Important videos won't play back anywhere 720p - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recorded several very epic videos in 720p, they won't playback on my phone or pc! I used
Kingdom b1; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071547
and this camera app; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084195
I've tried vlc, windows media player, quicktime, and on my Evo I tried astro and the stock htc gallery app.

not sure what your prob is. People running the same set up are having no probs. I did notice that the format looks like its 3gp. If it is 3gp that may be your prob and u need to either use a 3gp video playerthat can do 3gp like vlc or convert it to avi or mp4 format. The evo stock records in mp4 so maybe the camera app you are using can record in diferent formats.

Try playing the video yourself.

Yeah tried playing it myself and does not work. Like i said b4 the video format that you have is 3gp and quicktime and most other players do not play that video format. If u want to play this with quicktime then u need to find a 3gp to mp4 video converter. I do not know why your video format is 3gp but that is your problem. Quicktime native compatible formats are AIFF, WAV, DV-DIF, MP3 and mp4, Also with addon components it can play ASF, DivX Media Format, Flash Video, Matroska, Ogg. So like i have said about three times already u need to convert the video from 3gp to mp4 or one of the native file formats quicktime supports. Here is a link to a pretty good converter http://download.cnet.com/AoA-iPod-PSP-3GP-MP4-Converter/3000-2194_4-10531870.html

My video's have always recorded in .3gp format. I can play back videos recorded in WVGA in .3gp but not 720p. Seems Kingdom b1 won't record 720p on my phone.
HW 004, if that helps.
And the video won't convert into anything else, renaming to .mp4 or .avi and so on doesn't help either.

mp4 files from camera app

hi, i have recorded 3 movie clips with my tytn, i have wm6 installed. i sent this movies to my macbook. now i tried to watch them. no chance, only vlc can play them but without sound. what the hell, why does this codec suck so much? i have tried it in media player, and quicktime in osx. they cant play it. it should be said that quicktime can play mpeg4 files, but what is mp4?
anyone knows what codec i have to install to convert it to another format?
and why ms cant play videos from their own mobile apps?
regards, chief
I have no problems playing mp4 on my PC. I have K-lte codec pack installed but I think ffdshow is the codec being used to play it.
Mp4 should be just seen as a container for the video and audio, like .avi or .mkv. I actually use mp4 to encode my files for my PocketPC and get great quality, the upside is that these files also play on other mobile devices; my girlfriend can play them on her Samsung U600.
You running a MS OS on your Mac?
yes, i have tried it in windows xp, but i have no codec packs installed. i think the problem is, that this is not a normal mp4, the video track is ok, but the audio track is identified as "samr".
wtf is samr?
gg
omg
think the only thing i need is this samr codec for mac. in the apple docs i found the information that quicktime comes with amr support, but i think samr is not amr, so i need this codec, anyone ere who can ell me rom where i can download this?

Best Video Setting for Smooth Video?

Anyone know what is the best setting for smooth video playback when viewing in Touch Pro 2?
I have download the Transformers 2 Trailer in FLV format and playback on my Touch Pro 2 but it seems to be laggy.
Anyone can advise me whether it is the video format problem or the phone memory problem as I have installed many applications.

Can only get on youtube through my Rhodium at work but isn't that video HD?
It's got a pretty fast processor for a phone but it's still only 533MHz, it can't playback HD content!
I've seen a couple of DivX movies (700MB each) on my TP2 and I have no lag issues...
In fact, I did had that, but back then I was using the player supplied with DivX codecs for Windows Mobile. Once I started using Core Player, the "lag" was gone.
I'll try that YouTube HD video in FLV format and get back to you.
BTW, what player are you using?
Yea i have no issues at all with any video format with coreplayer with the exception of mkvs.

I am also using Core Player for playing back the above FLV format file.
Sorry for the delay guys, but during my video speed testing , I found that although Core Player is supposed to play MP4 files (so they say), on my TP2 Core Player says "Player: Video codec (AVC aka H.264) not supported by the player!". So it seems that I have no H.264 codecs installed, which is strange because the H.264 codec is quite common on DivX. Well, I guess the movies I've been playing were not H.264 encoded.
This happened because I downloaded (without converting) both Transformers 2 trailers (LowRes and HD) from that link. The LowRes version came in FLV format (4MB), and the HD is a 33MB MP4 file. The FLV plays flawlessly without hiccups or delays.
I'm still searching for H.264 codecs for Windows Mobile, and will report back to this topic after installing and testing the video.
The HTC player will playback mp4's encoded with H.264, so long as they're Standard Definition with stereo audio.

I have download the same file again by copying the Videoplayback file in FLV Format from Internet Explorer Temporary Files Folder, file size is 12.2MB instead of 4MB.
How you can get 4MB and how you download the Low Res file? The playback is a bit jerky and not so smooth but after comparing the original one in YouTube, it is also a bit jerky and not smooth so there is nothing wrong with the Touch Pro 2 Playback as the problem lies on the source itself.
What you wanna do is get Coreplayer.
Encode your videos into Divx with vertical res. of 720 or under and keep the bitrate under 1500kb/s.
Great image quality with approx 112% playback speed.

I have used Coreplayer for playback.
Tried encoding "The Black Knight" Movie in the below format :
1) Width x Height (704 x 296)
2) Bit Rate (64kbs)
3) Audio Format (Lame MP3)
4) Frame Rate (23 frames/second)
5) Data Rate (1031 kbs)
6) video Sample Size (24 bit)
7) Video Compression (XVID)
There is some portion of the playback jerky and not smooth, any problem with the above settings?

You could try downloading that little encoding program.
It encodes your files into the perfect format for HTC Album. The user interface of the program is very easy and it encodes your files so that they play with full resolution and a good bitrate. Hope I could have been of help. All credit goes to it's creator.

I used a Firefox addon that "strips" the contents out of the pages (videos, sounds, SWF, ...). It can also be used to convert to other video formats while downloading, but I didn't use this feature as I wanted to test with the real deal.
I double-checked just now, and the smaller file (LowRes) is 4.76MB and it's fully functional and it plays 'till the end. The HD is 33,9MB. Perhaps there's a different file version when you stream directly from the internet... it doesn't make much sense, but I'm just guessing.
I didn't had time to continue searching for the right codecs yet. But I'll give it a go tomorrow. I'm sure I was not the 1st to experience this "issue" and the codecs "should" exist somewhere... so I hope.

Thanks for your recommendation and I recode the video again, it is much smoother playing over the WMP.
Will use this program to encode future DVD or Video for playback in my Touch Pro 2.

Anime Video Player (MKV with subs)

I miss watching anime on the go. I am trying to get away from having to convert my videos to the psp. I was hoping there would be some way to do it on my EVO. The videos are MKV with subs.
I have tried
Stock - Does not play
RockPlayer - MKV plays but no subs
Mplayer - Does not play
YxPlayer- MKV players but no subs (and stupid advertisement in the middle of the video)
-------------------------
Anyone know any apps that play MKV with subs? Also if I were to convert with handbrake, what settings should I use to make it look good and have subs?
I know vplayer supports mkv, no idea about subs. Also, it's very much an alpha release.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
thanks for the suggestion but Vplayer does mkvs fine but no subs.
Any other suggestions?
rockplayer's site says it has subtitle support but to what end i'm not sure, i would love to check for you but all my anime's subs are hardcoded =P
I downloaded a divx player named "demoplayer" and it works fine.
Havne't tried it, but this player:
http://mvideoplayer.info/
Touts a bunch of subtitle format support.
I tried it. I posted the results in the OP. It doesn't work for me the HTC evo because it doesn't originally play mkv files
its not a video player, and you still have to convert them but this works great.

vPlayer plays subs fine, just extract subs from your mkv using mkvextract (gui version if you prefer) or other extractor. if the sub isnt srt you can convert it with subtitle workshop or other app. ASS and SSA subs dont work, I tested, but
a 720p mkv enconded in h264 and audio in aac with the srt in the same foder with the same file name works like a charm on my evo.

[Q]Can we record video in MP4 format?

Hi,
I want to know whether I can record Videos in MP4 format in my DHD instead of 3GP. I feel compression in MP4 is much lessor than in 3GP and it will result in a better videos. Please let me know if there is any Mod/App to do this.
thanks...

Mp4 like 3gp is just the container. Actually the codec used for the video stream is the same as the one commonly used in mp4 files - h264. So the only benefit in recording in mp4 is compatibility, because mp4 is more widely spread across media players than 3gp. For instance my TV can play mp4 files via USB but not 3gp.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
And so ?
Any one found a solution ?
I'm interrested too and I'm currently browsing the web for a solution.
It was so easy to change the video format with the HD2.
Why have they make this choise of only 3gp ?
find a converter 3gp to MP4
Anyone found a solution for this?
I would like to record in MP4 because of compatibility issues with mediaplayers. Renaming the recorded files from .3gp to .mp4 works for me, but I don't want to do this manually.
This is the closest I've been so far (Replacing HTCCamera with Google Camera):

What app are you using? I'm pretty sure media players like RockPlayer and VPlayer play mp4's just fine (don't have any on my phone right now to check though).
MP4 is a container format, so different MP4s might have been encoded in different ways (e.g. frame rate, frame size) by different encoders.
It's a lot more complicated than something like MP3.
So just because one MP4 won't work doesn't mean that a different MP4 may not work either.

Good point. Though almost all MP4s use the H.264 or H.263 codec (with some of the older ones still using MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 streams, but even those will more commonly use an avi container or mpg). All of these are supported by RockPlayer (and I think VPlayer), though there may be stuttering issues if the frame size is too large or bitrate is too high.
For the OP, what exactly did you mean by playing the mp4 file did not work?
I tried playing a movie that is a mp4 file. It says not supported

What app are you using for playback though? The built-in one? That one has very limited support for video file types (I think H.264, H.263, and MPEG-4 SP). I think MP4's have to use the H.264 codec. If you want to play other types of files, you will need to download another app that has this support.
