[Q] what is the best radio to use - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

what is the best radio to use

just try different ones and flash the correct RIL and u will see wich one is good for you...
i use the radio for my build (base)
br

Subjective.
And depends entirely on your current set up.
What works well for one person may not work well for you.
The honest and most accurate answer is whichever radio works best for you on your phone with your ROM on your Network in the locations you use the phone in.
Plus add-in battery vs performance to all that too.
Give each at least a days trial though.

To be honest the reason i asked is today i have trouble recieving texts today since i instaled tashak rom i an recieve calls send text and make calls but i cant recieve text...
I though maybe i had corrupted my radio i am usihg 26.4.02.17.m2

Sorry, I don't believe that is radio related.
But there really is no harm in trying a new radio. I'd start with the newest and work back (unless the ROM dev recommends a radio in which case start with that one).

i was worried about trying anything newer as i heard you cannot downgrade is that correct ?

As long as you have Radio S-OFF (and I'd also recommend ENG S-OFF) then you can play till your hearts content.
That's why I'm happy to start with the newest.

Thank you for your help i think i will just go for the newest, I just have to find the newest one could you possibly point me in the right direction

No worries.

Radio, Radio update explanation please

I have been happily flashing ROM's, creating a Goldcard for a couple of weeks since getting my Hero and have just done a Radio update. I just realised I have no idea what the Radio update actually does.
Could someone explain in fairly simple terms what it is all about, I guess I have cat blood and curiosity has got the better of me
Sure. The radio update flashes the software on the little 'chip' that deals with mobile network/GPS/WiFI/Bluetooth etc. (basically all communications).
The update changes the software to a newer version, which can give better signal and battery life (It's a bit like flashing a normal ROM, except it's only for the communications hardware or baseband as iPhone users call it).
For more info, see http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-update-zip-format-for-gsm-hero/#entry1059164 which also gives you a list of them
Thanks for the prompt reply and simple terms. I am almost getting to the stage where I am qualified to make a phone call
Ah, great, I was wondering about this too. Is there any difference which radio rom you flash apart from GSM/CDMA? (My Hero has a suspicious "EU" in it which the roms I've seen online have not. Might just be some versioning, but then again it might be "europe"...)
How do you update your radio? Do you have to wipe?
EU doesnt mean europe, it is a way of identifying the radio version, like there is JU, JH, etc.
I found this out from other sources in the mean while (and forgot about this thread; it's been a couple of weeks after all), but thanks for replying anyway, it'll surely help the next guy wondering.

In the link posted a few posts up, you'll find the radio updates in the update.zip format needed to update via recovery mode, like any other custom ROM flash to your phone. However, Radio updates are typically included in the official RUU updates as well, but those will obviously unroot your phone.
Aside from increasing battery life/signal strength, radio updates can bring bugfixes and features. Newer OS ROMs typically work best with the latest Radio ROMs. After I rooted, I had an "EU" radio on my Telus Hero, and I couldn't make long distance calls unless the phone number had a "+" in front of it in my contact list. Updating the radio fixed that. Hope this info helps.
yeah it helped
But i dont understand the order of updating. First i transfer the update of the ROM to the phone and call it update.zip and the flash that ROM. But then i have to boot up the phone, to transfer the new radio and boot that.
Can it be true that i have to boot the phone and then tranfer the new radio, and the go into bootloader and flash the new update.zip?

OK. Well, the file doesn't *have* to be called update.zip. The recovery image has an option to choose a zip file, which makes things much much easier, as you can flash several files without rebooting, although I believe you have to reboot as part of the radio flash process. With this in mind, I would flash the OS update first, then the radio update. However, it really doesn't matter what order you flash them in. While the OS and radio rely on each other for the phone to operate properly, they are completely separate and individual from a flashing standpoint. They both get flashed in the exact same way from the recovery image, however with the radio, rebooting the phone is a necessary part of the process. If you were (for some dumb reason) to flash the radio and then remove the battery before the phone had completely rebooted, you'd end up with a broken (and possibly bricked) phone.
I wouldn't flash a radio without having an os installed, so if you have wiped then flash an os first. Just to make sure everything goes smooth.
A new radio file won't install until you do the first boot after installing which from memory is forced on you, so you will want to have a rom installed.
Thanks for the information about radio, quite useful. I have tried several ROMs lately but haven´t touched the radio yet. I guess if update to more recent one can improve battery and signal as it has been mentioned before.
I will try and see how my Hero behaves

Yeah once again just make sure you install the radio for your phone type.
E.g. GSM (I am guessing as you are on this forum and not he sprint one)

So basically you just have to watch out if the radio is for GSM or CDMA and then you are good to go?

A little confused about radios...

Surely by the title you can tell I am a noob. I would like to flash my first cooked rom but I have a question before I get started. I've been doing a LOT a reading to make sure I get this right the first time, however I haven't found anything that specifically helps me concerning radios.
How do I know which one to choose? Do I just automatically use the one specified by the chef, even if it is for a different region? I really don't know how to go about choosing the correct radio, if it is chosen by where I am, or where I go? Or what Rom I choose, or what network I am on? Does any of this even matter or do I just go along with the specified radio????? Do I have to flash a radio for the phone to even work or does the stock one remain? Any help is appreciated guys, thanks.

You'll just have to experiment to get the best result. Flashing ROMs requires a lot of time and testing. Some ROMs will come with a radio suggested and some won't. Just stick with your currentl readio and see how well it works. If you're having problems after a few days, try a different radio.
As far as ROMs go, you just need to know what kind of phone you have: CDMA or GSM. Don't mix them and you'll be fine.

The simple-and-true answer about "which radio" is that there really doesn't seem to be a "best-radio-for-ATT" or "best-for-northern-california" or "best-for-Valky-roms". Have you seen/read the GSM Radio sticky thread in the ROM Development sub-forum?
That being said, you might try 4.49.25.91 and/or 4.49.25.77 -- both very popular.
Just like flashing a custom OS-rom, you need to run the Hard-spl first. If you haven't yet, read "Flashing Your first GSM rhodium rom" on the Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development forum.
If you have a Sprint or Verizon phone then you need to read/flash stuff on the CDMA subforum.
Ok. Just a game of trial and error, I see. I'm working on downloading everything and learning how to do this precisely to not mess up! Thanks for the info!!!

Confused about Radio Images

Right, as the title says.. I'm pretty new to this game and it's pretty frustrating, trying to trawl Google and this forum for something which can tell me about what a Radio Image is.
I want to use one of MoDaCo roms, which is used in the Online Kitchen as it's pretty nifty to pick and choose what you want, and what you don't! (I'm not so much of a fan of the Sense UI, been using another UI).
I'm confused about the Radio Image, being on Orange and in the UK, should I include the "32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04" or, if I install the ROM without it, will my phone work properly, or get locked? I'm currently on "32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11".
Sorry for sounding like a newbie, it's because I am! But I'm getting there slowly
Dan.
Being on Orange you can't install any other radio than what your phone is provided with, shame really. You can purchase an unlock code and then flash any radio you want though.
Thanks for the clarification! Muchos appreciated. That's pretty strange, so after you purchase an unlock code, you can flash any radio, and it'll be unlocked for good? Now that's impressive
the radio is not the radio you think of like an fm radio
the software radio controls communications within the phone, this included GSM, 3G, WIFI, BLUETOOTH etc
with the latest roms this updated radio is required as it contains features the rom needs, an outdated rom will therefore not be compatible anymore.
remember that once flashing a radio to never interrupt the process, the phone will reboot several times by itself and seem to be turned off but once you've flashed the radio just do NOT touch it, it will restart itself i promise or else you could end up with a brick
yes with orange you need to first unlock your phone and then you can install whatever radio/rom your heart wishes
You're both stars, and that is exactly what I will be doing! Mm, I've never ended up with a HTC Paperweight, let's hope this doesn't occur!

[REQ] Radio 2.15.x

Looks like Adrenalyne's server is down.... bandwith exceeded. Can someone post a link to the radio if you've downloaded and have it?
Want to Got to CM6 RC3 today, but won't do it w/o the radio updated. Would prefer something I can just run through HBOOT like a ZIP.
Thanks, If you post, please provide directions on how to install.
Again, Thanks.
You don't need the 2.15 radio to use CM6RC3. I'm using the 2.05 radio just fine.
i thought the 2.15 was much better then 2.05...
From what I read it's a hit or miss. Some people take longer to charge battery, or some slower/faster speeds on 3g. I would stick with the 2.05 radio.

Correct, you'll get a brick.
I mean... if you name it correctly, HBOOT will find the file and ask you if you want to upgrade your radio and recovery... this should be easy. Plus, it flashes recovery, so you probably don't want to be IN recovery whilst flashing recovery.
Maybe we need to redo the wiki entry; right now it looks like something from Wikipedia, when what it should have are the instructions for flashing radios (complete with warnings), flashing ROMs, battery stats reset directions, etc. Then new-comers wouldn't have to wade through these threads that are becoming bloated with the same questions and answers.

As an Incredible owner, and a budding annoying noob, I would welcome the ability to find this information in the wiki. I've spent several hours over the last two days scouring threads and the wiki and am still pretty confused.
I made what I now think was a mistake in applying Unrevoked Forever. My end goal was to get Skyraider Vanilla going on my Dinc, and I've just been feeling my way through the process. I've hacked other stuff before and thought I could find my way through with the help of awesome, helpful folks like yourselves, but I'm currently feeling like I'm in over my head.
My sense is that I need to flash my radio from the stock 1.00.03.04.06 to the 2.15 and then load Skyraider Vanilla ... but the Unrevoked folks are clear to say that when you have Forever you should flash all partitions simultaneously, so now I'm worried about what flashing the radio to 2.15 might do before I load Skyraider. And, I have read all the info. on flashing radios and taken it to heart - I am sufficiently afraid of bricking my phone.
But now that I have Forever I'm worried about what happens when the official 2.2 update comes out. I haven't found any instructions that make it clear enough to me how to handle that.
I don't expect anyone to clean up the mess I made, but I would certainly be grateful for some more noob-oriented details in the wiki. I'd also be happy to help with that effort, if there was anything I could do.
Thanks for all the great, free and often thankless work you do to keep technology open.

Unrevoked forever is only a mistake if you need to get warranty work done.... If that's the case, you have two choices... hope that the noob tech at vzw doesn't realize you have s-off or get insurance and say it was "stolen"
You can flash a radio pretty safely w/o worrying about bricking AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FLASH THE SAME EXACT RADIO TWICE IN A ROW (like if it failed the first time or something. MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR RADIO VERSION IN HBOOT BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING). If you don't upgrade your hboot (stay on 77) you'll be fine with the new radio. Don't make a practice of flashing radio's though as it's not very safe to do it all the time. I would recommend that if you have hboot 77, upgrade the radio to either 2.05 or 2.15 using the file attached in this thread, or directly from adrenylines site. To be 100% sure, I'd compare md5sum's to be sure before flashing it. Then flash SkyRaider. Make sure to do a wipe before doing so. I'm running 77, 2.15x, and CM6 RC3 w/o problems and love it. I'm a fan of CM6 hardcore, so SkyRaider is pretty much the best sense unless you use adrenylines Second Wave.... PM me if you have any q's. I'll help you out.

Thank you so much! It's so "incredible" that folks like you are willing to help make this stuff accessible to noobs like me.
I have some heavy meetings in the next few days that I need my phone for, so it may be a few days before I can give it a go, but I will post my progress/results here. I have been thinking about the CM6 ROM, as I'm looking to see what true vanilla android is like, so maybe I'll give that a go.
My main concern with any ROM is Exchange ActiveSync, as I need that for work. There aren't many comments from folks about this at all, so I guess I'll just need to give it a go and find out for myself.

HTC pays for Exchange licensing I believe, so the BEST integration is going to be with a sense Rom. I believe that CM6 does have some Exchange "add-in's" to make it run better, but sense will have better exchange then plain vanilla (remember, except CM6). <- you can always check their change log. I know it has something in it for Exchange that you can take and investigate further.
Wait for official release of new radio?
One quick question. I just ready yet another page (can't post the link, since I'm a noob) explaining the possibility that the supposedly-coming-soon official update could include a new version of the radio that won't play nice with the leaked version. Specifically, it said, "Some figure there is a 50/50 chance that applying the leak, and then applying the final OTA update will brick your phone – making it completely useless."
Any thoughts on the probability of that being the case. I don't want to be yet another person asking "should I go for it," but I am curious what the smart ones around here think about the probability of the official update causing problems if you flashed the leaked radio.

Well, first, please provide me the post, you can type hxxt:// instead so you can post it here.
The "official" OTA is supposed to be coming August 18th (take that with a grain of salt) so not much more wait. If what you read is true, then I would imagine that it's a simple downgrade of whatever your current radio is to stock 1.xx and Hboot will be 77 or 79 whichever you have (b/c both were shipped originally with phone, they're not leaks) which we CAN do, then upgrade to official radio from stock. I can't see how that would brick anything since that's basically what would happen on a stock phone. IF YOU'RE CAREFUL, you can do just about anything you want to your phone, then they return it to stock (aside from S-OFF at this time)....

No Worries! I might recommend that if the update comes out on the 18th you just use that for a while. You can still root it, put new kernels on it (that I'm sure someone will put out), erase / install apps, etc... and that should carry you over nicely until you've read up on things and are ready to jump into this head first.
Like I said, whenever you're ready, pm me if you have q's I'll do my best to answer them. I'll read the post you mentioned and If I find anything worth writing home about I'll update this thread.
Good Luck.... and don't feel bad. I use this as my primary device too, so I usually err on the side of caution as well. A quick suggestion, sometimes it's easier to search what you're looking for on google then XDA directly. You can google something like XDA Incredible radio 2.15 upgrade and I've gotten more accurate results with goog then XDA... i weird but sometimes works better, sometimes works worse.....
Again, good luck!

Thanks for your concern... I do have Unrevoked forever flashed on my device, so how do I go about loading the new 2.15 Radio? I followed the last set of instructions I read and the flash didn't take, still have radio 2.05.00.06.11.

With all that said, out of all the ROM's I've tried so far I like SkyRaider the best. I know the 2.5 Rom took, but I don't think the 2.5.2 version took to my phone. I also want to upgrade the Radio and add the latest version of Flash. The last few flashes I've done (2.5.2, radio, and Flash) haven't seemed to work. Unrevoked Forever has been the only thing that has actually flashed successfully.
What should I do?

[Q] Two issues I am .

I have been having
Issue 1:
In the past 2-3 weeks, when I am on a phone call I am able to hear the other person, but they are not unable to me.
This does not happen every call, just some, both inbound and outbound.
I have tried multiple ROMs but it does not seem to help (ROMs tested: CM7, Virtuous Doubleshot v1.0.1 and RCMix3D KINGDOM)
If it matters, I'm with VodaFONE in Australia, but this happens even when I have full coverage.
Looking at the whole next to the micro usb port it seems to be clear.
Is this a software or hardware issue? Is there anything I can do to fix it besides un-root and RMA?
Issue 2:
While listening to music or watching a movie, my phone will start to use "voice search" without me prompting it to.
Is this a common issue or something that I can easily fix? (I have no real need for this, so if there's a way to uninstall it, I really wouldn't mind).
If I need to un-root and RMA I will, but I would prefer not to. If there is other information requested, just ask and I will do my best to answer.
kernels And Radio
Have you tried changing radio and kernel of the phone??
Flash a newer radio and change the ril's in the rom you're using to fully utilize the new radio properly.
You may be using an older radio, and the rom probably is probably using ril's for a newer or different radio than what's installed on you device, thus causing your issues.
flash it back to original and send it to Vodafone, because this sounds like a bigger problem....

I dont think the problem is quite that big. It doesnt seem like a hardware fault because if it was a hardware fault then it would be most if not all calls that are affected if the microphone didnt work. He says that it is only some which leads me to believe it is a software error. A different radio and matching RIL's should fix it.
Look on the ROM description page of the ROM you are using and install the radio that it recommends. It will already have matching RIL's for it.
... a lot of people do the downgrade to 1.32 to root, and forget to update the radio when they start using custom rom's built off newer builds that originally come with newer radio builds...
mind you, the op's problems are some of the lesser that i've come across... quite tame actually
If you're using the RCMix Kingdom Rom, use Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M
Thanks for all the help. Will try flashing a new radio and shall come back here to say if it worked or not.
