Hi Guys,
Don't know if I should be posting this here but I'm at a loss, I have in my possession the HTC Desire and the Samsung i9000 both brand new, and I want to keep one and sell the other.
PROBLEM IS I have no clue which to keep and which to sell. Both have their pro's and con's yet I need to make a decisions and...FAST lol as I need the money!
What do you guys reckon? Any help would be needed!
Thanks!
Rolphez
I probably go for the desire as I dont like the iphone lookalike of the samsung galaxy.
And if you need the money you'll probably get more for the samsung as its just released in Australia.
The GPS on the Desire is amazing... where as on the Galaxy S, all I've heard is reports of how bad and useless it is... that made my mind up when I almost bought one
Thanks for the input I'm leaning more towards the desire at the moment yet the screen and sound on the samsung are heaps better
What I mainly don't like about the samsung is the unneeded samsung crap they include in their rom.
The Htc sense is brilliant but I must admit the touch responsiveness is far better on the samsung.
Hard choice!

You can always root the samsung and remove the crap
Or just use a different launcher...
In videos I saw, Samsung Galaxy's CPU was performing noticeabley better, especially in 3D apps.
The Samsung should have aproximately 3x the 3D performance that the N1 and the Desire has.
Due to the 3D chip they're using.
hard choice indeed, i imagine the galaxy camera is also better, maybe if you remove all the bloatware from the galaxy it will be more responsive
it's also better outdoors?
i think galaxy, but it all depends on your needs, init!
btw i luvs me desire
well, galaxy s got super amoled and better gpu...everything else is same or better on desire. lame UI on samsung and i rly dont believe in samsung updates, after seeing what happened to i7500... imho desire
I have almost the same predicament.
I currently have a HD2 and I was so dissapointed that software wise, it was at the end of it's life. I thought that was a stupid faux-pas on the part of HTC and feel incredibly let down, as a lot of HD2 owners do. It looks like Android isn't ever going to be a viable option on it, and if it were, it would probably be a half-working shell.
So, thanks to O2 Ireland changing pricing in my contract, I was able to get out of my 18 month contract by 16 months on it so I bought a desire. The first thing I noticed, was that sense was nowhere near as polished as on the HD2, but I can live with that.
To cut a long stgory short, the network I was sold the phone on was utterly useless for data (Meteor) so i cancelled that contract, and tried to get the desire on voda. There were none in the shop, but the salesman in carephone warehouse in Ennis, kindly offered to sell me a samsung s i9000 on the proviso, that if if didn't like it, I could take it back and get a desire (as long as I made or received no calls/texts) so I stuck a disabled voda sim in and use it via wifi.
I instantly hated the Galaxy s because of 2 things. The blatent Iphone look, and the cheap plastic build quality of it. I can see that chrome outer edge looking worn in no time at all. Build wise, this is the worst phone i've come across. The battery cover is so thin and flimsy, and it's polished plastic so just inviting scratches and finger marks.
Anyway, 1st impressions aside, The User interface was just awful, But I have to say, that now i've installed launcherpro, and fancy widget I am really enjoying the phone.
I have a few days to choose which one to finally end up with (the Desire, or the Galaxy) and at this point I am torn.
I think what worries me most with the Galaxy, is updates. There will be an update to android 2.2 sometime in the far future, but I've heard others say thats the end of the official road. That in itself doesn't bother me, as long as newer versions of droid can be put on it. I think thats where most peoples concerns with this phone are. The desire has a company behind it with a better (but not always in the case of the HD2 and a few others) track record of updates, and there is a much larger community of cooks and enthusiasts for the desire.
The info out there at the moment on the Galaxy is sketchy. I've read people talking about how any cooked rom is only made from an official rom. Does that mean that when droid 3 comes out, that this phone is left behind? Does the same stand for the Desire?
Sorry for the long post.
Dave
PS. I just remembered my other MAJOR grievance with the Galaxy s. You have to use Samsungs proprietary software to access the phone via your computer. On the Desire, I just plugged it in, and could instantly see the sdcard. Not tried it with linux, but I suspect the galaxy won't be seen. Think I just made my mind up... Or maybe not.. Aargh
Thank you all for the replies, and I don't mind the long replies Dave, it's always best to hear such experiences as it helps me make a decision.
Here are my Pro's and Con's of both devices:
Starting with the Cosmetics:
1. The Build Quality of the Desire is by Far better than the I9000 - the i9000 feels like a toy rather than a phone.
2. The Desire looks much better than the Samsung i9000 - The whole reason I moved to Android is to forget the much hated (hatred is a personal opinion) iPhone look I don't want to be reminded by it again!
3. The Samsung i9000 is lighter than the Desire and although I actually didn't mind the lighter weight, my hand preferred to feel something solid rather than a piece of plastic. (I have to admit the HTC legend is my preferred phone as far as solid design is concerned!)
4. Samsung has a bigger screen than the Desire, and it's definitely brighter or cripier with it's Super AMOLED but pixel count is the same, and the 3.7" is more than enough in the Desire.
Moving on to other stuff...
5. I played some nice 3D games on the Samsung and I must admit for those who are into gaming, it's brilliant, I don't really care about such games i'm more into word games and stuff which the Desire manages to perform just fine in running them.
6. Using Swype input on the Samsung is much better than the desire, although I did manage to install Swype on the Desire and it works fine, but Samsung is more responsive it was just a pleasure to type on it.
7. Samsung's rubbish crap software on it is annoying and I seriously can't be bother rooting and installing custom Roms on it, I'd rather do it on the Desire - simpler and have a bigger variety of ROMS and updates...
8. I think I just convinced myself - Desire it is! LOL But i'll continue a little, GPS works much better on the Desire...
9. HTC is a much better mobile phone company for android systems (my opinion anyway)
10. Sound is better on Samsung than on Desire.
11. Samsung gives you 2GB space to install your apps on Desire gives you on 512MB but I believe this hurdle can be easily passed through A2SD.
12. Samsung comes with 16 GB Storage...which, though it's a good thing, yet you can buy a 16 GB micro SD for the Desire...Problem solved
Yea, the list can continue, but these are my thoughts...it is a hard decision to make...but i think weighing the pro's and con's...Desire beats the Samsung despite it being inferior with some of the hardware specs, I'm sure HTC will release something soon to match or surpass Samsung...
btw, just a lil question...how better is sound on galaxy s? i got desire, but i got no samsung to compare them
just curious, since im mainly using phone(other than phoning ^^) as mp3 player
For me, The perfect Android phone would be the HD2. I am appaled they wasted such a superb device on a dead OS. To double the insult, they will not offer a WM7 update path (I realise that's down to M$ but thats no damned excuse to someone who bought it thinking it would be future proof for a year or 2)
I love the size of the HD2's screen (but hate the touch input, it's very poor), thats why I was drawn to the Galaxy S. The screen is simply superb. Even using the stock droid keypad, the experience is much better than the HD2 and Desire combined. It is a pleasure to use the keypad, and swype performs really well. The desire by comparison is dull and boring. The colours don't jump out at you, and it's impossible to use in daylight.
I read all your pro's and con's and can only agree with you (apart from the sound, as I haven't compared them. I don't bother with mp3's etc.)
I think I am definately leaning more towards the Desire at this point. Technically it isn't as good. The screen is poor when compared against the Galaxy S. The buttons are clunky and unintuitive (The touch sensitive buttons on the Galaxy S are it's best feature IMHO), and the power button positioning is a pain in the the you know what! But it is likely to be much better supported by the community, and the company and thats important to me, as I fully intend to get back into developing again. The Galaxy S's onboard storage of 8 or 16GB is a major plus, but as you said a Micro SD card fixes that (although slower).
I'm going to investigate the rom cooking side of the Galaxy S now to to finally make my mind up. I saw a thread asking for £9.95 to access an online kitchen, but I thought that was against the principals of the community. Can't stand people trying to make money out of other peoples knowledge. If thats the kind of thing to expect from the average Galaxy S developer, then HTC it is
I decided on the Desire as it was voted and chosen by multiple sites best mobile phone of last year. Also got an HD2 just because it looked fantastic and will probably be the last wm6.5 phone - lots of apps I like still not on Android.
It's simply a fantastic phone with great community support. Owning it 2 weeks I've already rooted it, got apps2sd+, froyo (defrost), now froyo with sense (djdroid)...
I loved the HD2 when it worked, it went back to HTC for a no quibbles change of motherboard as it was constantly rebooting. My experience with Samsung customer service and support has not been great I must say (have an Omnia). Battery was never satisfactory, gps fix terrible, TomTom was not working first 6 months as Samsung's gps implementation was plain bad...
A friend got the Samsung, waiting him to break it so I can say 'told you so'...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I decided on the Desire too. The GPS on the Galaxy was unuseable. It's a great device, but I think i'm going to get much more mileage out of the desire. So took it back today, and got a shiny new desire.

Not to mention, 32GB MicroSD's soon to be coming down in price! And performance wise, I doubt you will be able to notice a difference on a decent class.
Think you chose the better deal with the Desire, just for the overall quality it gives you, even in its relatively small stature... I wanted the Evo, it's not in the UK, the Desire is a perfect stepping stone till we get 4G, although a stepping stone as is any phone.
I think Desire it is for now, until HTC release a new better device...until then I don't think the Samung i9000 is worth it (even with all it's pro's)...I have a brand new one with me for sale...anyone interested?!
Unless you really use the 3D chip from the Galaxy S I would go for the Desire. Samsung's phone quality is rubbish, the Galaxy is no exception.
As said the GPS is very poor, while the Desire's is very good. The processor itself isn't much better than the Desire's. And if you get even one update on the Galaxy you should be happy.
The SUPER AMOLED is a bit nicer but that's mainly because the Desire has a relatively cheap AMOLED screen. It won't help you much in direct sunlight although they claim it will.
The resolution is the same and personally I think 3,7" is a better phone size than 4".
I agree with you on that one...
One thing struck me from using the Galaxy S is the screen quality and touch responsiveness compared to the desire. The Galaxy S pisses over the desire in this department. Add the better Camera and camcorder and I was actually thinking of moving from the desire to the Galaxy. I use the phone for a lot for navigation duties so to hear that the GPS is lacking is a real shame. Is it a hardware problem or something that can be fixed by an update that it will probably not receive by the sounds of things?
So it seems eveyoone hhas mixed reviews on the phone. Some people love it others dont. Can people but a few scentence review and there biggest problem. Most problems ive seen have been software.

For me, I'm really disappointed with the plastic body of the phone. It makes the phone looks like a toy when holding in hand despite being the flagship phone.
I don't care how strong the polycarbonate body is, even holding S2 feel better in the hand.

In my opinion, the One X looks much better built than the S2. The polycarbonate does not look cheap and plasticky.
If you can wait a month, the Galaxy S III will probably be announced, and the other competing phones like the Optimus 4x will start popping up. Really, this is the first quad-core phone and it is displaying all the telltale qualities of a 1.0 phone, despite HTC's supposed commitment to quality over quantity. This is also their first unibody polycarbonate phone, so two firsts is a really big gamble for a phone buyer. The first dual-core phone last year was the Optimus 2x. Tons of issues and even a class action lawsuit. Even if this is the one you plan to buy no matter what, I would still give it a month to iron out software kinks and hardware manufacturing issues, and then buy a later version of it.
Would be better to see what the competition comes out with and then making a decision. Also gives time for the price to drop.
To buy, or not to buy, that is the question.
I will probably wait till Galaxy S III gets released (22 may) and then decide.
The fact is that whatever phone you buy, a better one will be released soon enough afterwards that you'll wonder if you should have waited - but if you play that game, you end up waiting forever. Which is why I don't have a tablet yet.
With the One X, to some extent I think it depends on how much you like HTC Sense. The SGS3 might well have better specs, but I like Sense, so I wanted to stick with HTC.
I've only had it 2 days, so it's difficult to give a detailed opinion. But I like the feel of the phone, external build quality seems good, the screen is fantastic, and Sense 4.0 is a major improvement over previous versions. My only concern is the lack of a microSD card, but in all honesty I rarely filled up the 32GB card I had in my DHD, so I'm hoping that won't be an issue. The only issues I've seen so far are all software, and updates will come.
I haven't unlocked and rooted yet, as I have a 14 day cooling off period to see if I'll keep it or not. But early signs are that I will.

Should screen flickering and lag stop me from buying?
My 2 year-old Desire has almost had its time, since it started randomly corrupting my card over the last couple of months so I've been looking for a new phone. The moment I saw the One X, I knew this phone was for me - big screen, a a truckload of cores, ICS w/ hardware buttons, too-large internal storage, awesome camera. Under no circumstances am I buying a Samsung or LG phone, so waiting for the competition is off my to-do list and I love and have always loved (even much more since ICS came around) HTC Sense, so here goes the other major complaint I've seen. To be honest, I don't care if video recording doesn't look pristine - I'll probably never use it anyway.
My only concern is about a couple of problems I've read about on this forum - screen flickering and scrolling lag. I know there are also some apps missing from the X's play store, but I'm almost certain they'll be back with Tegra 3 - optimized versions very soon, along with many other interesting new one. So the question is as follows: Are these 2 problems big enough to hold me back until the next device I like (which may well be the next high-end HTC)? What would you do? Thanks!

I am going to be getting a phone with a company called iwireless which is a tmobile affiliate. They only really have two decent phones to choose from. They are a Motorola xt886 and a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I am tyring to decide which one is going to be better for me in the long run. I will be rooting it and trying out different roms.
Here are some pros of the Nexus
-Galaxy nexus has a much bigger community behind it as compared to the xt886. looking at the forums it kind of seems that way.
-Galaxy will be likely have people developing for it for a couple years (I hope)
-HD Super AMOLED™
-1.2GHz Dual-core, OMAP, TI
Some pros about the xt886
-ColourBoost™ qHD (960 x 540 pixels) TFT LCD
-1.2 GHz dual core
-8MP camera
-(from Motorola site) This smartphone has a splash-guard coating too, a high-tech, invisible nanocoating that shields against the unexpected splash—not only on the outside, but on the electrical circuit board inside the housing as well.
They are both the same price. Also iwireless will be getting the S3 at some point. It was suppose to happen before Christmas but they have been having some slight issues apparently.
Should I hold out and wait for the S3 (which could be months, no idea really) or go with either one of these phones? Thanks for the help!!
-haryy
go for the nexus.. that qhd screen sucks compared to the screen of the nexus and the cameras that motorola uses are really bad, even if it is 8 mpx , the pics will probably look worst than the pics taken with the nexus. and being the xt886 a little brother of the original razr you can forget about getting any update.
Don't buy Motorola.
They promise an update, but when the time comes, they just move it to the next quarter. When the time comes again, they say "Sorry, but your device will stay on GB 2.3. You can get a 100$ refund towards the new motorola device", which will be updated for sure, as they promise.
Pretty much everyone here is a nexus user and will recommend such. With that said play with both, see which you like better, walk out with nexus.
Honestly I considered renewing my contact and getting an S3, but after playing around with a friends I'm happy with my gnex, its noticeably smoother in everyday use and it gets updates. So after seeing the difference in performance a nexus provides, even with weaker hardware, I've determined any android device I purchase must be a nexus.

Searched for Samsung SG4 but only found some phone released in 2011?
What other keyboard phones are there right now? Has the last keyboard phone already been released?
There sure are a lot of these threads all over xda
Anyway I'm with you, I need a qwerty and I don't care what they say a bigger screen isn't better, I've been using m nexus 7 for 6months now and it still is slower and filled with more mistypes then when using a qwerty. I've used many other talents too as well as my friends note 2, they can be nice but still need a hardware keyboard.
The vision is still the best around in my opinion, I also have a dream and a sidekick 4g and an etc doubleshot, their all good in a way but really the only step up right now is the galaxy relay, even this is hardly worth the money over a vision.
This is just my opinion but until there is something better why leave such a nice phone

Got to agree with demkantor there, I also have a nexus 7 and as long as I'm holding it upright as you would with a phone (you know, clasping you fingers round the back and typing with thumbs) it is not as quick as with my G2. Resting it on your lap and typing with multiple fingers is pretty speedy however, even in portrait.
I put up with my G1 until the battery couldn't get me through the day and it was 5 revisions of Android behind (yeah it can run Gingerbread, but not well, and ICS and JB are a joke on the G1) and I expect to do the same with my Vision, which I love. It's got the very latest version of Android in 3 different varieties (AOSP, CM, AOKP) and it's just great, the battery lasts for days, it's usable at lower-than-stock clock speed and the keyboard is fantastic, I don't know why so many people moaned about it being worse than the G1's, it's just different and you get used to it.
Also, having a physical qwerty keyboard is very useful for more "root-y" purposes: it's so much easier to use Terminal Emulator for example, and console emulators are a lot more fun with a physical keyboard.
I'll be lost when the time does come that I need an upgrade, because phones with keyboards just aren't being made anymore... it's a niche market, which unfortunately I'm part of. Look here. I figured I'll have to go dual core next (at least), and 512MB RAM appears to be pushing it a bit in terms of amount needed for Android, and also development doesn't appear to even be that great for phones with keyboards.... look at the Desire HD, Desire S, or even the original Desire forums compared to the Vision.
...That said, the Moto Photon and DROID 4 look nice... shame I'm in the UK , not a keyboard-phone in sight after the Vision over here. Anyway, long live the Vision!
Sad that no moron OEM sees the need for a QWERTY Android phone.
I'd get the Nexus 4 next now that it's in stock. Or maybe consider going tablet only and get a nexus 7 hspa. (I'm considering doing that after my contract is up)

I was having that issue too. It ended up just being the battery. I got this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KPF59Q/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
The Anker 1600mah, and all the random powerdowns went away. It's lasting about 20% longer than the original was too. Cheap fix if the G2 is still doing it for you in other areas.
I am considering a Nexus 4 at the moment, but I think it's just WANT, not need, so I'll probably manage to avoid that $300 outlay for a while yet.

Hey, I couldn't agree more, I'd love to have a Nexus 4 but I really really don't needd one, not in the same way that I had to get a Vision because my G1 wouldn't last a few hours on it's battery. Hey, courtesy of the Andromadus team, adamz and Fyodor we have 3 different versions of the he latest version of Android.
Also, I also have an Ankers 1600mAh battery, it-s awesome, lasts more than 2 days between charges! (Although I'm not exactly a heavy user, but its miles better than the stock 2 year old HTC one)
Experience report - missing my keyboard
I had trouble finding a well-speced qwerty phone, so I had to settle for a Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE. It was either that or a Nexus 4.
My plan was to get a case with an external bluetooth keyboard for it. I got one and it's bad, so now I've ordered another type.
If I could get a Desire Z with more memory and a fresher CPU, that would have been my choice
The qwerty-phones I considered were:
Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G
Motorola Photon Q
LG Mach (LS860)
Motorola Droid 4
These models don't have the highest specs, but that may be outweighed by a decent keyboard.

of these, the Droid 4 has the best keyboard by far, and the LG Mach has the prettiest screen (IPS panel)
The problem with the Droid 4 is there is near null development. When Android 5.0 come out, you'll either get a ****ty expirence or you wont get it at all.
No ASOP, no CM, no nothing. Thats why the Droid 4 hasnt exploded.

I'm probably gonna buy myself a new phone pretty soon, been looking a lot at the HTC ONE, looks like a solid piece of work!
But pretty expensive, and my nephew has a galaxy s3 he's selling cheap, only problem is the samsungs are so plasticcy, there's just not that much of a quality feel...
I am also considering the htc one x plus.
If only we we're able to upgrade the processor and memory of our DZ, or just the memory for that sake and I probably wouldn't even consider buying a new one

Desire Z has been a great phone. Unfortunately, every Android coming out these days seems to be a 6" phablet with a touchscreen keyboard.
I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I might look at Blackberries, especially if they come out with a slider.

Since the very beginning of Android, I've been a die-hard HTC user. To this day, my favorite phone of all time was my HTC Nexus One. I will always be a fan of HTC and their devices, even the sparsely-developed ones that I've worked with (and fought with) over the years. I will surely miss my old HTC Amaze.
But today, I chose logic over loyalty. I literally "JUMP'd" ship from my familiar S.S. HTC fan-boat into the Sea of Samsung. The specs on the Samsung Galaxy S 4 are truly some of the most impressive I've ever seen. IMHO, they easily outstrip the HTC One, which I had originally planned on purchasing. A quad-core 1900mhz Snapdragon processor? External SD memory that's expandable to 64gb? A 13mp camera? 2600 mAh battery? That's insanely ridiculous. This smartphone is more powerful than my HP laptop, which was top-of-the-line when I purchased it 2 years ago. And considering it was the same price as the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z, I had no choice. I bought it.
I have never been a fan of Samsung devices, or Korean-made devices in general. I've been burned one too many times by LG to EVER buy another device from them, I don't care how awesome the new G2 looks. My poor G-Slate has been sitting on my bookshelf for 6 months now, the only device I ever permanently bricked. But the specs on the Galaxy S 4 were just too good for me to overlook. It's been many years since I've worked on or tested a Samsung device, but I look forward to contributing what I can.
Here's to hoping this behemoth of a phone is all it's cracked up to be. *crosses fingers*

As someone who's owned both devices, I'd have to say you picked the worst time to jump off the HTC ship. On paper the S4 has an edge in battery through a larger removable battery and is clocked .2 higher than the One. The advantages stop there. As far as the memory goes, the One comes with either 32gb or 64gb and that was sufficient (for me) , therefore neutralizing the advantage of being able to use an sd card. Now let's discuss the software. Despite the higher clock speed in the S4, Touchwiz is a lagfest and essentially neutralizes that already negligible advantage of higher clock speed. Sense 5 is beautiful, polished, and provides a NON-LAG experience. The camera on the One is also nice, but it doesn't compare to the S4 outside of low light shots IMO. This being said, the S4 is still an excellent device and I'm sure you will enjoy owning one, welcome aboard. I wouldn't say it is better than the One though. Just my 2 cents

Like you, i had the same experience. I had numerous htc devices: imagio, g2, sentation, amaze, one s, one x, one x+. Loved them. Htc started leaving sd cards out (turned me off). I hated touchwiz now i am in love with it. Laggy? Yes it is. Hopefully ill get better. Loved and still do pre -sense 5 iterations. Most i hate about sense now is when they started incorporating the dotted menu in the botton of the screen. What in the world were they thinking to waist screen space with 3 dots?. Anyways sometimes hate becomes love. I hated touchwiz now i am in love with it.
I'm a die hard Samsung fan. But I never let passion take over reason. I HATED having such a powerful device with such a laggy launcher. The end of my woes? Custom rom/kernel with Holo launcher. Complete with cLock widget and sunbeam live wallpaper. Gives me a Google S4 phone-like experience and speed whilst retaining the touch wiz features and camera. Now I'm glad I kept this phone... Daylight pictures are just simply ridiculously good looking...

Just switching launchers without rooting and flashing another rom took care of the lag. This is a great phone!

Indeed it does, but I like having full control of my phone
No doubt HTC make good products. I came from a Nexus One myself and also an HTC One S. I don't regret getting the GS4 over the HTC One which is a good phone also IMO. It just come down to what you're looking for. My daughter wants a GS4 also, I might talk her into an HTC One just in case I want to trade.
