I run nandroid with a new partitioned SD-card.
I partitioned the SD-Card under Windows to 28GB FAT32 and 2 GB Ext-2
The backup process nevertheless says
"E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (file exists)
could not mount sd-ext. sd-ext backup may not be supported on this device"
any ideas?
It has to be EXT3. Not EXT2. I'd use the phone to create the partition then upgrade it to EXT3.
On a side note, I didn't know Windows could create an EXT partition as it's a Linux file system.

The same way that Linux supports Windows file systems like NTFS - additional drivers!

Excellent, thanks for that Dave. You never stop learning in here
Forgive my noobness but what advantage does having the ext3 partition have? Is it required?
Thanks

I use a driver tweak to make my SD reader a HDD.
Then I just setup my SD card with ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 2010. It let'S you install a new HDD with various file formats
This post is for people scared of Linux (like me)
I finally found a way to partition a SD-Card under Windows. I tried more tools, but only one was able to work with SD-Cards. Here's what you need to do:
1. Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it, i cant post links)
2. Resize original FAT32 partition to make room for the ext3 one. If you have enough space, the data on the card shouldn't be affected, but make a back-up just in case.
3. Create the ext3 partition on the space made available and apply changes
The first partition should be FAT32, and the second ext3, make sure you have them in this order.

Almost all custom partition managers can do this in Windows-Partition Magic, Paragon, Or Gparted with VMWare
They can, but not on SD Card. Windows doesn't support partitions on memory cards. I tried Partition Magic, Paragon, Easeus, none of them work.
I didn't try Gparted with VMWare tho, you might be right about that.

Paragon works for me on Windows..And Gparted is what I use
Strange, it didn't work for me (see attached pics).
Just install the latest ClockworkMod, or Amon-RA and do it through recovery.
Is it useful to have an ext3 partition on SD card with stock 2.2 rom ?

It's useless, you need a ROM that supports it.
quick question - if I create an ext3 partition using this method or any other way, and then move the apps I had on SD (the old way) back to internal, will it then move them to the ext3 partition automatically? I just want to make sure I have this right myself before I attempt it.
I'm using Oxygen 2.3 ROM RC-6 which supports apps2sd etc.
thanks in advance for any replies.

See mine..
I'm using 9.0 Pro, you're using 10.0 server, if that helps..
I still prefer Gparted though..On Vmware.

The a2sd+ script is built in, it executes at installation. Best way would be to use Titanium to backup ur froyo a2sd apps, wipe+install a2sd+ custom rom, use the option of Titanium, to move to sd.
and how do you want to put data on the ext3 partition ? ... you will need linux, its the best way...

EDIT:
Didn't work, SD could not be mounted under Android or Clockworkmod
Did the partitioning under Clockworkmod
partition works, but..
i tried minitool and easueus, both partiotion my 16 gb sd card, but...
I use miui rom, xpart(data2ext). the script works, but the phone is slow as ........
someone any idea?
i also have a 8 gb card, same partitions, but no problem..
any idea how i can tets my 16 gb card?
Minitool is crap. Haven't used easeus but its still under Windows, which is a no no
Gparted is the only decent tool that will nicely partition an ext partition on your sd whilst aligning it properly. This is both my personal and professional opinion.
Now because it doesn't run in windows, its a bit more long winded but so much more worth while.
Virtual machine (vmware player) is the best method. There is a link to a guide to set this up in my signature
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Minitool partition wizard is a wonderful and practical software. Thanks!!
I downloaded the zip "DT-A2SD-AppData2SDMod" and installed via NANDROID.
But there is no widget or program. how do I access it now??
I use "spare parts" app as well and there is only the option of installation int/ext.

If it's like any other Data2SD app, there is no client app to set it up.
As long as you have the Ext2/3/4 partition on your SD card it should be using it.
I check mine via Quick System Info. If your Data2SD is working correctly the A2SD and Internal Storage details should be the same.
thanks Ralph,
I like to know your opinion on that:
I play with the idea of repartitioning my Fat32 SD card inside windows.
I like to use "ACRONIS Partition Manager" to subtract space from my FAT32 partition and create an ext3 partition behind it.
Now I am not shure if I have to create a primary or extended partition and if the position does matter (behind/before fat32)?
Any idea ?
Hi,
I also did it in Wondows, using another partiotion manager.
I believe that the Ext partition (I used Ext3) should be after the Fat32 partition.
If you are doing it from scratch, it might be worth doing it via gparted, to ensure that your partitions are Aligned to the SD Card.
You can download a bootable CD Image that you can partition the card with. I am going to do this when I get a chance.

thanks buddy,
would apreciate if you could find the CD image.
Just goto http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ and there are downloads for Live CDs, Bootable USB and other images.
Hi,
I have just bought a 32GB SD Card from Amazon. Komputerbay Class 10.
I have been running Sandvold's ICS ROM for the last month and all was fine, but I wanted a faster SD card.
I used Easeus Partition Manager using Windows XP and I created a 1GB ext2 partition after a FAT32 Partition.
However, I made it logical and wasn't able to change it to Primary, so I created another ext2 partition, this time Primary.
So, FAT32 partition of 28GB ish Primary, ext2 of 1GB Primary then ext3 of 1GB logical.
However, although my PC can see the FAT32 partition, my Desire cannot.
It can however see it in recovery which allowed me to flash the ROM etc.
Any ideas please?
Cheers
do NOT use any windows programs... try gparted live cd or 4ext recovery
and ONE more thing-both partition need to be PRIMARY

They are both primary, it's the extra one that is logical.
I may well try running Linux on my laptop alongside Windows to try that.
just boot it from cd or usb or virtual machine

I'll try that.
Do you know if I can use Damn Small Linux please?
Cheers
Hi,
I partitioned my SDcard with Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.1
Just make sure all partitions are PRIMARY and there is NO (free) space before or between partitions. If you made the FAT32 first as a logical partition and later switched it to primary, there might be a small free space before it.....
Just wipe the whol card and repartition it with first the FAT32 PRIMARY and then the EXT partition PRIMARY. This should work.
As they told use linux from cd.
It's easy e fast
Create fat32 primary first, then ext2,3,4 primary.
I'll do it a lot of time and always work
GPart Live worked a treat.
Easy too with You Tube to help.
The drivers on the laptop I was using rendered the screen almost unseeable, but I managed to get it done and it was clear as day at home.
To get your memory back as normal storage do the following steps in Windows7.
1 Press Windows-Run and type DiskPart in the ‘Open’ box.
2 This will bring up a DOS box with DiskPart running in it.
3 Type ‘list disk’ and look for the disk that resembles your SD card. (For this tutorial, we’ll assume it’s Disk 1)
4 Type ‘select disk 1′(Select SD card)
BE REALLY SURE YOU WANT TO WIPE THE CARD.
5 Type ‘clean’. This resets the disk.
6 Type ‘create partition primary’
7 Type ‘exit’ to quit.
8 Once you have done every thing format your SD-CARD using right-click inside My Computer
You will find the image in the attachment.
Thanks
another way is just download and run minitool
right click on 2nd partition and click delete
then extend your first partition into free space
then click apply
or delete both partitions and create one new single partition of fat32
much quicker and easier to use a GUI interface

I also used the minitool but it was not letting unpartition the whole sd card...It just unallocated the second partition and then it was not letting me to merge the unallocated memory to the unpartitioned memory. So i just used another method to unpartition the whole memory card It worked...
This is just another method to unpartition the memory card. This might help many guys to unpartition their sd card..This is also a easy way....!!!!
Thanks.
