[Q] Case opinions - Xoom Accessories

I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on a case. I've narrowed it down to the roocase, acase, or possibly the bear motion...based on reviews here and other research. I was willing to give Fortte a chance (especially with the extra 30% off) but I contacted them 3 times to ask a question about 2 different cases and still no response. Also got some weirdness when trying to call them directly. Buyer use caution with Fortte, that sent up red flags for me. Anyway...now that some of you have owned them for a while, what are your impressions now? I'm not really interested in the gel cases. I want something I can prop up for long term viewing. TIA

I guess I can't help you if you have narrowed it down to those. I have to ZooGue case and absolutely love it. I liked it so much I bought one for my wife's iPad and she loves hers as well. Everyone I have shown it to has decided to buy one.
The downside is that it is one of the thicker cases but I will take the extra protection vs going for slim. It is completely adjustable for different viewing angles. My only issue is Moto's stupid decision to put the charging port on the bottom of the unit as this makes it pretty much impossible to keep plugged in and have it propped up at a good angle. Hopefully someone will come out with a right-angle adapter that is small enough not to put too much pressure on the charging port, but this is a Xoom design issue, not an issue with the case.
The WORST decision I made was buying the Motorola case when I bought the XOOM, it is a worthless pile of crap. At steep angles the XOOM slides out of the case, whoever approved that design should be fired.

I was considering the zoogue case. I'd prefer a thin form factor though. Only reason I was really considering the roocase is because it does come with a sleeve as well.
I originally wanted the Motorola case thining that surely they would have designed a perfect case for their own product...until I started reading the horrible reviews on every site I looked at.
I agree with the power cord issue. Kind of a pain to be charging it and use it at the same time. However...the one thing I really love about this thing is that it only takes about an hour to charge and the battery life is freakishly long. I got slammed a couple weeks ago at work and couldn't really find time to play with my new toy so it sat on my desk for a few days without turning it off. I thought for sure the battery was dead, but it wasn't. Lasted for about 5 days that way, even with the wireless turned on!

Acase is awesome. Still slides out when propped up. I put two egips in a good position though which made it stop sliding. Can't see them either. Great idea.

I've tried the Moto portfolio, Zoogue and Acase. Acase wins out. When you consider the price it makes it even more of a no brainer. Acase is form fitting, easy to use daily and looks good. Zoogue is great but ugly. Yes it is rock solid but it adds tremendous bulk, the velcro on the outside just detracts and the back of the case does not follow the Xoom's form.
Zoogue's pros may outweigh the cons for some people and thats fine. I'm just saying as an all around good case at a great price (I paid $22) you cant beat the Acase.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I went ahead and ordered an acase. I think for a slim profile that can be carried around all the time it was just the better choice for me. I'll definitely take the advice of putting something non-slip in the grooves. Thanks for the heads up on that JG!

What a shame that its coming out now, about 2 weeks until the EVO is dead (to me anyways). As someone who sells cases, I have no idea what takes these companies ::cough:: otterbox ::cough:: so long to bring these products to market. Dummy phones are available months prior to release in most cases. Extended battery cases I can understand taking longer but almost a year? No. I would of bought one of these 6 months ago. If I order now it probably won't be here until I get the Evo 3D anyways.
edit: holy crap. think they are charging enough for this? considering the only part I need is the rear section (I have the front piece and silicone from my cyclops and a battery) no way would I spend that on this.

Yea +1 on the timing point. they are actually suppose to create an option to buy just the backing for those that purchased a cyclops. But question how is the silicon on the cyclops is it always coming off like some people say ?
Hello
I just get an extended battery for my iphone from the web.
http://www.papadigitals.com/dsl-series_htc-battery-charger.html
There is some case and standard battery for HTC
I agree the timing stinks but I think this one is a better option than the powerskin. You can actually see the kickstand with this one.

Amen to this comment.
As an owner of the powerskin (VERY FLAWED DESIGN, read my review on this site) and this Trident case, the Trident so far is the winner.
I received the Trident (although to the wrong address than indicated) yesterday. I was luckily home to collect it. I put the cover/battery combination on the Evo and charged it up. I'm not sure how many recharge cycles it's meant to go through before it stays charged, but so far, after one night on the wall charger, it kept a charge for one subway trip from home to work (about 35 minutes) at about 90%. So, pretty much discharged 10% in 35 minutes. I think this may be due to the newness of the battery, however, I would have expected better from the size of the battery (purported) by the company.
I'll post a more thorough review after about a week of use.

I can't comment on the seidio thing, stopped buying their defective products years ago. I'd check the dimensions of this case against the dimensions of the seidio extended battery.
the case itself is a two-part clip on:
Back part is see through (got the icy version), clips on to the front part which has a screen protector already as part of the front.
The entire thing is wrapped in a separate rubber covering that you put on after snapping the case together. The thing itself feels very nice. I don't know about the battery life, will figure it out after a few days or week's use.
The bottom part has a flip-open cover for the battery cable and other inputs.
all the buttons are accessible because adding the plastic snap on makes everything a bit recessed, these guys thought of that as well. It is a nice touch.
All-in-all, the case is very strong. I'm not at all worried about the device dinging up.
If possible could anybody that gets one of these let us know if it will fit in any of the hip holsters? I have a holster that got with my innocase extended combo and I have another holster that came with one of the ebay cheapo specials.

okay that does sound goood i shall check it up against the specs. one more question i keep hearing ppl with the cyclops saying the the rubber ring that protects the sides of the cases comes off and on when pulling out of your pocket true or false ? and how much bulk does this case actually add from the pictures it looks kind of sliming. But, i personally cant trust pictures after the deception of the powerskin.
Once again, I think this case is a thinker version of the Cyclops which I have. Great case and VERY secure but not too pocket friendly. The stickiness of the silicone bumper makes it annoying to slide in and out of tight places. But in all honestly, this case is pretty freaking sweet. The upgraded screen protector is much nicer and I believe all the cases come with an extended audio jack since it is now recessed because of the case. If I were in the market I would definitely buy the Electra!
I have this one and the original. The rubber thing has never came off, in fact it is hard to take it off. The case is wonderful and only a tad bigger than its original. The battery is good as its been up over 60 hours and awake for 12 hours with no mods.

There are videos of the bb and ipad.
But honestly, what's ur alternative?
Almost 100 bucks? Now I need a case to protect my Otterbox.
i have one of this case from Kevikev http://kevikev.com/addtocart.sc it only cost be abot $35 back when i got it. believe it or not it is a lot more of a professional looking case and very stylish. i can walk into work with it, or even church. with the otterbox case i'll look like a construction worker. or someone who work with a lot of kids and don't want my xoom to damage. and honestly i don't see the extra protection in the otterbox case. cuz i won't be droping my xoom anytime soon. and so the case is mainly to serve as a stand and a jacket for the device. not a bullet proof.
i also just came across this from the walmart site. it actually look similar to otterbox, obviously not as strong from the looks of it, but design wise it is very similar without the hard screen cover/stand for the otterbox. check it out, if i do seem to find more information on it, i'll give it a try, they also do a free site to store, so yo can pick it up at your local walmart for free. and it only cost $14. maybe a couple dollars extra for tax. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Amzer-Transparent-Jelly-Case-for-Motorola-XOOM-Black/16539974

If you're fine with putting a $600+ tablet in a standard folio case just because you're worried about what people with think when they see you with it, then have at it. Personally I want a case to PROTECT my device and I don't care what other people think about it's appearance. It's known that the otterbox cases add a little bit to the size, but the protection they are known to afford the devices make up for that.
I had a standard plastic shell case on my phone and after I dropped it onto asphalt getting into my truck one day it broke apart. The phone was undamaged so I was lucky. I got an otterbox case after that and I don't freak out now if I drop the phone (which I have a few times) because I know it's not going to get damaged. I have the standard motorola folio case and have been waiting for this one to come out so I can stop worrying about dropping my xoom. I'm not going to buy it from otterbox though because I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere.
The one from walmart is just a silicone case. The otterbox is a polycarbonate shell with a silicone case around it. BIG difference there in the protection. Even in the name is says "transparent JELLY case".

i obviously bought my case becasue i like it. not becasue someone said to buy it. you seem to have miss the point. by stating that the case is a professional and stylish case was my opinion based on my needs. and for my job, the otterbox case is just not going to cut it, also my opinion. and FYI, the cases i have do "PROTECT"t my device so it wouldn't matter what people say including you. my point that the case will me look like a construction worker, was also my opinion. becasue it goes to fact that if i work consruction i would want the extra protection. i don't drop my xoom, like you have. so the extra wight and looks is not my style.
otterbox cases was made for folks who want maxumum protection, i for one had an otterbox case when i had an iphone. it was worth it then, becasue i could drop my phone often. but my XOOM will not be tasting the floor anythime soon, becasue i am very carefull with it. unlike a phone i have no reason to have it on my lap when driving and will never forget it's on my lap before i get out of the car, i have made that mistake with my phone several time.
as for the case on walmart, i was just giving an alternative for a cheaper case for those who will want otterbox but can't spend that much. that's why it's cal;l alternative. it cost less, and it will obviously not be the same as the otterbox case. as i said in that post it looks similar in design, but obviously not the same strenght. otterbox do have their customer market, like you. which is not a bad thing, it's just not a one size fit all. some people like me don't have the need for an otterbox case, because i also bought my xoom the looks. i like how it feels and it's design. so i want to enjoy that.
that's why i laught when i see people with the ipad2, saying it is so light and thin, but they have it cover in an otterbox case that makes it looks and feels like the original ipad.to me it;s like why did you buy it based on how thin it was, only to put it ina bullet proof jacket. and i mean let;s face it, a couple yes from now, when there is a xoom 2 or even xoom 3, you know you'll be wanting to get that one as well. and will likey pass this on to someone or sell it. technology is leap year ahead. so there will always be the next generation product.
otterbox did build a name for themselve with good quality product. it was popular with alot of people, mostly teenager, who don't want their summer paycheck to go in breeze with one drop. so ennjoy your otterbox case my friend, i was just stating my opinion, i wasn't dogging otterbox. it's just not a one size fit all. and some people like me bought my xoom for the look as well as the brain. and looks does matter in the tech world. that's why everyone want to make the pretty phones, thin, big screen, shiney cover, and all tht good stuff.
i bet you won't be buying a old IBM laptop over an HP or Apple. cuz you want the pretty choice not the big and bulky IBM. you want the thin and lightweight next generation laptop. same thing with cars and just about everything else. so let's face it looks matters. and it's not about how others view it, it's about how you will like it, cuz you the one that's gonna spend the most time with it.

Your exact words were "i can walk into work with it, or even church. with the otterbox case i'll look like a construction worker. or someone who work with a lot of kids and don't want my xoom to damage". That says you don't want it because it will make you LOOK "like a construction worker" to your coworkers and church members. If you don't care, then it shouldn't matter.

I never said I dropped my Xoom. I've dropped my cell phone and there have been times where I've worried about dropping my Xoom, but I have never ACTUALLY dropped it. My point is that if it offers more protection I could care less if other people (including yourself) think it would make me look like a "construction worker". I've never received those opinions about my phone and I doubt anyone would make the same opinion about my Xoom were it in an otterbox. Now, if it had bright yellow markings on it and was much heftier than it is, I could see someone saying it looked like it belonged on a construction site.

I don't see how something that is completely different from the otterbox would be an alternative to it. That's like saying any other case out there on the market is an alternative to the otterbox. Sure they may be alternatives to "cases" in general, but they're not good alternatives to the otterbox unless they are similar in design. Now if you linked to a cheaper shell case with a silicone outer case instead of just a simple silicone case, there would be no argument that it would be an alternative to the otterbox.
otterbox do have their customer market, like you. which is not a bad thing, it's just not a one size fit all. some people like me don't have the need for an otterbox case, because i also bought my xoom the looks. i like how it feels and it's design. so i want to enjoy that.

Which is the same reason someone buys an iPad. I bought mine for function over form. You can take a piece of **** and put a pretty bow on it and it's still going to be a piece of ****. The Xoom, on the other hand, is a pretty slick device inside and out so even if you buy it because of "the looks" then you're still getting a good device.

Actually I wouldn't buy any of those, but I wouldn't buy an "old" anything. I would never consider buying an apple laptop because they charge too much for what you actually get, and I have never really liked hp laptops. Even IBM knows that lighter is better because laptops are more portable as ever these days and with competition between laptops/netbooks/tablets they have to keep up. Their new lenovo laptops aren't the big ol bricks they used to be. I buy for the purpose I need it for. If I'm going to have a laptop I never take away from the house I would go for something like an alienware or XPS system that aren't the lightest things in the world, but they're powerful. When I was in the military I had a panasonic toughbook and loved it. Damn thing was almost bulletproof just on it's own. I would prefer to have the whole package of form AND function, but if I had to choose between an old datsun 280Z that ran like a dream and a brand new nissan Z that could barely go into gear/had no stereo/transmission falling apart I would go for the 280z that ran. I will choose function over form any day as long as it gets the job done.
My last post was a little off topic, so to be a litter more ON-topic XD if they sold a commuter case as well I would be all over it. For anyone that doesn't know the difference, the commuter case has the silicone around the device and the poly shell on the outside instead of the other way around with the defender. It seems like the commuter cases are only made for phones though.
lol..you are such a fun guy to chat with. you broke it all down. which i like. however to all your point as stated it is simply opinion. by me saying i can walk into work or church is my opinion. and i'll say this otterbox on a phone doesn't look bad, becasue of the form factor. it is small and not as obvious as it would be on a xoom. that's why i can quickly pick u when someone has an ipad2 with the bullet proof jacket on. and so you might not have gotten the construction worker comment, becasue people wont say that to you, especially after when they don't know the device you have. ie. i have had aye people as me if my xoom was the ipad. the look on my face usually answer the question.
but i'll tell you man, when i see the otterbox on a tablet (so far only the ipad i've seen) it reminds me of constructon worker doing survey in the field, and that's just a picture in my head, which i not a bad thing i should say. there is nothing agains construction worker. it could easily be one of those at&t workers on a poll connecting telephone wires, or a comcast cable guy doing connection test. those are the target market for otterbox. not that they don't appreciate you the regular folk buying their product. but they are targetting a different market with those bullet proof jacket.
Otterbox
Got my otterbox for xoom and installed it:
Pros:
Great protection
can dock without removing case
access to power button with and without outtershell attached.
well built
can power without removing from case
ports are wellsealed
Cons:
the outer shell design adds too much thickness via excess space (see comparison pic between iPad I and Xoom Otterbox case.
Outer shell squishy due to excess space.(poor design)
1st pic outer shell on Xoom. So much space you can see through it
2d pic outer shell on iPad nice and sleek (looks good)
3rd pic side by side comparison

Any ideas how you would redesign it to remove the excess space? I'm assuming that space was put there on purpose to accommodate for something else.
i think the space is to prevent any damage to the screen by scratching. because the cover has parts that prop it up to make a stand. that could be a reason. but i don't have one, so i can't be sure. but we'll find out soon.

[Q] Quality Cases?

does anyone know if seidio or otterbox have any plans on releasing a case for the trophy?
I just ordered one by Incipio. Hopefully it's pretty decent.
any update if you got your cases in. would like to know a good case.
I just ordered the Incipio Silicrylic case for my Trophy. I can't post the link to it because I'm forum n00b lol.
I'll report back when I get it, but there's a good chance I won't get it until I get back from taking a graduate course next week. I'm leaving on Sunday, and with the free shipping, it might not come until on Monday or later.
In my opinion it's on par with case manufactures like Seidio and Otterbox. This is my first Incipio product and i like it. Had it for over a week now. The silicone is nice and soft, doesn't attract too much lint or dust and it wipes clean better then other silicone cases. It's very tight fitting so theres no movement at all which is good when comparing to cases like the Seidio Innocase surface which will cause little micro scratches on your phone once dust or dirt gets between the case and the phone.
It also comes with a free screen protector which was a nice touch. Kinda expensive at $29 but definitely worth it to protect your investment. Free shipping was good, and it my case took 4 days to arrive from California to NJ.
Another thing to note is that the case definitely makes the buttons easier to press. They seem more defined now, volume buttons act like separate up and down buttons instead of one long rocker. Power and camera buttons are easier to find and press as well. The holes are also nicely designed for the headphones, mic and charger. Most hard cases I've used have slacked in that ares. the charger port is always undersized and most of the time requires you to take the case off to charge the phone.
I have 5 cases for my Evo 4G and if Incipio made a Silicrylic for that phone I would use it over the other cases i have hands down.
Thanks very much for the review and the pics! I'm also in NJ, and I ordered mine on Monday, so I'm hoping I get it by Friday then... I'm glad to hear the the buttons are more defined; the one review on their website said the same thing.
Looks good, think i might buy one. I usually dont case phones, but this one seems kinda hard to hang onto.
Okay, perhaps I'll get flamed for this because it does not fit someone's definiton of "quality" - but I wanted to share that I am blown away by the fit and quality of the Ebay $8.49 case I bought for my Trophy. It does in fact feel a bit rubberized and fits perfectly.
And - while playing, my son dropped the phone from about 3 feet, on the street. I heard the sound of something falling apart and had that sinking feeling. When I looked - the case popped apart, but the case and the phone are completely undamaged and after popping it back on, it is as if nothing happened.
I am okay with that!
The case I got was this:

I would hope there wouldn't be any flaming! That case looks good to me. I'm glad it worked for you in a time of need lol
I took a few photos so you can see the fit of the Ebay case I mentioned:
And the back:
I've always like the Silicrylic cases I've had for my other phones and since my local Verizon stores (corporate and agent) have absolutely nothing for the Trophy, I may bite the bullet and spend 30 bucks on the Incipio case. I just kind of wish the acrylic part came in different color choices for a little extra 'flair'...
Wow, I'm a dingbat. I see the different color options now... Not that many, I have to say. Perhaps I'm a little too anal retentive, but a blue on black color scheme would match my device theme.
Has anyone gotten anything from Boxwave? They seem to have some decent looking cases but they seem a bit steep. I've never had any of their products before so I'm unfamiliar with them.

Yeah, I have purchased some power supplies and cables from them. It was all a decent quality product. I would buy from them again.

Nex Fishbone Case Thoughts/Pics

Just thought I'd share some thoughts and pictures of a new case I got (I am a bit of a case junkie... usually end up with 10-15 cases per phone). Typically I either wouldn't be the first to post about a case (so I don't bother) or I don't feel strongly enough to share. I didn't see anything about this case, though... so here goes.

Various colors are available.
Notes: My device is the Verizon/LTE variant. This is a 2 piece case (black silicone base and red fishbone part).
Looks: I really think the case looks great, the pictures below won't do the colors justice but the black is a very nice matte black and the red is a very cool shade. The design is appealing, of course, or I wouldn't have purchased it... heh.
Fit: The fit is nearly perfect (might actually be perfect, this is the first time I'm ordering this style of case). One of the... ribs has a teeny tiny slight gap between it and the black base. It is not highly noticeable and I couldn't capture it well in a picture... but it's there.
I don't know if this is related to my phone being the VZW version.I don't know if this gap will go away as the case "settles in" since it is pressed down easily and doesn't feel too tight.I don't know if the case will fit with the extended battery, but since I have the extended battery at home I will test it out and report back.
Feel: I really like the feel of the red part on my hand when I'm holding it. It's not any extra grip or anything, but it is comfortable. The side grippyness is sufficient to not be slipping out of your hand, but it's not as grippy as many other cases that have a more textured design.
Function: The lip is sufficient to protect the screen when face down. The only thing I don't really like about the case is that the button parts aren't super noticeable by touch. Don't get me wrong, they work perfectly and you can feel them just fine when you are trying to, but when I am not paying attention I find myself not being certain where they are for a moment or two. I will probably get used to this, though.
Hope that gives everyone the info they're interested in... if you have questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks for the write up and pics. That case looks awesome. Curious if it would fit with the extended battery. Hope to hear back from you about it.

I tried it with the extended battery...
The silicone part fits perfectly, the fishbone part is a little close but does fit too.
The... spinal parts at the top on the back are slightly raised. Just a bit, only an issue if you are pretty nit picky... But it definitely fits and the clips/ribs and top/bottom fit perfectly.
Happy to confirm that the slight gap on one of the ribs has gone away over night. The case fits perfectly now (regular battery). Still fits good, but not great with the extended battery (might improve if left alone over time).
Thanks again. I might check into getting one of these on payday. The price isn't too bad even if I end up not liking it.

No problem... good luck if you decide to buy it, hope you enjoy it. I myself am a case junkie. I've only had the Galaxy Nexus for 2 weeks and have 6 cases and I still have 20 or so for my last phone (Epic 4G Touch).
How is the silicone? Is it a dust/lint magnet and is it a chore to get out of medium to snug fitted pants?

No issues getting it in and it of pockets (even the tighter "cell phone pockets" a couple of my pants have).
It does acquire a bit of dust like you'd expect, but FAR less than most silicone cases I've had (guessing because a lot of it is covered/broken up by the fishbone part).
I tend to be pretty nit picky and with this case I do not feel the constant urge to clean it.
How "protective" would you say it is?
Just ordered a nexus and am looking at cases my primary concern is protection, although I want a cool look too.
How do you think this would compare to come of the other cases in terms of protecting against drops? I figure a self-described "case junkie" might be the person to ask this sort of comparative question to
Ok, so this is all just my opinion... I'm not dropping my phone on the ground to support this, lol.
Both pieces (the silicone case and the red fishbone that locks it into place and secures it) are pretty secure and well made. The lip around the face is a good size (not so tiny that it is insignificant and not so big to cause usage issues).
I won't sit here and pretend I have a rating system for this stuff, but I have some cases that feel like they won't protect anything beyond it sliding around the desk or a gentle fall onto some clouds/carpeting and some cases that feel like they will do their drop and protect it from a moderate drop and fall. This case falls into the latter/better group.
I like the appearance, but not so much that I'd use it if it was a piece of crap. Thankfully, it seems well made to me.
Woah
what struck me on first glance is the design!
Its quite eye catching
I'm just not sure if it is durable...
This look good. I bought one

To case or not to case. That is the question.

So I am really torn. With my old phone I had a case originally, but I would swap batteries twice a day, plus I could never dock it in the car (since I had a dock made for my phone), or on my desk.
I am guessing with this phone I would not be switching batteries as regularly as I am now, but I still have the home/car dock issue. What do you guys think???
You can think of cases/screen protectors as insurance. In the end, it's up to you. But, one accident is all that is needed to ruin the phone.
I plan on getting a case, but my situation is going to be slightly different than your's. I have no issues with the dock situation.
Trust me, case up. I dropped my galaxy s3 and it smashed into tiny pieces. It wasn't insured so I was screwed.

The phone will be too valuable for me to drop. I seem to drop them from time to time. I will have some kind of case (bought 2 already).
As far as the battery switching, with the 3100mAh batt and resonably long life as reports elsewhere, I think you won't be de-casing nearly as often.
My present iPhone (gasp) has an otter case. Taking apart the 2 part casing to change batts would really get old fast.
Once you drop a phone in a parking lot, you learn to slap a case on it as soon as possible.
Otterbox JUST came out with the iPhone 5 case this week (or maybe late last week). That is a longgggg time to not have a case if the same trend goes with the Note 2.
Samsung TPU Case
I grabbed one of the actual Samsung branded TPU cases. First time I've ever bought an OEM case. It's a very, very slick case. Feels nice in the hand, doesn't add bulk and has a raised from edge. It's a bit pricey at 30$ and the only complaint that I have right now is the AUX hole isn't that big so a bulky connector still means I have to remove it.
Other than that, the grey on grey looks glorious.
I have never cased my phones. I've always used a horizontal to carry the phone on my belt. My S and SII have both been dropped several times and the only issue I have had is scuffing and nicks on the edges. Amazingly they help up better than I would of thought. The hip case has always worked well for me and provides good protection. But once the phone is removed from the case it up to you to keep it protected.
I'm planning on picking up a note II and have picked up a horizontal case for mt belt and a case with a bumper around the edge and a flip cover. I'm afraid the case my make the phone a little thicker than I'd like and am looking for an additional case with a slim profile bet also covers the back and edges.
The note II being a large phone, with a little more weight and a large surface area I'm thinking a case would be a good idea. I'd say a nice minimalistic case that is easy to remove is the way to go.
