Froyo 2.2 Vanilla - Defy General

Hello everybody... first things first.. I did a search but I didn't find anything around what I'm looking for, so the question is.... is there a Froyo Vanilla ROM for the Defy? I'm looking for one that has everything working, I was able to find this one "(ROM) Vanilla w/ Froyo 1.0 (1/24/11) - Motorola Defy" but that dev is not working on it anymore and the last time that it was updated was January 24th, for what I have read there are some bugs on it, I really like the Defy but I hate Blur, please help...Thank you all!

never heard of vanilla.
i tried 3.4.2_177-005_NORDIC and it worked like a charm for me. If you are not familiar with roms i would recommend this to you.
if you want to try something different, try cyanogenmod from quarx. but be sure, this rom is still a beta.
both roms are blurless

I really like that plain Android look, like the nexus 1 or S, what would you recommend to able to get that?

Here is what Vanilla looks like,
http://www.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FissionHome.png

You can make it vanilla look by modifying framework files

I rather have a rom with no blur, thats what I'm looking for, I'm surprise nobody has made one yet, I know there is a lot of pure android lovers out there and a 2.2 froyo vanilla would be wonderful.

Take a look at Barebones

FYI: Quick search yields "barebones 1.5.1" - No blur
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977989
Also other roms without blur exist using terms like deblur and blurless in their titles and/or descriptions.

[Q] Which Rom is Which?

Hey I have an Incredible, and recently rooted and used the skyrider 2.52 rom. Then Verizon came out with "official froyo" and i downgraded and did the OTA. Well I hate the OTA because it has so many "spam" programs... So i would like to re root.... well there are so many different roms to choose from. Can some one explain the differences between them or the pluses and negatives of them. I like sence, but with froyo the sence isn't as nice as of upgrade above the stock as it was in 2.1. I like the facebook picture to contact integration, but i really don't know if stock has that either. I would just like a rom that is fast, efficient, and not a bunch of extra "b.s." that kills my battery. Any advice or comments are greatly apprieciated.
Thanks you

Vanilla = Ruby or SkyRaider
Sense = Virtuous
I think SkyRaider vanilla still has some sense left (I'm on virtuous atm) but I don't think any ROM Ive listed doesn't have the ability to us FB pics as I think it is part of the facebook app (I could be wrong).
Ruby is VERY fast and the latest version has killed off all the bugs that bothered me, but I kind of missed sense in places and also some of the SkyRaider features.
Virtuous doesn't get as good of Quadrant scores as the other two (for me) but runs REALLY smooth and I took out all the stuff I hated about sense.
All preference, but this should probably go in the Q&A forum. There are a few other posts just like this one (mine included) so you could read opinions already posted.
Try out Virtuous or Redemption. There are some others that are vanilla - no sense - but you have to try them for yourself. Each of the ones I mentioned removed all the bloat.
With regards to battery, look at the battery calibration thread.
First root using unrevoked 3.2
I recommend skyraider vanilla, its fully functional and has all the good stuff from vanilla. The only real things that it has from sense is the keyboard and dialer. Which I think is an improvement until a fully working CM Rom is released.

Thank you for the replies, but i thought there was skyrider, with sence and skyrider vanilla (no sence) I like the sence, that is why i got the incredible instead od droid or droid x. But the new 2.2 is not good. thank you kappo9000 for your post. I used unrevoked 3.2 then used skyrider with sence (pre 3.0) and i liked it better than the new OTA. But I took a "stap in the dark" when i chose that. If this needs to move to a Q&A that is fine. I just downloaded and leard about roms here, so that is where i posted. I wish Verizon didn't bloatware our phones, it's like buying a new computer... pretty soon they will have a option to pay $50 and they will clean our phones before we get them.
Thanks again evberybody i will read this over for a few days then i will pick one. And as for the facebook thing, if i get it on any rom, then SWEET!

Pick up ROM Manager. It's the BEEEEEST way to test all the ROMs. My procedure is to go in and "Backup Current ROM" so I can name it how I like (today I backed up SkyRaider as 0908-SkyRaider3RC2 for instance) then just wipe my data and cache when I install a new one without backing up.
Then I'll play with the new ROM for a while, and, if I like it, I'll back that one up to either install a new ROM or go back to one of my others.
In effect, you can take a snapshot of a ROM/config and roll between all of them to find out which one you like better. You can do that for yours now and play with whatever you like. Be warned : with all the REALLY good ROMs in this forum, you will suck up an entire night or two just playing with them I just wish the guys I work with did such a pro job like they do.
I think there are a few ways to go:
Pure minimalistic AOSP builds - Ruby / IncredibleDoes
More tweakable AOSP builds - CM
Senseless - Redemption, Virtuous (if remove sense apks) and SR Vanilla
Sense- Redemption, Virtuous, SR Sense, Stock
PS Not so sure with Redemption and Virtuous, haven't tried them before.
I personally like the minimal style of Ruby / ID, but it's all about personal preference. These ROMs all are fantastic in their own way, so try them out!
Haha, and yes, I have spent (*ahem. Read: WASTED) entire nights tweaking / trying out just ONE ROM. xD
Anyway, happy ROM-hunting! Do let us know which you pick =]
one problem. Unrevoked 3.2 is gone, and i can't seem to root 2.2 so do i have to downgrade first? and if so what is the best way?
I too am new to this ROM installing business, but so far I think that I'm leaning towards Ruby. Seems light and will be a nice change from what I've been used to.
And about your rooting question kmcrane, it is probably best just to wait for the unrevoked team to finish up with v3.21 instead of going through a rough downgrade process. It probably will not take them too much longer anyway. (their twitter feed said earlier today that they were going to be putting out test builds soon)
OK well i went back to 2.1 rooted and installed.......... Virtuous 2.6! I think it is the closest to stock Incredible froyo that is very complete. I like the screen shots of SkyRaider Sence, but there are updates and bugs with that.. I will keep an eye on that one and maybe use the rom manager to back up, then try that one. I would like to thank everyone who replied on here to help me, and everyone that posted the endless amounts on posts on XDA forums. I have read so many "how to's" and everyone is just great! I wish we could all just go out for a beer sometime! HAHA Thanks all!
I'd recommend SkyRaider Sense any day!.. Sky Raider has put in a lot of effort into making this aesthetically pleasing and stable. With virtuous, you are as good as installing the official ota..
If you want to have the benefit of sense, with a few modifications to sense.. go with skyraider.

I 2nd these choices but haven't tried Ruby. SkyRaider was the first Rom I tried and I've on n have used virtuous the longest so far and love it. I've also tried CM, Frankenrom, and Fourth Wave but it errored on install and the forums say something about upgrading hboot which I won't do so I deleted it.
Good call!

I have v 2.6 now. I see the screen shots of skyraider with sence and it looks cool. Redemption has new 2.0 and it looks like you can add mods to change it up... if i back up my v 2.6 and try a different rom, do i reinstall all my apps? Can i use app brain to help with that? Cause i have 50+ apps. I would like a stock-like rom and maybe one totally different... also what does Vanilla mean? I see sence, stock, and vanilla..... what is the differences and advantages of each?
Thanks guys/gals

Here's what I understand and someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Sense is the ROM with SenseUI code (extra coding that makes the HTC's so neat compared to Moto)
Stock is pretty much just as it was when you bought it. (original ROM installed by manufacturer)
Vanilla is pretty much the Android OS running on a particular phone without the extra coding (like on the Sense)
Many of the ROM's have both a sense and a vanilla version so if you like Sense and it's widgets etc. you can get that one and if you want to customize the most you can get the vanilla.
Virtuous is an awesome ROM. Skyraider has both sense and vanilla avail. Ruby is just vanilla and also Cyanogen if I'm not mistaken.
Hope this helps some!
I upgraded to Virtuous 2.7 and it is cool. I guess with all the modding and roms, i have gotten bit by the customize bug. Virtuous ROM was fine, but pretty much the same as the stock (except a few small things in 2.7) I think i want something different and fresh. Circle Battery looks cool. maybe something where i can customize the bottom buttons (phone, all apps, and add to home) it would be nice to change those. The main thing is i don't want crap unwanted software, (city id, amazon mp3, etc...) Thanks again for all the help and input,
Oh kmcrane, SkyRaider vanilla latest release showed up on ROM manager a few hours ago!
I've been using the new Virtuous 2.7 with the battery saving kernel and really liking it. Basically, it's like a stock froyo with some liposuction and a bit of plastic surgery--crapware all gone, some very nice SmoothSense modifications, and rock solid (no crashes or FCs). With the alternative kernel, you can add SetCPU and customize settings to maximize battery life.

[Q] Possible to flash desire with official Android 2.2 rom (from Google, not HTC)

Hello
Is it possible to download the official Android 2.2 rom, that for example HTC receives, and makes modifications to? I'm not interested in the rom that HTC is pushing out with all it's fancy graphics and functions, just the bare no-nonsense 2.2 Android rom.
If the above is possible, will this actually work in a Desire device, out-of-the-box?
Thanks for reading.
I assume you're looking for a ROM without Sense? OpenDesire and DeFrost are two of the most popular custom ROMs built around stock Android ROMs with the chefs customizations.
Yeah, you might be right - I'm really just looking for the plain old "gray" Android that I saw on the G1 phones. I don't really like all the graphics in the Desire, bloaty. We're going back to basics .
I'll try out one of those, thanks alot.
If you go with DeFrost, Pay, another ROM chef has created a darker theme for the ROM which can be found here. I gave the DeFrost ROM a go today briefly for the first time and it looks much better with the darker theme.
be really careful with ASOP roms if you have an AMOLED Desire, they can cause havoc on them
you can get a darker theme for them to prevent that from happening

[Q] Which ROM?!?! Totally unable to choose...

Hi all,
I'm a newbie of the Androids world. (and also in HTCs one).
I'm coming from the world of Nokia hacking and modding and here, with all the mods changed, I feel a bit (just not to say totally) lost.
I bought this week a new HTC Desire, I feel very happy and proud of my choice, the AMOLED screen is something superlative.
But, coming to my problem:
I discovered that to join the wifi hotspot in my university i need to set the proxy and other stuff which i can do only with root privilege and other apps, so I decided that is just arrived the time to f**k up the guarantee and install a rom one time for all, at the beginning so i must not reinstall many apps, settings and other stuffs.
I'm searching for a ROM which is the most possible similar to the original Sense FroYo that is now installed on the phone. But at the moment for me I think it's to hard to be able to recognize the differences between two ROMs, so...
Which is better for me to choose in the huge list of post #1 of the "Desire Index - Everything is here" thread?
Obviously it must have the root capabilities, ap2sd and..? (i'm totally ignorant in which are the starter-important mod)
thx for you help and sorry for my poor english..

LeeDroid! But I'm biased, been using it a couple of months and it rocks, full Sense ROM, A2SD+ (need an ext partition on your SD card for this), themeable, overclockable if you want. I've tried other but nothing has persuaded me to switch.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
this one is all stock but for the root access, but if you root, why just go for the same as you got?
Invest a few bucks in titanium backup or mybackup pro and rom manager and try some of the top roms like AuraxTSense, LeeDroid, both with Sense as you know it, or Miui and OpenDesire which run alternative launchers.
There is never just flash one rom and be happy once you have set yor foot in here
By far the greatest of all is LeeDorid.Lots of good features and a lot of updates !
Modaco Custom ROM
Should be as good as Leedroid or even better in my opinion ;-)

MIUI 10.0.29 is honest to god stunning, its fast, overclockable, excellent batterylife and the whole UI is a nice overhaul. Its clean and everything has been designed for use, the system menu has been re-organized for the better making it easier and clearer to get to all options. They have also done things like add settings to the notification panel, added kintetic scrolling (so things bounce) FM radio re-skinned all major apps. The lockscreen has also been changed to a custom lockscreen which has quick access to phone and messaging, barring that i'd suggest trying DeFrost, he does good builds of CyanogenMod, or Cyanogen Mod 6.1 rc1. Not a huge fan of CM6, its seems as slow as sense roms on my phone. OD and DeFrost dont seem to suffer this issue however.
Mr favourite non-Miui rom is OpenDesire, theyr quick and dont come with bloatware r crap pre-installed, but Adam_g has been absent lately.
For 'sense' builds try leeDroid (imo bloated with tonnes of crap), Modaco Custom Rom (www.desire.modaco.com) or Alex-V sense rom. Theres also AuraxTSense but its hideous. Imo for a good sense rom try a modaco rom with a sense kernel such as vorkKernel, or 'HAVS 2.6.32 for Sense Roms V5' by richardtrip

CyanogenMOD is one of the fastest ROM and the one with the most fixes and updates! Dont say bad things about CyanogenMOD RomĀ“s !! Without him this Community would be nothing!
Sense or AOSP? Minimalist or Feature-Packed? Depends on your personal needs...
You could start with a rooted stock, after a week try Leedroid/RCmixHD/MIUI and next week CM6.
Or you just get DSIXDA's Kitchen, learn some ADB and Shell Stuff and make your own ROM.
Go for cyanogen to get the best android experience...
This post might fit better in the Desire Q and A and not the Development section mate
this is not a post for the development section, in future please reasd the forum rules before posting
I've tried Leedroid (SENSE) and DeFrost (NON-SENSE).
Both are really good but after some experience I've decided to stick with non sense ROMs. They are by far faster but that eventually comes at the price of some higher battery drain.
DeFrost FTW !
You must be thinking, i'll find the best and most popular one and i wont be flashing again in the next few months/weeks. You're wrong. You come here, you'll be flashing all roms as the clocks ticking.
I have tried all except MIUI and Defrost so far. and am sticking on OpenDesire for the longest AOSP rom and Modaco R8 for the sense ROM.
But my personal choice;
CyanogenMod : Be it Nightly, stable or RC, i love it to the core! Best AOSP rom ever. I tried them all and they are super fast! The reason i didnt use it currently because i waited for the stable 6.1. Hehe~~ Love the nightlies before RC1 got released though.
OpenDesire : The dev(AdamG) used to have minor updates almost everyday but now, very2 long time before an update, meaning it is at the most stable version now. and it is true cuz i didnt believe it at first( I used to use the older versions and it still have some bugs) but now it is the best for me. Best after CM(cant deny CM, they are the master here).
LeeDroid : Well i've tried all Sense roms already, and this seems the most stable and fast(though i found out it become slower over time, my fault for installing so many apps maybe). I used to love NeXTSense by Neo, but when it got changed to AuraxtSense, i jumped to Lee.
I'm sorry for posting in the wrong section, but i wasn't sure where to post in the different areas.
Well, you named different roms, but which are the differences (explained to a nearly-noob)?
I'm searching for something with the same interface of the normale roms, but purified from all the (in)utilities. In fact a clean and fast rom, in which THEN i decide what i like to install and personalize...
If I can make a representation, a roms with no apps which are not native (facebook, twitter, opera and all the others), but with only the things that you nedd as a basis for all the rest.
Lol the op will still have a hard time deciding. XD
The best way for you to choose which Rom to use is to download and test each one individually. Hope you get ORD btw

I'd like to test them all, but at the moment i'm under exams and for next 5 weeks don't have enough time to test anything.
so I was searching for a direct suggestion explaining what will change and what will not change..
If you want a rooted rom similar to your current one, why don't you just use unrevoked to root your current rom?

MIUI! or Defrost!
If you want speed, then go for Cyanogenmod 6.1, DeFroST or OpenDesire. If you want a nice UI, too, you have to put a theme on it or use a Rom like RCMixHD, AuraxTSense or smth. like that.
a-ehm...are there ROMs that haven't been named yet? LOL

easy, test it while you go. thats what i did.
Here's my timeline(some are examples);
I'm meeting my girlfriend tomorrow, lets bring LeeDroid! and yeah i did it, i manage to test all features and stability while I'm in the bus travelling from my place to her(took 8 hours in the bus). i screwed up while playing around though, the phone didnt boot so i had to restore nandroid of my modaco R8 back...haha~~
This weekend is examination time(yeah seriously no joke), so last week i flashed OpenDesire. Now i'm still using it. done exploring it in a day though, and keeping it longer than i imagined since i love it.
Presentation week, damn it this week was very busy and i tried Cyanogenmod Nightly 149. Love it. but no themes for it so i flashes CM 6.0.2...but aah too many gallery crash for me so i'm back to OpenDesire.
Well those are my moments, you'll be done exploring in 2 days at max for a rom though. Be sure to test all primary function first before you begin to like them. I did all in a day only. shouldnt be too hard.

Gingerbread sense is out - who will be the first to port it to our devices?

The version for HUASHAN (HD2ish Chines phone from what I briefly read...) is out and I came across a thread where you can actually download the dump files...
Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955919
I'm really wondering when the first modded ROM will be available for our beloved Desire
Right now I can't decide whether to use a Froyo Sense ROM or a Minimal AOSP Gingerbread one... This would be the ROM that would make it a lot easier for me. I lev how Gingerbread is behaving (Right now using redux). It's darn quick.
A video about the new sense and its features. Not a big deal but gingerbread beneath it would be a big deal...
http://phandroid.com/2011/02/15/htc-sense-2-1-gingerbread-overview-video/
Hopefully someone is or will be working on this.
Already had a look at the file and although some HTC apps are there there are no widgets so don't know how complete it is. It's a test build so likely to be buggy anyway
Plus this is already in a thread in General

Thats really good information. But how do i know weather I am running AOSP or SENSE? Like I said I have the OTA Unofficial 2.2 Froyo Update, and I know AOSP means it started from scratch but I dont know wether the Rom i installed is, how can I figure this out through the phone or can you just tell me
It sounds like you're on a sense rom. Sense is HTC's skin for android, it adds certain functionalities and features (primarily social networking). If you have HTC apps (check settings>applications>manage applications) then you're using a sense rom. Do you have HTC sense widgets available to add to your screens? Then it's sense.
Chad has an incredikernel for froyo (android 2.2) sense roms, it should be near the bottom office the OP of his incredikernel thread. If you want to use his latest kernels, they are only for AOSP gingerbread (android 2.3) roms. AOSP roms for the incredible include cyanogenmod, MIUI, OMGB & OMFGB, IncDeck, evervolv, and liquid light.
I suppose you could say AOSP (android open source project) roms are built from scratch, but it might be more accurate to say built from source, the source being Google's. Just about every phone is shipped with the manufacturer's "version" of android on it, sense for HTC, blur for Motorola, touchwiz for Samsung. Only Google's nexus devices ship with the unmolested "stock" version of android, and that's why they are always the first to receive updates. Hopefully this info helps!

Alright can you help me locate a Rom of my liking?
I really like the Stock rom, but I want a AOSP Rom. I basically just want it to have the Stock HTC Launcher but I dont want it to be so slow for instance, for me Skyraider 4.2 is slow because it takes five times the length of time for it to Boot Up then using the Stock 2.2 unofficial OTA.
Is Binny Rom a AOSP rom? And I dont want to lose the 8MP camera or 720p HD Recordings.
Well, if you need 720P, there aren't any AOSP gingerbread roms that will work. Also, if you want the HTC launcher, you'll need to be on a sense rom, there's no way to use it on AOSP.
That said, what are you looking for in a rom? Skyraider is a very solid rom, and will be very similar in functionality and stability to the stock rom. I don't know why it would take so much longer to boot, are you using the stock skyaider kernel or another one?
Let me know what features you have to have in a rom and we'll figure it out. Unless you read through all the rom threads (like I do for some reason), it can be hard to tell what the feature and especially functionality differences are.

I used the stock kernel for sky raider. I believe Sky Raiders is a sense rom isn't it?
And basically I want something that is stable with no foreclosures. With the stock rom I have never had a foreclose. Something that i can customize the look of easily I loved sky raider for that but then i want to a AOSP rom to have the liberty of messing around with my phone better. I really don't mind the hd recording I just want to keep my 8mp camera.
Also can't I install a launcher from the market to give me stock looks?
If u tell me sky raider is also then i will keep that one

You're right, you can install a launcher from the market and should be able to find a sense-like theme for it if you want. I'd recommend making a backup of your current rom, then flash the latest cyanogenmod nightly. The nightlies have some newer features that the "stable" releases don't have, and they're just as stable, if not moreso. With CM7, you have a TON of options for themes and modifications, and its always been perfectly stable for me. Look around in the android themes section and search "CM7 theme" on the market to get an idea of all the ways it can be customized.
With CM7, you won't have 720p video recording, but the still camera can be used at full resolution. There are an unbelievable amount of features and tweaks that CM7 adds, I'd recommend looking through the wiki on their website and browsing the threads in the development section. If you don't like it, you can always restore your backup. It might be fun to check out some of the new gingerbread sense roms too, if you like the sense interface. Those roms aren't as stable or fast as CM7, or froyo sense roms (like skyraider), but can be fun to mess around with.
