Hey,
My and my wife's Epics are having issues seemingly with the SD card. Latest Froyo stock, rooted for both phones.
The issue presents itself in 3 places:
-A "format not supported" or something like that in music player whenever I try to play any music (regular MP3, no DRM issues)
-An "unable to record video" message in the stock video recorder
-Ringtones stored on the SD card not playing.
These issues are all temporarily solved by unmounting and re-mounting the SD card, but reappear randomly (even without rebooting)
Is this a known issue with a known solution? I've been lurking General and dev and did a quick search and have yet to see anybody reporting this issue.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Most of these issues usually get resolved by backing up your sd card to a computer then formatting it in the phone then restore everything.
Do you BONSAI?

Just a couple things, and then hopefully I, or another member will be able to help you:
1. Don't use words like "latest". Be specific. Either now, or later, that description may or will be inaccurate. What version of Froyo are you using listed under Settings>About Phone.
2. What are you rooted by? Was it a one click? An Odin flash? And what version of CWM?
There are no "known" regular issues with sd cards that I am aware of, and the fact that you have the same issue with both of your Epics says to me that this is a direct result of something you have changed on both. The odds are stacked against a hardware issue, which is a good thing.
Sorry for the lack of specifics.
My phone is ec05, one click root.
I've odin'd my phone back from a DK28 (the later of the two DK builds, apologies if 24 is the wrong #) build, and have used titanium to restore apps & data from that.
Actually, after thinking about it I was incorrect.
My wife's phone is still on DK28 and I have not Odin'd or restored via Titanium for her, though I have installed and backed up her apps.

Well it may be a bit of effort, but try a totally clean start. Follow kennys directions to format your sd card. Then odin the pre-rooted cwm in my signature.
-Sent from my custom Epic.
I have unfortunately not had time to try either of these suggestions (will as soon as i am able,as they are a bit time intensive), but I thought I would add that my two friends who got the epic recently (a month or so ago) and are running clean ec05
also are experiencing the same issue...

I've been experiencing similar issues on my stock Froyo Epic, resolving this is actually what brought me to this community to find a new ROM or other solution.
What's happening, in my experience, is that the device periodically loses the ability to stream audio and video. Anything that does streaming -- either over the air or off memory -- stops working. This includes MP3 and video playback, MP3 ring tones (but not the built-in ones interestingly), YouTube, Pandora, etc. This doesn't seem to be specifically related to the SD card.
In the short term, rebooting your phone will probably fix it for a short time.
In the long term...? I'm not sure yet. I can tell you this... on Monday I rooted my phone, backed it up in CW, did a factory reset, and then restored it in CW. Since then, the issue has not reoccurred, which is unusual as it used to be a daily problem.
So, what I did might be worth a shot even though I can't tell you what it actually changed internally.
(Incidentally this issue isn't exclusive to the Epic -- searching on the error messages led me to some HTC Froyo users complaining about the same thing.)
Following up on this... the issues are still occurring a couple days post-reset and restore. I wonder if some temp cache is filling up or something. Anyways my next fix attempt is to try a custom ROM.

Similar Problems
I've been having some similar issues. I was running pretty much stock for a while, I just had used odin and the samsung update to upgrade to Froyo when it came out. Didn't really have any issues for awhile til a few weeks ago the sound stopped working for all apps.
I rooted it the other day and the problem seemed to be solved. Then after running into some problems while trying to flash roms, I had to run the samsung update through odin to save the phone. Rooted it again since then and no sound problems, but now all of the apps that are on the sd card aren't showing up in the app list sometimes.
If they are on my home screens, their icon isn't showing but the app will still open. After messing with it for a little bit or rebooting and stuff, they come back into the app list and icons come back and everything. Can't figure it out yet... After going through everything with reflashing the stock rom and rerooting and everything, I'm hesitant to flash a new rom right now and spend more time on it. Maybe it's a problem with my SD card? It's the same one it came with and I never did anything with it.
I am running the stock EC05 firmware, rooted with One Click Root, and a Lexar 32GB class 10 memory card. I did not have this issue before this started to happen. I too have been experiencing these issues for the past couple weeks and I can not find a solution to this problem. I have formatted my memory card, reinstalled applications, etc. and still having these issues. Another problem is that applications will not install or delete which led to investigate further and found that my ".android_secure" folder on my SD card keeps corrupting. This is where android stores the info/apps that are installed to the SD card. it keeps corrupting and all the info keeps deleting itself so apps that have been installed to the memory card are not showing up. Luckly I made a backup of my SD card before it got corrupted and I copy over the ".android_secure" folder and my apps appear again, but that does not last long as within the same day or two the folder gets corrupted again.

After painfully occupying my entire weekend getting my Incredible Rooted, the ONLY thing I did was add the WiFi Tether. That was my sole purpose in Rooting.
I did not remove anything. I did not change anything. ONLY loaded the WiFi tether.
Now, I have issues with my phone randomly rebooting.
My phone will show signal but fail to place or receive calls. "Call Failed"
Sometimes when a call comes in, the other side can hear me but I cannot hear them.
My internet connection is sketchy now, facebook photo uploads show success but are blank (red X box) when I or anyone tries to view them.
The Kingston 8GB MicroSD card I originally had in was blown an hour after rooting rendering it not even recognizable in any system (losing a ton of data which is fortunately backed up). Thank goodness for their lifetime warranty.
Finally, I have had to reboot the phone several times due to lock ups.
I did not have a single one of these issues before. WiFi Tether is handy but not worth it if this is the result.
Anyone else having issues Post-Root?

I have had a couple of slow downs and random reboots, but I chalked it up to setCPU and the fact that I have 200 applications installed, some of them old, with about 25 resident processes.
However, the phone is still 10x more reliable than my G1 was with the most reliable modded firmware and fewer programs. When I cross the bone stock/modded line, I know I'm on my own and stability losses aren't my biggest concerns.
Long story short, I have no answers for you, but without scrutinizing the su, busybox, symlink commands for sources of instability, I would venture that Wireless Tether is a prerelease, and earlier versions of it caused my G1 problems too!

Thanks, I may just end up removing it to see if it resolves my issues. Most have to do with my wireless radio so that makes sense. I didn't correlate the application to the hardware-like issues so I'll be mindful of that now.
Thanks for your 2 cents, it has earned interest.
i have noticed that my ringtone skips. when i listen to it in the settings, it sounds fine. but when someone calls, it sounds awful!!!!
Only issue I am having is with wifi, I have to manually go into settings and scan, after that it works fine.

I've had some black screens and phone freezes since root. I do have wi-fi tether and root explorer loaded.... but haven't used wi-fi tether
I've had 0 problems - dunno what you guys did wrong. I added superuser, wifi tethering, shootme, titanium backup, and lamppu, and like I said I haven't had a single problem.
I'm good...Haven't had any problems after root.....Except for the fact I can't get it back to recovery mode to make some more changes!!
I have not had Any issues after root. I installed WiFi tether and its working great, but I didn't change anything else. No slow downs, random restart, lockups, or anything of that nature. No negative impact at all. Did I just get lucky??

I was having rebooting and freezing up issues before root. Replaced the Sense launcher with Helix 2 and problems disappeared.
Been rooted for several days now with fairly heavy usage, and the phone has been VERY stable...
No new issues for me
Has always rebooted randomly about once a week but no worse, and use wifitether almost constantly.

if you want to know why it is rebooting, run logcat and wait for it to reboot. You will see what actually crashed in the log. If you don't want to troubleshoot then just use the ruu to put your phone back to stock. It will erase everything and you will have to root again, but it will fix your phone.
I had a random reboot this morning...dont really attribute it to root though because phone would occassionally do this anyways when signal is shaky. If it persists, I will check logcat and see whats the dealio. Other than that, so far loving having root with no problems, ready for the custom ROMS.
Oh I tried the Stericson busybox installer and get failed message. Installed upgraded busybox through titanium backup.
Suggestion
Not that anyone would really read down this far BUT if you are experiencing problems can you also please make sure to include ONE thing in your post:
DID YOU REMOVE ANYTHING?
I am guessing from the thread that people who didn't remove things aren't experiencing problems.
I haven't had any of the problems you've experienced let alone even heard of other people experiencing this. I'm almost certain you messed something up during the root process. Re-root the phone by following the 10 minute instruction video posted here on how to root and everything should be fine.

Wonder how many would run that OTA right away...
I'm curious if others are seeing their EVO reboot with random use. It doesn't seem to be related to one specific application although it is hard to say if a background app is the cause. I will be using navigation or an Internet-based app, then the screen goes black and the phone reboots.
I originally thought it was due to rooting, but I'm seeing it on different ROMs. I've wiped the cache and data when flashing the new ROMs and I've tried running with limited apps loaded with my recent move to the OMJ ROM. Everything actually runs great with the exception of the reboots.
I'm posting the issue here since it doesn't seem to be ROM specific and I'm curious if it may be hardware related. Is there a tool that would allow me to easily catch a log of the potential error to seek further help? A point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I'm running stock 2.2 no root, and with gps on my phone reboots in the middle of 911 calls. (Thank God I wasn't calling about an immediate emergency) but it happened twice, once when I called and the other when they called me back. After turning off GPS, it worked fine. I thought this was a bug in 2.1 before update1, I didn't receive the problem until the 2.2 update.
adb logcat might see an error, but I'm not really sure.
Seeing it here. Not Rom or application specific.
try a factory reset.
That's scary news about the reboots during 911 calls. I can't say that I tested that as a trigger for the reboot and I hope I don't have to in the near future. However, it makes me curious if it is related to the phone's interaction with the Sprint network. In your case your 911 call may have been a direct trigger whereas my reboots are seem indirect while I'm using my data plan.
One reason for my reboot was due to me getting the Error Code 67 "Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect" when trying to tether (USB or hotspot). Rooting allowed me to tether using 3rd party apps, but there may be the underlying problem with my account.
I also should have mentioned that the reboots happen with GPS on as well as off. I typically have it off to save battery life. I've also done factory resets each time I've changed or updated my ROM.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions so far. I'll try logcat and continue to monitor the forum for advice. I'll also post back any answers I may find elsewhere.
Thanks again.
I had a reboot tonite, phone was just sitting on table off charger about 90% battery, and I heard the Sprint screen come on looked down and noticed phone was booting up....no idea why first time I've noticed this.

Correction... I meant to say that the reason I rooted (not rebooted) was to get tethering without running into the Error Code 67. I tried the various solutions posted for the Error Code 67, but nothing seemed to work. But I'm curious if this may be part of the underlying issue if my device reboots based on a faulty account configuration when using some aspect of the Sprint network.

The exact same thing happened to me last night. I sent a text, switched to my GMail and then boom. Error message about failure to send an SMS then reboot. Stock unrooted FroYo.
I had reboots only when using Undervolted kernels.
Seemed to be triggered by GPS + Phone call.
Yes, I was also having this problem. Definitely GPS related. Usually it would happen only if I was using the GPS for a long amount of time (navigating) - so I imagine it may be conflicting with cellular data if I received a txt while navigating or something. Who knows.
It was driving me crazy because A. I got lost and B. It started rebooting constantly and would randomly get caught in a boot-loop. I even had the problem after wiping EVERYTHING (even my SD) and reinstalling various ROMs (I tried 5 different ones).
The only solution I found in the end was to find the latest radio and wimax updates, wipe, re-install those - and then install the ROM again.
GPS may be a symptom, but not a cause for me since I typically have GPS off. I find that it typically happens when I'm using a networked based app, like the web browser. Following your post I turned on the GPS, started the navigation app and found that my EVO rebooted after the same amount of time I was experiencing with GPS off.
The more I think about it, it does feel like I just assume that it will reboot after a certain amount of time passes (regardless of app). GPS and Internet are two uses where I will have the screen on for more than just checking email and etc.
Your reply gave me hope and I wiped, reset and reinstalled today. All seemed well and then... auto-reboot. This is driving me nuts. I'm seriously considering reverting back to stock to see if that stops it.

Don't go back to stock. I did and it did not fix the rebooting problem. Now I have the rebooting problem and don't have root anymore. Out of the frying can and into the fire.
What's funny is that my phone went through a few days where it would randomly reboot, and this was before I rooted. When it rebooted for the second time in a meeting, I pulled the battery, and didn't put it back in until the meeting was over a few hours later. Don't know if that did anything, but it hasn't rebooted on its own since.

Having same issue and my theory is that its sd card related in my case at least... I think it might have to do with froyo netarchy based kernals found in most of the newer froyo roms combined with a slow sd card. (on hardware rev 2)... try flashing a 2.1 rom like fresh 1 or one of the 2.2 roms with an htc based kernal like the am evolution or cyanogen with snap5 or 7.11 (onyl 7based kernal ive tried so far, was panicking because i thought my evo was wrecked). those have both worked for me and i had that issue with 1.3 baked snack, fresh 3, evio and damage control. got random reboots when phone is totally idle, in use, charging or not. evio runs super smooth but the restarts...)
edit for spelling and update roms that gave me the reboot issue.
+1 for random reboots here... it is CERTAINLY more prevalent during GPS use, but I've gotten it without.
Fresh 3 + King BFS#4 got me in a bootloop requiring wipe reflash, standard baked snack 1.5+whatever kernel it comes with has been doing it.
I dig the battery life I was getting... but if undervolting is causing this... ugh.
I'm also getting the boot loop problem. Stock 2.2, all updates.
I've even done the hard reset.. twice!
I tried to follow it with LogCat, but reboot disconnects adb. I was thinking it was the SprintZone app. The P.O.S. app is doing all sorts of non-sense while booting, but eventually it'll reboot around the 11th time and freeze at the "htc EVO 4G" screen.
I wish we could get some resolve here D;
Random Reboots
Thanks for all the input and I'm sorry to hear that I'm not alone, but it is a bit comforting to know I'm not the only one that is frustrated.
I took gleax's advice and I dropped down to the stock 2.1 release found in the thread number 715915. (Sorry, the forum won't let me paste the link.)
I did the required wipes prior to installing the new ROM and I'm still seeing reboots. I now see the OTA update for Android 2.2 and I'm tempted to accept, then send the phone back to Sprint in the even this is a hardware issue. I'd prefer not to, but there doesn't seem to be a way to identify the issue and work towards a resolution. I've tried logcat, but the log seems to start clean after each reboot. That being the case, I don't know how to capture the log leading up to the reboot that would help identify the issue. Any suggestions on a logging tool and where to post to help several of us that are seeing this issue?
Gleax suggested this is may be SD related, so I bought a class 4 card in addition to dropping down to 2.1. I'll give that a shot and try another clean 2.1 install. I'll post the results here in the event they may help others. I'll likely give it a week before unrooting and seeking help from Sprint. I really need a usable device more than I need root access (although both would be ideal).
I had this problem on a very regular basis when I was running OTA 1.32, 2.1 android.. but since I rooted and went to SteelH's stock 2.2, no issues at all. Updated radios when I did that as well.
Hrm, I may have to try flashing to a stock build for awhile... it'll KILL me, but even fully wiping, new radios, cyanogen, still get crazy reboots.
Everything was working fine until today. My market refuses to download apps or updates, even after a factory reset. Not sure if anyone else has noticed. Can't seem to fix it. Not sure if its server side or some update to the market, but I can't get my apps back until its fixed. Please post here if you know what's going on or have the issue. I'll try WiFi later and see if that helps.
Update: It started working randomly shortly after I wrote this post. Unfortunately, another problem has come up. Now I get unknown error -18 when downloading and installings Google Sky Map, MiniSquadron!, Bubble Breaker, and Bubble Breaker Editor. So essentially all is well, but I'm getting weird errors on one of my favorite apps and one that I just bought and haven't been able to use. I'm going to try a different rom and see if that helps. This is really starting to annoy me...
Update: I did an RUU last night and as of right now, I still cannot access those four apps. Same error -18. Someone else here on the forums is having market issues similar to those I was having at first, so it might just be a server side or recent market update issue.
i have the same problem market gets stuck at downloading
It sucks, but repartition your sd card. Worked for me after getting the same errors. Something about it trying to overwrite an existing file and then failing.
Yeah, I was just googling for information on the error and found out you have to move any existing apps from the SD card to the phone and then delete the .android_secure folder from your card. Guess all of these apps were meant to install to the SD card by default and that's what was causing the error. Fixed my phone now.

Yeah, I've had that problem for a while. Usually if I rebooted or used wifi tether it would start working. They've pushed out a couple of updates to the market in the last couple of days, and I haven't been having problems today at least. We'll see how long that lasts.
Settings, Applications, All Apps, Market, Uninstall updates, clear data, clear cache, force stop. Open market. Fixed.
I have a G2 rooted running CM7 RC1, but since I rooted back in January I have switched from an 8gb to a 16gb to a 32gb microSD card, and lately it has been acting up (drops calls, loses wifi, etc) so I wanted to start over with a clean slate with the latest CM ROM, kinda like reformatting a PC and starting fresh with a new OS. what would be the best way to do this? thanks in advance
Download the latest nightly of CM7: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=vision and put on the root of your SDcard.
1) Enter recovery
2) Wipe data/factory reset (or use a superwipe+ .zip if you want a more "thorough" wipe).
3) Install zip from SDcard > Choose zip > CM7nightly.zip
4) Reboot System
5) Enter your gmail account, etc. get to the homescreen.
6) Fix permissions in ROM manager, reboot again.
And there's your clean slate. If you want to afterwards, you could always format your SDcard too.

I would highly recommend the SuperwipeG2+ if you want a clean slate, so to speak. I had success using it to fix a GPS issue. Of course, everything Martonikaj said was exactly right - but I would definitely suggest the Superwipe tool. You simply flash from recovery rather than using the CWM factory reset option. You can find the file here:

thanks for your replies. ive followed your steps to a T, flashed superwipe, latest cm7, google apps, reboot, fix permissions, sync my google account... but now i have more issues. i cant get tmobile wifi calling to connect, which is a major issue for me because i dont have cell reception in my house. the wifi calling app was a major reason i got the g2 in the first place. i figured it wasnt a clean install so i reflashed cm7 but get the same problem. also, my battery lasted 7 hours before dying with little use. before it died i checked and saw that cell standby had taken almost 80% of my battery use while it was just sitting untouched.
i searched these forums and there isnt much in terms of help for fixing the wifi calling app, so can anyone please help me out? i really like CM for its speed but these are issues that will force me to try a sense ROM. thanks in advance
Perhaps your build.prop needs to be configured to model: T-Mobile G2 instead of HTC Vision. I don't recall the way it's set in plain CM7. I know I had to alter it to get the T-Mobile My Account working properly.... unfortunately I don't use the Wifi Calling app so I can't be of much help in this department. I actually removed it all together.

So, two things. First this battery drain... I would give it some time. Battery drain is always worse right after a flash. You might consider using the calibration app by marosige. It's free on the Market. Or you could wipe battery stats from recovery, but the application is super handy. Battery should improve with time. Mine has been excellent with all CM ROMS - after a calibration and a little time.
And while I could be totally wrong about the build.prop and the Wifi Calling app, you should check it. Using your file manager (Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, to name a few), navigate to /system folder and then find the build.prop, open it as a text document and check the lines:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision
If this is what you see (above), try changing it to this:

I've had to do this a few times in order to get T-mobile apps like My Device to work. I'd hate to see you abandon CM because of the Wifi Calling app...
T-mobile WiFi calling works fine for me on both CM7 and MIUI with a build.prop indicating HTC Vision and not T-mobile G2.
What exact error are you getting when trying to run it? Or whats happening?
As far as battery life, it will improve over time as the previous poster stated, but 7hours 100% to 0% seems a bit off unless there's a ton of heavy use.
I think I have an entirely different problem altogether. The reason my battery life was so bad was because it was searching for a network the entire time, and I can't connect to Wifi calling because T-Mobile doesn't recognize my phone. When selecting T-Mobile under network operators I get "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network" and when I try Wifi calling I get "You are currently not registered with the T-Mobile network. Would you like to register to enable Wifi calling?" and after selecting register I get "W005.4 T-Mobile Network Error"
I'm in over my head. I've tried rewipe data/cache, superwipe, reflash and battery/sim pull, so I guess my next course of action is to head to T-mobile and maybe ask for a new sim card?

Looking back at your first post, this seems to be an extension of the same issue which inspired you to wipe and flash another ROM. I don't know if it's a radio thing, or a SIM card thing... which radio are you using, btw? Have you flashed any radios? If not, yes, I would definitely go and get a new SIM card. It could have just been going bad and now it's dead. You're not in over your head... yet. Try the new SIM card and see what happens.
yup it was the sim card... got a new one from the T-mo store and activated it and my phone is back online! had the same one since 2001 so it wasnt surprising. have never flashed a new radio so i knew that couldnt be it. thanks for your help, i think i got it from here

Glad you got it sorted out. I can't believe you've used the same SIM from 2001. Crazy...

Glad you got it figured out. I definitely wouldn't trust a SIM to hold its integrity and work properly 10 years after you got it lol.
Hey everyone,
I got a Note 4 when they first came out and have been having a lot of issues with it every since. At first it was just signal issues where i was missing calls/voicemails, texts, etc, especially compared to my Note 3. I think started having issues with my phone freezing, heating up, etc. I am thinking about restarting my phone and reloading programs to see if things get better. My problem is that i still have my phone stock and non-rooted due to needing Knox for work. Any programs that you can recommend that i can backup my apps and its data? I am used to using TB for my rooted phone but i am not sure what i can use for a non rooted phone. I basically trying to reload my apps (side loaded and ones i got from the playstore) but also not lose data if i can help it.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Use Kies
Sounds like your problem could be a bad app that doesn't like your phone (note 4?) Anyway using Kies you can delete any apps that you may suspect, old style games are known to create problems like this and side-loaded apps can also fowl things up.
