1.84.666.2 Root Issues? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been following the downgrade guide posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
as well as the goldcard link posted within that thread. I have my goldcard working, and I have been able to gain temp root access. When I reboot and try to load the rom, it checks the rom zip file then brings me back to the white screen.
Is there anything I'm doing/not doing that could be affecting this? will provide as much information as I possibly can.
Running on the Bell network, updated to 1.84 before even considering rooting my phone and modding it in general. Really regretting it now :\

Did anyone have found a working way to downgrade from bell mobility 1.84 to 1.72 ou better 1.34..
i have 4 desire z 3 of them were on 1.72 and i had no problem to downgrade them to 1.34 and root phones,, but the fourth handset was upgrade to 1.84 and i can't find a way to downgrade it.
so if someone has done it succesfully(please don't answer me ''read this faq and read that faq, read the wiki'' i read all of them and still no succes) i looking for a working solution base on personnel expérience witch résult in succesfull method..
thanks

Stuck with the India Airtel ROM

Hi All,
I am new to rooting / flashing ROMs.
I bought a HTC Hero from India. Following are the details of my firmware / software
Firmware Version: 1.5
Baseband: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
Kernal: 2.6.27.8dd6deee
Build: 2.73.720.5
Software version: 1.0.0.A6288
I would like to try the Android 2.1 ROM on my HTC Hero.
I have been following a procedure which requires a RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.XXX.XX_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver ROM file which will downgrade the HTC Hero for flashing.
I have tried all possible RUU files and the procedure fails with a 131 error, Which probably means that I am using a wrong RUU file.
Can someone please help me locate the right RUU file for downgrading.
OR
Alternately suggest another procedure to flash the 2.1 ROM.
Thanks in advance.

Use the Gold Card method and downgrade, then you can do whatever you want.
follow stickies mate, anything suggested here may be lesser to what has already been suggested. if you get to know something interesting over and above the stickies then let others know about that..cheers
2.73.710.61
Hey all,
I'm stuck on 2.73.710.61. I'm in Oz and have had plenty of experience with WINMOB and my G1. Orignally downgraded my G1 using the gold card method.
My gold card for Hero was created successfully and gets to bootloader than fails the downgrade.
I have not seen any mentions of the 2.73.710.61 firmware or the firmware stated by the original poster...
Are we missing anything or does the gold card have to be kingston??? From memory my G1 goldcard was a kingston...
Also the phone is not locked to any carrier, it is straight out of the box with the genuine HTC only firmware...
Please no flamming with use search idiot because there is no direct link or search for the firmware i am mentiong.
TIA
and
Respect...
I'm new to the modded android ROM scene, but do have a technical background and have had experience in modding PSPs.
I am having great difficulty downgrading my HTC Hero from 2.73.710.61
I am from OZ like the previous poster, have an unlocked genuine Hero bought from Harvey Norman.
I have tried many methods without luck, hitting the worst case scenario for each 'How To' guide, which in turn pointed me to the next guide. Which failed...
If anyone could please give me some help it would be greatly appreciated. My initial problem was that I could not find the 'RUU_Hero_HTC..' ROM to downgrade with, all versions i tried came up with the 'Wrong Client' error.
Thanks in advance!
.....so six hours later and I have made much progress.. HOORAY! I can confirm the Goldcard method DOES work for the HTC Hero 2.73.710.61 and I believe this is the ONLY method that will enable you to proceed with UN-ROOTING, ROOTING, DOWNGRADING etc...
Steps to create the Goldcard that didnt work, eventually ended up working, after much troubleshooting.. long story. Now im on my way to installing EzHero V5.0.1 custom ROM
for all those having problems with flashing, downgrading, gold card...etc...
please , there is Btdag's thread, read it and read again, follow every single step stated in the guide. if you get stuck, start all over again.
Btdag made it so detailed even you have never seen a computer before, i'm sure you can do it. goodluck.

Just use flashrec to save your recovery and then flash Amon-Ra recovery. I had the same phone and flashrec worked straight away.
I have also flashed the India OTA for 2.1 and got back a custom recovery through flashing the 2.73.420.5 ROM using a goldcard - just search and you'll find the threads.
Cheers

[Q] Root, S-OFF, SuperCID after OTA Desire Z

Hi,
i'm newbie but first of course I read wiki, guides and others about rooting etc.
I've already applied OTA update on my Desire Z. My question is: am I able to root my device and get new non original ROM's and S-OFF? I can't find a straight answer here about it.
second answer is that i run bootloader on my device and choose "simlock" and push power button and somthing was done, then it prompt for restart which i made. What did I do?
Thanks,
Mat
I assume that 'simlock' option would re-do the network lock if you had used a code to unlock,.... I ASSUME.
Use that wiki you have already gone through to find out how to root etc with gfree. It's all in there. Looks pretty straight forward,.... not that I have had time to do it myself just yet.
As far as I know, it's currently impossible to root the new OTA. You'll have to downgrade to the pre-OTA to get root and you can find the guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Of course, my info might be outdated as I'm a G2 owner and not a DZ owner
EDIT: IT IS POSSIBLE!!!! Just ran across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886023

Appologies, as Omar said, Wiki is not up to date. Sorry for leading you up a blind ally. I might have a go at updating the wiki later if someone doesn't beat me to it, and if I can grow bigger balls.... don't want to be shouted at if I do something wrong!!
There's a guide on how to get temp root on 1.72 on the dev forum. You can turn that into perm root using the same commands as with the perm root part of rage.

[Q] Downgrade from 1.84.666.2

I stupidly updated my Bell Desire Z to 1.84.666.2 the other day. Looking for a way to downgrade to a version that can be rooted.
Found this thread, but it's for a previous update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Love this phone but I really want to dump Bell's extra software and Sense.
Please, any helpful input is appreciated!
How far through that guide did you get, what error message? I did 1.84 -> 1.34 to get S-OFF & root.
Following the tutorial got me temp root access but was unable to boot the firmware. I suppose I need to make a goldcard but that tutorial has a few broken links. Anyone want to give me a resource that explains what is going on in that tutorial a little more deeply? I remember reading in a previous forum that 1.8 update could be rolled back.
I'm on a Bell DZ too...

You will need a goldcard if you don't already have SuperCID via gfree, and you can't find an earlier ROM/RUU that matches your CID.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I'm getting stuck at step 11. I get to the white bootloader screen and without doing anything the phone does and SD check, looks for PC10DIAG.zip, etc, then finds PC10IMG.zip and checks it. Then I get bumped out to the bootloader list of FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIMLOCK and IMAGE CRC.
It's unclear what to do from there. The tutorial says I'll get a prompt to update and restart, but I don't.
Also, the tutorial says I'll need a goldcard (which I created) but no where in the tutorial does it say what to do with it...
I got a goldcard using Gold Card Tool. Just do a google search of "easy goldcard".
I've managed to iron out that issue. I had made a mistake when making the goldcard.
Problem now is that when I get to step 11 the phone says "Model ID incorrect!" then "Update Fail!".
Any ideas?
Where are you getting your PC10IMG from?
From the guide I linked earlier. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
I downloaded the full RUU and renamed the extracted rom.zip.
I had goldcard issues (broken links) so I got the rom that matched my current region. I then did the temp root, modded the version info and let the phone try the update. Once I got it all sorted it worked as is said in the guide. I don't know if the goldcard tool worked or not, I think not as I wanted to change the Asian phone to WWE but had to go down to Asian 1.34 then go S-OFF and then go WWE. Maybe an extra step but it worked.
How do I find a rom that matches my current region?
The desire z was purchased from Bell Mobility in Canada and is now being used on Rogers.
This thread may be of help to you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029821
Thanks for that link! I basically did as the guy said and used the link to the 1.34.666.1 rom you linked in that thread. Only difference was I uploaded it to the SD and the issued the command adb reboot bootloader. This time no errors and the update worked!
So now I guess I just go ahead with a normal root of a 1.34.666.1 DZ?
Weird thing is the guy in that other thread said he got S-Off from doing this update... On my phone it's still S-On.
All you have done is put a rom on the phone that allows S-OFF, I can't see anyway you could get it in a stock rom?!

You should now be able to follow this guide to get S-OFF (as above, I don't see how flashing a stock ROM would do this automatically): http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
So after downgrading I had S-ON. But I just finished the rest of the rooting process in the guide I linked in my original post and got root!
What a process. That must have taken 12 hours or more. I should really post a new guide with more complete info.
Thanks for the help guys!
Now that I have root and S-Off downgrading from 1.84.666.2 to 1.34.666.1 using the processes DVDWSN did. Now I thought I could go back to 1.84.666.2 using OTA like I upgraded the first time. But when I try to do OTA, I get the message I do not have any new version. What gives?
If you are trying to downgrade do not touch OTA updates lol. Anyways, what you want to do is temp root your phone so you can 'spoof' the radio version the an old one thereby allowing you to flash a radio that can be manipulated. If you aren't sure what to do then try following this guide.

yes.. probs rooting.

Hey all, new here to posting although use this site alot for the quick fix answers ive had in the past.
How ever decided i would try rooting my desire z as i was looking for that extra control over everything and to loose some of that bloatware just like many of you.
Only thing im having trouble with is actually getting a successful root, im not one to just ask without looking of course but in actual fact ive been at this since 11ish this morning (8hours ago) with no luck. Ive tried about 5 different methods (from xda users such as 'Aegishua' and 'gtrab' guides to a random google searchs also) to no luck at all. Had quite a fair few errors pop up during the process of trying but so far my DZ is still intact and working fine but with S-ON still.
Im not here to ask for someone to explain a fool proof way to root my phone i was just hoping that someone may b able to point me in the right direction of a guide that should hopefully bring some success.
I have an unbranded Desire Z running 2.2.1 (originally 2.2) on Vodafone UK. i could list software details but im hoping someone could either tell me i can't root it since the new security update in 2.2.1 or could pass on a link to a guide that may work for me.
Sorry to sound long winded but its been a day full of "wtf's" amungst other phrases so im just a little lost and confused
Thanks in advance
Matt
if you have adb working and are comfortable with it, use the wiki method..
do you know what firmware version you are? if you are 1.72 or above, you need to downgrade to 1.34 before you will be able to root successfully.
Check in dev section, there is something bout debranding and rooting for DZ and shows what newly one has issue, also you could try the xda wiki methond gfreev.05

Before trying to root you need to follow the step above. This is mainly the mistake people make when they try to root the Desire Z if your a new comer, this is words from the wise. Lol
Your firmware is probably 1.85 or something higher than 1.72 by the looks of things which just means you need to downgrade. But the complicated part is actually getting the downgrade to recognize your vodafone branded Desire Z's unique CID. That's where a goldcard comes in handy because it bypasses the CID check.
Anyways, all you need to do is make a goldcard to downgrade. If you get any errors then post the exact errors word for word if possible.

[Q] Really need help rooting.

I have read multiple guides around the internet about rooting my HTC Desire Z. Hutchinson 3UK network. I am unsure on what method to use, how to downgrade etc.
I do not want to run a risk of rooting my phone as I bought it outright for £300. I also want to know if I can unroot and perm-root.
The reason I want to root is to overclock it, is it possile to use 2.2 firmware on a root?
Could you please post or link a guide that will provide all of the information I need and that is fairly simple to understand as I am new to the whole Android/rooting business.
Many thanks.
My Android version is 2.2.1 and am hoping to use this version as I love sense but only want a root on this to overclock.
My baseband version is 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Build number and software number is 1.72.405.2
With a 1.72 ROM you will need to downgrade before you can Root.
The instructions in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Introduction) include links to the downgrade instructions.
The recommended root method uses GFREE which will SIM-Unlock the phone while you are rooting.
Yes you can unroot, the instructions for that are in the Wiki as well.
You can absolutely use a 2.2 ROM while rooted, if you are only looking to overclock you can just install an overclock friendly kernel after you are rooted, though you may want to look at a custom ROM because you will have to wipe when you downgrade from 1.72.
Good luck!
Ok, is unrooting a simple process because I am covered on warranty and do not to want to simply lose it, I need a backup. My phone is already unlocked so that is fine there.
How long does the rooting take? Because it all looks very confusing entering the code etc, am I likely to mess anything up which results in a brick?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
The process of rooting via wiki method took me about 15 minutes, but the setup of adb and installing drivers will add additional time if you are unfamiliar with it. Usually if you enter in a wrong character in adb, the command won't go through (incorrect paths, etc), but just be careful and you will be fine. Read each step carefully.
Unrooting was a little difficult for me (I did this first to send my first G2 in for warranty) as that was my first experience tying my phone to the pc, but it is very simple and straightforward with the instructions.
Yeah i did rooting with the wiki but sometimes you'll get confused on how to do it. If u dont understand ask here or search the internet. Always happy to help ^_^!
Downgrading
It says check your INFOCID. How do I perform this check?
Sorry for not knowing anything..
the link I am asking about is provided by the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
