Deleted status/notification bar? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Somehow I deleted my status/notification bar.
Background: I used uot kitchen, using system and framework files to create a theme. I modded the lockscreen. (I didn't make a backup). I ended up hating the lockscreen so I tried to install the system and framework apks from a stock system theme using root explorer. I rebooted, stock on boot loading screen for over an hour so I pulled the battery. I used a backup zipped theme and got my phone in a usable state but I don't have a status bar...
Does anyone know how I can get it back?
Any tips or obvious mistakes I made?
Thanks in advance!

No backup?
Do you a nandroid backup? it's easy to get back to normal, then fix your theme.

Get the correct 3 files from the zip you used to install your rom and use them in uot kitchen then flash that. Or push the 3 files to your phone thru adb. Or you could just reinstall your rom.

[Q] modding framework-res.apk

Okay, I have a g2 currently running gingerbread 1.5. I was just wondering if it's safe to totally mod framework-res.apk with apk manager without running into any problems. New phone so I really don't want to go through simultaneous trial and error. The reason for modding the framework is because I really want to change the lockscreen sliders. I tried widgetlocker and it sucks, everytime I open the g2 in landscape, widgetlocker force closes.

i all ways boot into recovery then preform a nandroid.
And yes it backs up you whole system, so if something goes wrong you can restore to a point where everything worked.

I'm not sure how to change the lock screen sliders from within the framework-res. HAve you tried using Widget Locker there is a huge thread about how to customise your lockscreen

yeah, i've tried widgetlocker. everytime i open my g2 in landscape widgetlocker forcecloses. I have to do that everytime widgetlocker is enabled, really started to get annoying, thats why i wanted to just edit the framework.

Gingerbread Dialer

Is there a way to get this onto the Epic. I love the look of the all black dialer. Its sooo sexy but I cant find it anywhere. Is this possible?
If you want it that badly flash the gingerbread theme, otherwise no, the dialer . apk is too deep in the framework to change other than skins.
Yea...I've tried two themes and I cant get them to work at all for me. I flash them in Clockwork after doing the wipes indicated (cache 3x's, dalvic 3x's) and I even throw in a hard reset but when booting the phone back up I get a million fc's and then bootloops. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm on a deodexed EB13 ROM with the Genocide OC'd kernal and the Vanilla lockscreen if any of that makes a difference.
The themes by Mysteryemotionz have the dialer your looking for. For those fc's I would just relash the theme. You are using themes specifically made for EB13, correct?

Personally, this is what I'd try (we're on a tangent!)
Open up a (compatible) theme you want to flash, with 7zip. Open the system/app folder, and delete all of the apks .. you can keep the folder.
delete any apps in /data/app , if there are any apks in there.
You should basically be left with the META-INF folder (don't touch that)
and the /system/framework/* stuff
So all you will be flashing is the contents of /system/framework/framework-res.apk and the twframework-res.apk
If this flashes, then it means you had some kind of problem with one of the 'themed' apps included in the theme. The basic themed UI elements are mostly contained in the framework and twframework apks anyway. But that's what I'd try first.
i love the stock dialer, it is so super cool. i dont get why you want to change.

Yes sir. They all state EB13 compatibility. I've tried reflashing a few times.

I'll try this. All I really care about is the dialer. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
yeah.. i tried putting that dialer in, kept crashing.
Best bet is just a full blow out gingerbread mod.
Didn't work for me. None of the themes are working in my favor. Darn it.
I've tried wiping everything then reflashing with no luck. All the themes are said to work with EB13 as well.
Damnit. Guess I won't be getting it lol
Have u tried full wipe, flash rom (don't restore data), then flash theme?

Ya, if u really want to get to the bottom of it, i would try flashing the theme on top of the clean rom, without any of your data. If it works, then you know that something in your 'data' is causing your probs.
At that point, you could explore alternatives like restoring from a titanium or mybackup backup.

Changing status bar icons

Just wondering if anybody's rooted but running stock Rom still can answer a question
Can I change my status bar icons even though I'm running stock Rom? I'm rooted and have Rom toolbox pro (which let's you change icons) but I don't want to try and change them if it's going to mess something up.
Thanks in advance

You should be able to. As far as I remember, icons are in Framework.apk and SystemUI.apk. You need a tool to unpack, replace icons, put it all back and move to phone into System/apk folder (as far as I remember)

Or he can upload the files to UOT kitchen and choose one of the many options in there. Then simply flash the returning zip file and reboot.
it doesn't work using rom toolbox pro, it tells me the icons installed successfully but it doesn't actually change them.
going to have a look at the uot kitchen but ive never used it before so heres hoping its not too complicated

How can I add softkeys WITHOUT using a rom? (only rooted nothing else)

I want to be 100% stock but still add a search and menu softkeys to my navigation bar. I don't want to have to flash a rom. Most of the softkey threads I looked through assume you are already on a rom and I am not.

If you modify your system files, you are no longer 100% stock. OTA updates will not apply correctly in the future, FYI.
To modify your softkeys you need to modify your systemui.apk. The process shouldn't be much different than doing it on a rom.
Extract the files using root explorer, replace them, then repackage them.

The softkey .png files are in this location:
/system/app/SystemUI/res/drawable-xhdpi
You should then be able to push using adb.
But yeah, as others have said, don't do it if you want to remain 100% stock.
Use the vrtheme system. It will modify just the images, and backup whatever it modifies.
I did this on stock before. Just pull the systemUI from a rom that has what you want and flash it to your phone. You're good to go and still stock rom.
Wow, some funny responses here.
Well first off to add search and menu keys will require more than just adding images to systemUI. It will also need to have the additions of the commands added to xml and java files within systemUI.
And I would also NOT recommend just yanking a systemUI.apk from any old rom and pushing it to your device while running a stock rom with odex files.
Grow some balls and flash a rom and enjoy.
good day.

[help] problems changing status bar notification icons

Hello XDA,
I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to change the status bar notification icon for a new sms from the standard Samsung closed envelope icon to the stock AOSP ICS square smiley face with the little tail. I have already got the icon and it is the correct size and file type (.png) and name (stat_notify_message.png) and I have tried a few ways of adding it into Mms.apk such as simply using 7Zip and decompiling & recompiling numerous times but the end result is always that the Messaging app is being removed completely and I'm having to restore a nandroid backup to get it back.
I have been looking all over XDA and have used trusty old Google to find solutions to my problem. Both come up with lots of different ways to theme, but none that solve my problem (as far as I can see anyway). Could anyone please point me in the right direction to find the guide on how to do it/explain to me how to do it successfully?
I am on a stock odexed XWLPG rom which is rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If I remember correctly, its in SystemUI.apk

Really? Any idea what the file is called and where it is? I have gone through all of the drawable folders in SystemUI.apk and there is not one in there. The only place I could find it was in Mms.apk and it was called stat_notify_message.png

What I have done in the past is put the mms.apk on your pc. Use 7zip to OPEN ARCHIVE (NOT EXTRACT), then put the NEW .png file with the correct name on your pc. Now without unzipping the mms.apk just use 7zip to find the location of the file you want to replace. Now just hold down on the new .png file and drag it into the corrext location. Then 7zip will ask if you are sure you want to replace it. Hit ok or yes or whatever it says. Now move the mms.apk back onto your phone. Use root explorer and move it to /system. Then long press on it and choose permissions. Change it to rw,r,r. Then long press again and select MOVE. Then navigate to /system/app and paste. Reboot phone. It will work.
For some .apk they are picky like mms.apk dont like being extracted and zipped back up for some reason while others have NO issues when you extract them and rezip and rename then place them in.

Is that "stat_notify_email_generic.png" in the .apk, res, drawable-hdpi, by any chance?
Although, I think RockRatt may be on the ball. He posted while I was writing this.

If you copy the drawable-hdpi folder somewhere outside the zip, look at the 'stat_notify_blahblah.png' then you can see what ones you want to change over

Thank you so much RockRatt, you have solved my problem. Words cannot express my relief, thanks & gratitude for your sound advice. I had tried what you said to do previously, but never with the permission changes. Is that something that needs to be done for every apk or just some? Thanks once again, I am so happy! What an easy was to change the icon. It looks great. See screenshots.
So anyone out there in XDA land that is looking for a quick, easy mod (provided you're rooted) then simply follow RockRatt's easy to follow guide and you will never go wrong. And give him a thanks if his guide helped you in any way!!

You can clear the cache & dalvik-cache either before or after flashing the battery mod. I'd probably try it before and see how you go.
You know how to clear the dalvik-cache, yes??
I think the problem with the VK battery files is they are from a pre jkay release. Now the Rom is using jkay framework I don't think you can flash them. It could be possible to swap the icons like the OP did though using 7zip?
