Are there any Replacement Shells - Captivate Accessories

like i want to change my shell to clear so i can see the internals

no chance.

oh that kind of shell. i thought you meant like the ui which is also known as the shell. nope nobody makes one. for the battery door clip to work it would need to be make out of something very sturdy and not too hard. it miht be hard to find the right type of clear platic for that. also you wouldnt see much with the battery door in place unless that was clear as well. it would be cool but it would take some pretty sophisticated molding for an accessory company and a strong yet flexable and wear resistant plastic.

Check Craigslist, lol

I think it'd be easier to get x-ray vision to see the internals than make a replacement shell. lol

New EVO Case coming soon

Hi guys,
I am the product designer from a brand new company called TridentCase. We'll have a series of EVO case coming out pretty soon.
I am an avid EVO user myself, I'd love to get opinions on the case and see how everyone here feels about it. Perhaps even for future improvement.
The case comes with 5 different colors and we are planning to have different colored wrap around silicone band for purchase so you could mix and match your own personality.
Our first 2 cases for iPhone4 made it into CNET's top 10 tough cases for iPhone, I am hoping that we'll get similar type of interest and enthusiasm from the EVO community as well.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks!
I like it, although I'm a little hesitant to jump into cases of this protection level because I don't like the bulk.
I do like the style a lot though, kind of reminds me of the sony sports walkmans from back in the day. The color options make this seem like a winner.
If those holes on the back help with heat ventilation then that's a pretty clever idea.
Thats pretty much what Ive been looking for. How hard is it to reach the notification bar?

how much bulk does it add??? i would also like to see a belt clip for this...
They look awesome!
The vents are a great idea... but how are they as dust and pocket lint collector?
and more importantly... How much are they going to cost?
agreed on the cost thing. They could be spectacular if they don't cost too much lol.

Thanks. I was a bit concerned with bulk myself, but I've been using the prototype for a few weeks now, I don't really mind the bulk much. I can definitely understand if some people might feel differently though. We'll have more slimmed design in the near future.
Yeah, those are vents for heat. My EVO do get a bit hot once in awhile, these vents are my attempt to help that situation.

With the few weeks that I've been using, I haven't have any dust or lint collected in them. I am not entirely sure how much they will retail, (that's up to sales department) but I think it will somewhere in the ballpark of $29-$39.
These look like a win to me. I assume the screen is open, and not covered like the otterbox defender?
The prototype in the photos are opened, but the final product will have a clear screen, we figure if customers don't like the screen to be covered can easily remove the screen protection, that way at least there's an option.

They look really nice, what type of material is it made out of and how is the texture? Considering I'm using a $5 clear case off of ebay $30-40 seems a little steep for my taste, but if you want to send me a test unit I'd gladly review it for you
ETA? both otterbox defender and ballistic have been "coming soon" for months....

Do you have a website??? how is it going to go for? where will I be able to buy? and if you make a belt clip, will it be compatible with this?
You should make a version with a clear back instead of that color portion. Not too many cases will show off the back. How about a bumper style protection for the evo?

Just got my new Otterbox Impact Case...

With all the talk about the Otterbox Defender ($50), haven't heard much press on the Otterbox Impact ($19.95 / $15 after discounts).
Anyway, my Otterbox Defender was a disaster so I got this instead and I gotta say, it is REALLY nice. The rubber is solid yet soft, fits ubersnug and the screen protector is THICK and high quality. For about $15 I am VERY pleased.
** Just put on the screen protector - no lint, bubbles easy to squeeze out - love it! This MUCH nicer than the Defender.
I am just amazed by this case. Just a simple silicone case but the silicone quality is so high and smooth feeling without being overly soft. The screen protector is thick and with zero finger drag. I honestly don't know why anyone would need more protection than this. The Defender is pure overkill.

Ordered a couple of the Impact Series case's from otterbox site, hoping thy don't take as long as some of their cases have for people. Was leaning towards the trident case but after looking around decided to go with this. As far as cases go, a good silicon is all I really need so I'm excited to see how these then out. Glad to hear you like it, as with any case I've heard mixed results but I'm eager to see it in person.

I bought and love the Commuter case. Has silicone core with plastic around it. Not big or heavy. Plus it doesn't catch pocket lint.

Even though the case is just silicone, it is pure quality. The screen protector is awesome too.

Looked at the commuter, I guess if I'm not feeling the Impact I could get that, all the stores around here carry that one and that one alone.
I keep reading about lint and or various fibers, which I don't necessarily foresee as being an issue (lint free), but do the grooves / textured backing catch stuff a lot? Like I said I'm not too worried, only curious.
And as far as the screen protector goes, I just use the ones Sprint sells. Have some extras so will see how different thr otterbox one is. Zero issues with this Sprint branded generic one, touch input / sensitivity or otherwise. Might just leave it.

Lint isn't a big problem because although this case is silicone it is a higher grade silicone and a bit harder than typical cheaper cases. The screen protector is nice because it is extra thick plastic so it is easier to get rid of bubbles.
To prevent lint and scratches just grab a microfiber glasses case from your local mall and slip your EVO into that before placing it in your pocket

Hmm, just got mine. Yesterday actually, but was sleeping. Initial impressions are mixed ... case is extremely loose on the sides. Guess I thought it would have been a snuggled fit with the "harder silicon" but it really is quite loose. To the point of it being a little bothersome. Not sure how much of an issue it'll be over the course of a day but a slight brush moves it. I dunno. Feels comfortable in the hand(s) though. Will have to give it a few days.

Weird. Mine literally could not be any more snug. There is no wiggle room at all.
If you mean that you can flip the edge a bit with your finger, well its silicone I personally don't find that bothersome at all.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Hah yes, right it is silicone and I know there is a lot of surface "area" between the edges but it seems flimsier than I would have imagined. As I said I thought, as read, that it had harder silicon. And I've had silicon cases for various devices and with most, once on, fit rather snug.
And with the backing ... noticed it seems to collect various "particle" stuff but can easily be wiped away. The one most often voiced concerning doesn't seem to be an issue. Doesn't seem to pull on my pocket lining. I like it but the flimsy edging is really bothering me. It even seems to stick out in the middle on the left / right sides. To the point if you push it you can see it press in to the side of the phone. I dunno ... I have 2 so it doesn't appear to be a defect ....

Dunno dude. Mine doesn't stick out at the sides at all. It is a VERY snug fit and the silicone on the sides is quite thick and not even remotely flimsy.
Don't know what to say. :-( The fit on mine simply could not be any tighter.

I got the impact case and used it for two weeks. The sides become flimsy with time with all the times you pull it out of your pocket. It's a nice case. But the sides becoming flimsy started to bug me. It also added bulk to it not alot but still adds some. I loved the grip though awesome.
I went to a sprint store and tried out the commuter case. Loved it, hard casing with rubber skin. Its a bit slippery though. But the case isnt bulky and fits the phone like a glove. Only thing I dislike is the bottom plug that protects the hdmi and usb. It opens up at times. But it's not a big deal. I get compliments on the commuter case as well pricey but I think its worth it. Both cases are great though. If the impact case didnt get flimsy with time it would still be on my phone the grip is great.

With all your raving about this case I had to see what the hubbub was about. Ordered mine yesterday. Thanks for the heads up, OP.
I do like the case, but still the edging on the sides is my only beef. Was thinking; I use these regular old screen protectors that cover just the screen and the one that came with case seems to cover most of front of phone. And wondering if maybe the little extra space would result in the front being more snug. Maybe not as its not that thick. Either way I'm liking it. The grip feels very nice.

that's what they said about the original moto droid. i really hope they change their minds..
i think the portfolio is exactly what i wanted and wouldnt have designed it any differently. 3 tilting angles, folds over to be used laying flat on a table, fits in dock without being removed, and then gives it total protection when carrying it around.
very happy with mine.

I don't think think anyone would say it doesn't have its positives. It does somethings very well, others ok and somethings that make me think "huh." We're just disappointed with how glaring the negatives are. I've owned many portfolio style cases for different products and never see one as poorly thought out as this one.
Having to open it to charge is ridiculous. Hard plastic tabs that leave wear marks is also ridiculous.

I agreed. $40 for a not-quite excellent designed case. Even though it fits the Xoom nicely, it's not totally accessible, take the power charger, usb port for example, which are blocked entirely from bottom. Greatly disappointed. It's no good for protection, too. Reports of possible scratches. Luckily, I was being rather careful. "=/
I'm looking forward to see new cases popping up in the near future. I'm surprised no company has gone into making some for Xoom. Unlike Apple's products would've already been in production before devices actually get out. Like the iPad 2 case. =P

You can easily rub away any marks that are made by the portfolio case.
My only complaint is that when lying flat while having the plastic piece on the bottom of the xoom, the gap in the plastic doesn't expose the hole for the charger, but all I have to do is fold it differently.
Overall I like this case alot, and consider all the complainers to be whining about nothing.
Honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about. If anyone is looking to pick this up I would suggest a trip to your local bestbuy and tell them that motorola has it for 25% off and ask them to match it. It worked perfectly for me and it makes the price a whole lot more reasonable. Now about the case itself, I don't understand how anyone can complain about it covering the charging or usb ports while using it propped up in landscape position. The reason I think it is not a valid issue is because no matter what case you use or even if you don't use a case at all, if you sit the xoom on a table in landscape with charging port and usb port on the bottom you won't be able to charge it or use the usb. That is because of the design of the tablet itself not the case. I bought the case and i love it, it doesn't scratch my xoom at all and i'm not sure how anyone else is scratching theirs. There's my two penny's
My Xoom arrives today, and this portfolio case arrives tomorrow. Good info. Looks like at the minimum I will be filing down those tention locking nubs for the bottom.
I never understood why people made protective cases that damaged the devices they were setup to protect.
With the locking nubs filed down it should get the job done until a better case comes out.

It doesn't damage anything. It leaves a mark that is easily rubbed away. It's harder clean your finger smugs from the screen, than it is to clean the temporary marks left by the case.

Wow, do you want to protect your $40 case or your $800 device? They can be easily rubbed away now but over time that will continue to wear causing permanent damage. As the other poster stated, we purchase these cases to protect our devices.
Call me a whiner all you want but I dont want my very expensive Xoom to look like a POS in 2 months. I've owned lots of well designed portfolio cases and not one has left any mark behind. They just do their job, protect well and are easy to use.

Budget metal bumper

I'm on a REALLY tight budget, and I've found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminum-Bu...VG/ref=sr_1_67?ie=UTF8&qid=1352551327&sr=8-67
Has somebody tried it before? Do the cover-buttons have a good response (is much more force needed to make them "click")? Any suggestions?
while it might provide a unique look to your phone, i'm not sure how much 'protection' a metal bumper will give.
once that aluminum meets concrete, it'll scratch/dent and it wont look as pretty.
I had an Element Case Vapor AR15-V when it was released for the iP4. I loved the look but it killed my reception..
I don't think/know if the S3 would fall victim to such an issue..

The aesthetic side of it is of no importance for me. On the reception issue, it was reportedly due to the antenna being linked to a section of the metal frame the iPhones had, so no problem here regarding the S3 i pressume.

That link says it's 13~, but in Amazon UK all Dragon design cases I find are around 70€. Right now I've found this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Otterbox-Co...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352662906&sr=1-1
well. the otterbox is not a bumper as well, so that's up to you. i had the commuter for the htc DZ and while it is nice, it also doubled the size of the phone.
and yeah, i didn't say the nicer bumpers were cheap,. i said they were expensive.

Request: Metal Back

I'm not sure the actual reasoning behind Moto's choice for a plastic back, but based on the reports of backs cracking the plastic seems really brittle. I wonder if it's not an ABS plastic, and that's why it cracks so easily.
I'd love to see someone fab a metal alternative. Maybe something out of AL or otherwise. The overall shape doesn't seem difficult, but maybe for cost sake would be "cheaper" to stamp than fab.
Open to input.
I contacted the 3d printing company for a backcover solution. They can produce something to reinforce the back as it is to breakable now. Mine broke like after 2 days. And I cant send it back cause im from the Netherlands. I need someone to come up with someting to protect it for breaking any further.

induction charging will gain interference with a metal back, but depending on thickness and material, you can mitigate this appropriately. The watch doesn't need thick metal, just something with more substance than what's currently there.
could look into a 3d printed option too!
Why is this in accessories?
