well i guess i just did another something stupid - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello all,
let me first say how much i have really appreciated all that i have learned by reading the forums here. I have enjoyed learning about how to customize my epic experience, but i fear i have made a ghastly mistake.
i was reading the thread about how to make an odin tar file as a means of backing up my current setup (which is srf 1.1.0, genocide kerenel 1.0, and erebos port theme) and thought i might try odin to see if it would work to write that tar back to the phone. well now i believe i am staring at a brick. it will not boot even to dl mode. no lights appear when attempting to charge. i have pulled the battery and even swapped in a fresh battery. any advice or help is appreciated.

Maybe using a different usb cord while having your phone (without battery) plugged into a computer/laptop might help.

Yes, try another cable with the battery out, plug into the computer and try to attain download mode. If that works you can pop the fully charged battery in.
You can also try the magic button that may or may not exist inside the back next to the camera lens.

tried a different usb cable with battery out. no luck. saw a thread a few days ago about the "magic button" so i tried that. no sure i did it right. still no life of any kind in my phone. looks like i bricked it good.

sorry, for your brick : (
But I'm sure you can get a replacement phone if you say you were trying update your firmware via update.zip and your phone dropped by accident leaving it as an result of what it is now

I saw the hole (pinsize) next to the camera lens. I was wondering if this was more of a circuit breaker type reset that only works if it pops. Or that some phones have nothing there depending on board revisions.
The good news is Sprint will probably replace it for free. It should still be under warranty.

what is the best way to get that done. since i messed the phone up with a non-compatible tar?

Go to the store and tell them it was off this morning when you pulled it off charge and it won't turn on. They will play with for an hour to try to get it to turn on then depending on the store give you a refurb or get one sent to you in a day or two.

thanks for the help kennyglass i will be trying that soon.

You are welcome, and I am sorry for your loss. Hopefully you have a recent backup on your sd card.

since i seem to be a "flash-a-holic" always trying some new tweak i do the nandroid backup thing like every other day. so with a new phone i should be up and running again soon.

well, looks like i will be getting a new epic, under warranty thankfully -- store tech says that the usb port and a battery connector look bad. but they are out of stock on the phone and the replacement will not be in for 3-5 days. so for now i have to go back to my old webOS phone. man i already miss my epic. guess i'm jonesin' for a flash. maybe i'll head over to the webOS forums and see what they've got.

HAHA. I still have my Palm Pre for a backup and saw somewhere that somebody was able to put Android on it.

cool!! might have to look that up!

@jarcher1971, I have unfortunately bricked my device as well (story here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090822) and I was wondering, what exactly did you tell the repair tech?
I'm planning to go with the story that it was working fine and then at one point it just wouldn't turn on. Maybe I should include it was after taking the phone off the charger?
Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Yeah, I listed all that a few posts back in this thread.

[Q] Truly Bricked? Getting a Replacement...

Well... today has been a terrible day. Between slacking off this crapload of work I have and bricking my Epic, my life sucks.
I was trying to go from my old syndicate ROM to k0nane's new gingerbread ROM. I have flashed ROMs many times and have been using them on the Epic since I was able to get one for the phone, so no issues with procedure.
I follow the basic instructions as usual, download the files I need, and then go to town.
Anyways, the procedure was supposed to be basic, I was in Odin, phone in download mode and connected to my PC, options selected for only reboot in Odin, pit set, EC05 set in the PDA slot.
I clicked start and it got to factoryfs.rfs and got stuck there. I waited over 20 mins the first time. Then after checking out the forums and googling, I disconnected/closed Odin and did a battery pull on my phone.
I repeated the above process (waiting only at 5-10 minutes each time after it got stuck) atleast 10 times.
At one point it got stuck at boot.bin and I waited over 30 mins for it to pass. I was a dumbass but I followed the same procedure, later realizing it was the bootloader and I was going to be screwed.
I tried booting the phone with no success, but luckily download mode worked. I followed a guide in the forums on how to revive a partially bricked phone (one that didn't boot in to android, but did to download mode) and so I checked the re-partition, etc as asked to do. The phone again got stuck and boot.bin, but eventually passed... then got stuck at factoryfs.rfs, I thought all was and the boot was fixed and did a battery pull after waiting another 20 mins for the factoryfs.rfs to flash.
Tried turning it on, and failed. Tried getting into download mode, and failed. Same with recovery, etc. I tried the supposed hardware reset on the back with no success. Tried a plethora of keypresses to get it to work, battery in/out, etc. When I go to sleep, I will try leaving the phone in the charger, with the battery out.
For now, I have deemed the phone as bricked. I've been working at this for 5 hours now. Called up Sprint a while ago and managed to get myself an e-ticket, claiming the phone just turned off and doesn't turn on anymore. The person tried doing a refresh on their end and then approved the e-ticket.
Tomorrow I'm going to a sprint store and they're going to try to repair it in-store (which will fail) and then as long as I have no screen cracks/water damage (I don't, I have been careful) the tech will put in the order, and I should have the phone by Tuesday.
This is well, if everything goes as planned. I am hoping I don't end up getting billed for the phone after receiving the replacement if they somehow manage to revive the phone and find out I had a custom ROM/rooted the phone.
Any tips on confirming on the brick are welcome, any insight on replacements, bills, etc...
Thanks,
Fr3shY
There is a tiny reset button near the camera button which you need a needle like object to press.
Try that and check the size of the tar you used for odiN. sometimes you get unlucky and get a bad tar. That happened to me on my first odin

remove the battery for a minute
place battery back in
press the reset button by the camera for 60 seconds
walk away from the phone and listen to some isac hayes with your wife for two hours.
then after about two hours do download mode.
try this pit file.... just unzip it in the same directory as your odin...

No response at all? No charge light? Then in the words of a famous Doctor "it's dead Jim". I am sorry for your loss. I wouldn't worry about getting a bill later for the phone, it is pretty much FUBAR'd at this point. No one who has bricked has reported an consequences and there were quite a few in the last month or two.

Nope, no response, no charge light, and well this sucks. Do you think I'll be successful in getting a replacement? And is my story of having it working one moment, and then off and not turning on another alright?
Another concern is receiving a bad refurb model, because I have kept my phone is pretty pristine condition, just a small quarter inch scratch on the screen... are they usually good? (as far as you know)
Thanks for your help and quick responses!

No one has had a problem yet. There was a rash of bricks a month back, and all got warranty replacements. Yes, you pulled it off of the charger and noticed it was off and would not turn on.
As far as refurbs, that is Sprint's SOP unfortunately. Since the phone has only been out for 9 months, it can't be too bad but you can always make a stink to a supervisor if it looks beat up. Most were happy with their replacements, only 1 or 2 had some glitch in software on the replacements.

Good luck. Maybe you will be lucky and your store carries replacements. Mine never does and it takes 2 days.
I got my replacement from sprint when I bricked mine and my replacement was so much better than my original one. Refurbish ones are ok. You don't have to worry about a beat you phone or anything. Most if the time the outside of the phone is brand new. Its just a used processor and internal things. They just flash the software to it.

You probably have a problem with ODIN, try download a different version. OR you can follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904 And you can just flash in CWM back to EC05 and RFS so you can flash the EE03 Rom, this is the method I used, it worked perfectly. Just flash this, then reboot and flash EE03.
This should fix it If you can't access CWM then download an earlier version of ODIN (I had the same problem). But it should work just fine If it helps please hit the thanks button This will save you the time it takes for a replacement!

It is possible, and yeah... I'm kinda pissed I found ReRFS AFTER my device bricked. And later I found out, I could flash my ROM directly over my existing one. I didn't need to flash back to EC05. I'll keep this in mind for the future though!

[Q] Blue light, Nothing else goes on!

I know there must be somewhere in the thread but i can't find one with the same problem as mine. I was in middle of odin to put my phone back to stock. and it was stuck for over a half hr at the same place. so i unplugged it and tried to put it back on but it wont go the only thing that turns on is the blue light. i already tried the jig. its a no go. how can i unbrick this phone?
My phone has shut itself off then when i try to turn it back on i get nothing but a blue light what worked for me was taking the battery out for a couple minutes then trying it again. Have you tried that?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
That happened to me when the phone first came out. Only a blue light came on and nothing else. Even the jig didn't work. I ended up just selling it and buying a new one. I hope someone has figured out a way to fix it for you

You have hard bricked your phone most likely. Like it was said, you can try to remove the battery for a few minutes to see if resetting the capacitors will fix it but I am ninety nine percent sure that it will not work. You have two options.
1) Play dumb at a sprint store
2) JTAG repair from mobiletechvideos
What you have done is flashed over the bootloader so you can no longer boot it or plug it into the computer. Can you post a link to the file that you flashed? My guess is that you flashed an i9000 tar and PIT which is not compatible with the E4GT. Not all Galaxy S2 phones are the same. In fact, they are all different.

That my friend is exactly right. Your cell is gone... Swap or jtag is your only options.
I am going to give the, "taking the battery out for a couple of min", a shot... I was afraid that those two were my last options. The phone is maybe 2 months old and I am not with sprint anymore. Is there a way to claim through warranty or something?

Good question... I do believe that there is a one year manufacturer warranty, but don't know how you would go about making a claim. I would definitely recommend the jtag service its only like $50. Even sprint would charge you $35 to swap if you were still with the m. So if you look at out that way $15 more ain't so bad.

Remove battery. Replace. Plug into charger. Does the batt charging screen come on? If so hold power until it boots. Done. Do your happy dance.. If no charge indication = brick.
The batt recharge didnt come on ill see if i can somehow claim by samsung if not then ill have to send it in to jtag

This same thing happened to me!
What did you end up doing?
This happened to me too, but after flashing gunslinger kernel. I did a battery pull, then it let me boot into recovery.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
same thing happened to me, went back to best buy where i got it and said "i dont know what happened", got a new one on the spot.
On top of it, when i got it at best buy they price matched amazon mobile, so i got it for 130
I Also bought it from Best Buy! But it was two months ago... You think i can still do it by them?
After an hour of searching forums I had realized that the phone was dead and wasn't coming back on. I too had the same blue light problem, couldn't get into recovery, couldn't do anything with the black screen. I took it to Sprint, and they don't have the capability of turning it back on in store. I believe this needs to be done by Samsung, and I imagine Best Buy wouldn't be able to either. The tech told me if he could not repair it, it would be replaced. My concern was the ship time and getting a refurbished unit. He told me because the phone was so new they are almost always replaced with a new unit. He said it was $35 because I didn't have insurance, but to "Come back after an hour, and if I can't fix it and it is insured it will be replaced free of charge." I went home, had Sprint add insurance, went back to the store a couple hours later. They swapped out my unit for a brand new one, free of charge, in about 5 minutes, activated and all. I was very pleased with how everything went as I was PISSED at myself for bricking my phone so bad! In all my years of hacking Palm Pres and Evos I never bricked a phone so bad that it couldn't be powered back on! But now I have a new GS2 (ROOTED )!
I recommend just trying a Sprint Repair Center. I bought mine over the phone. I played dumb and said that I let it die completely, which I rarely do, and when I charged it the blue light went on and it never powered back up. They said that was weird but gave no qualm about it. Hope this helps..

[Q] I fracked up, hard. Bricked.

I hardbricked my S3. I messed up, I know. It was my fault that I didn't notice that the Slimbean was only for the international version. I have been looking online for a solution, but all I'm seeing is that I have to get a new phone. I cannot access Recovery or Download mode with or without the battery in while or while not plugged into the computer. Though, while the battery and SD are out, the charging/notification light will light up when plugged into the computer for about one minute, but that's it. Is there anyway to turn it into Sprint for a new one? It's been under a month. So...any advice?

did you mean to quote me? i was just commenting on him saying he didn't have a soldering gun... i'm not saying if it will work or not, but if he did want to try it, it's a fairly simple object to make, with very simple and cheap tools. i don't have to search to know that it's just a few resistors and a male micro usb plug, maybe 15 bucks for everything including the soldering iron.

That is what I'm planning on doing tomorrow.
UPDATE: I did get it replaced yesterday. Told me it'd take thirty minutes, went out and got lunch. When I came back, they said they have no clue what happened to it to cause it to fry like it did, so they swapped it out for a new model. I'll root tomorrow when I have more time. I'll stick to what I can find here on XDA now on. Any recommendations for a good AOKP ROM?

I know, foolish. Coming from the OG Evo, I didn't have to worry about seeing if it was American or International and which carrier it was for. I'm being more careful this time.
Call samsung say the phone died and won't come on. They will replace it as long as there is no physical damage. One year manufacture warranty is still valid use it f sprint don't waste your time. Samsung is fast at sending you a new or refurbished phone. I had several phones replaced. They send you a new phone or used phone and a box to send your old one. They don't check for rooting or nothing they just install new software on the phone and send it out to the next person. Now ups is my issue with the entire process, they Just leave it on your door step even if your not home it happened twice thank god no one stole my phone, I thought we were supposed to sign for it but I guess not.

Happened with my wife's phone as well. Full charged then it just shut down. Tried everything and nothing. Sprint told me it was fried.

[Q] Hard Bricked, possibly hardware?

Hey guys,
I've been having issues for the past month or so with random reboots while using the phone followed by boot loops requiring a battery pull to get it to work again. At first I thought it was a software issue, so I returned to stock, which didn't help, and then installed a few other roms. I'm 99% sure it is a hardware failure, as now the phone is completely dead. It was fine when I went to bed, and in the morning it showed no signs of power (or heat). I tried 2 different batteries and 3 chargers, so I'm pretty sure it's toast. It does not show up in the device manager so I can't odin or KIES recover to stock, or do anything else with it for that matter. Download mode doesn't work, and the phone is literally a useless hunk of plastic.
Having said that, I am getting a replacement phone. What I'm concerned about is if the storage on the phone will be examined upon receipt by either T-Mo or Samsung. I was using CM10 when it went dark, however because it was working (with the random reboots still) the night before I'm pretty sure it's not a flashing issue (as it worked fine after the flash, well as fine as a phone does that randomly reboots).
Do they have the capability to remove the storage from the phone and check it against something else? Is there a way to wipe it without being able to odin/power it on?
Am I over thinking this? Will they just send it back to samsung who will test the power, then pitch the phone?
Is there anything else I should try to do to fix it?
Thanks for your time.
You could by a USB download mode jig for like $5 to see if it can get you into download mode. I wouldn't worry about the storage too much.
If it's completely bricked (like can't even get the bootloader to pick up), not charging, and still under warranty, odds are they will just replace it without wasting too much time on it.
Would the download jig do anything better than just plugging it into the computer with the buttons down? I didn't flash a bad kernel or anything like that (as in it booted and rebooted a few times without new issues) and it was a sgh-t989 kernel (which I used the buttons to get into recovery with).
I do have the replacement on the way, as it's my work phone too so I really need it next week. If the general consensus is not to worry about it I may just leave it. The water indicator isn't pink so I'm in good shape, and if they see it's bad and it's not worth the time to repair I doubt they would audit it/do additional tests.
Also, on the plus side I had 1 tiny microscratch in the year I've had the phone and it would fill with finger oils (really only obnoxious on white backgrounds). Here's to a scratch free screen!

I have a question my phone is hardbricked and won't charge or access bootloader. I have no insurance what are my options? I'd appreciate your expertise. Thanks

Are you sure your phone does not charge or it just doesn't simply turn on? Try testing your battery, maybe if a friend has a similar GS2 you can try your battery with his to see if it still works. The try the USB Jig mentioned above to get in to download mode if you haven't done so yet.
Depending on when you got your phone and if you have the original receipt you can try contacting Samsung and get a RMA code to send the phone to a be fixed at a support center. Your last option would be to sell the phone for parts if it's still in any good condition. Good luck!

Thanks alot. Where's the best place to buy a USB Jig. I couldn't sell my phone for parts, I'd smash it to pieces first. Sounds dumb but that's how I roll. I tried a different battery that didn't work. A USB jig is my last hope, Unless there's a place I could send it for repair outta my pocket. Guess I gotta excuse to buy the Note ll now.

Since you seem like the type who likes to mess around with things, you can try making a USB jig on your own. This site has great instructions on how to do so. If you have a USB cable which I'm sure you do and go to your closest electronics store you can find some resistors. Hopefully that will help you out before you go ahead with buying the Note 2, GS4 or whatever the next expensive flagship phone is, lol. Good luck!

Yeah per my original post I couldn't get into download mode, and the failure wasn't caused by an improper kernel flash.
I got the replacement through T-Mobile today, and sent the old out.

[Q] Need help unbricking new phone!!!

Hey guys, this is my first time on this site, I was given this forum from a friend. Anyways, I just had an upgrade today with spring to their Samsung Galaxy S2. I attempted to root the new phone using Heimdall because it was compatible with my Mac instead of Odin. Somewhere along the root the phone became bricked with a flashing blue LED light. I'm unable to get anywhere with it, I've tried to remove the battery for an extended amount of time, attempted to get back to the download screen via volume down & power, tried the holding home with volume down & power button together, . The battery was at full charge during the root so I'm not quite sure what went wrong. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I don't know which ROM may of been flashed either...
You've hard bricked. There is no recovering unless a JTAG can fix it.

Not trying to bash you, but if today was your first day after upgrading to a new phone, you should've probably researched our phone a little bit and how to properly root it before attempting to do so.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. Wasn't very smart on my part. I'm going to take it into the sprint store in the morning and tell them it kept giving me system updates so that's the reason it froze my phone. I should be able to exchange it because it's only a day old. I went in right before close and the guy told me the battery just needed to be charged, which obviously wasn't the case but they won't know that.

Is the blue led flashing or solid? If its flashing usually if you charge the battery in a separate device/external charger or swap the battery for one fully charged from an external source it'll work. Blinking led usually means the battery is too low to fully boot the device
Solid blue led on the other hand means you're FUBAR and need a replacement
I like to break stuff!

Solid blue I think I should be good to go tomorrow without any hassle because I bought it from them this afternoon. They saw me come back in right before close so the employee told me the wrong information & thought the phone was good when it wasn't.

For reference, can you include a link to what you tried to flash?
Let's make sure the next phone gets rooted without the BLOD...
Here is what you do....take it back to sprint... Tell them it kept saying you had some sort of update.. So you clicked " update " ....then say it rebooted a few times and the last time it never came back on... They should replace it free.... Dont mention rooting or anything else...
