You could try Tasker, it's available in the Market and is well worth the couple bucks for the things it can do. It has a fairly steep learning curve, but once you figure it out, you will like it.

+1 for tasker. A rom I was using had issues sending and receiving text on wifi, and I used it to automatically turn off wifi when messaging app was open, then turn it on again upon exiting.

Wish I knew how to do it without a 3rd party app as well. Both Sense and MIUI (an AOSP variant) have somehow built this functionality into the ROM, but with all other AOSP ROMs you will need to manually toggle it or use a 3rd party app as already suggested. I'm sure if it was a high enough priority, a skilled developer here could figure out what lines of code within Sense and MIUI make this happen and implement it over to CM, but don't hold your breath. Very few of us leave our data connection off by default.
EDIT: Forgot to mention DROIDWALL. It's free in the market. When I am using ASOP, I just leave my data connection on but use droidwall to block every app except messaging. Then, if I want to use my data connection for other stuff, I just toggle droidwall off. I'm on a plan with only 100MB of data, so this kind of functionality is key for me.

Data services

I'm curious to know if there is a way to activate then deactivate data services on demand per program request.

Interesting app. Have read the name hundreds of times but never tried it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I see it has to schedule 3g activation times for background services. My question was more for on demand when not using the phone. So instead of scheduling it would be automatic.

With froyo you can turn off data when you want
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I appreciate your help but i must be asking the wrong question.
Scenario:
My phone is in my pocket. 3g is off. a program wants to use data. Lets say my email app wants to poll for new mail.
With jd I'm waiting for the schedule window. Is there a way to enable 3g when my email wants data use, then disable when its done. But also, be not limited to just the email client but any app.
I'm sill studying my java and xml before I start diving into app dev.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
JuiceDefender allows for "exceptions" (apps that are capable of utilizing data when they need to regardless of JD's settings) if you set all of the apps you wanted to have them then I'm sure it would be pretty close to what you want, but don't expect the same level of battery saving.
I bought jd just to test that. I will see how it goes.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I can't be positive if its jd or the apps but the on demand thing is crap. I'm guessing its not jd. But the way the apps send and receive data using the "service" doesn't work like it should.

Cm9 account & sync.

Is there an option in cm9 to turn off the account and sync as there is in cm7 and tw? The one that actually tells u that your saving battery by turning it off and the market won't work unless its enabled? Cuz I see that the market always updates as soon as I connect my internet so I'm thinking if there was a way to disable the sync then I would save a little more battery when I'm using the internet correct? So I see there is not actual setting for this since the account and sync being "off" doesn't have the same effect as it did in other roms. So would freezing the market and market updater be the same as turning off the account and sync that I'm looking for?

Of course. You can use the widget to the panel.
Not sure if that's what I'm looking for but when I go back to cm9 ill try it out. Thanks. Or ill try it on miui and see if its the same.

So the market not breaking doesn't waste a little battery everytime I connect to the internet because the market checks for updates? Is there a way to stop the market from checking for updates so that I can save a tiny bit more battery?

Disable auto update apps under market settings?

Oh, and notification for updates under market settings.

Okay so after going back to a tw ROM I've realized that I was a little misleading in what I actually wanted.
I don't want to disable accounts & sync, because that is the option that is found in cm9 already. What I meant was background data. Is there a way to turn off background data so that apps don't sync or do whatever they do and waste battery?

MMS over WiFi Calling

Hi,
I am running ICS 4.0.4...using stock messaging or Go SMS.
Is there any way to fix the MMS over WiFi calling issue? It's awful. Even though group SMS works within Go SMS, it fails if I'm on WiFi calling, and my friends hate using GroupMe. Are there any APN settings I can change? a different MMS.apk app I can use?
I am rooted FYI.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig
Try Samsung's fix. Turn Wi-Fi on. Open gmail and send an email to yourself and attach a pic using the acct registered to for your phone. Once you get that, try sending an mms to yourself. You should get it fairly quickly.

Yes it's a permanent fix. 2nd level tech support at tmo told me about this a few months ago and its worked for me and my wife's phone several times when I've flashed a new Rom that mms over Wi-Fi hasn't worked.

Didn't work for me unfortunately..
This doesnt work. Mines just switches to 4g to send it then back to wifi..
Well sorry guys. It's supposed to be the fix from Samsung and its worked for me numerous times.

Same thing. This does not work..

I believe the issue with GOSMS themselves been testing out MMS over wifi, so far i found it works fine with the stock MMS app and Handcent SMS. Going to try some other apps and see if they work.
Seems i may go back to HandcentSMS until GOSMS fixes it.
I have tried that technique but it failed.....

Thats because it doesnt work. Thats why these devs made it work with the stock DEODEX version or any other custom roms.. I want to see a video from the person that has "achieve" this. Because all I get is when on WIFI, and I send a MMS, 4G comes on real quick to send it and receive it then it switches off.

Im the one who originally posted the Samsung fix several months ago. I have used it after MMS over wifi not working on several ROMS after initial flash, including my current ROM Beastmade (odexed).
Here is your requested video. I sent an MMS to myself, and you can see 4G never turns on. Only wifi uploads/downloads.
Here you go!
MMS only works over data! If on wifi calling it will switch over to data to send and if data is off it will not send.

That's incorrect! If you watch the video i posted 4g never turns on. Also, i just tried it after turning data off and it went thru. If you'd like a friendly $100 PayPal wager I'd be happy to post a video showing it

Saving mms

Is there any way to get the stock messaging app to automatically change the file name when saving an mms? It promts me every time telling me to rename it or else it will overwrite the last one... Not the end of the world, but incredibly irritating.

No idea, but if you just want a convenient backup of your texts, this one seems them to your gmail. They'll be threaded weird and out of order, but easily searchable.
Oops, I can't post links yet. It's called SMS Backup+, available on the play market.

I do actually use that (and have been for quite awhile) its very handy for lots of reasons. I just like saving all of them to my phone too though.

I have the same problem, you can continue naming each individual picture with numbers you just randomly think of, its rare I repeated the same number. Or download a third party app like Handscent or Go SMS which just downloads the MMS without worrying about a particular designation. Every once in awhile you run across a Touchwiz rom that doesn't have this problem, but its usually a ASOP rom that just downloads MMS without this problem.

That's about what I figured. I used to use handcent but the stock app has made leaps and bounds over the years so I like sticking with that. I've been doing the random letters after going to save it, but in you ef up and do by chance pick something you already used, it will overwrite it.

Any update or solution to this issue? From what I remember my Samsung Epic 4G did not have this problem, as a matter of fact it did exactly what we are trying to get the Galaxy S3 to do by default. I find that this should have not been an issue, why on earth would someone NOT think to make this a basic function/feature?....

Need a good remote access app?

I left my phone at home, I need a good app where I can use a web browser to access my phone or even remote access my phone from any computer so I can check my missed calls and text messages.
Thanks

I guess the ultimate solution would be to port your number to google voice. You would never have to worry about that again.
1. Get text messages and send text messages from your email, google voice on your tablet or computer in real time and all text messages are free.
2. In a couple of clicks reroute all your calls to whatever phone is nearby. Or do what I do and ring my desk phone and my cell phone at the same time. You can also use a OBI100 to have a home phone line with google voice if you want and no carrier minutes are used.
3. Your number is yours forever. Never have to port it again. Switching carriers is fast and easy.

This seems to be the only real ANDROID remote access app, allowing you to control your ANDROID phone from your computer, not the other way around. It can be a little finicky, but it is extremely full featured and well worth paying for. Now if I understand correctly you left your phone at home, theres not really a way to get into it without first installing and setting up this app. You could install it through the web play store, but you have to set it up for it to work.
Well, might as well set it up when you get back to your phone so you can have it next time!
