If you mean from the completely off state (powered down) then no. These phones don't keep running. The only phones I know of that can do that are blackberries.
If that's not what you meant then please give more info.

Symbian phones also do that...but, i'm thinking that if the Desire HD at power-off is in an "ibernate status" maybe there could be a possibility...

The thread objects ask about power ON not off.... I think will be a good thing to make itself on..
Inviato dal mio Desire HD usando Tapatalk
I can remember where I saw the damn video, but someone turned the phone on and off simply by swiping the hand over the top of the display (where proximity sensor is.) I think it's just screen on and off and not the phone it self, since it is close to impossible to pull that off.
Auto power on: I think it is possible
Symbian phones can Auto POWER ON when you set an alarm and the alarm goes off. Currently, i see no such feature in android.
However, it is interesting to know that you can actually REBOOT/ RESTART your android phone using custom build roms. I have personally tried kyrillos 9.5 which has this feature.
It means that there is a batch of instructions which instruct the phone to reboot/ restart after it has switched off. I think these instructions should be closely looked at and exploited.
Another take on this is - may be the command only logs you out from the system and logs in without actually switching off the phone completely. but i think this should not be the case since android actually boots up after taking a lot of time to load on rebooting.
Whats your opinion guys?
I don't know. As far as I was aware, once the phone is off it's off.

As the battery is not removable - is there some other way of rebooting this phone properly if it hangs?
I have this on preorder and it would be nice to know before flashing custom roms. Some of the roms I have used before sometimes required battery removal to wake up from a heavy crash. Aka "black screen pf death".

It was actually mentioned by one of the HTC reps at MWC. I forget which tech blog it was, but the rep was showing off the phone and the guy from the blog asked specifically about that in the video.

There is a hard reset on the HTC One, pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds will force shut down the device. It basically simulates pulling the battery.

would you be so kind as to suggest to him to have this multicolor led notification on the hard home button for future release..?
I feel shifting the notification button to the home button at the bottom AND making it a multicolor LED type would be real awesome..!
I did do a search, I couldn't find anything directly related to my problem as it's not how to fix the phone, but how to recover my data in this specific situation.
Alright, so I went to Dublin, got absolutely smashed, and dropped my new One X in the toilet. It's working fine - turns on, buttons light up, goes to what seems like sleep mode and waking up when I use the volume buttons, all seems okay except my display is ****ed - black, sometimes with streaks of visibility but nowhere near enough to see what's going on. No touch either.
No-one will touch it and I don't care so much about the phone, I just want all the pictures I took from my drunken holidays. As HTC so intelligently decided on internal storage instead of SD cards I'm a bit at a loss here. I can connect my phone to the PC, but the default behaviour is 'charge'. With the update that came out a while ago it defaults to USB storage when plugged in (or so HTC customer service says) but I rooted it and ran CM10.
What I need is a way to force USB storage through the PC, or a way to do a full backup of the phone without having to turn storage on. I'm not sure if this is possible? I'd appreciate some help here!
(It's dry now, was about two months ago, also I don't need advice on how to get it fixed, I'm not interested in paying for this as I'm going to give it away for spare parts and buy a waterproof phone)
Thanks in advance guys!
How about usb-debugging, enabled or not?

Oop's that sounds bad but I'd be happy to help you to get your photos off. Firstly have you rooted yet? If so you could get it into recovery mode and with help from a friend or another phone then you could activate the usb mode. Also I'd be happy to take it off you for spares as I have two hox's in my house.

I've already promised it to a friend of mine - I am rooted, running CM10 but even if I get it into recovery I've no idea what I'm doing as the screen is completely black so it doesn't really help. Okay, here's a little guide:
Hold power and volume down for 25 seconds. Do not let go even if it vibrates.
1xvoldown
1xpower
Wait 20 seconds
Connect USB to PC.
5xvoldown
1xpower
8xvoldown
1xpower
The sdcard contents should pop up on pc. If not, reboot and do it all over again.

Have you checked if they are on your sim card? They might also be synced to your google account.
The only thing I know is that they are not on the sdcard. They are probably stored somewhere in /system/.
It could be possible to retrieve them through shell commands, provided that your phone has usb-debugging enabled.
Imma do some research and let you know if I find anything useful.
In the meantime, leave the handset to a bag/box of rice for the night. I have once recovered a dead display by doing that.

They aren't synced to google, only my old contacts, and they're not on my sim, that's the first thing I checked of course.
I did find com.android.contacts folder, but it's empty, or hidden system files. Thanks a lot. You are BRILLIANT.
Really.. I'll give it a shot, it's been a couple months though so I doubt there's any pee left in it.

Oh well. I'll try again tomorrow.

Hi guys!
I am missing a feature I used to have on my old Galaxy I9000: It is called "touchwake" and allows the screen to be switched on, if it gets touched.
Very handy feature and I think TWRP already has it (maybe it's a sensor thing, though). Has anybody an idea? Is this a kernel feature?

You don't have to reach for the power/home button when your screen times out (and this happens to me quite often if I'm reading something)

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the stock standard feature cater for that (SmartStay)?
Monitors your eyes and prevents the screen from switching off if you are looking at it.
Why dont you just download screen on toggler from the play store. That way, you can just quickly pull the menu down, press a button and your screen will never time out. Press it again and it switches back to your original time out setting.
Comes in handy when its too dark for smart stay to work.

There is a confusion on this function. This kind of feature allow you to turn on the screen without pressing any physical button. You can take the phone out from your pocket and swipe or touch the screen and the device will wake up.

Obvious solution: increase your time-out setting.
I have it at 2 min (hate the absurdly short time-out many people seem to use) and it never times out when I am reading.
Plus, as already mentioned, if for whatever reason that I can't imagine you want to keep a short time-out setting, you can always use SmartStay which works surprisingly well and can be very easily and quickly turned on and off with its toggle in the notification shade.
Guys, this isn't about SmartStay or the likes. I am already using it, also QuickGlance. TouchWake means turning ON the display by merely touching it (2 seconds for example). I was asking for this feature in the Perseus kernel thread, if you like the idea, just vote up my request.
PS: I also tried "proximity screen off" from playstore. It's nice but still not what I was looking for. A fast double tap for screen on would be nice for example.

I fell in love with this feature seeing it on a BB10 device (and that's just about the ONLY thing that I like about the BB10 BTW :laugh.
It would be awesome and would enable us to get rid of the physical home button (which wastes space and is a durability worry but it's still needed to wake the phone up as it's way more comfortable to use than the power button).
As I've seen on your comments you really don't know what it is.

I got my SM-P601 about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfectly since then, until last night. I left my note 10.1 with my father and left, when I got back, it was acting really weird. When I press the power button, you hear that sound that it woke up, but the screen doesn't power up until about 2 seconds later, it performs normally afterwards. Tried rebooting, no luck. It still gets weirder, so I leave it for an hour or so, when I try later, the screen no longer powers up (I don't know it's that or it has failed, crashed or something) but it is obviously powered up because when I press the power button, you hear that usual sound, and the same thing when you unlock it, I navigated through pages and even opened up some games, it's all working, except there's no screen, just plain black. The bigger problem is, I rooted it, so no warranty for me.

If you can get to recovery power+volume up , then wipe data & reboot .
I tend to agree, factory reset is worth trying.
Alright I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna need help navigating through the menu. After I power it off, I press the volume up and power and release the power button after about 5 seconds right? (I can't tell when the samsung logo shows up). The thing I wanna make sure of, the factory reset option, is it the third or fourth option? I am not sure if it is the same as my GS4. The confirmation afterwards is the eighth option. Can someone confirm that?

Just because your Knox flag has been tripped, does not automatically mean your warranty has been completely voided. Samsung is going to have to prove that your rooting the tablet is what caused the screen failure.
Were you running a custom ROM or kernel? If not, then there is no way I can think of that simply rooting the tablet caused the screen failure.
Now that's not to say your warranty isn't voided for another reason such as the tablet was dropped et al.
Just thinking outside the box... Did you happen to have Screen Filter or a like application installed at the time your screen went black? If so, someone may have adjusted the brightness setting to zero and that could be causing the problem.
Good luck.
I hope that's the case, can they even tell it is rooted without the screen being on?
To answer your questions, I haven't installed a custom ROM neither a screen filter app, I tried adjusting the brightness multiple times so one of the tries must have actually hit the correct place, still no effect though.
If nothing works, I think my only option is to take it back to samsung.

ya you should try samsung .at this point it wont hurt .just tell them screen went out and go from there. don't mention root .unless they ask.they will be able to tell anyway.this should be covered under warranty.good luck. let us know how it goes.
I had the exact same issue with this tablet.
The problem is that the backlight is dead.
If you look closely at the screen under the light, you'll be able to see some icons and letters.
In my case, Samsung did not cover the warranty because my device was not purchased in Canada and it was rooted.
I mean Canada didn't even have the device at the time.
Long story short, I did something bad to get my tablet "repaired".
But I blame Samsung for having such a crappy warranty service.

Just a wild guess but I suppose you could go buy a new one from a retailer here in Canada, swap out the faulty one for the new one and return it claiming it's faulty (I doubt any of them check the SN on the back and the one on the box match), or I guess you could even swap the SN on the box from the SN on the US box so it does match.
Not saying he did that, but it's the easiest way to get it "repaired"
Come to think of it you can do this for any tablet, even though this is downright fraud. So please don't.
