[Q] Replacing the 8mp camera - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if it can be replaced? I found a good deal on a new on, but I am wondering how hard it would be to replace.
I figured I am going to hold on to the EVO until the 3D gets rooted and a few roms, so I'm replacing the screen and the camera (only two things wrong with it)

Are you going to be replacing the entire camera or just like the glass?

The whole camera. I got the phone used and it must have been dropped because the camera takes fuzzy picture, almost like its stuck in macro zoom. It can take really clear close pictures, but anything further than a foot or two is blurry. I have tried every camera, every setting, cleaning the lenses, flicking it, and even dropping it, nothing
So I want to replace the whole camera, I don't know how hard it is.

I don't know how hard it is... but the Sprint repair center changed mine out in less than 15 minutes. So I think it should be easy if you have the tools.

well this is to change the front facing camera but it will help you get to the camera itself
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-HTC-Evo-4G-Front-Facing-Camera/3087/1

It is very easy takes less than 5 minutes

If someone can post up some instructions or a how to, that would be great. I saw ifixit opened the phone completely up, but they don't say if the camera is a simple take off and put a new one on.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

the camera just pops in and out. its just a matter of sliding it out and putting the new one in. I did see a howto, IM on my phone so can't really look for it now.

Cool, if it's just a simple pop in and out I can do that.
I didn't know if it involved any soldering

No soldering required. I would recommend first seeing if you NEED a replacement. Many EVO's with camera issues come in to the service and repair location I'm at. If the lens looks good and clean, but the camera is behaving as you mentioned, my "diagnosis" is the camera just needs to be resat to motherboard. I have seen many cases such as this where I take off the back housing and just "click" the camera back down to the MB and this fixes the issue. This is probably due to impacts.

Thanks man, ill give that a shot when I change out my screen. Who knows maybe ill save 25 bucks.

My Back camera is taking weird...pictures

i have attached a picture i just took... it looks kinda infared,.. kinda with the colors blurried... front works perfectly. running baked snack but this also did the same thing on fresh rom.
i dont see the picture!!! lol
lol just fixed it
hmmm, I was trying to recreate the problem on my phone. It almost looks like a low light shot? Have you tried in other areas of the house with different lighting?
By the way, is that spatula part of your tools or cooking utensils
Edit, also have you made sure your lens is clean and all that?

yeah it's all clean, if you could see the picture on the phone... it looks like 1 of those weak heat showing cameras... where theres red, yellow, orange and then coolest is blue. i dunno wtf it is. i did just get the invisible shield put on it yesterday... but its not covering the lens
lol, you dont have one of the camera effects on do you? while in camera press menu and select the paint pallet thing
there is a clear difference from the front camera to the back camera is the problem. no effects. normal.
hmmm, I said that because when I was messing with mine, the solarize option made it look like the photo you took, different colors depending on light intensity. Maybe try toggling it on and off just to see. Other than that though, I have no clue so I am sorry I could not help!!!
i'm thinking about taking it into best buy and having it checked out, should i flash it back to stock with the RUU before i do so? i can just see one of the geeksquad retards saying "oh it's because you've rooted it" or some BS like that
To be safe I would. Most people say, and I believe, that hardly anyone would notice but I'm paranoid like that. Plus doing an ruu will ensure it wasn't something during the rooting or flashing process.
i have wiped cache, delvic etc.. etc... reset to default settings. still doesn't matter, doesn't matter what rom i use etc.. i am going to flash back to stock and see... i never looked at the camera on stock heh
im thinking the problem is with the invisible shield u installed, it looks like the solvent that comes for the shield might have sipped through the glass covering the lens and gotten directly on the lens itself.
Any recommendations if indeed this could be a culprit? i am assuming the glass on top of the camera just doesn't come off...
i cant think of any solution off the top of my head..i'll try poking around my phone to see if i can find any way around it for you
That picture looks creepy though. Like something from Saw, perhaps.
No you just got the only thermal imaging HTC evo made.... ill buy it.,jk

sorry for bumpin an old thread. but this happened to me tonight. would sprint give me new phone under warranty?
I'd just unroot if rooted, being it to your local corporate store, and they should replace it under HTC warranty
Sent from my Premium MikEVO...yep McDonald's is jealous
I'm having problems with my camera on MIUI too. It either isn't recognized or just force closes. sucks real bad.
The camera is broken, you'll have to unroot, and take it to sprint, or live with it.

Camera sensor defect

See my included pic taken from my evo main camera.
Any thoughts? I really don't want to potentially lose my root but is return the only option?
The defect is a line ~1/3 from the left side and a little less then half way down.
It is not a scratch in the lens and remains regardless of resolution/video/image etc and if you zoom in you can see that it looks like the sensor is has 'dead pixels'
Definitely looks like a physical defect, I would return it
Just back everything up and copy to your PC, since 2.2 is able to be rooted now you should be up and running again fairly quickly.
I was able to get sprint to replace just the camera. Took 5 minutes and now my phone is back to where it should be.

Is it me, or is camera quality really bad?

I just got a HTC Touch Pro 2 (Sprint) and really love it, but one thing that bothers me is the camera.
When I try to take pictures, the picture is VERY blurry and grainy, am I doing something wrong? I tried all of the resolutions and they are all the same. Not to mention, the camera kind of lags when I'm trying to take a picture...
Any suggestions?
Gotta have good lighting ...

Ive noticed sometimes if you take off the back cover and clean the lens on both the back piece and the acctual camera it can make a huge difference. I dont know how long youve had it but if its been awhile, that might help...
The camera is not too good. However it does take decent picuteres if you makesure the lens cover is clean on the outside and inside. some people have suggested removing the plastic piece altogether. there are a whole bunch of threads about it.
What you describe is bad background light. You have some light profiles, so try them. The camera doesnt have much resolution, flash light is absent, but still its more sensible than a nokia from that era.
The lens cover on the back will get scratched and it really makes for some bad pix.
I have a post about this a long while back.
But anyways, take battery cover off and try to take a pic and see how it looks. If you see a improvement buy a new battery cover. Or just the lens cover out of the battery cover. That's what I usually end up doing on all my phones. Sure the real camera lens may gets dust but its glass and its reccessed enough to not get scratched.
Try this and report back

Rear camera LENS COVER ONLY replacement.

So my camera lens isn't actually broken, but the chrome bezel has some nasty scrapes and shows black which is not at all visually appealing. It seems odd to me and must of happened in my pocket before I got my case because there is absolutely zero visible scratches on the phone.
At any rate I ordered a new camera lens cover and while I see some people have done it with relative ease I have yet to see a guide or any sort of good pictures to help in the process. Curious if anyone has any insight but I think I know what to do based on what I saw when I did a tear-down of my phone(I was bored.) So I will update this post with pics/a guide once I receive my replacement in a couple days. Until then any insight on the matter would be appreciated, mainly when dealing with the old pins holding in the lens cover(how to remove?) And fitting the new ones in.

Here are some links I found that maybe helpful.
http://www.gultek.eu/genuine-parts/mid-cover/chassis/samsung/s3-i9300-ceramic-white.html
This link points to another forum where some else is having the same issue.
There's also a video with detailed instructions.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/sams...m/1659774-samsung-galaxy-s3-lens-cracked.html
P.S. I have the same problem. Thankfully it can easily be remedied.
Found one on ebay yay!!!!!!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Housing...A%2BFICS%2BUFI&otn=21&pmod=320956789065&ps=54
Don't get that unless you want to take the lens off of it but it will be hard and possibly damage the lenses(who reason we started!) I bought an OEM lense for $7 after shipping from Hong Kong, taking a while to get here but much easier since there is no i747 back chassis on the market yet
I will try and find a link and repost.
Also that is why what I am talking about is a totally different procedure. I'm talking about replacing the lens(with bezel of course,) not the whole back chassis.

OP - Did you ever get this done? I just cracked the lens for my rear-facing camera.
One option is to replace just the lens, as you have mentioned... if you have had luck, could you please let me know and maybe guide me to your source for the lens itself? I have been unable to find it.
The other option is to replace the camera fully... http://compare.ebay.com/like/150948107141?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar# <-- would this be a viable candidate? It looks like an easy plug and play instead of pulling apart the lens off the camera... and for not a bad price.
Same issue...dropped phone cracked lens and needs replacing
...let me know if u were successful thx

Rear camera not focusing

My problem is exactly what's written in the title. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden the rear camera stopped focusing all together! Goes without saying that I'm pretty upset about it. I did do some mods to the camera that I found here, 1080 60 FPS mod. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. It was working perfectly for a week after.
Is there any way to know for sure if it's hardware or software related? I tried restoring from LG Back-up to a time when the camera worked but that didn't fix it. I'm not sure LG Back-up saves anything related to the camera besides maybe the apk. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want my camera working again so bad!!

Have you tried going into manual mode and adjusting the focus? Just wondering if manual focus has any affect at all, even if it isn't focusing properly.

Yeah I tried and it doesn't seem to do anything. I also noticed my front camera doesn't focus either. I can't remember if it ever did though. Can you check to see if yours does? When I tap to focus the front camera I see a blue box on the screen but it never turns green or changes focus. Front pictures seem to be more or less in focus though.
Sent from my VS986
The fact that the front camera doesn't focus either makes me think it's more software related than hardware. I might try doing a factory reset and seeing what happens.
Sent from my VS986
there's no focus in front camera just a blue box, also it may be stupid but check if the lens is clean, a smudge on the lens can cause the cam to lose focus

You're correct. I checked on my G2 and found it does the same thing. Just a blue box. Well back to thinking it might be hardware. I ordered a new rear camera module. Hopefully that fixes it. I did drop my phone before I started having this problem so maybe I damaged the camera, even though everything else seems to be fine.

Replaced the rear camera today. Found a stock replacement on Ebay for $13.95USD. I'd like to comment on how easy it is to replace parts in this phone! I love it! Compared to the G2, with its multiple boards, antenna wires, and already stressed ribbon cables, this job was a breath of fresh air!
Anyway everything is working perfectly now! So mods can delete this post to avoid clutter or you can leave it as a warning maybe? I dropped my phone from a height of probably 15 inches, even with no visible external damage (thanks to bumper case), the camera was damaged.

Thats more to do with lighting and wb mismatch. see this post on the subject. Magenta is not a hardware problem.

Did you have to update any software after installing the new camera? I'm having the same issue with the camera focusing after a drop but when I installed the new camera the phone wouldn't recognize it...
Had to reinstall the faulty camera again.. I'm not sure if the site I bought the replacement part from sent me a bad part or if there's a step I missed.
I had the focus problem, on the back camera only when in landscape mode...strange right? I tried literally everything to solve a possible software issue with no luck...how did I finally solved it? Replacing camera module. Look no further..
