Hello all and thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.
I followed a lifehacker.com guide called the "always up to date" rooting guide.. Which led me to rooting my HTC T-Mobile G2 using the Visionary method via the XDA Post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
The process seemed to be succesfull, I have updated my ROM with Cyanogen's update-cm-7.0.3-vision-signed.zip, which is incredible, and all seems to be working well. My questions are:
1. Should I be looking in to 'undoing' my root with Visionary as it seems to be depreceiated, and if so how would I do that.
2. What will happen when T-Mobile pushes their officail OTA 2.3 update, which should be any time now.
This is a great time to say thanks to all of the dev's and people who put this stuff out there. Thanks!
Well I wouldn't say you used Visionary to root your phone. I followed same method and G-free was used to root your phone. Visionary was just there to give you temp root access. I'd get rid of Visionary at this point as its of no use anymore and could do more harm than good.
As far as unrooting, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The only situation you may wanna consider unrooting is if you run into some hardware issue and need to get a replacement, and even then its not always necessary. The OTA that is forthcoming is something you probably don't want to mess with. It can be found on this site in the untouched form, but it will unroot your phone and bring stronger security, so you would be unable to root your phone again using the method you used or any of the other widely used methods. I'm not sure if rooted phones actually get official OTAs pushed to them. I had a rooted MT3G and got a notification saying an update to Froyo was coming, but it never got pushed out to my handset. (Which was a good thing)
You don't want to accept any OTA updates if your rooted. The best procedure to follow for root would be in the wiki with "rage" and "G-Free" here is a link to the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Thanks for the reply's and info, I will definitely not accept any OTA updates, and I feel pretty good with this setup. Now on to exploring some ROM features..
Thanks again.

I been waiting forever and not doing any updates due to all the crazy wimax issues. Since the new OTA is rooted would it be safest to update my wimax by running the OTA and re root using the new root method? Please let me know if this isn't the way to go or not. Thanks so much devs for all your hard work. Mod if this is in the wrong section please move.
No, the new root method for the OTA just downgrades everything so you can get access again.
If you haven't done the OTA, I would suggest using the simple root .1 and then flashing something else. The idiot proof guide in the dev subforum is pretty helpful and has a lot of pictures if you prefer that method.
The "How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47..." method is very easy and worked great on my phone. As long as you already have root, NAND unlocked, and the Engineering HBOOT, I would go that route. (see thread for the details, Engineering HBOOT 76.2 is the real requirement.)
Yes I have root and nand. Currently running fresh 0.53. I wasn't sure what was the best method of updating the wixmax. Are the current methods out safe yet? Im comfortable in doing the radio. I was just wondering if the OTA updates the wimax differently from just flashing or somehow. Just a little bit worried of running into wimax issues since I do get 4g in my area.
ok so mainly I am concerned because of all the different root methods out there. I am thinking I would like to perform toast's method with damage control rom.. maybe fresh.
should I be concerned that I have already performed the OTA update to 1.47.651.1 or only not to perform OTA updates after rooting?
is toasts method pretty much the best method for full root? how is that simple root?
what would be the best way to perform a back up on a non rooted phone? should I just spend for that backup pro in the market?
can anyone explain kernels to me? what are they for and why would I need a new one? are there specific kernels for specific roms?
thanks in advance
You need one of the OTA root methods since you installed the OTA
thanks
ok, so if I am correct that just leaves simple root? will this root give me nand unlock, or can i go to toast part 2 after this simple root?
Just use unrevoked 3 it is by far the easiest
I thought unrevoked doesn't give you full root.
Regular unrevoked doesn't unrevoked 3 does but you need a computer for it
i recommend using this method with all instructions step by step make sure you read thoroughly and skip to the section for after ota couldnt attach link so copy paste it
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055 this is a very informative and will root your phone and provide nand. i cant speak for unrevoked since i never used it
unrevoked 3 seems to have some radio issues or something? can these be fixed with the radio flash like with the simple root? still leaning towards simple root...
thanks pocky, looks like i have some more reading to do
I rooted my phone about a week ago... did unrevoked, simpleroot, and none of that #@#$ worked for me. Literally ran on 3 hours of sleep a few days in a row just trying to do them, and then I came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
20 minutes, first try, and boom, rooted, nand unlocked, etc. etc.. It's pretty much the ultimate guide. There are a lot of steps, but, they're all really short and simple. It takes more time to download the files and drivers than it does to root using this method. It's good stuff and I'd highly recommend it.
So I'm finally suppose to get my G2 tomorrow by the end of the day according to the UPS tracking, I got mine free with the promotion deal that ends today. I am not just asking a question without looking for myself, I have been reading about root and how to do it for the past week. I would like to know if I should apply the OTA update before I root it. Should I? I have read about bricking a phone and if your at a certain degree of screwed and you are post OTA, then you are totally screwed. But I don't remember if it was post OTA or after you have applied the OTA. To avoid a total brick, should I apply the OTA or not? Or to keep it simple, should I apply the OTA before I root or not? Or does it not matter?
I am sure if you are getting the phone tomorrow it will already have the update on it. If it has Wi/Fi calling it has the update. You can root with gfree either way. Check out the vision wiki page and it takes you step-by-step.

Yes, I have read the Vision's root tutorial in the Wiki more than 3 times now. But if I were to brick it, would it be safer to be pre OTA or to have already applied the OTA? Because I have read something about if you brick it and are post OTA then you can't fix it with that signed .zip file from HTC. I know that it MIGHT already be pre applied to the phone when I get it but I just want to know which is safer if its not already applied.

You are right if you have 1.19 pre OTA don't apply the update, because if something goes wrong we have a full PC10IMG for 1.19 to restore your phone, we don't have one for 1.22 OTA.

Generally speaking, I would say that you should root the phone before you apply the OTA update.
I don't have a G2, I am on a DZ, so my suggestion is only general.
I accidentally let mine update after I bought it as I hadn't had a chance to read through the rooting guides yet. I actually did the hex edit version revert but I'm not so sure that was even necessary. I've since run gfree on the 1.22 OTA updated G2 with no problems.
I think you would have to be EXTREMELY unlucky to brick your phone with gfree pre or post OTA. This is due to you controlling all that goes to the phone and if it you type something wrong (minus eng hboot of course) it simply won't take on the phone, giving you an error message and you just have to retype it. Really no way to brick if you just want to root and s-off.
Hi guys I have another question and I am thinking I may be able to acheieve re-root by using unrevoked, but I am unsure.
My system:
Version -2.15
PRI -2.15
Software version 5053-651-1
System - 2.3.3
Kernel version - 2.6.35.10-g13578ee
The above is the current information on my phone which has an update available but I haven't performed that task yet. My question I know there is a new root for those which have upgraded to the new gingerbread, but if am correct I don't thing my replace phone has been upgraded yet with the above information listed. Since I knew I was getting a replacement phone i assumed the software info would show it as ver 2.16 which requires the new rooting method? Am I correct in this assumpstion? Also since my system hasn't been updated yet can I still use UNrevoked3 to re-root? I know it seems lenghtly but I was attempting to be clear as possible to get the best answer before I proceeded with either the rooting method or the update.
Only way is for you to root is to use revolutionary.io only way for gingerbread
Should I update my phone before I root then?
Hey,
Yeah you will need to use revolutionary, but dont worry just google it you will get youtube videos walking you how to do it.
No do not update your phone, updates can always patch things and make rooting impossible (Sadface), just jump right in follow the instructions and you will be rooted and flashing roms in no time! just one piece of advice when you are rooted NEVER EVER accept an OTA update otherwise you might just kill your root, or worse D:!
Goodluck my friend! if you need anything just pm me!

You could root then just flash the latest stock rooted rom. Its up to you really I would just root now instead of updating
Yes I too learned that you must root first, a few months ago i accepted the Gingerbread update - mistake. Oh well, now im rooted using revolutionary.io
It was so easy, literally a few settings in the phone, install the driver, start rev.io, plug in your phone, type in your license key, done. reboot and ROM that *****
Happy ROMming
Good afternoon guys,
I have a few set of questions and I will be glad if someone is able to kindly help me out. Please keep in mind that I am not an android expert as far as rooting, custom roms, etc... So I ask for patience from you guys!
Now... into the questions. I got my LG G2 2 weeks ago from Sprint. Great solid phone with killer specs. I previously had a Galaxy Epic 4G Touch. I was looking into rooting my LG G2 phone. However, somewhere in an article online, I read that, if I were to root my LG, I would no longer receive OTA software updates... Like an updated android version for example.. Is that true? I dont care about loosing root after updating. I just dont want to root my phone, receive an OTA update and then mess up my phone.. So thats my first question.
Next... I've done quite a few research online on how to root the G2 from sprint. What i am currently having issues with is finding the drivers. I know I must install them prior to attempting anything else. I read that I could use the Tmobile version drivers even though I am on sprint. But no luck finding those either. Could someone provide me with a link to download the drivers? Thanks! (Windows 8)
And last... I've seen many methods on rooting this device, that at the end, was confused on which one to use. Soo.. could someone share a link of a working method to root the LG G2 from Sprint (Android 4.4.2)
Thank you guys and I will be very grateful for any help. :good:
Any change of the android operating system with ota can fail. They are looking it seems note for any excuse to break the phone if you do anything. Best idea is to make sure you can unroot, then take ota.
Best way to root is go with ioroot25. I believe it is in lg g2 general.

Thank you for your reply.
How would I unroot my G2? Would I use ioroot25? Or is there some type of app that I would have to download? Correct me if I'm wrong, but... Is it possible to unroot with SuperSU ones is installed on your phone after a sucessful root?
Thanks.! :good:
SuperSU can unroot (and temp unroot, though anybodies guess if it'll survive an OTA). There's several other temp unrooters, I often use Hide My Root (try to get some perspective on what the device *actually* works like). Otherwise, removing su, supersu, busybox (if installed) and whatever else until /system looks unmodified works. If there's custom recovery, you (as well as I) probably need to flash that back to stock as well. Or.. quite likely there will be a version around to flash without taking the actual OTA update if there isn't already (haven't checked the other thread). That'll likely be the easiest rather than bother with redoing the work to fix it up again.
Nothing is risk-free of course, but unrooted and flashed back to stock recovery it should be at least fairly unlikely to hurt anything. Of course that's often the stuff I mess up.
