[Q] New Arc user help! contacts and sms transfer :) - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey! well I have a rooted X10 and a Nexus one and will be getting my Xperia Arc later!
I want to transfer all my locally stored contacts and sms from my nexus one to my new arc, I want to keep both phones as stock as possible, and hoping their are free solutions.
thank you in advance for the help!

Contacts should be pretty simple, make all contacts google contacts, then sync on the old phone, sync on the new phone, and you should have all your contacts.
Or: the arc has options to backup/restore contacts to SD card. Dunno if the nexus one has this option or not, but if it does then that seems like a simple way to do.
For SMSs i've been using MyBackup Pro for ages now, it does contacts, SMSs, bookmarks, calendar and loads more. It costs a few quid, (it's worth it IMO) but there's also a time limited (30 days) free version which is good enough if you only want to transfer over this once.
Alternatively there's loads of free apps out there that do SMS backup/restore (just search the market). Havent used any but this one gets good reviews.

Switching from WinMo to Android (EVO) A few questions

Hello to all, I've had MANY WinMo phones (8125,8525,8925,Fuze,HD, and lastly HD2)
There are a few applications that I feel were awesome to have:
--> PIM (saves all your contacts and appointments)
--> and recently the XDA settings exporter/importer ( It saved all your setting basically)
These applications made it easier to re-set up the phone after you had flashed a new ROM, will these types of apps be available to help cross over from WinMo to Android? Especially when you flash a new ROM on the EVO
Also, do the apps save themselves to the memory card on the phone in-case your needs a hard-reset?

Well, there is an App for that ... (ducks...).. I use MyBackup Pro which does pretty much the same thing as PIM Backup on WinMo. It can backup content (Contacts, SMS etc) in the cloud and applications on the SD Card. It is not a free app, but worth the cost. There are other apps that do the same things - use the market to find them.
Also if you are gmail user, your appointments are managed in google calendar, so you do not need to back them up.
Hope this helps
All your contacts and calendar events are in the cloud. GMail and Google Calendar. You flash a new ROM and then sign-in in the new ROM using you google id, and you will 'magically' get all your contacts and events.
You don't need any apps for that.
yeah, dude. Move all your contacts and calendar entries to Google. If you haven't already, create a Gmail address. I can't tell you the last time I had to sync my phone to my computer using outlook. Everything is on a cloud now, so get a cloud. Flash a ROM, enter your Google Account user/pass, and BAM! Everything is back (save for apps, though depending on the ROM, that will restore, too).
Best part, Google Clouds are free!
i moved all my contacts and calendar events to google on my winmo phone by setting up the google sync through activesync.
here is the web site with the information:
http://www.google.com/sync/windowsmobile.html
Anyone try Sprite Software's Spritemigrate?

what's this 'cloud' business? or is that just another way to say the google network?

Cloud is the term for OTA/virtual storage. All your info is in the cloud, and you can download it to whatever device or PC from there. Saves having to sync to a computer here and a computer there.

sanjsrik - did you try this?
Just got my Evo in the mail today, so will be migrating my WinMo6.5 (HTC TP)...
Also, anybody use the Sprite Andriod Backup utility?
I used to use Sprite utilities back when I had a Moto Q and it did what I needed.
root, and flash cyanogenmod 6 rom. then all your contacts, calander and apps will restore when you sign into google!
*gushes* boy how i love you google. how did i manage all those years with without you on winmo?
ps, check out titanium backup if you do not want to jump to a froyo rom. if you root it can backup practically everything and a ton still even if you do not root. there is a free and paid version. paid version is just faster and one click restores.
pss this shouldnt be in the development section, should be in q&a

[Q] How to backup phone only contacts?

Hi - I have created many phone-only (not gmail) contacts with high res profile photos.
How can i backup these phone only contacts?
I tried mybackup pro but that does every contact, and fails on restore anyway.
I dont want to have to create all of them again when i do full wipes...
Have you tried stock option "export to sd"? I took a backup by using this feature which is native in Desire thanks to either android or Sense, not sure which one is correct though, anyway.. u don't need to use any 3rd party app for this. (i have been using contact pics too, all of them restored after hard reset)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'll give it a go - thanks!

There must be an option to add them to gmail account, I always create GMail/Some other MS Exchange contacts, keeps my life easy.
Well if you want to keep the mentioned hig res contact pics then the solution mentioned above is not very usable, as you will just get your contacts on a list, which the phone can import again.
If you dont need to keep those pics, just make the backup from the contacts app, and import the file to your google account through a browser. Then sync them back to your phone. And just create all future contacts as google contacts.

[Q] How well does Sprite Migrate Work?

Hey guys,
Im a long time WINMO user jumping off the sinking ship to Android. Picked up a HTC Desire the other day, and am just in the process of figuring out the best way to get my personal data from my HD2 to my Desire.
When i say "personal data"... i mainly mean contacts, calendar appointments and tasks. Emails and SMS is not too important.
Ive done a little research and found that there are a few different methods, but the most popular two seem to be either to use Sprite Migrate or Google Sync.
I had read a few posts noting that by using Google Sync, it will compress/re-size any contact pictures i have assigned... and if i wish to have hi-res contact pictures... i will have to re-assign them. I have also read that there is no calendar 'tasks' app built in... so im hoping there are a few available.
So... if you are a user who has successfully (and reasonably easily) transferred from WINMO to Android... i would welcome any advice you have.
Ps: i realise there are a few threads on this topic, but i couldnt find anything on how well Sprite Migrate actually worked (stable backups/restores, contact picture issues, etc).
Thanks for your help guys.

Contacts app for Desire HD

Hi everybody!
I have a little problem with the contacts app.
I arrange the contacts into categories but when open the main page of the contacts I get all of them. Is it possible to choose only one category?
For instance, when Im at work I need my business contacts. When Im abroad my abroad contacts etc..
Is there a contacts app that can do this? Otherwise the stock contacts app is fantastic but this is a really important feature for me.

Moving from HTC Desire to HTC One X

So I have had a HTC Desire for two years, and have just ordered a new HTC One X
How do I easily move all my data over? I'm worried about contacts, photos or videos. What I am worried about is the application data. For example, I have all three stars in every level of angry birds, and don't want to lose that
Try titanium backup and contacts backup
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using XDA
The one has an app.to help you move data from.your old phone via bluetooth I haven't tried it though.

I did, and it doesn't backup app data.
Only thing that I got were contacts, not even my old messages or call logs.
If you want to keep your progress with Angry Birds, I recommend a Titanium backup or so.

I used the built-in app too and with the same result. Contacts only. They weren't brought across cleanly either with a fair few duplicated.
Titanium is about your only reliable option for bringing over your data from the Desire and you need root to use it.
Doesn't Titanium require root?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I am afraid that backing up your angry birds requires root permission (titanium backup)
Photos and videos might be quite abit easier. You could already make a dropbox account and put all files there.
For calls and sms I use Sms backup + which backs up calls and sms to a label in your gmail account. which i find very useful (it can also restore them)
As far as contacts go, i assume they are integrated in your gmail account or exchange server?
If not you can import them to your gmail contacts. I did this when i first got my desire and now i keep all my contacts on there. It is probably the moest useful phone related thing i have ever done.

Suprised by some of the responses. Don't you people have your contacts backed up to your Google account automatically?
Contacts - Google account so no need to do anything.
Photos/videos - Just copy them over via PC
Game data - Titanium backup
PS. I upgraded from a Desire and believe me you will not regret the decision to get a One X. It's hard to believe these two phones are only 2 years apart in terms of release date. The One X design is so sexy in comparison, it's also lighter, slimmer and the screen is unbelievably better.
As has been said
Contacts - Done via Google
Email - Done via Google
Photos/Music - SD Card backups
App Date - Rooting + Titanium
SMS - SMS Backup & Restore
I have just rooted my OneX fairly easily and everything has moved over apart from Temple Run
There is an app in the store which will be able to backup your angry birds saves without root. Just search for angry birds backup in the store
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I tried "Backup Everything" which is pre-installed on the Runnymede Desire ROM. Seemed to work from user customised standard to new ROM fairly well.
Thanks guys. This phone is awesome.
Here's what I did (as per the replies above):
- Contacts via Google
- Email via Goolge
- SMS using SMS Backup and Restore from Google Play
- Angry birds using Angry Birds Backup from Google Play
I didnt want to root my new HTC One X and invalidate the warranty, hence not using Titanium.
I am actually disappointed with Google for not making something that can easily do this. I mean, its just a case of installing the .apk files and then transferring the data.
