(Q) UOT Kitchen - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK I've been trying to make some themes with the uot kitchen I've got it to work right once I know how and what files to upload but the past few times I've done this it doesn't seem to work right for me this is what I do .
I pick the battery icon I want.
Then pick the icons I want.
Then the fonts.
I upload the file framework res apk for a froyo ROM.
Then submit my work and then download the uot zip.
When I flash it from ra recovery I first wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash the zip.
But when it boots sometimes I only have the battery icon and the fonts and sometimes I can see all the icons for a second when the phone starts then they go right back to the original look and I still end up with just the battery and the fonts .
Now I use the file from the ROM I'm trying to theme anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong any help would be awesome thanks in advanced for any help and just reading all this LOL.

Install UOT kitchen icons

I tried to install icons (emoticons & status bar) from the UOT kitchen, but it didn't work. I've got GingerVillain 2.5 and I'm S-off. I tried a few things
e.g. copy the SystemUI and framework-res apks per adb on the phone, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=862230,...
Could it be that the rom is not deodexed and the problem exists because of that. (Glowing, Battery icons,... work)
What can I do to be able to install the icons (Do I have to change the rom - I don't want to )
http://uot.dakra.lt
Thx. Yes I used the kitchen. Everything worked except the icons.

The emoticons?
Yes the emoticons and status bar icon (received sms). Everything else worked (battery icon, glowing,...)

Wipe first dalvik cache, then cache and then flash cooked zip file again.
Tried it twice, but it didn't work unfortunately.
I think that this rom doesn't support these icons.
Depends where the emoticons are stored. If the files arn't being overwritten by the UOT files, then obviously it won't work. You should manually replace them.
Yes I think I'll ask in the developers thread where these emoticons are stored or if it's not possible to change them.

Imho this is not a question for the developers subforum, it belongs to this subforum.

They're in the framework-res.apk file. More specifically in that file /res/drawable-hdpi. Just scroll down until you find them. You can just use an archiving program to open the apk.
OK I'll try it again. I copied the framework-res.apk to my phone, but it didn't work.
Link me your UOT zip file.
OK just the icons. I uploaded the SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk to the kitchen to cook that file .
https://rapidshare.com/files/3103597030/UOT-06-12-11-04-2.zip
Edit: Tried it again to push the edited framework-res.apk to the phone. There was the original wallpaper after the reboot, but the emoticons are still the same.
Nvm, the icons are in the pack. Did you wipe your cache/dalvik?
Yes I tried it a few times. I also rebooted the recovery and wiped the caches again and nothing changed. It only changed the background (to the stock one) when I copied the files per adb. The zip changed nothing (only the battery icon,...)
TY for your help, but I think that this rom doesn't support these icons.

Deleted status/notification bar?

Somehow I deleted my status/notification bar.
Background: I used uot kitchen, using system and framework files to create a theme. I modded the lockscreen. (I didn't make a backup). I ended up hating the lockscreen so I tried to install the system and framework apks from a stock system theme using root explorer. I rebooted, stock on boot loading screen for over an hour so I pulled the battery. I used a backup zipped theme and got my phone in a usable state but I don't have a status bar...
Does anyone know how I can get it back?
Any tips or obvious mistakes I made?
Thanks in advance!

No backup?
Do you a nandroid backup? it's easy to get back to normal, then fix your theme.

Get the correct 3 files from the zip you used to install your rom and use them in uot kitchen then flash that. Or push the 3 files to your phone thru adb. Or you could just reinstall your rom.

Why not go to the UOT Kitchen and make one up yourself. They have a number of battery styles so one should do the trick.
It's not difficult to do for a simple battery change. Just extract framework.apk and systemUI.apk from your Rom, go to the site, press the kitchen tab, then battery. Check "use this mod", pick the battery style you want. If that's all you want to do next click on "file upload" tab, upload the two .apks then press the "summary" tab, then the submit button. Click on the pickup page and a few minutes later you'll have a UOT apk. Just go into recovery, clear your caches and flash.
Not hard to do, and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and learning the 1st steps of theming.

[help] problems changing status bar notification icons

Hello XDA,
I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to change the status bar notification icon for a new sms from the standard Samsung closed envelope icon to the stock AOSP ICS square smiley face with the little tail. I have already got the icon and it is the correct size and file type (.png) and name (stat_notify_message.png) and I have tried a few ways of adding it into Mms.apk such as simply using 7Zip and decompiling & recompiling numerous times but the end result is always that the Messaging app is being removed completely and I'm having to restore a nandroid backup to get it back.
I have been looking all over XDA and have used trusty old Google to find solutions to my problem. Both come up with lots of different ways to theme, but none that solve my problem (as far as I can see anyway). Could anyone please point me in the right direction to find the guide on how to do it/explain to me how to do it successfully?
I am on a stock odexed XWLPG rom which is rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If I remember correctly, its in SystemUI.apk

Really? Any idea what the file is called and where it is? I have gone through all of the drawable folders in SystemUI.apk and there is not one in there. The only place I could find it was in Mms.apk and it was called stat_notify_message.png

What I have done in the past is put the mms.apk on your pc. Use 7zip to OPEN ARCHIVE (NOT EXTRACT), then put the NEW .png file with the correct name on your pc. Now without unzipping the mms.apk just use 7zip to find the location of the file you want to replace. Now just hold down on the new .png file and drag it into the corrext location. Then 7zip will ask if you are sure you want to replace it. Hit ok or yes or whatever it says. Now move the mms.apk back onto your phone. Use root explorer and move it to /system. Then long press on it and choose permissions. Change it to rw,r,r. Then long press again and select MOVE. Then navigate to /system/app and paste. Reboot phone. It will work.
For some .apk they are picky like mms.apk dont like being extracted and zipped back up for some reason while others have NO issues when you extract them and rezip and rename then place them in.

Is that "stat_notify_email_generic.png" in the .apk, res, drawable-hdpi, by any chance?
Although, I think RockRatt may be on the ball. He posted while I was writing this.
:silly: me, too slow...

If you copy the drawable-hdpi folder somewhere outside the zip, look at the 'stat_notify_blahblah.png' then you can see what ones you want to change over

Thank you so much RockRatt, you have solved my problem. Words cannot express my relief, thanks & gratitude for your sound advice. I had tried what you said to do previously, but never with the permission changes. Is that something that needs to be done for every apk or just some? Thanks once again, I am so happy! What an easy was to change the icon. It looks great. See screenshots.
So anyone out there in XDA land that is looking for a quick, easy mod (provided you're rooted) then simply follow RockRatt's easy to follow guide and you will never go wrong. And give him a thanks if his guide helped you in any way!!

What's the mod and how is it installed? Does it have to be flashed by CWM? A little more info on the problem would probably help.

You can clear the cache & dalvik-cache either before or after flashing the battery mod. I'd probably try it before and see how you go.
You know how to clear the dalvik-cache, yes??
I think the problem with the VK battery files is they are from a pre jkay release. Now the Rom is using jkay framework I don't think you can flash them. It could be possible to swap the icons like the OP did though using 7zip?

How to change battery icon?

I've been trying to figure out how to change the battery icon and get it to stick. I tried earlier with rom tool box and it installed it and it was there for a minute or 2 before it was replaced with the one before I don't know how that happened. Every once in a while i see the new one flash up there but that's it. How can I get the icons I install through rom toolbox to stick or how do I make a zip file able to flash them through recovery? Thanks!!
Have you tried using Morphology? Users have reported it has worked for ma7 odex roms.
Edit:
Here is the link to Morphology...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096547
One way would be to flash "mack's updater" first. You can find a link to if in the themes section under Morphology 1.5 thread. It tweaks your system ui and gives you the center clock mod as well as a round battery with the 1% increments. Then the battery mod from rom toolbox should work. But it's not perfect, so make sure you make a back-up first. If that doesn't work you'll have to manually transfer the png files into the system ui recompile it and install it.
I used those apps too download battery changer from play store but it sucks whenever I close the app the battery changes.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium HD app
Or... In the mods section, I have a writeup how you can mod your own SystemUI.apk file and add whatever icons you want AND the 1% battery display instead of the default 10% countdown.
