip method but in hboot after searching through the file it says no image. I am going to try the RUU now. Do i need to have the android sdk stuff on this computer for the RUU to run correctly? I am using a different laptop, one which does not have the driver files installed that I needed to initially root my INC.?

Unfortunately Marty, its not easy to tell which is amoled and SLCD without having the phone on to verify that its hardware revision is 002 or 003.
002=amoled
003=slcd
If you still have the box i'd recommend looking at it.
I thought you loosed s-off but ok. Did you make sure the PB31IMG.zip was not named .zip.zip?

Well, if you run it without them, and it doesnt work, it wont make anything worse. It just wont work, and then youll know. It probably has nothing to do with the SDK and more to do with HBOOT USB drivers. I would say go for it without any of that.
The most important thing you can know is that your incredible is not bricked. Its totally fixable.
I screwed mine up in precisely the same fashion early on, and used the EXE with good success.
Im positive. I got the phone in august of 10 through verizon. I dont have the box anymore. I have looked into it before and think "think" I have the amoled screen.

August = AMOLED
SLCD didnt start to ship until september.
The RUU is loading now. Its at 76% on Updating system. So, if this does work where does my phone stand? Do I need to re-root get s-off and things of that nature?
You will still have s-off. Your phone will be on a .92 hboot with the 2.15 radio. You will need to either rerun the root tool to get recovery back or use a recovery that is flashable through hboot. If using the PB31IMG didn't work for you before I suggest rerunning the tool.
Once recovery is installed do not attempt to restore from within recovery, instead download another rom and flash it through recovery.
Just wanted to drop back in and say thanks to everyone who helped me get my INC back. I really appreciate it and I can throw the BB Storm back in the closet!

Latest 1 Click Root

Hi all,
I rooted my evo 4G forever ago, but a friend of mine recently tried to root her phone and simply has the big exclamation mark on it now. I'm not sure what she did, but she's bringing it over tonight. I was wondering, does anyone have any idea what is needed to get that sucker back up and running?
Will it respond to the latest 1 click roots? unrevoked? simple root? what's the game plan?
If you get the exclamation mark when trying to get into recovery, that means you're rooted with no recovery. When she gets to the bootloader, is she s-off?
If s-off, then rooted, and then flash the file I attached in the bootloader. Place on sdcard, boot into the bootloader, apply update, reboot, reboot into recovery, then you'll be on amon_ra 2.4 recovery.
And for latest 1 click, unrevoked. Download the hboot drivers, install then uninstall htc sync, enable usb debugging on phone, from applications > development.
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
IF you can only get into the bootloader, phone not booting, ect, run the 3.70 RUU. Rename the file to PC36IMG, then place on the root of the sdcard, flash in the bootloader like previously. The RUU will return you to stock, unrooted; then you can root using unrevoked.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
Thanks. She's dropping the phone off tonight. Now I've got the plan of what to do! I'll execute accordingly, and update if there's any odd snags, but I assume there will be none.
Thanks again.

You shouldn't, but if she doesn't stick around, when you return it, you should just ham it up just cause.
And if you do incur trouble, post in the thread here or shoot me a pm.

[Q] S-Off questions and curiosities

I can see that more is possible when you s-off but I need to know some things before I look at doing it:
Is it better to start from scratch: i.e unroot, re-root using unrevoked, THEN s-off my phone?
Will any AMOLED WWE RUU be good enough to unroot? (if its beter that i do)
For those of you reading this that have done it, which method do you reccomend? (Virtualbox, CD or whatever)
Thank you for any and all replies, I've already ruined one phone on my contract (i tried to OEM update after rooting stock rom :/) and i REEEEALLY don't wanna have to go thru that again. Honestly any and all tips other than answers to my questions are most welcome!
**Matty Matt**
Was your phone on Orange FW when you got it? If so, you'll need a gold card to flash a non-Orange RUU. If you're OK with this, use this one:
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
I'd say do a nandroid backup of what you've got, go back to stock and reroot then S-OFF and then restore your backup.
As for doing the S-OFF, burn it to a CD and boot PC from the CD

1) You won't need to unroot, I S-OFF'd when I was using Oxygen RC1 and it was unaffected.
2) Any WWE RUU should suffice, but you won't need to unroot.
3)CD is by far, far, far the easiest method.
thanks for that, and thanks for the link! I believe there's also a TUT on theunlockr.com that I found with some tips too.
EDIT: thanks Kalavere so at the moment it's CD: 2 USB and Virtualbox: 0 LOL
+1 for not unrooting. In fact have a read of this thread I posted when I was trying to s-off. Never did get to the bottom of it, but it seems something in rooting stock rom and creating a goldcard stopped me from doing it.
Once I flashed a custom rom it was fine!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987739
Yes CD method for sure.
Interesting, so by the looks of things it would save me hassle by not un-rooting! right well I think i'm gonna give this a bash this weekend/tonight depending when i have more time. Keep the advice/experiences coming guys!
It's not the hassle, it's just I prefer to do things properly and I've never had any issues doing it from stock. As said, do a nandroid before you unroot and you'll be good to go back to the ROM you're currently using once you're all done

AlphaRev 1.5 How To Get S-OFF
I am writing this from memory as I S-OFFed my phone sometime ago but here is how to do it. No responsibility if you brick your phone. This process is dangerous and may brick your phone so if you do not have a good reason to do it or do not know what it is, don't do it! Your phone should be already rooted for this to work.
1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/
2. Download AlphaRev 1.5 HBOOT reflash utility (first download link on the page)
3. Burn to CD / put on USD Stick using UNetbootin / Create VM (CD is the preferred way to do it ... "safer")
4. Boot computer from CD/USB while the phone is DISCONNECTED!
5. When prompted connect phone to computer using USB cable and follow instructions. Phone doesn't have to be in fastboot or anything, the program will reboot your phone for you. There are three steps to the entire process. Once you press enter and aknowledge that the process may brick you phone ... go make tea/coffee as it will take 10-15 minutes. DO NOT DISCONNECT your phone from the computer under any circumstances UNLESS EXPLICITLY TOLD THAT IT IS OK TO DO SO or you WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!
6. Eventually you will be prompted to press any key to shut down the computer, that your S-OFF was a success and that you can enjoy your phone to the fullest now. Your phone will be in fastboot mode (if I remember correctly or may be rebooted fully). To check if you have S-OFF boot into fastboot and it should say ***AlphaRev*** and your HBOOT should be 0.93.001 now as in the screenshots posted above. Your splash boot image would have also changed (Search XDA for how to change your splash1 as it is doable in a few easy steps with "any" image).
Voila, you have S-OFF. You ROM should remain as is (the process only replaces HBOOT) while your recovery may or may not be there.

go back to stock with a RUU.
i tried to S-OFF while running GingerVillain and it didnt work, i thought i bricked my phone since it went past -STEP 3 DONT PULL BATTERY OR YOU WILL BRICK THE DEVICE- and it stopped working so i pulled the battery
then went to stock and rooted and S-OFFed without any problems
well as other replies, don't need to unroot But makes sure that the stock rooted rom you are running the process S-Off is using the folder /data of your system so it's advice not use data2sd or whatever 2sd... more there
I used the usb boot, takes 5 minutes only, rooted stock rom 2.29...
Virtualbox is probably the safest method, but is does take a lot more setup
AmonRa 2.0.1 | PVT4 40000 S-Off Alpharev 1.8| HBoot 0.93.1000 | Radio 5.17.05.08 | LeeDroid 3.0.2 (A2SD) | HTC Desire A8181 | UOT Kitchen Mods

Root method

Maybe a dumb question, but when I rooted my Evo back in April, I can't for the life of me remember what root method I used, thus making it difficult to know how to unroot, I think? I can't reference the files on my pc I used to do it cause that one died. How do I tell what unroot method I need to use? I am rooted running Fresh and am currently s-off.
Thanks!
The rooting only work for 2.2, as no root for 2.3, and unrooting, it works, but you need to be on the 2.15.00.11.19 radio.
Rooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p...driver_install ; Download the hboot drivers needed for rooting. The instructions are also there of how to install them, straight forward.
2. Download unrevoked3 > http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ ; It will show up as reflash_package on your desktop; leave it alone for now
3. On your phone from a home screen: menu > settings > applications > development and make sure usb debugging is checked; needed so that unrevoked can find the phone; never turn this off
4. http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/ ; Download htc sync and install it. After that, uninstall the program from your computer ; you only need the drivers from it.
5. On your phone, connect the to the pc in CHARGE ONLY, do not mount as a disk, ect, has to be charge only
6. On the desktop, run unrevoked [reflash_package], accept the disclaimer, blah blah
7. Just sit your phone down and let it do its thing. It'll take about 5 minutes, and the phone will reboot twice. Once its done, it'll say done. You can open your app drawer and you'll see an app that says superuser, and then you're done.
IF unrevoked tells you 'is your firmware too new?' boot into the bootloader [while turning the phone on, hold vol+down till you see a white screen with androids skateboarding.] Use the volume keys to navigate after the scan completes to clear storage [a factory reset, data will be lost] and then use the power button to select it, then repeat step #6.
To tether, you can flash a custom rom of your choosing after you've browsed, and then use the built in hot spot, or download wireless tether from the market, more later after you root.
Unrooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ; Scroll down to the FAQs, then download the unrevoked s-on zip. This places the security back on your phone, because rooting makes it s-off, and if s-on, quickest way to tell your phone was rooted.
2. Flash that file from recovery, then boot back into the bootloader [vol+down while turning phone on] and verify until its s-on.
3. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip ; rename that file to PC36IMG, place on the root of your sdcard [not in a folder] then flash it in the bootloader. When the scan that normally does nothing, it'll detect that file. Apply the update then reboot. That's a stock 3.70 firmware file, it'll take you back to stock, unrooted, s-on.

What's your bootloader version, because you'll have to use a different RUU file then.
I am currently running Fresh Rom which I believe is based on 3.70, my bootloader says 2.10.0001.

Tried to unroot but nothing happened?

Hey guys so yesterday I tried to unroot by downloading a file from the thread titled "how to unroot without a computer(the guy who posted it said "ill one up you" and posted a link to a file from a ruu which I renamed pc36img and flashed in bootloader). After I tried this I noticed that in the bootloader it said s-on, but when my phone booted up I was still on synergy Rom and I'm pretty sure I still have root privileges. I'm not sure what went wrong but my phone is still rooted and working ok. The reason I wanted to unroot is because my phone is randomly rebooting all the time and its really pissing me off. I still want to unroot but I can't use the computer because my usb port is only charging and not working as a mass storage device anymore.

Which file was yhe pc36img?? It seems like you might have flashed the s-on tool. Unrevoked makes the s-on tool, you flash that before you flash the ruu.
If you still have root then that was probably it.
You might havr to try and find another ruu in pc36img format.
I always ruu through htc sync on the pc, so I dont know where to find them.

I actually found a good cable that is rigid in my usb port and holds a connection with the computer. OH and it wasn't the unrevoked s-on tool... i didn't even use unrevoked
