The power button on my wife's HTC Desire is faulty and becomes unresponsive at times.
When this happens, it means sge cannot get access to the phone unless she either plugs in/unplugs charger, receives a call or removes/reinserts battery (phone will power up automatically when button playing up)
Phone is out of warranty and cannot get repaired right now, so what i want to know is, does anyone know of an app that can be installed that could set other buttons on the phone to activate screen when screen is off?
Any advice would be appreciated

Thank you all for your responses, i have installed widgetlocker (on desire and my own galaxy s).
on the initial start up it does advise to go unto settings to be able to set any hardware key to activate screen. But i cannot find the settings :-\ the menu icon only locks the screen as does the icon in status bar.
Can you please help me find the settings?

Open widgetlocker from your app draw. This will cause the lockscreen to appear but is actually 'tool mode'.
Now press your menu button > settings > buttons and inputs > check Easy Wake. Done.

But all sorted, my wife is a happy bunny now, many thanks :-D

You can remove htc lockscreen and have the vanilla android one... Or use widget locker (available in the market) and customize your lockscreen how you want it.
Hands down Widget Locker
Widget Locker does cost a couple bucks but it is very worth it. You can have up to 6 (vanilla) sliding options with a app in the middle to select. You can put your favorite clock/weather app etc... There are thousands of combination's. The think I like the most about it is the ability to drag the notification bar down right after pressing the power button. No more pressing power then unlocking the screen to check your text messages etc... Then of course there are lots of setting options to make the volume button, menu button and even home button active while in lock screen. As you can see I'm a big fan
Is it a safe app though ? So many permissions .
Is it normal 4 a lock screen 2 want so much info ?

I had my evo since day one last year and now it's time to get it replaced ... my power button is sinking and it takes forever to unlock/lock my phone. I found an app to lock my phone but does anyone how to unlock their phone by pressing the volume keys?
I could unroot my phone and get a new replacement, but that's definitely a pain in the butt...
Someone please help!
Thanks!

you don't need to unroot it if you have insurance... just take it outside and run it over (so they cant tell it is rooted) and tell them you need a new one..
actually they don't cover the battery or back cover so just stab the screen
Lol ok... I guess that's the best choice?
There has to be a different way to unlock our evo's...

There is a free app in the market called tap tap that unlocks it with the sensor. It works fairly decent

NoLock will let you unlock with the volume keys.
Thanks everyone!
All your feedbacks were very helpful. Ill use the apps and not break my phone for now lol

WidgetLocker lets you do this, it's a lock screen replacement. Use the easy wake option in settings. If you don't need/want a lockscreen, NoLock should do the same thing.
I don't use my power button at all unless I'm powering the phone on or using recovery. I'm trying to avoid this problem.

I could sell you a power button for 5 dollars plus shipping if the actual motherboard piece is not the problem, assuming it's the actual button?
button remapper will do it too

my dysplay won t turn off only if i press the power buttn when connect it to a charger . Is it any settings that allows the screen to turn off without pressing that button ? thx !
I'm not too sure exactly what you mean, but check
Settings / display / screen timeout
Make sure never turn off is NOT selected.

Are you using stock charger, and is it same through ac and usb?
Weird, but I feel it's something simple.

Excellent, don't know why I forgot about that one. Maybe it's the jetlag and no sleep for nearly 2 days. Glad it's sorted.
Edit: knew it was something simple.

Hi guys does amyone know any keyboard shortcuts or combination where I can go to home screen directly instead of going back one screen at a time...i know esc and right click does this but say I'm on a webpage but need to go to home screen to go to a different application.
Secondly I want to access menu items without having to reach the phone to press a button. Thanks

Hello thanks for peeking at this post.
I want to use my capacative buttons in the same way I did on my Galaxy S.
At the moment as there is no dedicated menu button (only the task switcher) a lot of apps - including this XDA app show a bar with three dots and take away from the screen real estate to give me menu options.
Anyone know how I can make the middle button a long press for task manager and use the right button as a menu button (which would hopefully remove this stupid long bar which I find totally stupid and detracts from my enjoyment of this device?
any advice greatly appreciated.

Err....any rom in the development section!
Anyone got a mod that can be done on stock? I dont want to use HTC dev to unlock incase it turns into a duck due to hardware fault (nothing to do with Rom flashing) and it needs to be returned.
