Why doesn't the Epic 4G have official CM7 support? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

to my understanding they (Deamon87 and the Epic CM7 squad) have been trying to get a build that meets the official CM7 standards in order to get the official support....the question I'm bringing to the table is why the Epic 4G (which is supposed to be a flagship sprint phone) didn't have official support from release like some other phones coming out have....with functional nightlies out within a week of release....if anybody has any information i'd really love to know!?!?

Ohh ok I didn't know if it was a main project or anything...and yes the Epic 4G would be a very VERY boring device compared to all the other developers other phones have without them...but my question still remains why doesn't the Epic 4G get ROM releases from the official CM7 developer team like 20+ other devices get...even the other Galaxy S phones have official CM7 support...what makes us Epic owners different?

According to the Cyanogenmod "Devices" page, Samsung Galaxy S (they just have one link for all the Galaxy S phones) is not supported. So...I don't think they do have official support:
"Information
The Samsung Galaxy S is a series of devices that feature a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. It has/will be released in the USA from several carriers & under their own name, including the Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile, the Samsung Captivate for AT&T, the Samsung Fascinate for Verizon & the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint.
Not officially supported by CyanogenMod"
Straight from their web site.

In my understanding, it was because some of the base driver files required software from Samsung, that Samsung will not release, causing the need for the drivers to be totally rewritten and/or made from scratch
As such, I got the impression that once all the drivers have been written/created, official support would be forth coming, but until then, it was not available.
that is just my educated guess from all I have read on the subject though...

well now that the nexus s with 4g wimax is out perhaps the epic 4g will get some sort of rom based off that... I say give it a few days... As we know the nexus s has 2.3.4 now...

I just checked the captivate and vibrant forums under development and they both have fully functional versions of CM7 with various custom kernals...the only other Galaxy S device in the same developmental boat as us is the Fascinate....the Vibrant & Captivate forums also have instructional links to the CM7 website about flashing...so again I propose the question with a slight adjustment...why wouldn't the Epic 4G and Fascinate have official support...and does anybody know how we would request development from the official CM7 team

Somebody has to make the time to do the hardwork and have the know how to figure out how to convert the Samsung Epic Drivers. HTC usually reuses the same parts each year so development is simple. But on the other hand it makes their hardware suck and outdated. Samsung is innovative and they don't want their secrets out their for anybody to rip off and due to the fact they are innovative you have create new drive every time they come out with a new phone.

CM7
I am grateful for all that the CM7 have done. I a sea of glitchy ROMS, no of them fit for a daily, out of the gate, the Alpha ROM for the Epic has been, well, epic. A great ROM with wonderful potential.

Hey hey now! If you appreciate the CM7 rom brought together for the Epic a year after it's release and right before its demise, that's great. But don't go badmouthing the fully-featured, very stable assortment of roms that have kept the Epic 4G alive for over a year now such as Viper, Bonsai, Midnight, and SyndicateFrozen to name a few! There are plenty of great roms that thousands of users use daily and have been for many months, you must be doing something wrong.
Also, check your grammar a bit:
"I[n] a sea of glitchy ROMS, no[ne] of them fit for a daily, out of the gate..."

Sorry Random, you are right. I have only begun to root for a few months now and it is likely my ignorance that keeps me from having a smooth user experience. Admittedly I have only been flashing GB ROMs and have not tried the Froyo ROMs. I have only tried a few because the work of restoring apps and data gets tiring after a full week of work and a life to live. I apologize to all the devs that have worked so hard to make the 4G a better device and am definitely grateful for all those that have done so much and put in so much of their valuable time. Perhaps I will give one of the Froyo ROMs a spin.
As to the grammar, well, I have no excuse and feel deep shame. Please forgive me.

see, there's your problem. while the GB roms are fun, they aren't "daily driver" stable generally speaking. RandomKing's Phoenix 2.2, ACS's SFR 1.2, ERA's Simply AOSP 4.01, and many others are ones i've run for daily usage and they all have their strong points (mostly come down to preference) and are all very stable and fast.

yes, you are right, I got stuck on the GB train and couldn't get off.

[Q] CM7 on Fascinate now?

I hate to do this but did you guys see this. I really wish we were so close on the Epic. Is our phone really so different(I admit I don't know much about the differences)?
I have been following a Twitter that I think should be showing the commits but haven't seen any changes in a while. Has anyone heard anything recently? Are people still working on it? Ready but wait for the source to GB? Or has it been given up on?

EDIT: *Chanting* MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT!
We'd have a better change getting official gingerbread tonight than getting a port of thay imo
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
I agree with Zanderman. Although ports seem to "sound easier" to accomplish, that isn't always the case. I've heard lots of talk about it being easier and a lot more productive if we got Devs to build it once source is released opposed to porting it. patience is key here, which a lot of us don't seem to have anymore -__- I'm confident our Devs will get it working soon tho, we just need good ol' Samsung to release code, which they like taking their sweet time with -__-
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
But isn't the only difference that affects the Rom, the different bands that Sprint and Verizon use? They're both CDMA, so if we built a AOSP GB Kernel, we could probably use their ROM, but if not, it'd be easier to port than the GSM Galaxy S and variants. Keyboard shouldn't affect the ROM much.
But they don't have Source either! How did they get it is my question.
Bump and a thanks if you answer my question
Because their developers decided they needed to build their own, and got it right. We have to wait becase we know we're getting future updates.

Introduction thread

Finally, this section took too long to get here!
Now, let's get to it:
Tell us what phone you are coming from, and if you plan on developing in some form for the E4GT.
I'm known as Mr. Z. I'm coming from an Epic 4G, and I plan on theming for this device. Also, I'm part of a group called Epic Revolution for Android, so I'd be looking forward to good stuff coming from us in the future.
Coming from the original EVO. Bought it on its launch date last June. That was my first smart phone so all I know is HTC. Will be curious to see what Samsung has to offer.
Unfortunately have no developing skills.
Coming from a evo. I got one on launch day and ran all the Snap development kernels at the beginning... Along with Netarchys too. The original evo development was so fun. I think this phone may bring that back.

Coming from the Epic 4g, got on release date. Flashed everything high and low and plan to do so here too Can't wait till it comes out.
Coming From the Epic 4G ... I Can't develop at all
But i can help provide help to users who need it ...
Can't wait to get to know you guys ...

Coming from a launch date Epic as well. Hope to learn enough to develop. May share my theme if I get it up to par with what some of the dev teams are able to offer. Glad to see a few familiar faces Mr Z and iSaint.
I am coming from the Epic 4G. I got it on launch day. I am not a dev but I test for just about every one that we have. Obviously, I will be flashing this phone quite a bit as well.

Hello everyone. I still have my Evo 4G, tried many ROMs and kernels, and made a few things myself.
Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth from their previous phones, but the E4GT is too appealing not to try. I'll definitely take this phone for a spin. I know a bit about android and can find my way around, so I'll do my best to help out and add to this community if I keep this phone.

Hero - EVO - Nexus S 4G - Epic Touch.
Can't wait for this phone...crazy powerhouse. I may go back to the Nexus S 4G depending on how long ICS takes to come to the Epic Touch. But I'm keeping both.
Considering the ET4G still... I still have my epic 4g, had it since launch. Also had an evo from launch as well as the og droid so I've been with android for some time. I'm learning java and android development but I'm still in early stages... I'll be trolling these forums for a while to see how development picks up around here and if it turns out well i will surely be making the jump.

[Q] XDA Samsung Development Teams - What is the landscape like for Samsung dev

Hey all, let me be very candid. I am coming from the OG EVO camp and we had an excellent set of developers (toast, TEAMWIN, Unrevoked,etc...)
My main concern with Samsung, is that most Samsung users say "You better like what you get when you buy it, because that's how it will stay". Now, I know that Samsung will likely update the E4GT some, but probably not as much as HTC does.
This being said, have those of you that are previous Android/Samsung owners (such as Epic 4G) experienced a good set of devs and development for Samsung products? I am seeing Team ACS pop up, but I don't know much about them. Do you feel like Samsung's lack of support down the road for E4GT will be made up for for the Samsung devs here at XDA? Thanks for any feedback, this pretty much seems like the best phone ever produced...

He was comparing the Epic community to this one. On the Epic, everything is really difficult to develop. The keyboard and some of the internals make it difficult. This phone will have tons of top notch development. I am optimistic that we will get timely updates as well. You have to remember the Epic was a niche phone. Devs got 2.3 running well on the Samsung Moment, and even have CM7 working (mostly) on it. The dev community are the ones that fixed the infamous data lock problem, not Samsung.
The ET4G has FAR more interest by devs than the Moment ever did, so I would not be worried at all about development.
You'll just need to look around and take a little bit from each community... ACS, XDA and SDX are all great resources.

OHH, that makes sense. In other words, you think development of this phone will more closely parallel the development of the International GS2 because it's more similar? That's very exciting news. They were getting ready to start plans on SRF with a 2.3 GB base, but it never really materialized. I don't know exactly why, but it would be very nice to see an SRF offering for the E4GT. It was my go-to rom of choice for the Epic.
My concerns with development around the Epic Touch lies in the trend that many people refuse to upgrade to the Touch from the original Epic. It's just not worth the upgrade considering the gain in hardware/software, especially when considering the impending release of LTE devices.

[Q] Where are all the ICS Roms?

Hello everyone.
Im a HTC Faithful and currently using an Evo 4g still. This phone is starting to show its age and im thinking of picking up a Epic Touch.
But looking at the dev section, it doesnt seem that there are that many roms in progress, let alone any updated ICS roms. There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on.
Im just wondering where all the ICS roms are. If i moved over, id prob want to stick to ICS.
Anyone move from Evo to Epic Touch and feel that there are enough roms? That its being supported as much as other HTC phones?
Any input?
Depends. The Stock Touchwiz Roms from samsung has plenty of development here. The AOSP side we just barely got a CM7/KANG that has quite a few bugs. For some those bugs arent a problem, but for me it didnt pass as a daily driver.
Also the whole Clockworkmod-fused-with-the-kernel/rom on this phone will give you a headache if this is your first time rooting a Samsung Phone.
It would be my first Samsung rooting. I have looked over the instructions and saw it's somewhat different from HTC style, but nothing I can't handle.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I personally think samsung is easier when it comes to rooting, etc. I came from an evo 3d, and that was kind of a headache, especially themeing because of the .m10 files that it had. I kinda lean toward samsung though, if you cant tell by my sig.
No where
I see that no one has answered your main question...There are no ICS ROMs available as of right now...The deves are creating a base for it so when its possible to create one, they can implment it faster.
Uhhh. I guess the dev's are working on them.
I'd be stoked if you can work faster than they can, or pay them to work faster...
But it's not like changing a battery, there's a lot of work that goes into cooking a ROM.
They want to get CM7 complete and stable as a base to use for other Aosp roms. Samsung's official ICS for our device will have touchwiz and I think 95% of us don't want that. We need Aosp roms and kernels nailed down before we progress any further. Once the devs have a stable functional base to work from other doors will open. It takes time.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'm not knocking the devs or anything. I understand how ROMs work and have built my own in the past.
I guess I'm just surprised that such a popular device doesn't have any devs working on ics while ancient devices like the Evo and HD2 have multiple roms.
What matters the most to me are phones that have a large modder base. I semi expected to see this place packed with devs and other crazy stuff. Caught me off guard that it's quieter in here then in the Evo section.

I think its more because Samsung is not releasing the source code, once they put it out our esteemed devs will bring ICS very fast. HTC is very fast about everything giving out source, update etc. I am just waiting for HTC to come with some phone which is a little bit better in specs and I am getting that. Samsung phones just looks beatifull. I want a phone that works as good and is backed up by support from the Manufacturer.
The fact is the Evo is no longer that great of a phone. It's nowhere near the same league of phone that the GS2 is, ICS withstanding.
Honestly the new Touchwiz isn't that bad. The only people making a big fat fuss over it seem to be previous HTC owners. Let me tell you, sense sucks big fat donkey balls compared to Touchwiz. I was a Go Launcher devotee prior to owning the Epic Touch. Touchwiz has proved to be ok for me.
I would still be completely happy with my day one purchase of Epic Touch even if we don't end up getting ICS until mid next year, gingerbread on this thing still flies compared to every other phone out there.
Furthermore, the OG Epic had a slow but steady dev community. Half the roms I flashed on the evo ended up being kangs or just plain crappy old skins. There were a few really good ones, salvagemod was the best vanilla AOSP. But really, the OG Epic community put out some real quality stuff, albeit at a slower pace.
Honest answer: jump in, the water is fine. Yeah, ICS will be quite nice once we get it, but in the meantime, there isn't a better phone you can get on sprint than the Epic touch.

Literally was writing this verbatim! LOL. I'm guessing OP posted without looking anywhere but the EVO forum and this Q and A section or the dozens of ICS threads would have reached out and smacked him in the eye.
Coming from HTC HeroC > LG Optimus S > HTC Evo 4G > HTC Evo 3D to this I was a bit shocked to not see as many devs picking the device up as well. I think everyone is missing what OP is saying and taking it as a bash, it is a surprise that more devs are not migrating towards the E4GT when this is obviously sprint best device to date. This device has the potential to be the next Evo 4G, development wise. It is crazy fast/smooth out of the box. It is also the easiest device I have rooted to date. When I left the Evo 3D for this near launch I did so for the screen size and the Exynos Processor, not for development. Even if no AOSP roms were to come to the device, one of the modified stock roms with Go Launcher on it is all I really need, though I want CM9, lol. That said we now have CM7 in the works, and CM9 will follow soon. Our AOSP devs are leaning more daily, and taking a lot of heat for what they are doing. Even if they are getting help from _______ (fill in blank), they are still taking all they are getting and putting it together for a awesome AOSP type rom. Who else is doing that for the device? Exactly!
But yet some still bash and call them Kang Bangers
I say go for it, find a deal on CL or FleaBay and jump. You will not be disappointed one bit

The fact is the Evo is no longer that great of a phone. It's nowhere near the same league of phone that the GS2 is, ICS withstanding.

I definitely agree with you in that the Evo is old news. Which is why I'm considering the upgrade to begin with. It is showing it's age more and more.
Thank you for your input.

Coming from HTC HeroC > LG Optimus S > HTC Evo 4G > HTC Evo 3D to this I was a bit shocked to not see as many devs picking the device up as well. Considering how Nice and respectful I have been on this thread, I'm glad that you can understand EXACTLY where I'm coming from. Thank you for the information.
I'm not here to knock sgs2 nor am ragging on the hard working devs. I'm just staying a fact: there aren't very many different kinds of roms here.
And if you look in the Dev section, there are no ics roms to flash. No alphas. No betas. Nothing. I'm sure people are working on it... But there are none there RIGHT NOW.
Some of you need to chill out. I wasn't insulting you or your mom. I was asking a few questions and making an observation. Lighten up trolls.
I'll be picking up one of these this weekend, and aside from rooting and flashing calk's build (that man is amazing), I'm going to be teaching myself how Sammy does it's roms.
Does Sammy not release source code? Aren't they legally required to do this?

I really don't see anyone trolling you here. Looks like a pretty tame thread to me. My comment was probably the "harshest"if you could call it that. My main point was that you stated that no one was working on ICS and I was pointing out that it would be extremely difficult to miss the fact that several devs are in fact working on ICS, MIUI, CM7+9, AOSP and more TW custom ROM's.
I don't think any of us disagree that we wish there we more things going on, but I also think people forget that the EVO dev process was not overnight. Go back to the first EVO posts and you can see that it was several weeks from release before the customization started and a couple months before things really got going. And when the EVO came out, there was zero worthy competition. Pretty much everyone jumped on the EVO train.
I don't think that anyone here is upset by your post, but I do think it discounts the efforts that have been going on for well over a month to get ICS and the other goods to this device.
"There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on." I think that statement was the one that bothered me because it clearly showed that you were making assumptions without doing any research. And we have enough people in this forum doing plenty of that already. In fact, I have never seen more dev cooperation on any other device. Take a look at the ICS thread from the beginning and you'll see some amazing teamwork. Unfortunately derailed by demanding and entitled community members and leeches, but still alive and kicking in IRC and private spaces.
But I digress, the main point, you probably wouldn't be disappointed by picking up this phone. IMO, it is the best out right now and a quick look around will show you that the number of ROMs is about to hit a stride. The dates of release can show you that new work has just arrived and its beginning to look a lot like EVO-town in here.

Coming from the Evo 4G and writing guides and helping people on those forums for a while, I bought an E4GT.
Compared to the Evo just development wise on XDA, there aren't as many ROMs or as much development going on.
But phone wise, its a great phone and a great upgrade from the Evo 4G. Personally I use Launcher Pro/ADW so slapping that over TouchWiz is great.
Rooting is simple. There are auto roots going on and not as much of a pain as the Evo 4G. Also flashing things like Radios, ROMs, etc are faster as well because of the difference in phone speed and boot speed.
As for ICS, there was something in the works, but I think there hasn't been any much development on it.
