Keyboard Issue - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is something I've just noticed in the past few days but it's driving me crazy. When I try to use an exclamation point on the hard keyboard, it only gives me the period. Then, when I hit backspace to delete that, it deletes my entire message. It's like my phone knows I hit the function button, but it isn't registering the exclamation point. I'm rooted, using SRF 1.1.1. Not sure why it's doing this, but I don't think it's ROM specific. Please help!

UPDATE: Turns out the SwiftKey Beta was the culprit. Changed my keyboard to anything other than Swiftkey, and my hardware keyboard worked as it should.

keyboard not working at times?

seems like everytime I open a text message and go to respond, the keys dont work. I can feel the haptic feedback but no text is entered. I have to exit the app and reenter.. Its not only in Messages, but all apps. Other buttons on the screen seem to work, but the buttons do not.
anyone else been noticing this?
Yup!
I've noticed it most typing in the text box of forums... though it is inconsistent.

Yeah mine does that too and it takes a few seconds to get out of the loop then it can type again. Kinda weird wonder if any fix to this.
Keyboard Issues
+1 to this issue
One exception: My keyboard is typing but it doesn't visually show what I'm typing. When I close the keyboard and reopen it the words I typed then show, but nothing typed further will show unless I close the keyboard and reopen it again.......Again this issue is inconsistent.
I've only had this issue since the 2.2 update.
Anyone got a fix yet?
is anyone running the Overclock widget? It seems like once the message pops up "overclock widget has been granted superuser permissions" everything returns to normal... until I go to respond again ahhhhh
i have the same problem i was wondering if anyone knows how to fix it i thought my phone was goin bad really quickly because i like just got it a couple weeks ago but i dont know what the deal is
if i goto messages i can press all the keys and nothin comes up and if i go to landscape the box is gray and i feel it has to kick in later
another problem i have been having is when i click on to call someone itll call them like 20 seconds later instead of immediately anyone else get this problem too?
i find that if I turn the phone into landscape mode, click the bubble, then turn the phone right side up again.. It works... seems more like a software bug then anything.. or something to do with the sensors.
My friend's Evo running stock FroYo has had this problem. I haven't seen it, but I am running a custom rom. I wonder if that makes a difference.

i'm on Fresh 3.1.0.1
Have u guys tried a different keyboard? Like the Droid x keyboard?
I'm on fresh too and I notice this bug. Only in messages though.

I'm running stock froyo and this happens quite often to me as well. If I wait a few seconds after I notice nothing typing on my screen it will eventually catch up and let me type normally again. This happens daily.

What keyboard are people using? I thought it was a Swype thing, but it sounds like the problem is more general.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yea it is a general problem i uninstalled all my keyboards and have the stock one and i still get the same problem

swype moody

i'm having issues with swype i have beta access and the installer but i've noticed that it works when it wants to when i swype a word the keyboard flashes and is outlined in blue.... has this happened to anyone else?
If so is there a fix? open to suggestions for a fix i don't want to use the regular keyboard anymore......
If this happened to me, I would just switch keyboards by long pressing a text box and change the input method to the stock keyboard and then again to change it back to swype.
Would fix the problem for me, it seems that you might get it more often though. If the problem persists after doing this and after restarting your phone, maybe you should reinstall.
Yeah I've been doing that but its kinda messed up

[Q] Keyboard Issues after OTA

Just wanted to see if anyone is having issues using the keyboard after the OTA sent out today. Using the stock Sense Keyboard the auto-prediction is skipping some of my keystrokes if i type too fast. For instance (just one example) when I type "doing" the "n" and "g" are relatively close so if i type too fast it clicks the "n" in but then if i hit "g" too quickly afterward it will forgo entering the "n" and the auto-correct will then change the word to "Doug". Which really sucks haha. Just curious if this is a huge complaint for anyone else.
Yup I'm getting this also, for some reason it is skipping key strokes.

i knew im not the only one, the prediction keeps skipping the ones that i really want it to say. prediction usually pops up with the word im using even if i miss 1 letter but prediction misses the whole thing it goes to another word.
its also lagging
This is the worst. Don't know if I can stand it for much longer. And now because we OTA we can't root to go to a different Rom

people actually use prediction? my god you have to sit there and stair at the words that it predicts and then choose the right one, and by that time you have already typed the word and are onto the 2nd or 3rd word afterthat.
this happened to me right when i got my phone. the HTC keyboard couldnt keep up, and that was without prediction or any of that crap on.
i switched to Smart Keyboard Pro and coulnt be happier.
turn off all the prediction crap and auto capitalize, and other garbage and see if the key strokes keep up.
if it doesnt then you got keyboard issues
try a different keyboard app and see what happens.
It doesnt have anything to do with the autoprediction not working its the keyboard not recording the correct keystrokes.
Does anyone have any alternatives to the stock keyboard other than the one already suggested?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I felt like it has something to do with the fps update. Like I was used to typing on a slow keyboard and now its more sensitive. Btw the stock keyboard blows major ****.

ppl actually use the stock keyboard???
So I figured out a solution to the problem for any of you guys out there that are having the same issue. I flashed a few different roms but the same problem with the keyboard kept persisting.
However once I flashed a different kernel on the phone the keyboard worked the way it worked before the newest OTA. I tried the BFS kernel and the BakedSnack kernel and they both fixed the issue with the keyboard. Just a heads up guys.

Im stock and having this issue too. Its driving me crazy, I have to type so slow to make sure things are going thru properly. Any suggestions?
Have any of you noticed if this happens when the phone is charging versus when you're running on battery?

The only one I can offer is to root the phone and flash a custom kernel/rom. Totally fixed the issue for me. Just stay away from the HTC #11 kernel, seems to be the issue.

No the issue happens whether the phone is plugged in or not. Definitely has to do with the new HTC #11 kernel because even when flashing roms using that kernel, I have the same problem with the keyboard.

It only happens to me when I'm typing while charging. Still very frustrating.

Swiftkey x

Anyone have problems using Swiftkey X on their GN? When I try to install, Swiftkey will let me pick the language in the setup app, but none of the other options work. You hit the button, but nothing happens. I was able to manual set some of the options in "input" section of my settings. Thing is, when I get to step four of the install (choose my typing style), I hit the button but nothing happens and you can't progress any further. Then if you try to customize Swiftkey's settings, an error pops up saying you must complete the installation first.
I can get the keyboard to load, but there are no predictions.
Worked just fine for me.

Haven't had a problem either. I have been using it since I got the phone yesterday morning. Feel silly noting this, but maybe a reinstall?
No problems here.
Also working fine for me.
I actually havent even touched it since using the stock keyboard which is a huge improvement.
had my GN for 2 days now and been using swiftkey x almost from the beginning w/o any issues. i still prefer swiftkey because of the good predictions.
Works fine for me, had Swiftkey X on my phone day one. Haven't experienced any problems.
Thanks guys...An uninstall and reinstall did the trick.

keyboard issue

From time to time, I will notice that when using the keyboard, it will not type out the word I want. It seems to be a bug with this phone. All I am trying to do is text and then I have to resort to finger press each letter just to get a word out.
Anybody else notice this problem? Any solutions on how to fix or is this just a matter of Samsung just sucking?
hey i noticed this too..once in a while it will stop typing and not show anything even tho its typing...doesnt happen a lot but its annoying when it does...so far i just type what i wanna say and hit send hopefully they fix this
