I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to increase the wifi reception? I've been flashing between roms and it seems that the sense roms tend to get better wifi reception than the aosp roms. My issue is that I'm not a big fan of sense and really would rather be on a gingerbread aosp rom, but on the several I've tried the wifi reception is crap in comparison to the sense roms. I've tried different kernels and didn't really see any notable improvement there either.
So what I'm really looking for is if there are any software tweaks that will help with this.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

There is no way to increase the signal strength on the phone. The only way to increase reception is to get a more powerful router, or move the current router you have to a higher location.
Then why the difference in reception from one rom to another? Its the same hardware the same router and the same distance from the router to the phone but very noticable difference in reception. One sense rom clocked over a full meg better than another (roughly 2Mbps vs. 1Mbps, crap connection I know) from the same spot that an aosp rom wouldn't even connect at all.
Based on my flashing and testing I respectfully, though completely, disagree.
My problem is that I'm not a dev and don't know where to start to research this within the software. I've seen dev's mention adjusting the wifi scan in roms posted in the dev thread, so it seems that some adjustments can be made.
Again, if anyone has any insight regarding this it would be appreciated.

Sense doesn't give true wifi signal
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Speedtest does, and it looks like he tested his speeds
face the router and begin walking in that direction.

Maybe this is all in my head so I need a confirmation. Do Sense ROMs have better signal strength/data speeds? It doesn't make sense to me but I just seem to have much better reception and speeds when using a Sense based ROM, including EVO framework ones as opposed to CM and Ruby. Is there ay reason for this or am I just imagining it?
I've often wondered the same thing.
I think, however, that actual reception is tied to the PRL, the radio, the PRI, and some more uber-technical stuff - in other words, things well under the hood that aren't impacted/changed when a ROM is flashed.
That said, I suspect ROMs play differently with those things depending on how they are built, hence what appears (or may actually be) better signal.
It all comes down to the RIL and radio. A rom won't mess with those. They should be identical. Check the signal dBm's to compare roms.

I figured it would be a radio thing but it always seemed it was changing from ROM to ROM. That being said, I switched from a Sense ROM to an AOSP one and the signal has not changed at all so thanks guys for answering the question. I knew it had to be in my head hehe

One thing you DO have control over is the firmware of the radio. There are currently 3 versions of radio firmware that you can flash. This has nothing to do with the ROM. Different people have different results in terms of link stability and speed depending on them. Look for the Radio thread to find the downloads and information.
I've actually had this issue on the EVO and can confirm after testing that the signal strength is less with an AOSP ROM (every one I've tried actually). Drives me crazy because I really want to use one.

How exactly did you test this? There are many variables that could influence signal.
I have TERRIBLE Wifi signal strength on any AOSP ROMs (yes, I tested and radios, etc. are up to date). Anyone have this same issue and have a fix?? Sense ROMs are fine for me. I really want to use a few of these, but can't get over the terrible Wifi service.

I've been saying this for ages, hands down the aosp wifi sig can't compare to a sense rom. I believe the devs all know this and been aware. Question is, how come no one has done anything about it :-/. One of the main reasons I'm back to sense.

Definitely not having on ANY devs if that's what it sounded like I apologize. But I believe many are aware of the ****ty wifi drivers with aosp roms that's all I was saying.

I have this problem as well. My AOSP will show 2 bars when three is full, even when one foot away from my router. Same goes for cell signal. If i am sitting at home i get about 2 bars on Sense, 0 on AOSP. And its not the "AOSP tells you the true signal" bs. When on sense it operates just fine. Restore an AOSP rom, no signal, no calls. It sucks, but i bear with it cuz i love that CM7. With that said, I sure later versions will be even better, and will address the issue. It seems pretty widespread.
Bump... same issue here.

I've noticed the same thing. I'm assuming the way Sense ROMS are woven into the framework of the phone is the reason for the difference in signal strength. I love AOSP roms but the signal quirks are just too much for me at this point to make the switch permanent.
Hello, I know there was a lot of questions like mine, but, I can't compare it in the same time (I mean, comparing wifi strength), I have only one DHD
Which rom has better wifi signal reception? I know that this is more related to radio, not to rom, but, I would like to know, what is your opinion and what are your experiences? I have CyanogenMod 7.0.3 and recommended radio 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2, and I think that wifi is a little bit less powerful than on e.g. Android Revolution 5.x and with the same radio, I'm not talking about bars and other indicators, I'm talking about "dBm". Around my house (close to exit doors) I have wifi signal on ARHD, and it was stable signal, and on CM7 I have there signal too, but it's not as stable as on ARHD. What is your opinion about that? Regards
Ei! Logically they influence many variables here ... type of baseband, rom, power of the sign wifi, situation of the issuer and the recipient ... it is a diffuse enough question i think...
because What serves me can that it does not serve you...
it´s only my opinion
+1 on SERGL's answer there. the ROM's are going to be using different kernels and have different methods of distributign power to the wifi chipset. Also you may have noticed Wifi is a strage beast when it comes to signals, the oddest thing can affect it (qualified network technician, don't get me started on wireless algorithms), heck even being in the path of it can affect it.
To answer your Question though in my personal experience they have been very similar, some radios have given me better signal strength than other but at the cost of battery.
Suck it and see...
Hi vBB
Yea.. I agree with both SERGI.3210 and wbbigdave. However, from what I understand that questions like these are pretty subjective. It have tonnes of factors that is almost impossible to be listed here. Lol.
It might not be the ROM and/or Radio etc that caused it to be weak but the telco companies themselves that caused the problem.

yeah mate..i´m with you. there are a lot of variables that make influence in the strenght signal
its a very subjective question, for example im living in a town and my house dates of 1910 more or less!!! The walls have 40 cm of thickness LOL this influences also enough
I noticed a significant difference in signal strength and resilience on TouchWiz roms as compared to AOSP roms. I've tried this on a number of radios (LJ7, LG8, LI3, LIH) and gotten the same results. I assume it's just perceived as I can't think of a reason why the rom would influence signal strength. Nonetheless, when I'm on TouchWiz I can walk all around my house and get ~-70 to -80dBm. On AOSP roms, if I leave it in a particular corner of my house I can get ~ -70dBm, but as soon as I leave that corner it shoots to -90+dBm (and subsequently boots me from LTE). Is there a reason that this could happen? Does it have something to do with the data handoff in TouchWiz vs. AOSP? Also, one thing to note is that on CM10 and 10.1, my Mobile Network Type is LTE:13 and on TW roms it's LTE:14. From what I understand, there's no real difference in LTE13/14 right? Has anyone else experienced this?
Interesting you mention this. I just posted a thread on a similar problem. See if this is your issue.

I've also noticed this. On tw I can only get 3g when I'm at work in certain areas but when I'm on aosp I usually get lte although its only 2 to 4mbps its way better than the 1mbps I would normally receive on 3g

Yes, this seems to be the exact thing I experience when on an AOSP rom. Anyone know what could cause TW roms to have a more resilient signal?

This is actually what I was wondering. I wasn't sure if the dBm you see under About Phone > Status was raw data or processed data. Is there any evidence to suggest Samsung perhaps averages out dBm over time, so that it doesn't fluctuate as wildly as it would in a AOSP rom?
I'm not sure, possibly a root tool would be able to accomplish this. I have a widget that says my signal. However I'm on aosp. Not sure. I can get a link one sec

I just got an S3. Yikes.
Even with a solid Wifi signal streaming is very choppy. On voice calls, this is the first phone I've ever had that drops calls mid conversation from home. And I've had a lot of phones on my three lines over 13 years here. Finally, LTE reception in L.A. is not great which is a problem because the phone takes too long to switch off LTE to 3G so I find that I often have no data connection at all even though solid 3G signal is available.
I tried all kinds of tweaks to make the WiFi work better (static IP, different bandwidths, etc) and nothing worked.
Sprint kept telling me to exchange my handset so I'm on my third one and had the same problem with all three.
I'm running out of time on my 14 days so hoping for some ROM guidance so I don't have to kick the tires with a bunch of ROMs trying to find the best performance. I don't want to feel like a beta tester so please only recommend stable ROMs. Don't really care about anything other features, in fact I kind of like to keep it simple. I just want stability and solid wireless performance.
Thanks in advance.

I'll ask the obvious question: Did you update your phone with all the OTAs since it came out of the box?
If not, do this, then compare.
There are pockets in LA that have spotty reception, and you may live/work in an area. For me, I work in Downtown and get solid reception with no dropped calls, even in a building which is a nightmare for all network carriers.. I enjoy the AOSP built ROMS, but they seem to create signal problems with phones. So I suggest staying away from those.
I do recommend MIJJz 4.1.2 ROM which is a Sprint leak of the latest build. My phone seems to get improved reception quality and data signal strength. Up until I switched to MIJJz ROM it would take up to 30 seconds in my work building to get updates on Tweetcaster. Now, I get updates in mere seconds. For example, I've been able to keep up on all the football recruits who have signed with UCLA today, including Kylie FItts signing. Good luck to you.
GO BRUINS!!!
BOOM!!!

The evo lte will be a waste of time cuz its identical hardware to the s3 as far as radios and soc. I do not have the issues that you or op speak of. Streaming videos is hit or miss cuz of the server not the phone or wifi. Maybe it could be router and wifi only in the instance if the video you are streaming is not in a web browser and the router and wifi access point dont like the ports the stream is trying to use and keeps re negiotiating.
I came from the evo lte, I dropped more calls on that than on my gs3.
Download and install the MA4 modem. You will get the best reception out of TW ROMs. I'm on MOAR and it is great. I also have gotten great reception on The Peoples ROM and Darth Stalker. Any of the TW ROMS should be good. I received very poor reception on AOSP ROMs though. Also make sure your PRL and Profile are updated. Most likely it is Sprint and not the phone though. A ROM cant make something out of nothing. I know my area is receiving upgrades and I went from 1 bar always at my house to 3-4 just in the last couple of weeks.

I've never had any issues with reception only on aosp ROMs but I would suggest getting darthstalker ROM and flashing the MA4 kernel it offers the best signal on any ROM I've had and believe me I've flash almost all and above that you get the best battery life and has some pretty good signal and data speed tweaks

I second the MA4 suggestion, you can try the stock or stock+root variant in the development section, I'm getting improved reception and speeds since moving to it.
Also, do some searching for the thread which tells you how to bypass the sprint proxies , that improved my music streaming performance over 3g as well.

actually on the contrary, my experience has been fantastic with Evo Lte
it never lost the signals and data (3G ) was practically double.
occasional low memory and the fascination of BLACK to be black brought me to s3 .
a couple of my friends also say that their LTEs are way better as far as reception and data speed are concerned.
TBH i am still trying to find a way to not let my s3 lose reception here and there.
Though its pretty new but i guess i might try darthstalker's with ma4 kernel
thanks
