[Q] freeze after recovery - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

opps, trying to install a custom rom (had 1 previously but fancied another) but it keeps freezing,
after i select "recovery" it doesnt matter what i select after that it freezes at the hat and orange circle, starting to get that sinking feeling
edit, it goes to the bowler hat with the ornge circle and just stays their, if i press the power button i get the
rebbot
apply update
wipe data
etc but they all stop at the bowler hat

try any of clockwork's mount options (ie 'mount /system') and report here.
edit: some more questions - are you able to boot normally in your last rom? If you are, and the rom is working as before, then re-flashing cwm (either trough rom manager or manually - adb or hboot) can fix your issue.

Boot looping issue

Was messing around with my phone flashing roms to see what I liked best and got too far ahead of myself and forgot to wipe data and cache. Now, I'm stuck in some kind of "boot loop" and can't get back into ClockWorkRecovery(Via root) to perform a restore. My computer just isn't recognizing that I have my phone connected now although it did previously. Is there anything I can do in this situation, or am I basically screwed?
Edit: I solved the issue on my own, it just took lots of playing around and disconnecting/reconnecting before I was able to get back into CWR. If a mod sees this, go ahead and delete this thread it has no purpose.
HELP
Please, i have the same issue
My phone has been bootlooping for a week now, so much i decided to give up.
Please please please tell me how you got back to clockwork and then from there what to do
Thank you so so much in advance
My guess, and this is only a guess, is to try the following.
Assuming you have already flashed the ENG build...
1. Place a new update.zip (clockwork recovery) onto root of the phone's SD card (probably using a card reader, just to be on the safe side).
1.5 Turn the Phone off, if it's on.
2. Hold down Volume Down + Power Button to turn on the phone and boot into the phone's default recovery.
3. Press Volume Up + Power button to get the selectable menu.
4. Select the "Apply update.zip" option (2nd one down).
5. This should boot you into the Clockwork Recovery.
From there, locate the ROM you want to use that's meant for the Slide (like SlidemeRoot 5).
1. Download the ROM.
2. Navigate to the mount menu in clockwork and select the option to mount the card as USB Mass Storage.
3. Plug the phone into the PC (via USB cable).
4. Copy the ROM to the card.
(My trick here is to redownload ROMs. I've seen my phone bootloop when the ROM doesn't download all the way.)
1. Unmount USB.
2. Navigate to the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option.
3. Select Yes from the menu to wipe everything.
4. Locate the install any zip option and install the ROM
5. When that's done, select the reboot option.
From here, you can just leave the phone alone until it boots. If you worry or want to watch, use adb to watch the logs.
1. In command prompt, navigate to where you have ADB installed.
2. type in: adb logcat
3. Enjoy.
For me, the first boot for SlidemeRoot took at least a minute. I could see the logs rolling along, so I just left it alone until the logs slowed down and then stopped. By then, the phone looked like it was ready to go (complete with normal screen, signal, and everything).
I did the same thing, but I havent flashed my rom with the eng build, is there anything I can do, or is my phone hosed? My phone wont boot, and I cant get it to boot up in clockwork, so I cant reflash it...

Stoopid noob CM7 question

Ok here goes.
How do I know if it installed ok??
I got my Defy about a week ago and straight away followed the excellent procedure in the CM7 FAQ. I'm totally new to modding phones (came from iPhone) and CM7 etc, but am pretty good with computers etc.
So anyway, I had some issues, all of which I got past. No heart attack moments! I know I've got the Nordic ROM on there (I have the red Motorola logo on boot and have read lots of forum posts that point to that. Also, System Version ends in "ND" and firmware is 2.2.2). Thing is, I am loathe to mess with things that don't need messing with (I need a phone that works!!) and the install seemed to go absolutely fine.
I don't see a skateboard guy on startup which i probably enough. Have searched posts etc and not found a conclusive answer. If it's not CM7 then I'll have to try again. Annoying having installed various apps, added to phonebook etc.
Sorry about this.
next up, you need to root your phone using something like super one click, then re-boot it. next install 2ndinit defy, and follow the instructions provided in the app.
copy the cm7 zip to your SD card, if you haven't done so already, also try loading the swype app zip as well ( posted somewhere else on here)
when you re-boot you should get a blue light not long after the red M logo, press the volume down button at this point.
to navigate round the boot menu and recovery use the volume up and down to highlight an option and the power button to select.
select recovery, ( i use latest) and you should be able to find an option for back up/restore, make a back up of your current set up as a "safety net" if you want.
Next wipe data/factory re set then wipe cache, re-boot.
from the blue light press vol down, and go back to recovery, then select install zip from SD card.
again use vol+/- to select - press vol + to go straight to the bottom of the list, and load the CM7 zip, then load the swype zip, re-boot and job done.
Cheers mate
I reckon it's the 2nd Init bit. Will have another tinker tomorrow
It worked! Seems to me the only difference is that the first time round I did not reboot back into recovery after clearing cache...
Thanks very much for the advice.

[Q] Recovery and/or Wipe not working.

OK, so I have my wife's old Incredible that was Rooted with Unrevoked. It was kept stock Rooted.
She got an Incredible 2 and I now want to sell her old Incredible. Tried to Wipe data and SD Card using the Data and Storage Settings menu. The phone acts like it is doing both things, but doesn't actually format the SD Card, and when doing a Factory Reset, the phone reboots and acts like it is wiping the data. When it boots back up, her background is still there and there are a bunch of widgets that say "Problem Loading Widget" on them. It does seem to remove some items as email accounts are reset, GMail, etc. are all wiped.
So, I reboot into Recovery to try and reflash the stock Radio, put S-On, and install the stock ROM, but no matter what I choose in Clockwork Recovery, I get a "blank" screen after choosing a menu item. For example, when I go to "Install Zip from Sdcard," It will take the input and where it would normally ask what Zip I want to install, it only shows the background of CWR. If I try to Wipe Data, where normally it would have all the menu options with "NO" and the one that says "Yes - Wipe Data," that menu never shows up.
So, I can't fully wipe the thing, and I can't seem to flash stock Boot, Recovery, etc. to get this back to stock so I can sell it.
Any ideas?
I'll try helping you out.
1) download a new Incredible recovery from dougpiston.com/ and follow his directions above the downloads.
2) reboot into hboot (you can also turn off phone then hold vol down + power). It should prompt for an update, which you should accept. Let your phone do it's thing, it may take several minutes or longer.
3) Once you have a new recovery, delete that PB31IMG recovery file.
Your recovery should work as expected now. Btw, where did you download the s-on file from?

I downloaded both the Stock recovery, flashed and got a picture of a phone with a Red Exclamation point on it. I then downloaded CWR 3.0.0.8 and flashed that, this time it goes into recovery but does the same thing the other one does: Shows the menu options but then the screen goes blank if I try to choose an option.
EDIT: Holy poop, I think I know what the issue was all along! Basically, I was thinking that recovery worked like my Thunderbolt in that the Vol +/- was how to scroll in CWR menus and the PWR button was the select. Turns out that you use the trackball to both scroll AND select menus in CWR on the DInc!
I just wiped the device in CWR and it is booting up. I already sold the phone to a friend and she told me to keep it Rooted with a stock ROM on it, so I don't have to go any further provided that it wipes properly!
Well as long as it works!

Booting only CWM -> how to exit Android boot menu ?

Hello,
2nd-init apk from the marked was not able to download anything, i assume it may come from a locked address by my carrier (SFR - France), so i downloaded a "full" previous version.
-> Installed, root acces given, everything was fine
-> Reboot, i entered CWM automaticaly...
What's where i have problem, what ever i choose, my mobile always boot into CWM, i thing it is because i did not put any data in clockworkmod directory.
When booting, i instantly go to Android Boot menu by Cyanogen and never get a blue led.
The only option to go out :
-1- Menu "Boot"
-2- Menu "Set Default"
-3- Choose [normal]
-4- Go Back (2 times)
-5- [Reboot System]
After doing it i was able to "start" my phone, the blue led appears on start as expected to re-enter the boot menu.
I hope it may help some other people.
Do someone know where to find a "guide book" of CWM ?
What ROM do you have on the Defy atm? Is it Froyo or CM/MIUI?
For Froyo you should set "normal" as default in the bootmenu (Set default option), while for CM7/MIUI you should set "2nd-init". What you are experiencing is the normal behavior of 2nd init because it has the bootmenu selected as default after installation.
Yes, it seems to be the normal behaviour for my froyo rom, but i was not able to find any help/subject explaining which behaviour is "normal" and how to set it when you only want it to flash some zip files. Thanks for your confirmation.
I flashed a GPS fix file... since it seems not capable to use AGPS data (even if i flashed the France.zip file, GPS status can't fix agps anymore) but at least it is capable to do a "stadard" fix and it is not frozing my phone anymore when moving.
I have met this problem before.it's be ok after i chang one.

[Q] Help, stuck in reboot loop

Basically I was running stock 2.2 on my phone and did the usual steps to root it, unrevoked 3 ran all fine clockworkmod recovery flashed fine, booted up first time round fine. But then I flashed the most recent version of super user and now every time I try to boot it just gets to the HTC logo turns itself off and starts again.
I have tried backing up and restoring, wiping data, sd, cache, dalvik and nothign has helped so far. And I can run the RUU for my phone because it wont run unless I am booted into android, please help me ><
SERIOUSLY? You didn't even LOOK.. not going to mention about searching.. There are SO many threads that could have helped you.. but the most obvious one to me would be the big TROUBLESHOOTING one that is right on the top of everything.
Right, sorry I did quickly look but I panicked a little bit. I shall make sure I look more effectively in the future ^^
I would use ADB to flash the old super user apk, or to flash a new rom.
If you're STILL stuck:

BOOT PROBLEMS
"I just flashed a new ROM, and I get a bootloop.. Help!"*
"I just flashed a new ROM, and it just stays on the HTC screen"
"My phone randomly rebooted itself and now it won't boot"
*This is a fairly common problem, and is solved very easily.
Possible causes of bootloops/ phone stuck on HTC Screen:
- You are S-OFF, and you have not got the correct partition table that is required for the ROM.
- Some ROM's require an SD-EXT partition, you either have not got this or have not done it correctly.
- For whatever reason, the ROM did not install properly.
[1]To fix a bootloop/ stuck on HTC Screen:
[STEP1]- do a battery pull to power off the device (as this is the only way to do so when stuck in a bootloop)
[STEP2]- hold the VOLUME DOWN button and the POWER button to boot into the bootloader
[STEP3]- use the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons to navigate, and POWER to select. Navigate to RECOVERY.
[STEP4]- select "mounts & storage" and then select the following options
[STEP5]- format boot
[STEP6]- format system
[STEP7]- format data
[STEP8]- format cache
[STEP9]- format sd-ext (IF YOU HAVE IT)
[IF YOU HAVE A BACKUP]
[STEP10a]- go back to the main menu, select "back up & restore", select "restore" and restore the latest working backup.
[IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP]
[STEP10b]- go back to the main menu, select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", and flash a ROM which you KNOW works. If you have none, try my failsafe: CyanogenMod
- reboot system now
#PHONE STILL DOESN'T BOOT#
[IF YOU USED YOUR BACKUP, OR A ROM THAT IS NOT CYANOGENMOD]
- Repeat the process, and flash cyanogenmod instead of restoring a backup or a different ROM.
[IF YOU ARE USING A RECOVERY THAT IS NOT CLOCKWORKMOD 2.5.0.7]
- Download Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7.zip and place it in your sdcard.
- boot into recovery, select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard" and choose "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip"
- repeat [1] from [STEP4] onwards
