Stuck on big red M. I do everything like it say on installing CM7 6 beta. 2ndinit 1.6 maybe blame?
When I selected default boot "normal", instead on 2ndinit then it boot original 2.2 LOL
Can somebody explain that, I did absolutely everything it say on installing CM7 faq thread.
After installing sbf let it boot if it does not boot wipe data. root with superoneclick, reboot phone install 2nd init reboot too boot menu select custom recovery wipe data then install cm7 then gapps reboot. First boot can take up to 10 min. This should work.

I'm having the same issue (I'm about 3 below you) I go through the whole process as you did and get stuck at the m (mines not red though) same as you I'm thinking 2ndinit is the culprit. So of any one has 1.4 please post!

Sorry. I'm just paniking for the fact my phone is stuck on the boot screen and I'm jusst trying to get help asap. And actually the other thread was about if my phone was rooted so this thread is on another topic.
Are you still able to boot into recovery? And if so, what is displayed in your screen?
So I took the battery out, put it back in.. held power and the volume button it took me to where it says s-off n did a system recover. It worked!!! Haha... now I wanna try again but can u tell me what I did wrong??? I downloaded the cyanogen 6.1.1 and just started it up with the google stuff. It rebooted did its thing n stayed at the boot screen... am I supposed to clear something?? I read somethin like that when I was on google with my gfs phone. (I'm out somewhere... made me panik more since I don't have access to a computer atm)

Which version of ClockworkMod are you using?
Since you trie to flash a CM6.1. rom (which is froyo, android 2.2 based) you must use a ClockworkMod 2.5.x or below (or compatible).
And did you install Engineering HBoot? Sorry for asking, but it's unclear to me what you exactly have been doing already.
I did the visionary/gfree root last night without the hboot. And I tried the cyanogen 6.1.1 which was suggested by another user on here in one of my threads.

Btw my clockworkmod says 3.0.0.5
Whatever version that was on the market is the one I downloaded.

Apart from the fact that it seems to me that you skipped a step (hboot), which you have to perform , you are also trying to flash a 2.2 rom with the wrong recovery. Try with the 2.5 version in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=898151

First of all, flashing the engineering HBOOT is not required unless you want to use fastboot on your computer. Also, if you used ROM Manager to flash ClockworkMod Recovery, that version is supposed to support both 2.2 and 2.3 ROMs. It was only the beta version of the recovery that was on this forum that only supported 2.3 and not 2.2---unfortunately, it was also labeled 3.0.0.5 and caused lots of confusion).
As far as why you are stuck at the boot screen, did you wipe data/cache when you flashed the ROM? Whenever you switch to a completely different ROM (as opposed to simply upgrading one), it's a good practice to. Also, the first time you start a new ROM, it'll take longer to boot up since the phone will be rebuilding its dalvik-cache (on CM6.1, it's be at a CM animation).
Ahh yeahhh okay good. So u cleared it all up for me n now my phone is running great

Hey Guys,
having an issue getting CM7 Beta 6, after a 2nd attemp to get it installed getting the same issue.
Rom flashes, apply the fix.zip and fixbrightness.zip, reboot the phone, then after the blue led goes off the phone sits with the Moto symbol, left it for a good 15 mins and still just showing the symbol.
going to try flash with out the fix.zips and see whats happening, any one had the same issue?
*edit*
didnt install the google apps, think that might have been the issue, will try when im more awake
yeah thats the pro..instal google apps and reboot..
ok, done the reinstall last night.
now having an issue with boot looping on the startup animation,
left the phone alone for about 6 hours,
and the phone was still doing a boot loop.
I can get back in to Clockwork mod tho which is better than last time
going to try reflash it again.

I had the same problem with 2ndInit 1.6.
Install 2ndInit v1.4 (See FAQ by Antony.PS).
Try WIPE FACTORY RESET / CAHE and DALVIK, after that install CM7 from scratch.
Some users in Brazil had the same problem and fixed make those steps.
Sorry my poor english.
Thanks for the help guys,
managed to get it sorted,
full wipe, and then reinstall with the tools i had and yeah working,

Same exact setup I used. Proud Owner of CM7 Beta 6 Motorola defy!!!
The latest defy 2init v1.8 is the best option because this allows you to install either bootmenu 0.6.1 stable for cm7
Or 0.8.6 latest version
Hi i rooted my 2.1 update 1 defy with superoneclik 2.1 installed on it clockwork PAID from market and installed the the version 2.xxxxx and received an white warning sign with a little android tryed with the newer one sam thing what can i do
please help me
please help him
Dowload Defy 2ndInit off the android market, or search for the APK on here. When flashing the files, make sure you go into recovery mode by pushing the volume down button when the blue LED on your phone lights up.
Hello xDA Defy forums,
i recently installed CM7 RC0 on my defy and i'm very satisfied. It was a bit tricky for me and had to install it like 3 times because everytime when I was completely finished with my fresh installation + apps and customizations I wanted to backup the whole system with ClockworkMod.
The backup runs fine but the problem is that my defy won't boot after the backup. It seems that if I reboot to recovery with ClockWork my defy won't boot AFTER having installed CM7 (before CM7 I used ClockWork very often and it worked just fine). I'm using the "com.kb7sqi.defy.bootstrap.old.apk".
Now I'm asking: Which recovery software could I use to backup my nice working CM7 installation?
I think I can't use 2ndInit because the FAQ says:
DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF ARE YOU ALREADY RUNNING CYANOGENMOD. That ROM already has bootmenu pre-installed, and you'll probably end up having to flash an SBF file to recover your phone.
Click to collapse
This is another thing I was wondering about. Where is the pre-installed bootmenu the quote refers to? If I am starting my defy for recovery (Vol down) only the standard boot menu without backup-features appeares although I have CM7 installed.
So how can I backup my current ROM. I really don't want to go through the whole process of flashing and customizing again..
Edit SOLVED:
Ok guys, I just found out how to enter the new boot menu. I had to press vol down after the blue LED. Sorry, I didn't know this. I was able to do a backup with with ClockWork 3.2 which appeared to be installed with Cyanogen. And much more important my phone rebooted properly after this.

but here i get the error: error while restoring /system/!
what can I do? I think the version of the recovery is the problem!? while making the nandroid backup no errors occurred!
please help me I need this nasty phone
When you are trying to create custom partitions, do not boot into recovery from ROM Manager. (ROM Manager uses Temporary ZIP recoveries which cannot be modded. I should have added this to that guide :/).
Power off your phone, start in HBoot, navigate to RECOVERY, and use this Clockworkmod to create Custom MTD partitions. For now, to get your phone in working order, just flash any ROM temporarily. Then try again. Use the same version of CWM to restore as you did when creating the backup.
Also, are you sure it is 2.5.0.2? AFAIK, there isn't a version like that.

Yes i meant this version sry - as mentioned, laaate night ^^ no power after 3 days of bootloops (because of supercharger script, LOVE IT!! and have to beat the odds)and I dont wonder - same thing today. fresh rom, got the gapps on it, V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC8.1 and then bootloop bootloop.
A few hours earlier, I intuitionally did as you wrote in the post above. BTW when the wildfire has about 300mb internal space - your mtd guide worked ain't it!? ^^
... so i flashed CM update-cm-7.2.0-RC1, via the installed CWM v2.5.0.1
everything fine until now because I do whole thing again. Your custom MTD Partition guide first, then installing update-cm-7.2.0-RC1 (is it possible to update to a stable version, when its finished, out from that?) or better a stable or nightly build? Lastly I try to supercharge my mobile again. The wildfire is definitly in need of this oom fixings. (I think the built-in kernel tweaks make my buzz unhappy...) THIS SCRIPT IS GREAT NEED NEED NEED haha.
\\edit:
Right now I try flashing clockworkmod recovery v5.0.2.0 via the old version. Sometimes when I am in the recovery I get a black screen after selecting a menueitem. Then I press P-OFF and get back to the superior menue - it does not work this way everytime. Every second time I stuck on the black screen. Problems problems everywhere

I am S-OFF but didn't wanted to update the recovery right now. getting impatient. So I did exactly the same as the last time (described above. black screens in recovery - or hopping to steps like "apply this zip?" even if i didn't selected one, then I press the P-OFF button and selected the zip.)
Somehow everything works -.-
Now I've my second try in CM 7.2 RC1
I doesn't rly have the heart to try the supercharger script again - want to prevent stucking in bootscreen. What should I do?
Nandroid backup, run the script, if bootloop then restore (flashing the bravo-boot file after restore to get your partitions back as always). Thats what i did last time, and didn't try the script again. Too bored of bootloops.

Also all this people who are asking about how to activate HWA or discuss about governors...
Fot the umpteenth time, HWA is set by default in all latest Nightlies by Epsylon and Quarx. And Epsylon have also already included DroidX governors back in May. His so called BOOSTED is based on boostedASSv2. And boostedASSv2 is SMARTASSv2 with other values, working according to the same principle. Here you compare both.
So there is no need to ask for other governors or recommend the "old" DroidX ones. Just open bootmenu and choose your favourit one.
Because of such posts the thread really gets spammed.

If you are getting Bootloops( though it should not happen)then do the following:
1- Remove and re-insert the battery
2- Hold down simultaneously both the Power and Volume UP for approx 5-10sec and release
3- The screen should display

8- it should say PASS >> only then do you remove the USB cable.
9- Repeat all the steps for installation of ICS all over again.. it should work though..

3. Once you see android icon and exclamation mark release both buttons and now press volume up and volume down button together;
4. Above steps will launch Android System Recovery window (Stock Recovery);
5. Now “wipe data/factory reset” by pressing volume down key and to select press power key;
6. On the next screen it will prompt you to confirm this option by selecting “yes – delete all use data” select this option with power key again;
6. Also “wipe cache partition” from power key as mentioned above;
7. Now select “reboot system now”;
After above steps it will take around 3-5 minutes for first boot and your phone will now boot in normal state.
If the above steps does not resolves the issue then I would recommend you to use some other SBF depending on your region.

noob asking for help installing cm9
Hey guys, well i'm a noob when it comes to this, i had a lot of trouble even rooting my defy+ cuz it was 2.3.5 and when i finally got to root it and installed the 2init, well i thought i was good enough to install a cm9, i found yours and ur guide so easy that i tried it.
It all was going so good to the point where i choose the .zip to install the cm9 nightly, and i got an error: it can't open the .zip file, says it's bad, tho i've downloaded some other zips it keeps saying the same.
I'd really appreciate any help on this cuz atm my damn phone is nothing more than a dead weight in my pocket.
Thanks.
UPDATE: used another nightly and it appears to be ok so far.
Can i suggest an aditional step - create a back up before you wipe everything in clockwork mod recovery, test that back up, by selecting back up/restore and restoring the back up youve just made, then continuing with the wipe/factory re-set, should be done between steps 7 and 8.
It will add some extra time to things, but should you encounter problems youi wil have a tested working back up to go back to should everything go wrong - these emergency back ups have got me out of difficulty several times..
Also when updating a rom/nightly make a back up and save it else where - you dont need loads of back ups delte the older custom rom ones every now and agian- just keep your old stock one as a just in case.
At the moment i am runnig CM9 20120708-NIGHTLY-jordan
and i have a back up of the CM72-20120601-NIGHTLY-Defy as well as the old motorola stock froyo ready to go should i need them again.

One more noob question talking about backups : I am currently on GGL ROM (Gingerbread for Green Lens Defy), can I do a full backup, install CM9 and then only restore data once on CM9?
Thanks for the help!

please don't do that if i may suggest.
i have tried it and left stuck at moto logo.
i was using GGL ROM, so i just install the CM9 from epsylon3 zip, and got stuck.
( i was assuming that the GGL ROM is still using froyo kernel, but maybe i was wrong)
the best way is to flash sbf back to stock froyo first.
Wow! Thanks, I was about to mess it up!
I think I didn't get well the working of GGL...
But coming from GGL, did you follow all the steps of the first post of this thread?
And what about restoring GGL data after FroYo sbf flash, root, 2ndinit and CM9 installation?

what kind of data are you talking about exactly?
in my case, all my contacts, appointment, calendar data are already synced with my google account. So all of them were automatically restored the minute i logged into my account during initialization process.
as for applications, all apps that i have downloaded previously are also recorded by my google play account.
so basically for apps, i just make backups for their settings and store in SD.
After CM9 installation, i just reinstall everything, and restore settings from their backups on SD.
the other option you may try is using titanium backup for applications.
When update to a new nightly, no need to "Wipe Dalvik Cache"? but in some guide, i see this step, can you clarify this? thanks

There really isnt a need to wipe dalvik while you are doing a nightly.. Only while installing new roms.. then again.. why not go ahead with it and see the differnece with/without the dalvik clear ..
Dalvik cache?

Good day... I'm running the 120705 Eppy Defy build...
My question is, do i need to wipe the Dalvik cache when upgrading a nightly? Cuz some of the stuff the changelog says is fixed is still broken, can the dalvik cache make a difference to this regard? I have never wiped it since that first time I swopped over to CM9.
Also what data will be lost when it's wiped?
I have defy red lens upgraded to CM7.1 & now i wanna upgrade it to cm9...so i'm confused how to do it..bcoz everywhere its shown from froyo to Cm9.. but meh got cm7.1 so plz tell meh wot i need to do? any small written steps will be sufficient coz meh know how to go through boot menu and stuff..
