I've noticed this week that I've got a line showing on all my new pictures. I've attached an example.
I remember my phone had fallen on thick carpet a few weeks ago and it may be linked to that fall.
So I'm wondering if the lens is broken.
What is weird is that when I do the focus for my picture the image is perfect, no line at all. And when the picture is taken this line appears. Are the image showed while you prepare the picture and the picture taken by 2 different lenses?
I've wiped the glass that's in front of the lens and checked whether I saw some kind of breakage but I don't see any (which doesn't mean it's not broken).
I've also tried taking a picture with another application and it also shows that line.
Do you think my lens is broken? And why does the line appear only once the picture has been taken?
Thanks
It could be that a line of the CCD is not functioning correctly, you might not be able to see it when focusing your phone because the image is higher resolution than the screen itself. I'm by no means an expert though, so I could easily be wrong.
Does the line always appear in the same place? It could be a CCD issue like mentioned above. Also, look through your gallery and see what date the line started, and try to correlate it to a specific event (you mentioned the fall). Something else you can try, though I don't know if it will help much, but backup your SD card to your computer and reformat it. It could be an issue with saving. Does the line appear when you look at it through Gallery or only when you blow it up on the PC? Or do you see the line in Gallery when you zoom in on the pic?
Do you have a video recorder on your phone? If you do, record a clip and see if the line appears. Try to view it on the phone and the computer
Other than that, I don't know of anything else other than a warranty replacement. Looking at the line I'm leaning more towards hardware damage, but I can be incorrect.
Thanks guys!

Yes the line always appear at the same place. I had already checked the date the line first appeared. The problem is I don't take pictures very often so I just know it appeared between mid-January and last week and that in between my phone fell on the carpet
I can see the line both in the Gallery (with or without zooming) and on the PC.
Interesting: I have recorded a video as you suggested and I can see no line. What's the difference between the way the camera and the video recorder work?
I will try formatting the SD card in a few days if I don't find any solution but like you I have the feeling this is a problem with hardware.
Definitely a dead row of pixels in the CCD. This ought to be a warranty issue, if your phone is still new enough.
It may not show up in videos, or in downscaled photos (i.e. if you set your camera to smaller resolutions) because of the way the image is processed, combining information from multiple rows of pixels essentially 'blurring out' the bad information. I presume you will only notice this when recording the highest camera resolution.
Sorry for the bad news. I think there is no cure except replacement.

BUt if there was a dead row of Pixed, then wouldnt it appear while focusing or constantly when the phone is running a game or something?

Negative. The CCD would only be used for the digital imaging, not for the display of the actual phone. Which is why it only affects captured images. A way to test it, download "ShootMe" from the market and take a screen shot. No lines.

The line is probably still there, but because of the recording quality it may not be rendering in the captured video. I'm sure if you recorded 720p you may be able to see a faint detection of the line, since it doesn't look too major in the still shots.

I'm leaning with this guy. Just forget to mention the whole "oops I dropped it" mess. And make sure that you keep it stock (I know your signature says that you're running stock, but how often do we update signatures anymore). Other than that it should be covered under warranty replacement, seeing how it hasn't been out for over a year yet (wasn't the DZ released like 1 Nov 2010?).
Thanks everyone!
I've justed tested video recording in 720p and I don't see the line.
I'm not rooted yet as I'm with 1.72 version and I would have to downgrade etc. so it won't be any problem to bring my phone back But this means I can't install Shootme and make the test either.
I am going to contact HTC to see how I can have my phone repaired or replaced. Hope there's a way to fix the problem easily and rapidly as I can't imagine having to go back to my HD2 for several weeks

Did you try a hard reset?
No, I haven't tried. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fix the issue and as I wouldn't have the time for restoring everything (I can't use Titanium Backup) I prefer not doing a factory reset.
I've asked HTC how I can have my phone repaired: I would have to send my phone to a repair center which isn't a solution that fits me.
They also suggested to try starting in safe mode. I've followed their instructions (Check that the phone is turned off. Then turn it on. When you see the HTC logo press Volume Down button until phone vibrates.). But all I have is the bootloader and it doesn't propose safe mode
I've googled and searched on the forum to find a way to launch that safe mode but haven't found the solution for the moment ...
Hey guys,
A few hours ago, I turned on my stock camera app, only to be greeted with a bunch of vertical pink/purple lines - with no image of what I was aiming my camera at present on my screen. How did this happen now? It worked fine this afternoon, and this was the first time something like this ever happened to me.
No matter, I did some searching around, and found some posts regarding the "camera sensor" and how a person fixed it by "switching it out". It was pretty ambiguous and I have no idea what he meant. At this point, I'm hoping for the worst, thinking its a hardware defect.
Anyway, the next few threads I see talk about radio and setting the phone to airplane mode before use.
I don't think I have a problem with the radio, it has always been fine so far (32U_5.11.05.27), so I tried the airplane mode fix, and somehow, all camera functionality has been restored (no more purple/pink lines).
So my question is, how did this happen? Will it happen again? Can I totally rule out that its not a hardware defect?
I had the same issue some time ago with my old rom (can't remember which one it was exactly) ,just rebooted the phone and prob was gonnne.Been 1 month with no issues so far...
As to the reason,it could be a great deal of them, but my money is on the rom (if it's not a stock one.)
That's good to hear, but I actually did try rebooting (and also clearing out camera data/cache, for whatever reason) to no avail.
Toggling airplane mode was what did it for me, but still, I'm curious on how this happens / might happen again in the future
Hi again -- need your help or suggestions.
Not sure if any of these are related, but I'll just throw them out and see if any of these can help solve this problem.
- Rooted, previously on Tnz Blend, then moved on to AOKP ICS rom. In both cases, the camera worked great.
- Went to the beach over the weekend. The phone was left in the center pocket with a small case of wet wipes. When I took the phone out after 5 hours, I noticed condensation in the front-facing camera, but not the main camera
- Did not launch/check camera until next morning. That's when the camera stopped working. The camera app would launch, bottom capacitive buttons light up per usual, but screen would be all black. If I press the physical buttons a few times, the message "Camera is not responding. Would you like to close it? Wait/Report/OK"
- I just flashed to CM9 Alpha 4 rom and same message appears.
So I'm not sure what to make of it. Can you assist?

First off to test it I would odin back to stock and see if the problem still exist. Use sfhubs EL29 one click. Start there first

Thanks for the quick response! Noob question: Where can I find sfhub's EL29 one-click? After I test in that environment, what next?
Okay, tested it on GB, here are my findings:
1. Camera app launches, with all controls visible. Viewfinder/screen is black (and yes, I checked to see the lens was covered)
2. No response when I click on any of the controls (just clicking feedback sound)
3. I exit out of the app, then open it again, and this time all I see is a black screen with no controls
4. If I wait awhile (30 secs?), the same error appears "Activity Camera (in application Camera) is not responding. Force close/Wait".
5. One time I left the dialog box in point 4 open, and the controls became visible in the background again. So I clicked Wait, and the "Camera application failed" dialog box appeared.
Something tells me its corrupt. I also tried a 3rd party app in GB and ICS -- same thing.
What now?
Contacted Samsung service and they deduced that "From the information you have provided while troubleshooting, we determine that the problem is with the device. So, phone needs to get physically examined by the authorized Samsung technician".
They said that I have to send it in and it'll be a few days without a phone.
Could it just be a faulty camera connection/camera module that I can change myself?
Confirmed that it's hardware-related. I tried turning on flashlight/torch, guess what? It didn't work either.
So I have three options:
a. Send it in to Samsung and get it repaired under warranty. Downsides: Have to unroot, clear personal data and be without a phone for at least a week.
b. Open it up and see if it's just a loose connection. Downside: Voids the warranty
c. Buy a spare camera module and replace it myself. Downsides: Voids the warranty and more money out of my pocket (anybody have a spare that they can part with? I tried eBay, but not much luck)
Out of curiosity, is the rear/main camera part number for the Epic 4g Touch the same as the Galaxy S II?
Okay, this is good, but weird -- my camera, flash/flashlight suddenly started working again. Hope it stays that way.
I have the same problem OP would it be free to repair if I sent it to samsung?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out. It seems that whenever I take pictures with my e4gt they look fine on the phone, and then when i download them to my computer they look fine when i'm looking at them on the computer, but then when i try to print them the pictures come out really dark (even if i take the pictures with flash). I thought it was my printer but this doesn't happen when i take pictures with my cybershot so i don't think it's my printer. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?
Thanks,
Mason
Turn on out door visibility and see what happens
From the 2nd galaxy
Just tried that, the picture came out the same as before, maybe a little darker...
I have a few ideas.
Turning on "auto contrast" seemed to make mine a little brighter, even though that's not what that tool is supposed to do.
Also, if you go to white balance you can see settings for the environment where you are shooting. Daylight, cloudy, incandescent, and others. Also, you might be able to change exposure value, too.
Well, just try and screw around in the settings until it brightens, or just use something like Paint.NET or Photoshop to brighten them.
I've tried that and I still have no luck, Also sometimes when I go to take pictures i notice a weird buzzing noise coming from the phone, maybe the camera is broken? I need to take in my phone for service anyway because the aux jack is messed up (in the headphones arn't in a certain way you start to hear loud crackles) so maybe they can fix this too...If anyone has any other ideas that i can try out until i get a chance to take the phone in let me know I would definitely love to get at least the camera working, or maybe i just have to wait till sprint finally rolls out an ics update to get it fixed..i love this phone but the camera, aux and gps issues are killing me
Our camera software sucks!
It doesn't sound like anyone else is having this issue. You never told us what rom you're using for this. Some developers may make changes to the camera app in their roms. You may also want to try a stock rom to address this because photos print fine from my custom stock based rom. Have you had the opportunity to try a different printer btw? Take the photos to work and print a couple off there.
I'm currently running a el29 stock rooted, is there another rom i should try?
Hey, I received August security patch today and I noticed that pictures taken in night mode are taking more size, they have more detail and that's good, but there's more noise than before. Pictures taken in Auto still don't have noise though.
Did someone notice this? I have the S9 exynos model.
Most of the photos taken with night mode still look very noisy in darker scenarios, october security patch installed.
Does anyone have this issue?
Same here, night mode suxs.
What I noticed is that night mode only performs well on its initial release. Its quality was easy better than in normal photo mode. However, after few updates, night mode sucks already. Now I prefer normal photo mode especially when hdr kicks in. Night mode, in its initial release have a really good light management, giving a better dynamic range

Yes, I hope samsung will fix this issue soon.
I reported the problem at samsung members and they told me to reset my device settings. But I already had reset the camera settings so resetting other settings won't change anything...
Edit: I just asked an agent in a live chat and he told me to send the bug report with some pictures to show the issue so samsung can fix it as soon as possible. Let's hope they will listen to us.
I reported the bug and they told me to reset connection settings for whatever reason. I asked the agent again and he told me that this hasn't anything to do with the camera. So he told me to reset my device's settings. I told him that it's a software issue because everyone I asked is facing the same problem so he told me to wait for the android 10 update. Seems like it's going to launch soon
I upgraded to november security patch yesterday, the noise seems to happen less often than before, but the highlights are still blown and the photo isn't clean in lower light, it's soft and it has a weird noise in it. And sometimes I got some flaring around the lights. There's a lot of inconsistency in this mode.
How can we tell Samsung to fix this issue?
Agents in live chat just keep telling me to reset settings or wait for the next update.
Well image quality is sure to degrade when taking photos in poor-lighting conditions. The camera compensates for this by raising the ISO level, but this has the unwanted of effect of creating a muddy looking picture.

With june and july updates I was able to take perfect night photos even in darker scenarios. But after august update the photos are much worse.
Look at the pics below, you can see how the ones one the left (june and july updates) are clean and the ones on the right (after august update) are just noisy and not as sharp.
