[Q] Problems in Applying Themes on My Epic 4G - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hate to bother you guys, but apparently I am doing something wrong. I have searched and read and searched and read and cannot find my problem.
I rooted my Epic 4g using the following process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074324.
I then installed the following ROM (the standard version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976194.
I followed this with an attempt to install several themes, one of them being the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1024378.
The theme applies, but the background does not appear on all of my screens, such as in the background of the program pages. Also the icons that are pictured on the theme do not appear there.
Am I doing something wrong here or have I failed to understand the process. Thanks for your consideration.

Wipe cache and dalvik. The theme you posted doesn't work for some.
Sent from a fully stocked bakery with green robot workers.

I actually wiped both the cache and dalvik 3x each.

Seems to me like you're doing everything right, maybe try re-downloading the theme or try a different one to see if the results are the same.

Are you on ec05?

I just came over from Windows Mobile, so I am very new to Android and all the terminology. I am trying to read and understand, however. How would I know whether I am on EC05 or not? I do know that I am using the standard ROM from this SRF and not the Touchwise version.

I was also wondering if it was possible that the rooting process did not completely take. Can that happen? If I have "superuser" in my programs, does that mean that the rooting was completely successful? Or is there another way to tell that my phone has been fully rooted.

I haven't tried that theme so I wouldn't know of issues, but to check for ec05 go to settings - about - baseband version. That will tell you. You have superuser and the best way to test your root, imo, is to run android terminal emulator and type "su", no quotes of course, and it should ask to allow super user rights and hit yes the command prompt will show a # symbol. The app is free from the market. Android terminal emulator by Jack Palavich. You can also open titanium backup and it will tell you. Afterwards open the su app and you should a list of allowed programs. Hope that helps!

Thank you very much, you guys have been extremely helpful. It turns out I do have EC05 ROM and when I opened Titanium and then went to "su" it listed it and a three other programs there on the first screen. That's great. I will try some other themes. Maybe the one suggested by Overstew.

Black status Bar??

Does anybody know how to change the status bar from plain white to black?? And I'm looking to do this without adding a launcher..Any help?
I asked the same question in Enom's themed rom thread. You have to change certain system settings if i'm not mistaken. His manup themed rom that runs off the sd card has a black notification bar. It would be amazing if we can change it via a script or something.
i used 2 change the status bar on my g1 2 black whenever the roms had the normal white one. you have to edit the 'framework' (i think thats what it was called) files in a zipped rom file. that was the way i would change them at least.
i havent tried on my g2 even tho i do have temp root. just really havent bothered really and i think it would return 2 the white one after reboot even if the rooting takes place at reboot. dont take my word for this cuz i havent tried but... i dunno... the white one hasnt bothered me much yet. lol.
There are many threads on this. Two main ways use enomthrs manup rom or use metamorph. Both ways have instructional threads in the G2 forums... just search

Lookup busybox installer, it's by the same dev as metamorph. That should fix your problem with starting it up. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the morphs to apply though. At the end of every theme install, it syas "reboot required". I know I obviously can't do that because it would be erased, but I tried a "hot" reboot and it didn't work either. I think it's because everything needs to be de-odexed. If that's the case then no themes.
**facepalm**
Click yes. It does a hot reboot not a full reboot.

Well I clicked yes and nothing happened. Actually, the same popup asking if I want to do the reboot again, each time I click yes it pops up again. I tried my script I use for a hot reboot as well as a market app and neither time did the morph apply. Unless I'm missing something then I don't think it works.
It works.... just not great. Try a complete reboot, run visionary, then metamorph, then hot reboot, then all your scripts, then hot reboot (if your scripts require). That's how my setup works everytime from a full shutdown.
I've been using various nexus one metamorphs lately, cool stuff. FYI, the LG Optimus launcher works flawlessly on this phone, that too was also ported and is in the nexus one theme section

One click root deleted files without rooting my phone?

So I ran one click root (done it before flawlessly), and it gave an error message saying it couldn't find "free hd demos". So i restated my phone and my computer and ran it again, and this time it said it couldn't find asphalt, and sure enough it was gone! I then ran a terminal emulator to see if my phone was rooted, but it wasn't. Now what do I do?

Yes the one-click removes a couple apks, including aspahlt. It doesn't matter to the one-click if it finds them or not. It doesn't hurt anything to remove them or for them to not even be there when it is run, it will still go through the root process.
Once it you are rooted, you should see a program called SuperUser in your drawer. If you think the one-click didn't work, try it again.

Yes but I heard that if you delete the stock apps off your phone it becomes unable to receive updates

It stops from getting "over the air's" not the one-click
Just try again. I had to run it like 5 times yesterday, although that was mosty user error
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Chances are you're rooting to go to a custom rom so updates aren't a good idea anyway. (You used to lose your root, and a whole new exploit needed finding, but I don't know of that's the case anymore)
Once an update hits custom roms will start having it worked into them within a couple days, sometimes in a couple hours, and they'll maintain root, and all that stuff.

[Q] A lot of apps missing in market

I loaded CM 7.0.2.1 Supersonic & A LOT of apps are missing like USAA, Groupon, Amazon, Etc. How do I fix this? What would cause this? I'm new to flashing so I'm stumped at this point.
I have tried the "Fix" file, i have tried downloading apps through diff. markets, i have tried a diff market.apk, and i have tried clearing my cache and wiping my phone. please help.
Sorry, don't know the answer, but this is the proper place to post questions for future reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=652
or in the thread of the ROM you are having an issue with.
Don't know the answer either, just wanted to say cheers to jstalford for not being a jerk. Hopefully others can learn that when redirecting people to the appropriate forums you can do so without being rude.

anyway, i dont remember if CM 7 has fastboot... if so, disable it. should be under app/development settings.
I play with aosp/GB sometimes, and I've noticed some of the apps I use aren't in market, and wont even install thru TB. I just chalked it up to GB incompatibility.
But I'm no expert.

You'll run into that from time to time, some devs havent updated the app for gd compatiblity yet.
That is a feature that google made. It detects what android version you have and what phone. it then filters out incompatible or blocked(e.g. A thunderbolt only app in market) apps. Its their own way to promise you that any app in the market(which arent filtered out) will run on your device.
CM7.0.2.1, all apps listed by OP appearing in market. User error. Most likely didn't format /system or something.
Screenshots attached as examples. Flashed ROM, Gapps, a custom Font, and Tiamat Kernel. Booted up, used T-Mobile theme chooser to change to one of the other included themes. That's it for the modifications.

I'm on Fresh 4 (GB) and I'm getting the same results you are, but I'm not getting (for example) MLB At Bat.
Can you search for MLB At Bat and see if it shows up?

[Q] 2 problems: System Update and Swype

Sending from my phone.
Problem #1: I'm running RandomRom EI22 and I've done every step to prevent the System Update message, however it's still popping up. Definitely made sure I erased the systemupdate apk and everything else. What other methods are there to make it stop being such a nuisance?
Problem #2: I uninstalled regular Swype and installed the beta, ever since the original kept asking for a system update. After installing the beta, it worked fine. Now everytime I try, it keeps saying "Try again".

Do a search here on "FOTAKill.apk" - that was the only thing that helped me on both my phone and my wife's - but we are on Froyo so this might not work for you.
With that being said, all of what you tried has been suggested for Froyo users also, but didn't work - so give it a try. Sometimes the search on XDA doesn't seem to work well for me - so what I do is use Google, and in the search terms I type "XDA FOTAKill.apk"
You have to edit your build.prop to say 2.3.6 and EL30 in all places where it says EI22 and 2.3.5. Then reboot.

I mentioned what has to be done before. Build.prop has to be edited.
Sorry, thought I mentioned that I did. My fault.
Yes, I did edit the build.prop file through Root Explorer, per your advice. Even after I did the final editing (missed a couple), the message still popped up. But, that's when I did the cache clearing and it didn't pop up again upon reboot.

If you are on a MTD rom, someone in another thread suggested going back to regular swype. You can get the appropo files from the Starsky ROM, this is one of the few MTD roms that uses swype still, and the only files that I found work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242335
system/app/swype.apk
system/lib/swypecore.so
I pushed using Root Explorer and got mine working again
The 'Android Update to EL30' is not removed by uninstalling system updates.apk that apk is meant to provision your Epic to Sprint. The Update Notification is caused by the 'Google Framework' Service. There may be ways to fool it, such as the buildprop edit suggested.

[Q] getting stuck at su on root

I have searched and gone threw all of the steps, I have tried all of the versions of SU for my phone and keep getting the standard.
Model: SGH-T989

I have followed this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 and tried Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/
everything goes great until running the SU file from recovery and it errors as cannot install, tried with signature mode on and off with no luck
Any help would be great

I swear... I just talked about this... somebody needs to update the OP in the guide..
Or a mandatory tutorial one must watch upon signing up for forums explaining what a search bar is used for.....

if you see my notes I did a search and which tutorial I was using but, I agree it would be helpful if the tutorial was updated.
BTW I had to create a new user name since i cannot login to my old profile that I had on here since I was hacking and sporting an t-mo MDA.
