Have two days left before I'm stuck with the epic. Just wondering if I'm making the right choice. I love the keyboard but I only use it for gaming. The screen is great but the software is lacking. Do you guys think that the evos hardware compares to the epics? The phone is fast but the gps sucks. Just trying to get some input from the other side.

try the evo for 30 days
, you can root it, play with it, flash all you want and still return it to stock to return if you dont like
Well I walk own & walk around with both phones & even though on paper, spec wise the Epic beats the Evo, in real world use, the Evo is a better phone IMO with wayyyyy better support from Sprint, HTC & the devs on Xda. I hardly ever use my Epic.
No I'm not happy to see you but yes...that is a Evo in my pocket!
I would say the Evo, but maybe if you like a keyboard try the shift. Try the Evo for 30 days and if you don't like it stay with the Epic.
It is a nice phone but I just don't want to get stuck with a forgotten phone like I was with the pre. As far as the keyboard I use swype and I heard game gripper is coming out with a bluetooth game pad. If I knew for certain that samsung would update this phone and get rid of all its bugs I would prob keep it. I think my biggest prob is having to walk around my backyard trying to get a signal with gps.

I'd go with the EVO, even before last weeks FroYo update fiasco. HTC's are more reliable, in my opinion. I just moved my wife from a Samsung moment to the EVO shift and she loves is. granted, it's not fair to make a comparison regarding the EPIC based on experiences with the Moment, which everybody will agree is not half the phone the EPIC is. But my experience with Samsung compared to HTC in general is that HTC is the far superior brand.
I would go with the evo. I have a friend who tried both and really just liked the evo better. The only thing that made me a little apprehensive at first was it was all touch, but I got used to it quick and would never go back.
hardware wise i think the epic is better, but its samsung who have proven they don't really support their newer tech and their UI skin isn't my favorite. The evo's aftermarket community is probably second only to the nexus phones and on par with the droid phones and the Evo is still sprints flagship android phone. Plus HTC build quality is nice and i like sense and it allows me to use it with my work email so for me its a no brainer
Evo without a doubt. If you are on these forums and are interested in future development, has to be evo. Samsung seems to be pissing a LOT of people off and it doesn't seem like there are really that many devs working on them.
HTC and EVO are the way to go IMO. All i can say is i have had my evo since launch day and i dont see a phone coming to sprint any time soon that will make me want to get new one. I LOVE MY PHONE...
And like people have said, Get the Evo, try it for 30. You will probably not go back to the Epic!

Htc build quality is nice? Let me hit what you're smoking lol. But seriously I'd go evo if you want to be a power user
Swyped from my cyanogenized and gingerbreaded EVO
My wife and I recently changed over to Sprint and at first, we both got Epics. Within my 30 days I changed to the EVO and I don't regret that choice for a minute. The factors in my decision:
1. I knew I was going to root and flash a new ROM anyway (CM7 is amazing) so I didn't care what it had to offer stock.
2. I hate having a physical keyboard.
3. I don't play games on the phone.
4. Display: the SuperAMOLED screen on the Epic is gorgeous, no doubt, and oh how I wish the EVO had one, but honestly it wasn't a determining factor for me, and it shouldn't be for anyone. You can tell that it's a different type of screen (sometimes you can see a little tracing) and the colors aren't as vibrant, but it's still a pretty display on the EVO.
Yes, the Epic has a better processor and GPU, but having had my EVO for a while now, it feels solid, which is important for me. My wife likes her Epic because of the "pretty screen" and the keyboard, but whenever I am doing something with it (installing something for her or whatever) it feels like a cheap toy compared to my EVO.

I second this. For the longest time I fell in love with this thing a little more every day. A few months ago we kind of got in a bit of a rut, then CM7 came out and she's more beautiful than ever (No CM7 for Epic). As everyone has said, there's no comparison between the two when it comes to development. A friend has the Epic and I taught her how to use it and have played around with it extensively and for me, my EVO is superior.

There were some build quality issues at the beginning (I swapped out my launch day unit due to screen separation) but I think they've got that all fixed. The Epic just feels to light and cheap to me.
For anyone who talks about the Epics faster CPU/GPU, how much of it can it really use while it's stuck with 2.1. This is my quadrant score running CM7 RC1. Granted, synthetic benchmarks aren't a totally accurate gauge of performance but I'm pretty satisfied with this.
op, remember where you are posting this...

I don't disagree and I hate synthetics. I do know though that the performance of the EVO with all the development that's gone on since launch is competitive with the Epics performance.
Its just a really hard choice to make. If this phone ever gets the support it deserves it would rule. But that's a really big IF. With the way samsung is going I don't know if it will ever see a fully functional 2.2 prob never 2.3 or above like we all know the evo will
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Quadrant scores don't mean real world performance. You can have a regular setting and get "okay" scores, but throw on setcpu at max overclocking and take the test and have high scores, it just superficial and can't be accurate. But the Evo does have excellent performance while not being overclocked at all.
My wife and I have both. The key board can be nice but the evo wins everything else. My sister inlaw tried both and went with the evo and never looked back.

It really just comes down to what you want out of your phone. If you want a phone with a phyiscal keyboard at least now the EVO Shift is an option!
As another member previously mentioned, I would take full advantage of the 30-day trial peroid. Just don't get too attached to the phone (unless you plan on keeping it)!
I'm thinking about getting this phone today. What are your thoughts. Please be completly honest. I watch a youtube review and I'm very impressed by it.

Best phone out, hardware wise. The only one that beats it is the Nexus. At least until CM9 comes out that is. Seems like you're on Sprint anyway, so you get the Nexus. There isnt a better Sprint phone out right now, by a mile.
Came from the original epic and love this phone. Never really used the physical keyboard on the OG Epic though, for some that's a deal breaker. Otherwise this phone is awesome.

I have both and only when I started using my Epic did I realize how freakin fast the Epic Touch is. Scrolling through very long list shows a clear difference between the two. Epic is great IMO, one of my favorite devices from the last couple of years, but the Epic Touch is just plain sick. The lack of a keyboard is a frightening thought that is diminishing slowly on a daily basis. Battery life is better, screen size is very get used to... I say go for it UNLESS you're saving your upgrade for LTE goodness, which is way into the future.
I picked up an Evo 3D today too, and man is this thing laggy in comparison the the Galaxy S2 phones. Hopefully I can find someone to trade for a Nexus 4G so I can do the ICS thing for a bit.
Also, once you go AMOLED, you never go to fake black. Or something to that effect.
Bought the OG Epic at Launch and the Touch at Launch. I never used the physical keyboard on the OG Epic. I absolutely love the Touch and don't regret my decision at all. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned. I would never go back to the OG Epic.
I concur OG Epic to the Touch. Great upgrade and we have a few ppl from that dev community too so it was a pretty smooth transition root/custom rom-wise for me.
You'll get used to not having a keyboard, after that your never go back to one.
Get this phone, its fantastic.
I had the original Epic, and I was one of those people who seldom used the keyboard, so the move wasn't that difficult for me. Plus I had the Nexus for about a month since Sprint replaced my Epic with one because I kept having problems, and this phone is leagues ahead of both phones!
Its a great phone. I rooted my Epic 4G with ACS Frozen Rom and that made the phone work great.
With the Epic Touch out of the box its even better. I have not rooted because i am so happy with at Stock.
I have both. I bought the E4gt 2 months ago and the hardware is amazing. BUT I still carry my OG epic as my daily phone. I really do miss the physical keyboard and I have yet to get my battery to out last my og epic equally app configured. The OG epic has been tweaked to the point that I'm getting good life. That being said, I have been tweaking the E4GT with some of the latest Roms/kernels so that I have gotten REALLY good standbytime and am slowly adding in my apps and seeing what has caused the powere issue. Originally my E4gt was setup the same as my OG epic so I know that some apps dont play the same on the E4gt. I get wake locks on a couple apps as well that I do not see on the OG epic. Now that being said, I will at some point switch to the E4gt as my daily driver and I hope to soon. The hardware is great and the experience is great.. but I have had a hard time turining off the OG epic as it just works!

I came from the OG Epic, its an amazing phone. I recently dropped it and cracked my screen bad and had a loaner phone for like 4 days... was going from withdrawls cuz I missed my Epic touch so much lol. Its a worthwhile buy.
I had the og epic... I would say get this phone as long as you don't use the keyboard much... it really is an amazing phone, even on a stock rom

Thank you so much everyone for the response I just got this phone today. So far I like have to get use to not having a physical keyboard though. The only I've noticed was that the on screen keyboard is a little laggy I guess there is a fix to that.

Had the og epic close to launch, miss the keyboard but this thing is blazing fast even underclocked the first phone were even under very heavy use on the stock battery I plain can't kill it in one day, gaming aside and the camera is first class. And our community is actually awesome, they have really worked all the bugs out of this phone. It has renewed my loyalty to Samsung. I know how frustrating the lack of support was on the of epic

This phone is fantastic. I'm a gamer, music lover, texter, (pretty much everything that this phone does). And it hasn't failed on me once. Some people say GPS has issues, but I've never experienced them, on any ROM. I think it's location dependent. Anyways...I'd hands down recommend this phone and Sammobile (aka Samfirmware) is leaking builds about twice a month, so an ICS leak will probably arrive maybe early Q1 to mid Q2. The hardware is definitely the best in the US right now (I'm talking about camera, CPU, GPU). Something I thought I wouldn't like prior to my purchase was the size of the screen being a bit large, but I bought it regardless and now it's my favorite feature.
Hello, XDA friends(to be!)
I'm thinking of buying the Epic Touch 4G next week following the death (may it rest in peace) of my old EVO 4g.
I've been reading reviews, looked up how to increase the resolution, checked into rooting it.. so on and so forth. I've rooted my old phone and my boyfriend's phone so i'm not too worried about the process.
One question I haven't been able to get answered is the quality of the 4G on the phone.
For example, I use my 4G internet on my EVO pretty much daily. I travel in the dallas area alot and tether it with my laptop for work. I was very pleased with the consistent quality of the 4G radio on the EVO
Is the 4G radio on the Epic Touch 4G any good? Can I rely on it for my tethering needs? I'm hoping for -at least- similar quality to my old EVO.. I heard of the LOS problems, but with sprint just releasing a (mostly) fix for the issue, i'm not too worried. Worst case, I can find a custom ROM that helps with the issue.
TL;DR
Is the 4G radio any good?
Do the standard Wireless tethering apps work?
Will I NEED a custom ROM to deal with LOS/Signal quality in general/Tethering?
thanks guys!

The radio is average.
Yes all the standard tethering apps work (provided you're rooted)
No. Just update the firmware. I haven't had LoS since Ek02.
If you do go ahead and pull the trigger on the ET4G Load a custom ROM for sure as this phone is pretty bloated with crappy software. I highly suggest Culkulin's 2.8.1 ROM and it's probably doubled my battery life as well as sped up the phone considerably. Also the Sprint Hotspot feature is unlocked so the only other tether app I use is Android Wired Tether (wired tether for root users).
.
Thanks!
I can deal with "Average.".
Any chance anyone is a current E4GT user who used to be an EVO 4g user and can compare?
Glad to hear tethering apps work fine. I'm having a hard time getting a working one for my boyfriend's EVO 3D. I've gone through like 9 different versions.
I'm currently considering the Blazer ROM, I really like its style. I will look into the one you suggested though.
Thanks so much!

As a recent Evo4G user (about 3 weeks ago), I offer the simple (because I'm at work) opinion of "hell yes!". For the reasons of: screen, CPU/gpu, storage, and weirdly enough... Touchwiz! (screw Sense, seriously. I thought I would miss it. Not one bit.) And like mentioned previous, the Los issues are no more. If you got good 4G on your evo, you'll get just as good on the E4GT. So tethering should be no issue at all.
And there are quite a few roms around, considering the age of the phone. (and rumored ICS in the near future)
The Evo4G seems clunky now. You'll see.

Thanks you guys! Y'all rock. I'm getting the phone.. ordering today!
I disagree with the 4g radio being average on the Epic. I had both original Epic n Evo 4g and I'm currently rocking the upgraded models. The Evo has better radios in total but the 4g radio on the Epic is superior. Where I get three bars on the Epic the Evo would have two and where the Evo would lose connection the Epic would stay locked to its one bar. Also the Evo also does this thing that when you put your hand on it the signal drops one bar of it's 4g. I'll post a picture when I can of both phones side by side connected to 4G so you can see what I mean..

Has anyone currently on the Galaxy S II previsouly came from using the Evo 4g? I am thinking about updating to this one, I have my upgrade but im pretty happy with the evo 4g and the development its recieved the past years..
But I wanted to get input if someone has switched from my phone to this and the pro's and con's..
I'd appreciate any input!
I came from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D to the galaxy SII. Honestly I would go with the EVO 3D. I gave mine to my wife and think I will switch my phone back with her. Sense is just so far superior an interface it is enough to make me hate using my galaxy SII. If I could get sense on this phone it would be awesome.
Thanks for the reply, Sense is good, uses a lot of battery life. What launcher is most comonly used for galaxy s2??
I came from the EVO 4G and I have to say I love this phone. I thought I was a sense fiend but once I go this phone I like not having it. It just seems snappier without it. And once we get a full ICS rom I won't miss sense at all.

You mean what launcher does it come with or what launcher do we prefer to install from the market? Touchwiz is a lot less intrusive than sense and i prefer ADW launcher but all other ones are great options. I still use my evo 3d since it has great development but this device is far more superior than both the evo/evo 3d that it really isn't a bad choice.

If you like the big screen of the EVO 4g, then you'll love the screen of the ET4g. I had the evo3d, it seemed really small the radio is very weak. It was the only phone that has had no signal in side my house. I felt the build quality was sub par also with the evo3d also. Just my opinion.
Here is my 2 cents.
Pros...e4gt brighter screen, smoother operation (no lag), much easier I think to root and customize. Better battery life and much more pros I know I'm missing
Con...radio....the radio signal sucks compared to evo. If you are in an area that your evo gets 2 bars your lucky on the Samsung to get one or have signal at all....could be different for you in your area.
This has been a few of the items I have noticed about the 2 phones.

I came from the Evo 4G and this phone by far out does the Evo. Speed...graphics power...screen...1080p video is 100% better..battery life too. It would be nice to be able to switch between Touchwiz and Android Gingerbread Stock layouf...but otherwise...its a no brianer.

I could not disagree with this post more.
I too came from a long history of HTC devices (most recently the Evo4G), and thought I would miss Sense. Nope. Not one bit. And I wouldn't touch an Evo3D with someone elses 10 ft pole.
Like mentioned in previous posts: Screen, batt life, CPU/GPU, camera!, massive amounts of internal storage, and yes, even touchwiz, make this a Far Superior phone.
And dev support is really picking up, new roms all the time.
do it.

I might be in this forum soon too. Over the past couple of days my Evo's charging port has been totally screwed up and my battery went from charging perfectly well to not charging at all. Can't even boot it up now to unroot it so I figured I might use the upgrade subsidy I've been sitting on since June. I had really planned to wait for the Nexus or SGS3 this summer/fall but I may just say "screw it" and upgrade today. Then when fall rolls around and there is some new badass handset I want, I can decide if I want to sell the SGS2 and put the proceeds toward the new one.
Traded my evo after my original gave up the ghost charging.
Now with e4gt. Love it!
Only annoyences is that i cant take pics while talking on the phone and i cant play music while on the Phone either.

FYI - I am on UnNamed and I can take pics and be on the phone. Quite simple as others have pointed out, this phone is clearly an upgrade from the Evo. I have them both and like others I thought it could not get any better than my Evo and I have been proven wrong. Also I just got the SGII for 48.88 at Sams club....
Ya i too came from an evo and let me tell ya this phone is soo much better in every way!! The evo's screen was horrible it was kinda laggy and battery life was just rediculous! This phone has an amazing screen you can crank the brightness all the way up and the battery is still gonna last you all day! This phone is a major win!! Why does it matter when the Evo 3D gets an official ICS update? If they get it out before samsung then good for HTC.
We already have perfectly usable ICS builds so why dont you just enjoy what we have and flash a leaked build if you want ICS.
Well the 3d gets ics a month after the new evo....so we get ics a month after the gs3.

It doesn't really matter other than all these amazing ROMs we currently have will be even more amazing once the Devs have source to work with. That's the only part that matters and the 3D is a crap phone (I have experience with it so I can claim that).
Have the 3D forums been full of leaks? I mean we've gone through a ton of them so it would seem (to me) like surely we'd be one step closer, and maybe we are. I just noted that they now have a confirmed time frame whereas we've heard nothing concrete.
Okay you guys carry on without me, I'm going to do some testing.

The E4GT is a better phone than the Evo 3D, but you'd have to be a fairly monumental idiot to say its a crap phone. I own both of these phones, my Evo is running a fully functional leaked ICS build. The 3d feature is useless but you obviously don't have to use it. Stock vs stock the Evo is pretty bad but with one of the custom roms and all the HTC sense 3.0 bloat removed and a highly optimized kernel the Evo pretty much matches or exceeds the raw performance of the GS2 in real usage and benchmarks (7500+ antutu, 4700+ quadrant, etc). The build quality is also far superior to the E4GT which is really plasticy and cheap feeling.
However the GSII camera is light years ahead of the Evo, the screen also looks way better despite its inferior resolution. The GSII's GPU also beats the Evo's by a good amount.
Yes the GSII is better, but the Evo is far from crappy.
On a side note, I also tried a leaked sense 4.0 build on the Evo from the one s. I've always been into AOSP but I gotta admit sense 4.0 is pretty nice. Considering I felt that sense 3.0 was the worst of all the overlays out there, HTC did well with the new Sense 4.0. Very nice looking, sleek and very very fast unlike sense 3.
And its getting pics officially before us lol

Yeah I'm definitely far from a monumental idiot and I've owned a few HTC's, loved the OG EVO but I stand by my claim that, in my experience, the 3D was crap and I dropped it the second the E4GT came out. But I've made this claim countless times and I continue to stand by it. It was thick, clunky and the gimmicky 3D didn't impress. Oh, and one more thing and this bugged me even with the OG EVO, I HATE their protruding camera lens. So there. lol (now I'm using humor, don't get fussy)
If you like the phone then more power to you. Now I'm really going to bed. Night all.

Whether or not you think its "crap" or not is irrelevant, it doesn't change the fact that the Evo's hardware is far from outdated and indeed very robust. It's a solid well rounded phone. I also see absolutely no logic in your statement that because the 3D didn't impress, that it somehow makes the phone worse. It's an extra feature, nothing more. If you don't use it, the phone is like any other smart phone. The Evo 3d isn't a slim device but its by no means thick or clunky as you say (its 12mm vs the 10mm of the E4GT). You loved the OG Evo (which also has the protruding camera as you metioned) but claim the Evo 3D is garbage, yet the Evo absolutely destroys the OG Evo in everything from pixel density, build quality, camera, performance, Ram, software features, etc.
You are entitled to believe what you want of course but to any reasonable person it is quite nonsensical. It's like saying because the One X or Evo 4G LTE is out now, it makes the Galaxy S2 crap.
Not everyone is rooted lol. Some of us are waiting for official ics. After coming from the 3d to the e4gt ill never buy another evo. All 3 of my lines are eligible for an upgrade so my buddys are makin me offers lol
