Odin and downloading mode - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I edited my post in the odin thread in dev because I felt like I was hijacking...
So odin see's my phone when the phone is on (yellow com port) . Even during boot up. But it doesn't see it in download mode. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers more than 5 times. I also just went out and bought a new data cable (NOT made my samsung)... Again, odin see's my phone while it's booting, and while it's on normal, but it just doesn't see it when in downloading mode.
Anyone have any tips? Is it possible to do this without being in downloading mode? I've tried every one of the "trouble shooting" tips for odin not seeing the device. Tried all of the usb ports, tried doing it without the battery, it's plugged into a usb port that is directly connected to the mobo.
I'm doing all of this on an older win xp comp. I had to use the win xp machine to root the phone, and it worked fine.
Even with Heimdall I get "failed to detect compatible device"

Have you tried it with the battery out and connected to computer to go into download mode?

Sorry, I know there's a bit to read in the OP. Just wanted to get all of the info I could in there... But yes, I tried that. Several times actually :-/

I guess I should have interpretted that from "tried all the troubleshooting tips"
Reading through the OP (again...really) sounds like there is something wrong with your download mode. How about using the Samsung EB13 tool thingy and let it OTA? It is supposed to be more hardy than Odin.

No I haven't tried that. I didn't even know there was a tool. I just came from the heroc to the epic yesterday
What is this tool thingy you speak of ?
[edit] im running syndicate and would like to get back to square one.

Here is the link for the updater tool. I think it gets you to EB13 wiping your phone:
http://db.tt/LttNmT9
The other option is to flash the ReRFS EC05 ROM and stock recovery in Development. Here:

This is an Odin like interface that needs the computer and also asks for download mode but it detects the phone in most cases when Odin can't. Give it a try and if it still can't find your phone download mode is broken. Then go to plan B.

Downloading now! Will post the results. Thanks again for the hospitality.
[edit] That program didn't work either. It just stays at the "plug into computer" step
Gonna try plan B now

Q) Bricked epic flashing modem from froyo. Stuck at Param.lfs

Can someone please help? I bricked my phone trying too flash the modem and I keep trying too recover using Odin. I put the tar file in the pda part and the pit file in the pit section. I got both these files from the how to recover brick thread. But when I click start, it gets stuck on the param.lfs part. And the words PARAM go into the white box above the progess bar. Can someone please help? Im scared its bricked for good.
EDIT: I was able too get passed param.lfs but it keeps freezing in different spots, it never completly finishes. Odin is soo unreliable :/ At one point it got too 50% but my phones screen turned pink and it froze. Is there any other program I can use? Or a more stable/reliable version of odin? I have version 1.0 and i've tried 1.3 and no luck too

I had a similar problem awhile ago with a 2.1 flash. It worked out fine. As long as you can get into download mode you should be ok. You don't have a brick.
Just follow the instructions on the flashing back to stock link that is in whodamans post.
I used the .pit in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032 with the DI18 update in this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138
I did have an issue once where I fixed it by just using the DI18 update and not the pit file(it seemed to find the pit in the update i guess...anyone feel free to correct me on this if i'm worng)
If that doesn't work
3a: Reboot your PC and pull the battery on your phone
3b: Wait for PC to reboot
3c: Open Odin
4c: Put batter back in phone, boot to download mode
5c: Once in download mode connect via USB to the PC

I've yet to see a truly bricked Epic. People that use that word should take that as a sign that they shouldn't be flashing.
I had the exact same problem with Odin freezing at "param.lfs". First of all, Odin is hit and miss. A lot depends on the USB cable as well. I ended up having success with Odin once I switched back to the original cable that came with the phone. Also try different USB ports on your PC. Some people have reported problems when using front panel ports. Try ones in the back that are directly on the mobo.

good point about the cable, although most of the time I see recommendations against using the stock one for anything but charging.
I use a BB cable that seems to be thicker than the stock epic one and haven't had any issues.

unplug the phone, pull the battery, restart the computer, walk away for 5 minutes and take a breather, then come back and try it again. As the above poster said, Odin can be screwy and it can take multiple times to go through sometimes.
Make sure to use a better usb cable if you have it available, or borrow one from a friend.
also, make sure to restart Odin in between attempts

And I also came in to say this, almost. I don't have too much Epic experience, but yes, people always say ZOMG ITS BRICKED and what they MEAN is it isn't behaving how they expected after a flash and it may require a reflash/recovery. If something is bricked, it is a useless mass of plastic and metal that might have some value sold on Ebay as parts.
...though I'm not discouraging people flashing. Just wish people would stop using 'bricked' as a catch phrase, and instead just tell the story and ask for help.
Sasha if you cant use Odin to restore it, then it's bricked. My advice? Take it back to Sprint and get a new one.

What should I say too the sprint employees? I thought bricking the phone ruins the warranty. Also I am able too get too stock recovery and download mode, but odin doesnt flash any rom fully, it always stops. I tried too just flash pit and that worked. Is there any other program you can use or can you flash the tar from the stock recovery which I can get too?

Is there anything at all i can do? please help
Try and odin back to stock. If you click on the link in my signature I've made a video showing you how to use odin.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yup, try to ODIN back to stock.
Also you may want to try re-downloading the once click root, just to be safe. Run it again and make sure you have an EXT4 compatible kernel/ROM on your sd card before hand. You'll have to flash that once you boot into CWM.
i can get into download mode, but i havent flashed a rom yet. all i did was try to root my phone with one click root. should i still try odin
yes, ODIN back to stock and try again. One click root 3.0.0.6 is only if you want to convert to EXT4. If this is the case, you have to flash a compatible kernel and rom.
If you do NOT want to convert, then use the one click root 2.X.X.X. You will not have flash anything else and you will be rooted.
Or if you want to make things even easier, check out the development section and ODIN the stock plus rom. It's pre-rooted, RFS or EXT4, and has additional tweaks to make life good.

possibly a bad flash. Did it fail or pass?
If it failed, try a different USB cable and/or a different USB port. If you are using a desktop computer, make sure you are using USB ports on the back of the tower, instead of front USB ports.
ODIN is a bit wonky at times. If it fails, try, try, try again.
What version of Odin are you using? I still use the old 1.6. The newer versions seem more picky.
after messing around with odin for a good hour and a half qbkings method seemed to work. the newer version of odin blue screened my phone every time. omg im ridiculously thankful for this forum right now. Go to Qbking77 thread on radios for Sprint Gnex its has images for stock and leaked radios, also has full you tube video on properly flashing them through fastboot.

[Q] Bricked, computer won't recognize phone in Download mode, won't boot, no recovery

Hello all,
I have flashed ROMs via recovery and Odin plenty of times. I would say I generally know what I am doing and I flash ROMs on the regular. This is my second Samsung device and have been rooting/flashing for almost two years, so not a noob.
I was stuck in a bootloop on my Note and it wouldn't even let me boot into recovery, so I decided to Odin and back to stock and try again... I got the one-click, phone recognized, yellow COM box popped up, hit start, walked away for 10-15 minutes. Come back and there has barely been any progress at all... I could barely see the green progress bar. I figured something is wrong because I've done this before and it only takes a minute at most. What I did next is what I think messed me up...I pulled my phone and closed the Odin dialogue box and tried to redo it. Problem is, nothing I could do would get me the Yellow COM box. The phone goes into download mode but Odin doesn't seem to want to recognize it. I've tried EVERYTHING. When I boot the phone normally, I get the Samsung error screen saying there was an issue with a firmware upgrade and I should try Kies. I download Kies and attempt to upgrade firmware that way, but I get to the last step where it says "Upgrade Firmware" or something like that on the button but the button remains greyed out and I can't click it... I have tried everything. I downloaded the toolkit and installed drivers but each time I do that, the driver install freezes my PC at the end of the install. Same thing happens if I try to get the drivers from the Samsung site directly, the computer freezes. I have rebooted a million times and tried every USB port there is. I have had the computer try to "set up" the deivce while it's in download mode a few times but usually hangs at the end (probably bc drivers not properly installing). Once or twice it setup fine, but still Odin won't recognize. I think the driver thing is moot because it was recognizing the device before this mess just fine and it recognizes and accesses my wife's S2 just fine.
I am at my wit's end. Did I destroy my phone???? Is there nothing I can do to salvage it?
I just aged about five years in the last 2 hours. Please someone help!!!
Longshot, but try installing the toolkit on a different system and try again. I've had drivers from different systems mixed up and it worked fine when installed on a fresh system. Probably not your problem, but worth a try before trying to warranty your phone. Good Luck.
Also try a different usb cable.

I'll try a different system but I'm not holding out hope.
Will warranty work if in Odin mode the phone says that I have a custom ROM and custom recovery installed???
Am I out of luck here? I always thought that if it boots up, it's not completely bricked. Shouldn't a PC see it if I get the drivers installed???
If no computer sees it and the Download/Odin screen shows Root and custom ROM/Recovery so no warranty replacement, what are my options?

You say it finds your wife's phone just fine and she has the same model? Have you tried installing the drivers manually through the driver update in device manager?
As to other options, if you're paying for the additional insurance Sprint offers, and are willing to pay the $200 deductable (as opposed to the $500 replacement cost) you could always turn it on and drop it in a bucket of water. They won't be able to pull root/rom info from the unit at that point. Otherwise I think it's a matter of luck as to what kind of techs work in the store you go to. I've heard stories about those who were sticklers and those who didn't care (the latter tend to those who root their own phones). All you can do is ask, hypothetically of course.
Wish I could be more help. Good luck.
Please help!!! Does anyone have any other advice?

They won't be able to pull root/rom info from the unit at that point. Otherwise I think it's a matter of luck as to what kind of techs work in the store you go to. I've heard stories about those who were sticklers and those who didn't care (the latter tend to those who root their own phones). All you can do is ask, hypothetically of course.
Wish I could be more help. Good luck.

Appreciate your help. Wife's phone is a different model, but also Samsung.
I do not have the Sprint insurance unfortunately. I will probably try to go through the Samsung warranty, but not holding my breath....

If you can get the drivers to extract (I know it crashes when you try to install) you could still try the manual update method for your phone's drivers. (can't count how many times I've had to do that for peripherals and my win7 laptop that isn't certified for win7)
Did you try completely uninstalling the drivers before you tried to reinstall them?

If you dont have anything special on your internal sd card I would use the wipe all as the no data restore didnt work for me some reason. also download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155 as it will hook you up with the right drivers.

Thanks but this is exactly what I tried first and continue to try... The problem is I unplugged the phone while the one-click was doing its thing because it wasn't progressing. The phone still goes into to Download mode but the one-click no longer 'sees' the phone when I plug it in, so I can't try again...

You said the computer doesnt recognize it right? If it did I would recommend flashing a custom recovery then going from there.

If I get my computer to somehow recognize the device via the drivers, I should not use the odin one-click to just go back to stock? How do I install a custom recovery if I can't boot into Android?

I would download the tool kit and reinstall the drivers from their. I had the exact same problem months ago. took hours of trying to flash different stuff to get it to work. make sure that you try to unplug then replug in the cord and I think you must use a cord that is made for your phone. Mine wont work unless I use the one supplied with it which is weird but I read somewhere that the prongs are longer or something.open the oneclick oden then plug the phone in and let it sit for a min or 2

I'm going to try tonight on a different computer.
So you think I should do the following:
1. install drivers
2. open odin one-click
3. put phone in download mode
4. plug phone in
5. even though yellow COM thing should pop up right away let it sit for a while
6. flash one-click back to stock
I'll give it a shot after work.

I have actually had this happen before. I couldnt get anything to work even the one click. So what I did was use the toolkit to flash a custom recovery with the stock kernel. Then when it rebooted I held the volume up home, and power buttons. Go into recovery and nandriod back to my previous rom and it worked. But my pc did recognize my device.

I didn't know you could flash a recovery to the phone without booting to Android. The toolkit says boot to android as pre-req for installing recovery. If I could get to recovery I could fix this. I'll give it all a shot again tonight.
