[Q] Help with stock Desire Z that appears bricked! - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a Desire Z with stock ROM. all I have done to it is rooted and superuser via the Market Place Apps back in Feb and it has worked fine.
Yesterday morning I found the phone was frozen so I pulled the battery. Each time it powered up fine but 5 mins in it would hang. I tried removing apps to see what was hanging and found that with flight mode on it worked ok but when I re-enabled the network it then hung when the sync spool symbol came on. I was going to try to switch off the email check while I tried to fault find but after my 10th battery pool it no longer boots up and just sticks on the HTC logo with white background.
I downloaded the official HTC WWE Froyo Rom but it requires installation via the PC and I am unable to get a USB connection set up. I also downloaded the Vision ROM and edited the name to PC10img.nbh but that doesn't work. I have previously ROM upgraded my WM6 TP2 device but never messed about with Android so not sure if it is me doing it wrong.
I can power up using the VOLUME - & Power and get in to HBOOT. It briefly flashes up a few lines of text stating PC10img.nbh - "No image or bad image".
If I select recovery I very briefly see a handset symbol with a red triangle.
I would appreciate any other suggestions. I have emailed HTC but they are shut until tomorrow. I am worried that I will have warranty issues as the handset is rooted and I can't unroot it before I send it in for repair.
Thanks all. Rich

maybe you got an old version of recovery and thats why it shows up that red triangle, try pressing vol up + power when your in that red triangle and the menu might show up from there you can flash a ROM
remember to check in hboot if you have s-off cause if you dont you need to flash an official image through hboot! if you have s-off you might be safe flashing a custom rom

Sounds like exactly what happened to mine, if so its a hardware defect. There's a faulty chip in there somewhere.
here's a thread with more info on it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039504

Nonione,
Thanks for the reply.
The red triangle flashes up for less than a second and took me a few goes to see what it was. I have tried Volume + and it doesn't do anything.
The device is stock so S-On which is why I wanted to try flashing a stock rom.

Nipqer, thanks for the link,
So is this a hardware failure or a result of some dodgy rom etc? I haven't installed anything except root and superuser via the Market Place.
Looks like it will have to go back to HTC for a repair.

If it's the same problem as mine it's a hardware failure.
There are some commands you can try in the thread I linked to find out if you have the faulty chip or not.
If you can run adb shell from recovery, run this command:
cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/name
if the output is M4G2DE then you have the faulty chip, and there's nothing you can do.

[FIXED] I think I bricked my Desire

Ok so I tried to install a ROM using the ROM manager. My phone is rooted with Super user permissions on.
Anyway I waited about 30 minuted, the phone cycled on and off, and then just hung in the off position.
I could see that the USB charging light was on. I tried to hit the power button but all t hat came on was the bottom keys (they light up but nothing else) I removed the battery and put it back in, tried to reboor and the phone just got stuck on the HTC screen. (the first one)
I can get into the boot loader (holding power and down) but when I am in there I try to go to recovery and it just hangs in the HTC screen again. I tried plugging it into the usb and trying this but more of the same.
Any advice? Yes I have read some of the threads but I am a pretty new user and pretty nervous at the moment at the thought of having bricked this phone.
Thanks for any advice,
Phil
Also the info I get on the bootloader screen is as follows
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.83.00001
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL SYNT0101
Radio 5.09.00.08
Jun 10 2010
Then of course HBoot
I just want to add one more detail. I have tried Fake Flash. I put it onto my SD card and tried to boot into recovery. Again I get to the boot loader but when I click on Recovery the phone simply goes to the HTC screen and hangs there. Then it will either stay in that screen or turn off depending on who knows.
Also I tried formatting a new SD card I had lying around into Fat 32 and then putting fake flash on it and trying to boot with that. Same result.
Again gents, I have read the posts and have tried everything I have listed above so any advice or expertise would be more than welcome. Luckily I am still with in my 14 day return to store no questions asked time frame, but I'd really like to try to resolve this problem.
Thanks!!
I had that problem too. The only way to fix it was to wipe data.
Anyways flash this custom image see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748618
The problem is our devices are SLCD whereas rom manager and clockwork is made for AMOLED.
Goodluck and this will fix it
mfpreach's advice should help you. Just want to say that you can flash without going into recovery, look for PB99IMG.zip in this forum...
I've got the same problem but with an amoled desire - just gets stuck at htc logo - wrote about it here with no help really: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747775
Can't enter recovery & tried official RUU with no success - i'm gonna send mine off for repair i think - didn't know you could flash without recovery though - might give that a go first.
Just managed to fix my phone! See my thread for the solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7548991
Thank you so MUCH!!!!
This absolutly worked! I was able to enter recovery and restore my old image. I didn't even lose any of my info.
Ok so just to clear this up, are there different ROMS for different screens?
Where did I go wrong? Is my ROM Manager the wrong one?

No the ROMs are the same - i think it must have been some random corruption - i also use ROM manager so may be related to that.
Once you are rooted you can flash ROMS regardless of screen type.
What i do is just put the rom zip on my sdcard & then boot into clockworkmod recovery manually and flash the zip from that instead of using ROM manager.
So when u say u boot into cloookwork, do u mean that u boot into the bootloader? I am not sure I 100% understand.

[Q] I think I've bricked my Desire - HELP PLEASE

Let me see if I can explain.
I was running Opendesire 4.0.15 (had been rooted using Revoked on a Mac).
I had modified the recovery using Revoked using amon-ra's ps3 image so I have no proper recovery.
I notices using OD Updater that OD 4.0.16 was available, downloaded that and let it flash it itself.
Now the phone doesn't boot properly, I get the O2 splash screen then what looks like a dark grey screen with very thin vertical coloured bands then back to O2 splash.
It occasionally show the Android screen but not much else.
Once it got to the setup screen with the Touch Android to begin picture and the animated finger. However there was a FC on screen and the touchscreen didn't work, so I couldn't progress.
I can get into fast boot and even the modified recovery but I can't see what to do to get a rom onto it or get it to boot up so I can re revoke it for a proper recovery.
It seems if I leave it long enough it gets to the setup screen but no touch screen working. Then it re-boots.
Can anyone suggest how to get a proper recovery file on at least??
Any help gratefully received.
Edit
From Hboot I can see

So it's an SLCD then?
Please help I can't afford another phone.
Thank you.
I can see the device from fastboot, (fastboot devices lists it by it's serial number)
is there any way for get either a new rom or even just recovery onto it from this commandline?
Anyone?

RUU see's it, (when I have it in bootloader) but when it runs through and reboots the phone, the phone sticks on an H T C screen and the pc is counting looking for bootloader but never sees it.
OK, got the HTC screen, unplugged USB, plugged it back in, ran RUU again, started uploading, green bar moving across screen, then it rebooted, waiting for bootloader, RUU then failed, black screen on phone now, no bootloader, no splashscreen nothing.
It vibrates if I hold power button, it doesn't if I hold back button or VOL down with power button.
Now it's dead.

what RUU did you flash it with?
sounds like you flashed it with a pre slcd screen RUU
the only O2 one I could find on here
RUU_Brav2_UK_1.20.207.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_124865.exe
Now I can still get bootloader / fastboot working, I see it in my device manager and the fastboot command sees it again, is there anything I can do from there?
(damn thing is only 3 weeks old).
Thanks for reply btw
Managed to get a newer Froyo RUU to run to the same stage as I had before so now got a display back , hBoot 093 still for the borked recovery
is there anything I can do other than send it back to HTC?
thanks for reading, really really stuck here.
with files on sd card (pb999.img etc) it now checks those then says CID incorrect
where is it getting stuck now?
is this a branded device? (if unbranded was it branded before)
what did you flash it with?
Is your gold card present?
what os are you using to flash it?
Have you tried using the downgrade utility to flash it back to a version of 2.1? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Hello again )
ok it now just goes to the white screen with the 3 androids skateboarding I have have hboot or fastboot, I don't know the significance of those.
if I select recovery it goes to amonra's poc-psfreedom so I can't even reflash it from there
it was originally an O2 UK phone so has the O2 bubbles on screen
I don't have a gold card :i(
I run a mac but I have installed xp on bootcamp to try to resolve this.
I can see the phone is device manager as Android USB Device - My HTC
It boots to the white screen now when I plug in the usb cable
it had been running happily on OpenDesire 4.0.15 with no problem, but when I called the updater to bring it to 4.0.16 it turned into this mess.
the downgrade utility requires a gold card doesn't it? I don't have one (
edit - more info
the RUU file I have tried again is
RUU_Bravo_Froy2_UK_2.14.207.1_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_144166_signed.exe
it tells me it will go from image version 1.20.207.3
to image version 2.14.207.1
it starts and brings a black screen onto the phone with HTC on it, starts working then fails with erroe 171 usb connection error. (perhaps I need a different usb driver installed?)
edit again - if I unplug the usb cable I get the white screen but only RUU but pull battery and get fastboot hboot back
Hold the press
I think I've recovered it now.
Using that RUU, everytime it stalled out and said waiting for bootloader I tapped the power button and it continued, flashed the whole thing now I seem to have an official O2 Froyo!
Thanks for your input mate.
i dont know how you uninstall that psfreedom stuff, people should just buy the dongle and not risk bricking their mobile phones.
Try intalling the latest version of htc sync or use a pure windows pc rather than bootcamp see if that rectifies it.
its not hard to create a goldcard if you have a microsd slot, I do recommend you make one using the tool from modaco. and try using the downgrader. it could be that the psnation tool is conflicting the the bootloader now its .93
EDIT: was on a call mid type and posted this while you have replied.
Glad its sorted
It's sorted now, thank you.
Dongle is in the post mate.
I really appreciate your input there, I was feeling kinda lonely!
Now it's on what appears to be O2 official Froyo, means no root, DOH!
Cheers fella.
you can use the downgrader tool to downgrade hboot and firware.
then you can root and flash a rooted 2.2 405 rom like the one teppic made
it would then be on the latest 2.2 for EU and be rooted with a compatible hboot
im on hboot 93, im waiting for unrevoked. they seem to be taking an age
You are a genius, I'll have a play tonight.
Thanks mate. - SUPERSTAR -

The red triangle in recovery is the stock recovery. You can press the power button to bring up the menu but it is useless. You can create a goldcard to bypass the verification. Just flash the rom again and see if it went ok.

From what i can understand about gold cards is i need to plug my phone into the computer and mount sdc. I can not connect my to computer due constant rebooting loop it is stuck in.
Never apply UTA updates on rooted phones. It's been a while since the last.

Bricked HTC Desire

Hi guys,
My bro has been flashing roms quite oftenly, I dont know how he does it. I dont use a HTC Desire.
Today he came to me and told me to help him fix up because he couldnt boot to anything.
The phone stay on the White HTC Screen only.
After reading up XDA, I booted into fastboot (Back Button + Power) and tried to Flash HTC Bravo RUU for WEE_Asia.
I used to flash WinMo devices so I thought it should be any problem.
When flashing, everything was fine until towards the end an error saying the package is lost or incomplete. and the RUU updater just leaves me without any choice to revert or what. I didnt not get a screenshot as well.
Now the device is bricked. Power button, anything doesnt work at all, blank screen. yeah..
So any suggestions or tricks to unbrick it?
ADD: Is it this first case of a REAL BRICK HTC Desire? (because I see alot people posting about 'brick' devices but its just merely some software problem)
because as far as I know its quite impossible to brick a device, well and error during RUU update can brick the device, but the error appears in the end of the RUU so Im still kinda unsure what problem is it.
pull the battery out for a min then put back in and hold volume down + power. what happens? does it vibrate or anything?
Sent from my HTC Desire
nope. no vibration at all.
Could it be a battery problem?
because I always see him charging daily and his battery always goes down till 40% or so even in airplane mode!
would it have been the battery problem that caused the RUU error?

doubt it if it only happened after trying ruu. if u were s-off then u cant just run a ruu anyway. this is prob what caused it. do u have a warranty?
Sent from my HTC Desire
Yes the device was S-off when I ran RUU.
Unfortunately, warranty was over last month..
So is this the case of broken bootloader?

I saw some relevant questions in this thread and decided this is the right place for my question. Here are the symptoms of what looks like my bricked HTC Desire It happened to me after I ran (RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783) RUU on my S-OFF phone:
- Take the battery in/out, press power button, just a quick vibrate and nothing happens
- Tried to boot in fastbood (Power button + Volume -) nothing happens
- Plug in the charger - LED is ON (orange)
- The msg on the PC app for RUU was that there was an err during the "upgrade", which was a downgrade attempt, caused by the fact that my phone software was not the right one for that RRU.. or smth like that. Suggesting I go and download the right version.
My question is... is my HTC Desire officially bricked or are we talking about some of those "soft bricks" you guys are referring to with hope for a restore.
Thx outfront, guys.

Thx for the reply! Doesn't budge.
I kept the battery out for a few mins and held down the buttons for a while as well. Screen doesn't turn on. I'm guessing the vibration and LED are good signs?
I've been at it for a while. As far as I got looking for answers throughout the forum... I used ADB app on windows to run command "adb devices" and got a
HT-some-code/serial....................recovery.
So I'm guessing the phone is stuck in recovery. Wonder if I can turn S-ON and try to re-run RUU from this adb thingy.
Ok, I unbricked it For all people that will land here, my (USB) brick occured after running the wrong RUU on a S-OFF Desire.
I started down the list of HTC Desire shipped RUUs from the list of shipped RUU (can't post link) and the phone got back to its out-of-the box state after I hit the right one. Worked for me.

I tried running the command "adb devices" when my bricked Desire is connected on my PC (pressed down the two buttons as well before connecting it) but it says "List of devices attached" without any serial you said that there was.
I don't know how does the "recovery" on bricked phone works. I did my test: remove and reinsert battery and connect phone. LED comes out. (means it isn't permanently bricked) press down "volume down" and "power" buttons and LED switched off. Tells me that recovery must have been booted.
Any suggestions? :crying:
EDIT:
Okay I followed the RUU method (post just above this). I remembered which RUU I am supposed to install (technically RUU_Bravo_Vodafone_TR_1.30.184.3_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_139001_signed.exe). Unfortunately I received the ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR, which is sad. hurr
Before this bricking incident happened, I did an update to get android v. 2.3.4. Then I want to revert back its hboot from 1.02 to 0.9x using this method. Somehow, after the third step I still have S-OFF, HBOOT 6.93.1002, which is frustrating. That's where I went to alpharev and tried my luck. Nothing gets the advantage. I found another topic which then I found this rooting topic. That's where I began dumb and installing the RUU I want to install (which is the asia version, since my phone's RUU should be from Asia).
And that's how I got my phone bricked.
ugh

Unable to get into bootloader or recovery mode, stuck at white HTC logo screen

Hey everyone,
I have read the various topics with a similar title but none helped.
Here is my problem, I bought a used HTC Desire on eBay. It booted just fine on the first start, then I did a factory reset (from within the Android system menu).
Since then, I'm stuck at the white screen with the green HTC logo. I have tried to get into bootloader mode by removing the battery, holding vol down and power, but it just goes straight to the white screen again.
Also connected the phone to the pc, but adb isn't picking up anything...
Any ideas?
Try Power+Back button.
just got one step further:
I can get into fastboot mode with BACK + POWER. But volume keys doesn't work, is that a known issue that I can solve somehow?

Then you'll have to flash a RUU to make it work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772499
It's official HTC Firmware. Your phone will boot after this.
So:
1. Install HTC Sync.
2. Download and extract the RUU.exe from the zip (It's somewhere in there)
3. Run the exe while you connect your phone in fastboot (Power+Back)
4. Wait for it to install
5. Boot

5. Boot

Thanks for the advice, I downloaded the 2.3 RUU and it starts the process, sais
rebooting to bootloader
erasing data
sending...
and after ~30 seconds it just shows me a screen that sais "ERROR_UNKNOWN"
On the phone I see a black screen with a silver HTC logo during the process and when I unplug the USB cable after the error it shows the hboot screen that now sais "update failed".
right before the error is shown it display "updating signature"

It only says "Error_Unknown"? No error number, anything?
Weird.
This may be the reason:
Now, that may not sound too bad to some of you, but there's more: the 2.3 RUU update is limited regionally, as well. It's not available to users in Germany, North America, South America, South Korea, or Japan.

You live in Germany, right?
Use this guide then:
Section 2, S-on

yes I am in Germany,
made some progress (or not?)
I noticed that the device was "unlocked", so I did "fastboot oem lock" and it was "relocked".
Then the RUU update went through - nearly. At the very end if failed again and now I am stuck at a black screen with the silver HTC logo and triangles in every corner.
AW: Unable to get into bootloader or recovery mode, stuck at white HTC logo screen

wtf... tried again flashing the 2.3 RUU, this time it worked, YEAY
But now I have a bootloop, device starts, vibrates 1 time, waits for 3 seconds, and then vibrates 7 times. And restarts...
Ok. Tests are done.
According to the screenshot above and the 7 vibrations, you have a radio brick. It's a brick that can hardly be overcome.
The only solution is flashing the RUU and hoping that the phone will eventually boot.
That's why I don't buy second hand phones.
This thread might help:

freecer did it, was able to flash the 2.3 RUU again successfully. But now I'm back at the bootloop, but now, it simply does vibrate once (no more 7 vibrations) and reboots after some seconds.
So what can I do now? RUU flashed successfully, I'm running out of ideas...
and again the freezer did it, put it in, normally started via POWER button, it booted right through into Android.
Well, let's see if it keeps running now or if this overheating issue also exists in normal operation mode...
Thanks so much for you help so far, the freezer hint saved this device and hopefully will make my gf very happy tomorrow
Hold on I thought it was some pvt1 devices that had overheating issues.
Thought it was fixed on your newer ones. Then again I've never had a problem with my pvt1 desire flashed both hboot and find countless times.

it is a PCT3 device.
but the overheating-reboot issue is rendering it useless. I can use it just fine outside (-2° currently) but as soon as I'm inside, boot-loop...
Anything I can do from a hardware perspective to fix that? Sending it in for repair/replacement is not an option, it's simply not worth the cost.
do you think installing a custom rom of any kind might help?

It's a motherboard fault. If you don't send it to repair, you just got yourself an "Ice-Phone", or a very complex paper holder.
i think a custom rom would help a small bit, like the rom in abaaaabbbb63 sig (mildwild redux) because its small and lite unlike a sense rom. therefor it mite not overheat as quick or as often. but thats only a guess. the only dodgy thing is trying to get ur phone s-off or rooted because if ur phone overheats in the middle of the s-off/rooting progress u could brick ur phone. plus charge ur phone using ur computer coz it uses less power and the phone does'nt heat up as much as plugging into the wall.
