I am coming off a bricked phone so I am a little apprehensive about trying to root without a clear guide, especially froyo since it just got rooted from my understanding. I am sorry if this isnt in the right section, I really couldnt tell if this belonged in the General forum as it is a question, or if it belonged in the development as it is regarding Root/Roms. I would appreciate any help, and even any remarks on how I am misposting in this forum .
There is no root for froyo if you installed the official updates. You can try the previous methods but I doubt they work. You may be sol until someone decides to work on finding an exploit but I doubt that happens until there is an official release. The only rooted froyo that is out is for people who were rooted prior to froyo. Sorry.
If you have Froyo OTA (from Sprint) installed, you cannot yet root it (if/when someone releases root instructions). You have to already have your phone rooted with nand access and then install one of the rooted Froyo updates (there are two right now, from Avalaunch and netarchy). As well, there is a AOSP FROYO from cyanogenmod.
The wiki from toastcfh for this forum gives all sorts of instructions and options for rooting. Good luck.

So please don't murder me for this question, i'm a noob coming from a pre.
I updated(or i should say my phone automatically updated) the 2.1 sprint image from the last update with the SD card Fix. This was before I got to this forum about rooting, etc.
Are my options to only go to the sprint store and get a replacement phone if I want to root now? Or is there a way to backtrack.
I tried to root last night but kept getting daemon errors when trying to connect to the phone. :S

What software version are you running? From homescreen go to menu>settings>about phone>software information and give me your software #.
1.47.165.1
I thought I could with this, because this is what the simpleroot software is showing in the program.
I did a full erase also last night with the volume down power button trick.
search for simpleroot 1.47 either on google, youtube, or here. there are loads of vids and tutorials
Also, there is a Q & A forum and would suggest you use that next time you have a question. You'll get your ass handed to you for posting in the dev section.

Yea I know. I didnt post this thread. i just posted IN it.
I tried simpleroot and it didnt work. I just wanted to confirm that it COULD work, instead of playing around with it aimlessly for hours. Only to find my phone was locked.

Simpleroot is the best option to root v1.47. Unrevoked has known issues, AVOID it. Simpleroot was made from my earlier posting & guide of manually rooting 1.47, so I know it works. WATCH THE VIDEO he made!! It practically cups your nuts the entire way thru the process with both PC & EVO screen videos. Once you do simpleroot, I recommened doing toast's part 2. Right after that do a nandroid backup. Then apply one of the rooted Froyo ROMs posted in the dev forum (there are both odex and deodex versions posted).
However (as already stated numerous times in numerous threads) if you apply the OTA update, your screwed.
Im going to make this simple...since froyo..sniff...multitouch and tethering tried rooting and i did do th ota update btw so i guess thats my initial issue

So what is your question? Not to sound like an ass, but you sound like a 5 year old who just dropped his ice cream cone!
Have you searched for what you are looking for already? There is a lot of threads that deal with 2.2 and tethering.
From what I can decipher from your horrid grammar is that you installed the OTA over your root and now multitouch and tethering don't work.
For right now you're screwed. Should pay attention to the forums when it said to NOT apply the OTA until it was rooted. Oh well. Sorry.

I was thinking more along the lines of Capt. Kirk on the original Star Trek: ""Was rooted....did ota....now...my...phone...doesn't.....work" LOL
ya and just like alot of us he is waiting for scotty to beam us up...
I;m given her all I gots cpt...The froyo is pushing 2.2...anymore and she gonna blow...LOL!!!
You've been here over 2 years and don't know to avoid OTA's or even more pathetically how to ask a question?
not sure how you installed ota over a rooted device. maybe you only rooted with no nand unlock and stayed on stock rom. i rooted and nand unlocked when I first got the phone and went to custom roms, and this would give me an update error of the triangle with the ! in middle when ota updates were released and i tried to install update. don't make it simple, try to give more detail please. there is talk about droid multi touch keyboard not working on 2.2 and talk of no wireless tether working either. it's been said that certian roms with godzsons kernel will get you wifi router to work, but it changes your cam down to 3mp. I have htc ota froyo 2.2 (rooted) odex rom from netarchy and was able to find that a search for wireless tether come up a new version not on the market. search for wireless tether 2.0.5 pre7. If you still have root on your phone, that will give you wireless tether without messing up your cam. good luck
I know this has probably been asked before, and I know that it is probably in the forums but I don't have the actual time to fully search right now. Is it possible to downgrade to an earlier version of android on the Evo, then root? I know when 1.6 was released for the G1 and MyTouch, you could go back down to RC29, exploit the loop and then root with the new 2.1. Any answer, no matter how simple of one, would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, so I have honestly looked every where and read as much as I can.
I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?
Thanks!

On a Serious Note: Is The Search button not working?
On a Side Note: The Noob video needs to be played on login to all members that dont have a post count of at least 40. Even if they signed up before the rule.

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).
Okay maybe I had that coming or maybe I just didn't phrase the question right.
I looked at the page linked above before I posted this and I read it all and still was confused. I guess I am looking for the idiots guide to doing this. I don't feel confident enough on my own.
I DID read, ALOT, and I looked at all the posts that are suggested when posting a new thread.

They are referring to the fact that this thread is for development only. For future reference you can avoid being flamed by posting in the Q&A section.
Don't worry to much about these guys, they lurk and jump at the chance to show off their supremacy over noobs.
Another word of advice would be to hit the thanks button for mtknife for his helpful and humble response.

Alright will do!
I thought the Q&A was for other basic questions. My error.
Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?
I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.
That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.
Give it a shot, you will be fine. Pm me if you have any questions because the mods will probably close this thread soon. Good luck!

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??
The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?
Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.
Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

Agreed, at this point in the game, that's about the only way to brick your phone. It's one of my personal favorite little jokes when clockworkmod asks me are you sure? This cannot be undone! Darn near everything can be fixed thanks to this awesome community!

Thanks to everyone for keeping this going it has helped me so much. One quick question I have installed the ROM and the firmware but I see in the apps things like the blockbuster app and wanted to remove it. I cant seem to uninstall it so I thought it wasn't rooted properly. I tried using Unrevoked3 on it but it failed stating
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
am I forgetting something simple or do I have to try and downgrade the firmware?
Thanks,

I think I recall seeing something about that error on the unrevoked website. I'm out and about right now but I'll check on it when I get home, but in the meantime if you wanna do some digging, I'd start there
ok well I just picked up my new Epic after trading in my awesome (but heavy) Evo 4G. I had no issues rooting, flashing numerous rom's, bootloaders, etc. and now I'm in a new pool!
Since I've always trusted & used XDA for that device, I trust it for this new one as well. So I am looking at the dev sub cat and naturally on page1 there are do it this way, that way, etc. I used unrevoked which naturally won't work for this, so what's the easiest (and / or preferred method) for rooting this device?
I am writing this thread on a macbook, so have access to that as well as a VM of windows xp, win 7 and openSuse, so really any OS.
Looking forward to ROM flashing, testing, whatever direction the group goes, so just like the evo, want to follow the lead from you guys.
Looking forward to the new journey!
Thanks ...
Whsts up nd welcome i had og evo nd evo3d so i know you feel crossing over samsung but honestly its too easy to root lol.just look in dev section theres how to videos nd directions noob prove.pm if any questions.

zedomax or lost kernel would work.
best roms, i like barebone rom the most, but starburst or calks rom is good
If you want to root, use this! Easiest and doesn't add to your ODIN counter

When did this become the Development Question section? Oh wait... We don't have one of those... : facepalm:
Moving this to Q&A....
Removing hands from face, and ever so sorry jerdog for posting IMO a development question in the development forum. In the EVO forums on XDA, anything root related, how-to, mod's, rom's, etc. all fell under there.
Looking at the description of the Q&A it states "For all of your questions relating to the Sprint Epic 4G Touch", then why do I see questions there at all? It should be strictly links to downloads, kernels, themes, etc. but hey, that's just my .02
And ... since I am in the Q&A now, I have it rooted, I tried to restore my titanium backup which I purchased, it did install but not listed in the apps and there is an uninstall (no open) under the market, so that app is installed, just not sure why it's not able to run. I will install a terminal app this am and look for the app to try, but just curious. If TB doesn't run, what is the preferred way/app to remove sprint bloatware, etc.
Also, I assume CWM is the preferred recovery app, same with the EPIC?
I am going to start looking at ROM's, etc. so may have a few more q's down the road (putting them in the Q&A I assume)
Thanks ....
CWM is indeed the preferred recovery. I just started flashing ROM's myself, my favorite so far is the AOSPMod ROM, followed my Starburst.

I agree that this seems to be the best, simplest and safest rooting method... I used this method on my wife's stock phone (she is afraid of modded). Easy as pie. I am not sure about the su version though, as I was not able to update that on her phone....
I read an article earlier today about Sprint putting out ICS at the end of this month (June 30).
On my other phone, it was a huge hassle going back to stock for the ICS update.
So should I just stay with TouchWiz till the end of the month?
So far every prediction and announcement of official ics for this phone has been wrong. If you need root, then go with a rock solid rooted EL29 rom. If you accept an ota of ics, you can't root it. You will have to wait for a pre-rooted build to be released here and flash again. Using sfhub's one click Odin releases, it isn't difficult at all. Just don't be lazy and choose the nodata version. You will most likely have problems eventually if you don't do the full flash version. So many people are wanting help for a multitude of reasons. It usually boils down to do the full version flash and start from the beginning. Also, if you have it, don't be doing titanium backups of gingerbread installs then restoring them in ice cream sandwich, you'll be opening another can of worms with that.
Are you tunning a custom rom or are you rooted now? How difficult was it to root? Have you checked sfhubs thread? Just asking you some questions because honestly rooting and unrooting is probably all of 5 minutes. Also when ICS comes out do you honestly think it won be rooted in minutes. So why stress yourself or start a thread over something you really don't need to worry about... Just Sayin
Stay with stock root with sfhubs method either way its not that big a deal when ICS comes out

I have an HTC Dinc2 ATM. I know how to root it, and try out roms and all that.
But on Monday, when UPS delivers my E4GT, I want to be able to jump right into rooting it and putting a good rom on it so I can spend least time learning how to flash a rom onto it and least time running into mistakes and not be a tad bit familiar with what I'm doing and mess up something.
You're reply is sorta idk... I'm not stressing over anything. I want to unbox it, do everything I need to it, and be able to start using it right away. I just want it to be stable and have ics -even if its stock ota or a custom rom.
Edit: Usually I don't start threads because they end up not answered or someone replies not being helpful but being harsh. I'm just trying to have everything situated right.

OK then just Odin one of the newest stock ICS roms out there. Agat has some nice ones as well if this is what you are looking for but stable for one may not be for others. I run cm9 with lil to no issues but I see other guys complain. Hey inbox Odin the latest ICS and enjoy
