Which root option is best? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's been a while since I've visited this forum. As an ex G1 owner and since September a DHD owner, I'm a little somewhat out of the game.
I successfully rooted my G1 basically just to get the phone to function and have not rooted the DHD as of yet, as its met my needs well ( upto now ).
I've searched and searched for info on rooting and am gutted to learn I can't use a one click method as the phone is nand locked.
I'm hoping to put his out to you guys, not for the easiest option, but as I'm very rusty with whole rooting thing, I'm hoping you can advise me on which you think is the safest, most stable and worthwhile.
Also, is there any difference in root options as per where you reside ( I.e. UK, US ) as to which downloads needed to root?
Thanks for any help guys

this is that you should to do for obtain superuser permission (root):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076
visionary Rxx its the most secure option to root your device,, it´s a "one click" tool and works with 1.32xxx versions of official firmwares..
if you have an upper version, browse "how to downgrade" in the bar of above
if you have android 2.3.3 via OTA, browse about "gingerbreak"
cheeerssss

Thanks man, so it doesn't matter which tool I use for a UK phone?
Downgrading shouldn't be a problem, its just obtaining the right files I guess. Thanks again

Correct. But if you have problems with one method try the other. For example, try the one click methods first but if you get stuck try the full command line style methods.

Ok, my personal preference would be to follow the long hand method as detailed on the cyanogenmod wiki. Reasons being that using visionary is unnecessary so why do it ,secondly if you do it long hand and it fails, unlikely as that is you'll know where and hopefully why, thirdly I like the geek factor off doing it the awkward way. This will work fine on a UK DHD as it's how miner was rooted.

Duplicate post, sorry

My phone is on a t mobile contract, but doesn't have any branding on the phone itself or the screen on boot up. Am I right in thinking I can bypass the goldcard part for rooting?

[Q] g2root.info

I've looked around quite a bit for simple rooting wizards, other than visionary, I a pair of videos showing a g2 rooting wizard available from g2root.info
Is this a legitimate wizard? It seems suspicious to me.
Its a scam , it promises to root your G2 for you after you fill out some surveys, it will not root your phone. This has been posted here before and removed by forum Mods.
Thanks man, I was pretty sure this was fake, I just wanted to reassure myself lol.
Looks like I'm gonna have to get adb & whatnot up & running on my comp =l
Wish this was as simple as jailbreaking, I felt tough when I hit my ipod touch when I was 12 lmao

You can try this no ADB needed, make sure to follow everything to the "T"

I have lookd into this method before, but I don't know if I'm ready for this. I purchased my phone in late December, so it has the newest updates & many users have commented poorly on this method. Do you believe the risk is worth it? And is this method that much easier than the rage method?
Thanks again.

If your comfortable with the rage method, then you might as well use the gfree method, by far the least amount of issues rooting, the method in the link above is how I oringinaly rooted my phone and so have many more, but if you were to get a census from the forum I think the majority of members would tell you to root using gfree. There is a way to run gfree using temp root with visionary, then use something like rootexplorer to place the needed files in data/local and use terminal emulator to run the commands. Search the threads it in here somewhere. But bottom line if your gonna mod your phone you might as well set up AndriodSDK and learn some basic ADB, never know when something might go wrong and you need it. Good Luck.

[Q] Got my Desire HD (with questions)

Well I finally bought a Desire HD and it's a great phone. I have done allot of things with it but it felt like I wanted more. Then I found this website and found out about rooting a phone. I hope to learn allot here.
My question: Can please someone give me all the sticky's or threads for learning everything I need to learn about rooting before I actually do it myself?
Thank you in advance.
Hi, welcome to XDA community.
It seems that you've come to the right place for rooting and flashing custom roms. All the basic information regarding rooting, downgrading can be found in the 1st sticky post in Desire HD Android Development section here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079108
Please do read them thoroughly and search for other threads for any questions or problems encountered involving rooting your phone.
Please do your best and good luck.

Can't I just use gingerbreak or doesn't it work on a desire HD?
It depends on what base you're on. The latest base that can be rooted gingerbreak is 2.36. Any higher base is not possible to root, for now.

I received a body protecter recently and it says to apply with liquid soap and water!?
.... I haven't got round to putting it on yet. Can you tell me if i should avoid this method. - did your device become water damaged this way?
Sent from my Desire HD
sure as hell it messed up mine one, that liquid got under the digitalizer and soaked my lcd, it did work but it looked like real liquid display(then i got pissed off and took mine apart and found it really hard to remove lcd from housing since it was glued all over the place and i got even more pissed of and went on it like a terminator, then spent 200 bucks in service shop so they would replace it badly(i have two small dirt dots under the screen)) lol search around and you'll find a few other guys with same problem, you can do it nicely even without water trust me **** off that liquid solution you don't want my story to happen
Thanks for the heads up! Appreciate it!

I think a lot of your information is outdated, for example Visionary is extremely outdated for most of the firmwares that's out now. The method outlined in the XDA Wiki as well as the Cyanogenmod Wiki is proven to work without fail (with the assumption that the end user actually follows the instructions to the letter).
The one click method tends to have problems and ends up in here for help, and far as hearing about it, normally hear complaints about their phone being bricked and how to fix it, they don't go into details exactly on "how" they bricked it, just that they whine and whine to unbrick it.
PS: I wish there was a way to remove an accidental thanks.
Well true there are some bad one click softs out there thats why i recommended what i have tried without problems........the fact that some are bad does not make dem all bad if only we bring up those that have bricked phones and those that helped cos not anybody has it easy with the XDA method by the way i recommend what i have tried so trust me what will i get by bricking someones phone (same module and and it worked)
PS:giving back your thanks.....

But of course with lack of information (ie: what phone did you have, what firmware was it at, was it originally Froyo, etc?), people attempting to do the same tends to cause problems.
Though in my opinion, if you can't handle the method outlined in the XDA wiki (which will work with any version of the phone, including instructions for making a gold card), then it's probably not the best idea to even attempt having a rooted phone.

[Q] Return to "locked" signature

Hi everyone,
I am new in the modding world of android and i am enjoying myself to try different ROMS on my HOX.
I think that me, like a lot of other people, have the problem of wifi signal: the HARDWARE problem.
Everybody of us know that the problem is joined to hardware because when we press between the camera and the volume up of our phone with ours fingers the signal goes up.
QUESTION:
Is there the method to make return our One x with the LOCKED signature in order to have no problem with htc warrently?
I would like to have a specifical guide, not a general guide if it is possible, because i read somewhere that there is an idea of the operation, or that someone have sent is phone in Russian for to relock with the LOCKED signature, but i've never found a good guide like for example the good guide of the installation of a rom.
If someone could help me I would be very grateful for it.
Thanks =)
Not possible without s-off even then not sure anyone knows what to change

There are services that offer you to soff if you send them your phone.
I wouldn't trust it, shipping your phone around the world just to soff honestly not worth the risk.
Even if you got it back to locked they still have Imei number when you unlocked.

Hi,
If you want to root and flash custom ROMS then you need to unlock bootloader and root
S-off is not needed to have ROMS and kernels and play around with apps needing root
you can use this site to follow instructions for Root

As an RD you really shouldn't be directing people to use toolkits but encouraging them to learn to use adb/fastboot so they can do it all manually
