Debacle - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if i can get an opinion here. My epcic recentl suffered the fate of a broken lcd.....keyboard and bottom row keys on lcd still seem to work and it appears to be operating but the screen is jsut gone. Completley useless. Anyways , i was due for an upgrade and while i didnt wanna wait for a replacement or try going through asurion (they claim ive had too many replacments in a year (4 or 5) even though they replaced my last one.....through 8 conference calls lol).........i decided to use my upgrade and try out WP7 with the HTC Arrive. Im loving that phone however i do miss the epic....I want to try and get the screen replaced..... Will Sprint not help me becasue the Arrive is now the phone on my account?

Yes. You probably switched your insurance from your Epic to your HTC Arrive when you got the new phone right?. You can try to add a line to your account, add the Epic back to it with insurance and try that, but i'm not 100% on how that would work because it's not a new phone, it's a phone you're adding... so I'd say give em a call and ask, or if you have someone on the inside, get em to hook you up lol.

Actually I believe sprint has an unwritten rule, picky customers or overly rough customers that have 4 or more replacements are forced to switch to a crappy phone......just be happy they didn't give you the O.G. pre.....lol
Which reminds me, when I bought my epic I told them, I need to move my tep from my pre to my epic. The girl said, no worries both are now covered by tep. Did they change this policy? It was about 7 months ago.

Why dont you just buy a replacement screen? You can grab a phone for around $50 - $70 on ebay w/out a motherboard. I have an extra housing/screen(that was brand new), and like 4 sliders for mine, and it cost like $90 total.

ahh i was reading some places on the net that you can take it to a sprint repair store and have them fix it for only $35 , wich would be nice.....problem is im out of $$ till wendsday AND hesitant to spend money over 50 bucks on it cuz i now have the arrive.......the arrive is pretty damn nice....but i miss the samoled , the customization , the camera , and voodoo sound lol

I work for sprint. Just put the phone back on your line for a day and take it to the store. If the can they will fix it. $35 is for repairs our replacements for cust without insurance. And if the device its not active on am account. Or a vm line is active less than 30 days the store will not touch it.

What's the ETA for Asurion replacement claims right now?

I accidentally dropped my phone on concrete floor and shattered the screen My claim has been approved yesterday morning, but hasn't shipped yet. I'm wondering if anyone here knows how long am I gonna have to wait to get my replacement? They said up to five days, but I just figured i would ask people here who have already gotten their phones replaced.
They were extremely fast when I had to make a claim. Unfortunately that was the only thing they did good, I got stuck with the phone they sent me even though it was garbage and had a busted speaker.
I have best buy's warranty now since there is no deductible and you can make more than one claim, I havent had to use it though so I dont know if they are easy to work with.

When was that, exactly? Also, you should call them up and demand a new phone. That's unacceptable and they will replace your phone, no questions asked.
wait a minute even after paying deductible u still get a used or a refurbished EVO?

It was around December last year, it was for my old HTC Touch. I had just quit smoking at the time and had to leave the sprint store before I got arrested, I was seriously about to back hand the girl who told me "it wasnt that bad."
I have been compensated by sprint in other ways so I havent left them yet but I just noticed on my new bill they are charging me fees and taxes for Arizona + the state I actually live in. And I have never lived in or even been anywhere near Arizona. So yeah, they are trying my patients.
I've had the same phone number for almost ten years now, great way to treat your loyal customers huh

part of your contract.
asurion is a major insurance provider, almost every carrier. and you are supplied with refurbished replacements as necessary.
Just made a claim for my EVO yesterday. It seems to me that they're too new to be replaced by refurbished models. A couple friends who work at separate Sprint stores seem to think the same thing, but have yet to see any EVO's replaced yet. We will see and I will update when it comes in.
I made a claim Saturday, and it arrived yesterday (Wednesday). Once it was processed, it was overnighted....and get this.....BRAND NEW!
I made a claim on Tuesday (7/27), it was approved on 7/28 & the CC information was taken then as well. I have no idea when my replacement will come but I will also update when I get it.
My current shattered evo still works & I am trying to consider the cracks in the screen a live wallpaper, but thats not really working.
despite what the best buy sales reps might tell you, their insurance gives out refurbs as well. personally i really like refurbs, since your less likely to have problems since the item has now been double/triple checked. my experience with refurbs has been excellent, YMMV. best buy salesman told me sprint insurance deduct is 150 (lie) and you can only make 1 claim a year (lie) and best buy gives you a new phone, not refurb (lie again). i actually have both insurances on my account right now, not sure why. if i break it maybe i can get 2 new (refurb) phones

Why would you want to pay for both insurances?
I learned the hard way about BB insurance - Dork Squad protection only covers manufacturer defects, normal wear & tear, and does NOT cover lost, stolen, physical or water-damaged phones. Nor do they repair your phone on-site in their store (unlike some Sprint stores) - rather, they send it out to a repair center to get it fixed, with a $150 deposit for a p.o.s. loaner phone while it's out for repair, and they will ONLY replace it with a new phone if they deem your phone unrepairable at the repair center. Funnily enough, it took the dork at the Dork Squad counter longer to fill out a repair claim form than it ever did for me to fill out a claim online at Asurion.
Considering BB charges $10/mo for their insurance (which is already covered by Sprint, or whatever phone company, as well as the manufacturer) and a $150 loaner deposit, whereas Asurion charges $7/mo with a $100 deductible for a refurbed phone (although I think Evo's are new, since my replacement was hehe), I wouldn't waste my money on BB's insurance again. I'm still fighting with them to replace a laptop they've fixed 3 times within a year under their dork protection's 'lemon' clause, and they continue to insist my screen was replaced 3 times for different reasons each time...but that's another story lol.
oh, and the ETA for my replacement Evo was about 5 days (claimed on a Friday night, got it on a Wednesday).

Thanks. I thought my replacement was refurb as the store manager was claiming as such. I had to file a Sprint warranty repair since my USB port snapped off the board from normal use.

Cracked Screen

So here is my issue. About 3 months ago i cracked my screen on the epic. I imediatly thought i would have to pay 100 dollars and use the insurance i pay for. So i decided i would live with it. About a month ago on XDA i saw that someone got there screen replaced and it could cost me either 35 dollars or nothing. I called sprint that day and found out they were right. Yesterday i went to the sprint store and asked them to repair it only to find out it will cost me $100 dollars because they changed there policy.
Is there anyway i can get sprint to honor what they said over the phone?-The guy at the normal sprint repair said i would have to go to a corporate repair store and MAYBE they would... I called sprint(not the coprorate store) and they said that it would be insurance fraud for them to do anything.
While i was at the first sprint repair store the guy said if i could find my own lcd that he could swap em out for me free of charge. So as plan b i would like to know where the cheapest lcd i can find is? Also where people would sell a bricked epic for parts...
thanks in advance
Its prob too late, but Sprint wanted to charge me $120 to replace the trackball on my BlackBerry.
I went in to another location and I talked to a guy, prob about 20. I could have done it myself for $20, but I had just started getting around after back surgery and a knee scope and didn't feel like F'n with it. He said that's what it will cost if you don't have insurance. I didn't. He said, "you must have insurance ?"."let me check..... oh that's funny they didn't take out your $7 for insurance this month", "do you have the $7 dollars today, because we can have your phone fixed & back to you in 20min, for only $15". Pretty damn cool.
You might be able to get insurance if you haven't paid your next months payment. Then tell them you had called a month earlier and asked for ins to be put on your acct and to get quotes for or change your acct. If you're anything like my wife(unless you're a guy and don't have a vagina), call and ***** them out for not fixing your acct for you and how you had to pay $100. Then keep asking for a supervisor or get someone who will fix it for you to shut you up and keep you as a customer. Don't forget to ***** about the extra $10 for 4g that you can't get or is just ****ty when you do. It might work.
Damn that was a novel. No more replies anymore after I've taken my pain pills. Let me shut up and melt back into the couch w/my hand in my pants, Al Bundy style" ahhhh....

insurance
the worst part is i already do i have insurance. I have had it since i got the phone and htey still want me to pay 100 dollars
Tell them you lost it, pay the $100 for a whole different phone then sell the broken one for parts and recoup some of your money.
thought about that
I thought i abought that but then i realized how much can i make from a bad esn epic with a cracked screen?
Well, bad esn epic's are selling for ~$300 so I wouldn't consider ~$100 ridiculous considering a new screen can be purchased for $90

holy f*** where?
Also the 100 by itself isn't ridiculous. What is ridiculous is sprint clearly told me that it would be no more then 35 dollars and now they say 100... i don't like false advertisers.
Take a look at eBay and search bad esn epic, its still good for metro pcs and rapes anything they have while being cheaper by around $50, also I meant you could sell it for $100 without being even a tad bit ridiculous
thanks for the advice.

I had a cracked screen and paid $100 for a refurb a couple days ago. What happened is they stopped replacing the screens prolly way to much money.
Epic 4g
If you can find a store that has a smart technician that harvests parts from other epics, u may be in luck. i myself being a tech, harvest as many epic screens as possible and when cases like yours come in, i can be ready to either say "with insurance its free" or "without insurance its $35" (which by the way is the new Sprint ASC policy...). OORRR you can be like every other customer and just pay the crazy $100 insurance fee (as long as you have TEP )
If you have insurance, use it. File a lost/stolen phone claim, get a new replacement phone, sell bad esn phone to a happy boost mobile customer for $200. Happy you, sprint, and boost mobile customer.
I just bought a new screen for $104 shipped to replace the screen on my wife's epic since hers had a bad back button right out of the box and we are ob boost so no taking the phone back.
And yes bad esn epics are worth a lot because it only takes about 20 minutes to flash one to boost which is still sprint and half the price.
Sent from my Epic 4G on boost mobile
I have tep and an annoying sc4ratch on my screen but its definitely not worth $100 or even $35 to fix sine its only noticeale if I look for it, so would I be able to take it to a sprint store and they'll fix it for free?
Like I said, its not really in need of fixing....but if I can get a whole new screen for free its definitely worth it...lol

Wait, they changed the TEP Policy AGAIN after the October change?
When my screen was broken, they fixed it at the Sprint Repair/Service store. I wasn't charged anything, and instead of replacing my screen, they gave me a brand new refurbished epic with a new 90 day warranty.
to get this strait
Someone would actually be willing to buy a cracked phone with a bad esn off ebay? What should i list it as?

I'd buy it for $100 factoring in that a new LCD is about $100 plus the time I'd take to replace it. I got my perfect condition lightly used Epic with a bad ESN for $240 shipped to my door from the evilbay. My wife's was $300 shipped brand new with a bad esn but the stupid thing had the back button issue that plagues so many Epics. I replaced the LCD and that fixed the problem but still...
Oh well $50/mo on boost makes it worthwhile especially when it starts dropping $5 every 6 months with the shrinkage program.
hmmmm
So should i flash it to boost mobile myself or just put it on ebay?
Depends what you want to do. If you are handy and good with electronics you can replace the screen and then buy a cheap used sanyo incognito on boost so you can flash it.
You can also flash to Cricket or maybe Metro.

Just lost my E4GT, need help with TEP.

Hey guys, I have TEP and was wondering what they're replacing our phone with now. I'm asking because a few years ago I used to have a Mogul and needed to have that replaced, but they gave me another phone.
Anyway, has anyone gone through the process recently?

It'll be a Epic touch 4G most likely.. but who knows.. I've heard some people recently say that they wanted to force an htc evo design on them.. do the claim online and it should tell you as you do the process.
That's what happened to me today.. They tried to fool me into believing the HTC Evo was a comparable phone to the Galaxy S2.. When I wouldn't budge they tried to get me to upgrade to the S3 by paying $260+ to buy out my contract and upgrade by signing another two year contract.. I'm pissed off.. I mean why do I pay insurance for?

My screen shattered on my black E4GT a couple weeks ago. TEP offered me an original EVO 4G. I said no way, that's a two+ year old phone. They then offered me an EVO Design or a Motorola Photon. I refused. Four different people, including two people from their "Resolution Team" said there was nothing else they could do. My phone wasn't available. Fourth person offered me a supervisor. Within 30 seconds I was offered a white E4GT. Fine by me. UPS delivered it about 18 hours later.

Just call and talk to them.
Be persistent but don't try demanding anything from them or you will end up in a 10 call 20 person runaround.
Know your facts and f they try to offer you an inferior device call them out.
Remember... you will catch more bees with honey than vinegar.

It kinda is but if a month in your phone gets destroyed its totally worth it. No ones getting a Galaxy SIII straight out for 150 bucks etc. I lost my last phone the month after I took insurance off it. Bought another on ebay for like 30 bucks until my contract was up (not a smart phone).
The real idea long term when there are little to no replacements available is you have A phone that in general runs most of the software you had before. But yeah its often idiotic the choice they give you and it takes some doing to get a comparable phone. Your alternative choice is buying a phone for 100 bucks of Ebay that is nowhere near what you had, or just going without a phone altogether.
When insurance was introduced most phones didn't even do what these phones did there was less to lose, maybe your phone couldn't run this jar or that jar that was about it. Its a little more problematic now.
sigh, these guys suck.
I've tried talking to them, all they give me is the option to get a Nexus S 4G, the phone from which I paid 200 bucks to upgrade from. The E4GT is backordered, and they said a minimum of 7 days till they have a possibility of it being back in stock.
I don't understand how they can screw a customer who's had TEP for ages like this.
I'm going to give Executive Support a call, let's see what they can do.
They tried to pull that crap with me when I TEP'd my phone due to a faulty screen. They sent me an EVO 4G and said that it was the most comparable phone they had in stock. I told them I wasn't going to take a phone that was 2 years old when mine had just came out. They said it was all they could do and that they would be sending out the replacement phone within 24 hours.
A couple of days later I got my replacement phone, sure enough, it was an EVO 4G. I shipped it back, and here I sit with my faulty E4GT.
TL;DR TEP is garbage and you might as well outright buy your phones.

But after two weeks of this, I finally got a E4GT, but the replacement they sent sucks, the GPS doesn't work at all, and the screen is really dim, they said they're sending me another replacement, but lets see how long this one takes.
At least I can make an receive calls for now/get my email lol. I'm canceling TEP after this, it's not worth the amount of money that I'm paying.

Dealing with sprint reps about TEP

Okay never actually talked to one of these reps. How can I convince them to give me a different phone? No offense ..I love my e4gt but June(upgrade) seems far away lol
You can buy out your contract. Sell your phone back to sprint and then pay the upgrade price for the phone you want.
And TEP your referring to is the insurance. Is your phone damaged?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes the phone is slightly damaged. Got it over a year ago. 3 corners are scrapped. USB port is jacked up. But screen is basically perfect.
Buying out my contract seems like the best option though. What's the catch?
1) Sell back phone for at least $100(quoted from local shop, probably more if through private seller I'm sure).
2) Buyout contract for $60 dollars
3)???
4) Profit!
Will just wait on a nicer phone cause don't want to waste this opportunity lol
If you have insurance they should fix the usb port for free. Take it to local sprint service center. After that it should be worth $150-200 if you sell it.
New Phone
Insurance is so easy! $120, You get a brand new phone within 48 hours. 1st step back up what you want then tell them it was water damaged, and screen broke. Tell them phone turns on but is not usable. Step 2 wait for new phone. Step 3 get new phone running. Step 4 Ship old phone back to insurance with their free package and enjoy a new phone.
Edit damage old phone before sending back and soak it in water. You dont want anyone else to be able to see your stuff!

I'm not trying to start anything, But please don't encourage or advice someone to commit fraud(Intentionally damaging a phone). You don't need to "damage old phone before sending back and soak in water." You can format internal storage. If you have an SD card move all the stuff you would like to keep to your SD Card. then under settings-storage format internal storage. Then when you new phone arrives do a data factory reset, providing your on a safe kernel (but if your turning your phone back, I would worry about it, just try not to brick it.) But your best option would be to odin it back to stock. like FI27 Stock with data wipe. Then all your personal stuff will be removed from the phone.
I hope this helps.
Lol looks like I misunderstood the early termination program. Doing the math, it would be better to just buy it from a private seller

[Q] Destroyed Screen

I wont go into details, but honestly first time i've ever completely destroyed a phone.
Short story, fell out of my pocket getting into vehicle.
I've always had insurance and still do, so I took it in to a Sprint store to get it looked at.
Initially the lady that I first went to, saw my phone looked up my account, and said ok its still in warranty, so I'll get you a replacement.
Then some dude came over and told her that she cant do that, and to get it serviced through their equipment protection plan.
Is there anyway this can get fixed without paying the replacement fee/copay?

Then some dude came over and told her that she cant do that, and to get it serviced through their equipment protection plan.
Is there anyway this can get fixed without paying the replacement fee/copay?

What exactly got damaged on the phone? If the screen was cracked then due to the policy change about 2 years ago you'll have to go through insurance not sprint. They now consider that physical damage that's not repairable in store. Your out of luck.
I don't remember but is the insurance deductible really 299? In November I chose best buy insurance instead of sprint due to always having issues at sprint. The third party centers were better in my area than the actual retail store but sprint decided to shut down the third party center here. Oh well.

The whole thing is busted, the screen is completely trashed, outside casing is beaten up and effed, missing the screen glass in the corners of the screen, and the back will not snap on in places. I have insurance, Just with bad timing I would need to replace both mine and my girlfriends as she had broken her a few days later. Hence the $299 I was saying $150 per phone for the deductable.

Best thing is to pay for insurance replacement. It's better to get a new one then try to repair. Unless sprint will order a replacement at no charge which will be almost impossible. Good luck

I wont go into details, but honestly first time i've ever completely destroyed a phone.
Short story, fell out of my pocket getting into vehicle.

This is why I will NEVER buy my devices from Sprint. I always buy at Radio Shack because you can destroy your phone, walk in the store and walk out with a brand new one and not a refurbished piece of **** that Sprint makes you pay $50 more bucks for.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I don't know of any tips to help.
On a side note, this is why I don't get the insurance. I think it's a total rip off for the most part. People pay around $7 to $10 a month, which works to around $168 to $240 over two years. Not the issue. But then you have play additional $100 to $150 dollars deductible. This works out ok earily in the life cycle of the phone, but towards the end, it's the same cost for a new phone out of contract. And you don't get a choice on the deductible like with car insurance. I think a more reasonable deductible is $50 with the same insurance rate.
Granted, I don't know the numbers of how many broken phone claims the insurance company or Sprint get. It's possible, people, in general, are reckless with them and are having to replace them like underwear. My guess, probably not, and it's just easy money for the most part.
