[Q] Very low in-call volume - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm having trouble with my HTC Desire : the in-call volume is too low.
When I'm on a street I can barely hear what a person says when I'm talking on my phone.
The problem started when I switched form Android 2.2 (DeFroST) to Android 2.3 (GingerVillain). I waited to see if the problem would be fixed in time (since Cyanogenmod 7 was not final at first) but now the problem still persists.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue ? It would be greatly appreciated
Android version : 2.3.4
Kernel version : 2.6.38.4-defrost-bravo+trip
GINGERVillain 2.4 for HTC Desire
Rooted with Unrevoked3
P.S. The in-call volume is set to max, if anyone asks.

come on guys ... nobody knows how or at least has an idea !?

I have the same problems, but i used Leedroid V2.4 with 2.6.32.36-leedroid-110327 [email protected] #1 kernel.
With original RUU the same problem...
I tried the Insertcoin ROM and other 2.3.3 ROMs, but the in-call volume very poor.
Please help me!

You can start, by looking in the Setting menu, maybe the volume is down.

HI!
I changed from Leedroid 2.5.0 ROM (where in-call volume very poor) to Cyanogenmod 6.1.1 ROM (update-cm-6.1.1-Desire-signed.zip) and after that the in-call volume normal (a little bit noise).
Next step I did an unroot with RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe and the in-call volume goto very poor again!
I think the problem is with the 2.29.405.5 image......

Same issue with InsertCoin CM7.

There were few reports and far between regarding this issue, probably that's why you get no answer. Your in-call volume is as high as it can get ? During a call toggle the volume button on the side of the phone.
Never had such issues but we can try to get to the bottom of this. I hope, for you, that it's not a hardware problem. Also check your phone's loudspeakers for debris.

Hi all
I had same issue on oxygen. Went to talk about it on their irc channel and gout out that it was kernel/rom related issue. The
Kernel maker on that rom had a look and it was related to volume steps that are available. Usually u have 5 for call and 10 for media. If any one can recompile a kernel to add few volume steps and increase gain values than it shall work. That was wat they did in oxygen.
Hope that helps at least a bit.
Sent from my Coin using Desire running XDA app.

any news?
Hi there,
I have the same problem on my Desire running the current LeeDroid. I also tried Cyanogen 7 and Reflex S 2.1.7. All I found on this issue is the "enter Service Menu" tipp, but when tiping *#*#197328640#*#* into the dialer, nothing happens (well, the number vanished).
I then tried Volume+, Volume Booster and several other Market apps, all to no avail. I tried changing the volume with a bluetooth earpiece attached and then switching back, again no luck.
So... is the only solution to wait for a new kernel or has anyone found another way to get the in-call volume back to normal?

Same problem on Google Nexus One
Problem appears to be only on the regular speaker. When I use headphones or the Loudspeaker, the volume level is enough.
I was advised to look for another Kernel. How would I go about doing something like that? (I am somewhat noobie)

I am here again, I tried to follow the suggestion to replace the kernel that I had with the kernel alex v-04.
I can say that the volume of the incoming call is actually increased a bit but now there is a new problem, when I activate the wifi I get an error message and the network does not work, how can I do to fix it? I have to find a new kernel or am I doing something wrong in the procedure? I used "Kernel_Update_Utility09" and I have not encountered any particular problems during the upgrade.
Thank you very much.
update
after installing this kernel I have found 2 other side effects, the first problem is related to the LED charging, when the desire is on the LED no turns green when charging is completed, the second problem is with the flashlight app that no longer works

Hello everyone , after several attempts to search for the cause of the problem I found a ( possible) solution .
I think this solution will solve the problem on a number of phones Desire.
The problem is the "hardware " is not software (in my case ) and the solution is very simple.
it is sufficient to " uncork " the hole of the speaker that is clogged with dirt and sweat of the skin, into the hole that you see in black is a small piece of protective tissue ( such as that used for the protection of speakers your hi -fi) the protective fabric is impregnated with sweat and dirt and create a cap that prevents the sound from leaking out on a regular basis .
To uncork the hole you need to disassemble the desire , remove the speaker and remove this tissue , the hole will remain open and will be more aesthetically ugly , but at least your phone will work on a regular basis ..... I closed the hole with a very fine mesh of steel .
Please do not try to uncork the hole without disassembling the phone because you risk to drill the speaker.
I hope this tip will help someone.
Let me know , bye !

HELP PLEASE! I can't hear caller voice

All of the sudden I can't hear caller voice, but when I put on speaker then everything is ok. I then switch back to regular mode and can't hear. As if I am on mute. Anyone have the same problem? or help me pin the problem. The phone rings fine.
Please help the old guy out geniuses.
Thanks in advance
hi,
i think that your problem is not software but hardware...it happend to me...just the little speaker broked....you have to change that or you can use with bluetooth headset....
Keep in mind that this is my experiene , i don't know if it be the same for you..but i think so
How many speaker are there on the phone? I thought only one right? the music, handfree speaker is fine. If there are more than one speaker, please direct me a site where I can order it. Thanks
For some reason, I think this is more software problem then hardware. The phone is in my case and never drop and taking really good care of it.
Hi!
I have same issues here.
I think there is a rom problem or somenthing like that...
Here I have to reset.. make alot of calls to test .. raise de volume up.. change speaker and works... its really annoying.
BTW.. I was using Cloudy 1.3 and was flawlessly. Changed to Gen.Y D2 R2 , issue is back .. =(
I think it's a software problem.Have you installed any software like codec or some other audio/sound application? If so try to uninstall it and resart your device. If not try a hard reset.

i believe there are 2 speakers in diamond, one is for ringer and speaker phone the other is for calling.
try switching back to Cloudy 1.3 and see if problem still exist?
if there are then your speaker is broken otherwise it's the rom problem.
Guys, just FYI the same issue appears when you install SRS WOW HD sound driver v1.5.1. Version 1.2.1 was working smoothly on diamond, but once i installed this new one, all sounds are mute for some reason and once i uninstalled it again, it was back to normal. Don't know if this will help, anyways with this issue you don't hear anything (ringer, alarm, caller)...
Actually I had the same problem, it was the internal speaker giving problems... u might hve to give it in for repairs if u can....
Hearing aid batterys? lol
I also have this problem... I believe that some of the ROMs that I've installed before set the speaker volume too high which resulted in the speaker blowing. I suggest you either send the phone in for repairs or search for software on XDA which turns the speakerphone on automatically when you make calls, that's how I get around this. You just put it by your ear like normal and you can still hear the phonecall =) Seems like HTC uses really crappy speakers in their phones...

[Q] Gingerbread Transfers Bluetooth To Handset When Text Received.

Sorry if this has already been discussed. I searched for the same issue but didn't come up with anything, and if it has, can somebody post a link to the thread/threads with the same issue?
I'm rooted and installed the stock Gingerbread 2.3.4, build 4.06.605.3, and the first thing I noticed is that when I'm on a call on my Jawbone Icon and I get a text message while on a call, the call gets transfered to the handset. I've tried everything possible with unpairing/pairing/rebooting/settings, but every single time it disconnects the call from the Icon and transfers it to the handset once a text notification comes through.
I found this on the HTC forums about the Dinc2, (community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/f/124/t/12762.aspx), and it appears to me to be a known Gingerbread issue that many other people are having and not just a hardware issue with a certain phone or certain BT earpiece.
Does anybody else know of this, have this same issue, and if there has been a fix or patch for it yet? I'm about ready to go back to a Froyo ROM or try a Gingerbread one where it works if I can find one I like, but for some goofy reason and after all the futzing around I've done with different ROMS, I always seem to go back to the stock one with Sense UI.
Can anybody help me out here? Thanks a ton!!

Hmmmmm... I'm not using the GingerTiny kernel, just the htc 2.6.35.13-g55a06e5 kernel. What could be the difference...
Not sure, im not familiar with bluetooth or if it has anything to do with the kernel.
Interesting, I've heard several others mention this problem recently and another who added the same thing happens when getting a text while having a call on speakerphone. Drumznut, do you have the 2.15.10.07.07 radio? If so, it'd be interesting to see what would happen with the GingerTiny kernel since that combo is working for cmlusco.
@cmlusco, can you replicate it with the call on speakerphone + receiving a text scenario?

Yes I'm on the 2.15.10.07.07 radio. My phone is listed as:
Android Version - 2.3.4
Baseband Version - 2.15.10.07.07
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.13-g55a06e5 [email protected] #1
Build Number - 4.06.605.3 CL140944
Software Number - 4.06.605.3
Browser Version - WebKit/533.1
PRI Version - 1.28_002
PRL Version - 52011
ERI Version - 5
I'd give it a try if I knew where to get the GingerTiny Kernel. Anybody have a link to it or have any idea what else to try?

Interested to see how it goes.
Don't mean to be a pain but any new info on this? Quite a few people experiencing this it seems.
hi, i am not having this issue, but i also am using a different BT. I am using nills business sense3.0 v2.3 and kernel gingertiny 2.6.35.10 with the 7.07 radio. the bt phones are altec lansing backbeat 903 BT headset.
i had an idea, it may have something to do with the way the headset handles audio, as a test try setting your text ringtone to silent, and turn off the vibrate too just in case, now try replicating the problem and see if it still switches your audio to the handset. If this fixes the problem then it has got to do with the way your headset deals with notifications as a posed to regular audio. unfortunately i have no idea how to fix this problem other than not setting the notification, and i am sure that is not an acceptable solution, on the other hand you may only have to change a setting in your headset.
well anyway that just popped into my head when i was reading your post, i may be way off base but i figure it worth a try, and hopefully it may be helpful.

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry I didn't get to the testing sooner...
Here's what I've found:
I performed all the same tests with the stock htc kernel and with the Gingertiny kernel and had the exact same results.
I use the apps SMS Popup and Missed Reminders, so the first thing I did was uninstall both those apps and run some tests.
Receiving a text message while on my bluetooth still transferred my call to the handset.
Setting the text vibration to off but leaving on sound notification still transferred my bluetooth call to the handset.
Setting the text notification sound off but leaving the vibrate on still didn't matter and it still did the same thing.
Setting the text sound off and the vibrate off too did the trick and there was no transferring of the bluetooth call to the handset when I received a text message.
I then reinstalled SMS Popup, left the text sound and vibrate off and had no problem.
I then installed NotifyMyWay to see if that app's vibrate notification would work and not transfer the bluetooth call to the handset and it worked fine with "no" call transferred to the handset when I received a text message.
So yeah, it's something with how the Sense UI and the handset are interpreting the notification of the incoming text message while on a bluetooth call. I can live without a text sound notification and will have to live with turning the sound notification on and off if and when I have to but I would like to see a patch out to correct this issue. Will that happen?? Good question.
Let me know if anybody has any suggestions or other tests to try. Thanks!!
I am glad i was able to help .

[Q] No sound during a phone call

I'm having an issue with my Xperia Play. During a phone call, I usually don't get sound unless I switch to speaker mode or I plug in earphones.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it only works after I switch back and forth the speakermode.
I wonder if it's a hardware or software issue. Anyone could help ?
edit: I think I had this issue after rooting and unlocking the bootloader but I can't be sure because I didn't spend a lot of time with the phone locked down.
edit2: I rooted by flashing Bin4ry's package. I read a bit about that and it seems it can have a negative effect on the baseband version not being the right one for my 2.3.3 firmware ?
Here are my version numbers:
Build: 4.0.A.2.368
Kernel: Doomlord #3
Baseband: 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-20302204-36
Bumping just in case. Someoe knowledgeable could see it.
I upgraded with flashtool to 2.3.4 and the issue is still there.
No sound during a phone call
Hello I have this issue too, I hope someone will recognize my post
While I dial a phone and press call (then earphone turns on) I hear a GSM signal sound (same as if you hear your phone signal in a PC speakers) instead of voice.
In service menu if I press Earphone test i hear this high frequency sounds too.
I HAVE already REPLACED BOTH CABLES WHICH CONNECT EARPHONE AND MOTHERBOARD (1.flex and 2. the one with front camera and earphone included).
So cable replacement DID NOT SOLVE it.
I thought it is SW stuff, but I FLASHED .62 ROM but it is STILL SAME.
New .80 BASEBAND DIDN'T HELPED to me.
Last time my GSM signal was crashing sometimes, If I tried to connect manually it told me that my sim card is not allowed to connect to my operator... something like that
my phone R800i and I don't remember when it started, I think in the morning after party last month
Any ideas what to do guyz? :crying: :crying:
Really want to solve this :cyclops:

Probably if you return to the Stock Version. Also make you have not by accidentally damaged the earpiece with water, even if you were sweating from you ear or something because it might not always be the cables that are wrong but some other HW problem.

Hello, I wrote it all in a previous post, my earpiece is new and .62 is stock ROM, In my opinion there is some HW problem in gsm signal modulation. I was in a smartphone-repair shop and they told me it will cost too much. I think this is the weakest point of XPLAY, because my friend has XPLAY too and while he dial a number and start calling, phone screen turns black and no hardware keys can wake up the screen..
Then I discovered only power button works here after checking ''Power button ends call'' in Accessibility settings. But it is still annoying.
But my problem is not solved, I have to phone with headphones connected or with rear speakers as audio output :/

[Q] Help Please! Microphone Dead/Very Quiet..?

Right, here’s the situation, I replaced the screen on my HTC Desire HD a few days ago and literally the first boot since there was a Wifi notification of a ROM update also, so I did it... (Orange UK Software number 3.13.61.5) anyway, since replacing the screen / updating the ROM, the Microphone has gone ridiculously quiet when making or receiving a phone call and if I open the Voice recorder, I can barely hear my recorded voice back, and the only way people can hear me when I call them is if they put it on loudspeaker and still put the phone to their ear...
Ok so initially I thought that this might be a hardware issue as I have been in the phone, however, given the fact that I can hear some playback via voice recorder, this means that the Microphone is working..?
So after a bit more investigation, I found that if I remove the bottom panel that covers the SD Card and Sim Card slots, then Voice recorder works perfectly (but my signal drops off completely so I can't test a phone call... *Are the 2 little gold contacts to do with the antenna?*) So I have come to the conclusion that it must be software? As obviously when these 2 little gold contacts make connection with the phone again, ye it enables me to make a phone call, but wrecks the microphone...
On a side note, I have checked the little Microphone hole on that bottom panel and shoved a pin through it and it’s as clean as a whistle so it can't be a blockage of any sort...
So something is happening when the bottom panel is on the phone, those 2 gold contacts tell the phone to do something? Provide an antenna for it but in doing so almost muting the microphone at the same time..?
Any ideas on how I can fix this or where shall I start? Could this still be a hardware issue? Shall I strip the phone down again and pay special attention to a specific part? :S
Please Help!?
Thanks in advance!
Adam.
which rom are you using? if that's a stock rom, it is highly recommended that you try one of the custom ones from development section (sense 3.5 roms)
Yes, its a stock ROM that was pushed OTA... It's a friends phone, I have a HD2 so I'm very familiar with flashing roms etc... but I'm going through the custom roms section and I can't seem to be able to find a good guide as a starting point..? I see a lot about Downgrading? and S-Off..? (Does that mean Signature Off?)
Thanks very much for the reply though!
Ok... I've flashed a custom ROM now, and a different radio '[ROM] Android Revolution HD 7.0.3 | High Quality & Performance | O/C | Legendary' is the rom I used...
Exactly the same... It's as if the microphone level is right down when the phone has signal/network as if I shout the voice recorder picks stuff up then...
Is there an App I can use to tweak the gain or something on the Mic levels?
I've had the phone in bits again and cleaned out everywhere, theres no dust build up or anything of the sort so I'm sure its not hardware related... but then if the ROM is completely different then it can't be software either can it..? :S
Cheers, Adam.

I'm no expert on electricity and all that but can it be possible that the power input onto the mic is being too low so that it is not functioning properly due to a newer screen sucking up a higher power? but then you mentioned that by removing those plates, it works fine...
I couldn't come across a fix as it seems that not many people had this problem so it seems that it is more of a hardware problem but i'll post asap i find something
EDIT: maybe this
Thanks for the reply! I can't understand what it could be... I have figured out though that if I hold the phone horizontally in front of my mouth and talk then it works... so I'm completely stumped as to what it could be...
Is there no way I can edit some sensitivity figure somewhere? :S

No mic issue continued

Thanks for the reply! I can't understand what it could be... I have figured out though that if I hold the phone horizontally in front of my mouth and talk then it works... so I'm completely stumped as to what it could be...
Is there no way I can edit some sensitivity figure somewhere? :S

Hi All
I have had the same issue with no mic imput when calling someone on a HTC Desire 500 phone.
My problem started when I paired a plantronics bluetooth hands free device to my phone and started to use it.
While using the PK100 device all was perfect and no issues, but when I turned off the hands free device I now have the same issue no one can her me through the phone mic, no sound at all. I believe this issue is both software and hardware the software needs to switch the hardware (mic) on and off
It is as if the mic has been switched off by the (PK100) bluetooth hands free but the software on the phone is not re-enabling the phone mic so now I am in a situation where i can only use my phone via a diferent mic headphones or PK100 hands free.
I can also add that while in a call I have the option to switch from the hands free on the phone, or to use the phone or to use the PK100 from an in call option all works ok but the mic on the phone will not reactivate. this seems to be an issue with the software not activating the mic.
If anyone has any idea I would like to here...
