Did I mess up my SD card??!!Error Mounting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is what I have been getting in errors when I try to delete my dalvik-cache. Has anyone seen this.
can't mount dev block mmcblk0p2 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(no such device)
error mounting /sdext/!
skipping format.........

Anyone??.... I tried an alternate SD card but it still gave the same error. I am thinking I need to start from scratch and reroot my phone.

Marcus, I'm not sure if it is an SD card issue. It's possible, however, if you've tried a separate card like you've stated and still got the same error message, my first thought is to reflash your recovery. Afterwards, backup your SD card to your computer and then reformat it. Then do a clean wipe and then reflash your rom.

That is exactly what I am thinking. Start from scratch and get my phone working like its supposed to. Thanks for the inforrmation.

I would follow Doug's suggestion. Also, did this just start happening out of the blue? Or was it after making changes / alterations to your sd card (partitioned it maybe?). If there are no problems with a different sd card (if you have one to try), perhaps there is a problem with your card. You could try using windows to check the disk for errors, or perhaps try reformatting it or re partitioning it.

I did try one other card and I gave me the same error. This did also happen after I did a partition to my card. I am going to start from scratch and have everything prepared for viruses monster rom that is coming out today. I will update when I'm done. Thanks guys.

E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (File exists)

In Recovery (2.5.0.5) I get the error E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (File exists) Everything seems to work except nothing happens when I wipe battery stats. I have tried messing around with parted but it says it doesn't exist and doesn't let me create a new one. Does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?
I'm thinking it might have happened when i updated my recovery to 2.5.1.1 But I'm not sure. Thanks.

Check out my sig.
Thanks. I'm backing up my SD card now to try that. Does the new partition need to be that big? I don't move apps to my SD card and right now only have a 2 gig card.

Probably not. I have an 8 gig and like to plan for the future. Feel free to trim it, then let me know if it works and what size you used.
Thanks. That was quick and painless. I was able to make the SD ext partition 128mb. That's the smallest size it allowed.
I'm like you. Seeing any error really bugs me.

Just a further question on that... I have read PonsAsinorem's sig and I understand what is going on, but what I don't understand is how app2SD froyo style is working: it lets me "move" my apps to the SD card from within Froyo, although there is no such /sd-ext partition in my SD card. Does it mean that in fact it is not really moving the apps to the SD card? I am a little bit puzzled here...
Thanks,

I haven't toyed around with apps2sd extensively. I don't have that many and they read quicker off internal, if only slightly, so that is where I keep them. Also makes it easier to flash ROMs (I'm a firm believer in wiping all data and remnants of the previous ROM). I also didn't come onto the Android scene till rift before Froyo so I was a rookie. Which is what this MIGHT be, a fragment of 2.1, or even earlier, left behind for compatibility purposes. I don't have enough background to answer this with certainty.

The apps2sd implementation for our phone doesn't actually move it to our sd card, it moves it to emmc (internal storage) instead and doesn't require an ext partition.
Hi, I have Galaxy s and i had the same error message so I did as explained... but now my phone get stuck on defalt recovery screen and when I try to select "apply sdcard:update.zip" it says "E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) Installation aborted"...
what I understand is that the instructions for formatting the SD card wiped all the data including update.zip file.
Now my phone is no more usable, it get stuck on main default recovery(not clockwork) :-(
Please hepl me.. I know Its a another phone section but please help me if you can
Thank you in advance

make sd-ext to 3 partitions
First partition
for keep your data set file system to FAT32
Second partition
create new partition size beteen 32 - 40MB and file system is Linux Swap
Third parition
create new partition size around 517MB and file system is Linux Ext2
Done!!

I tried solving my problem just as described in the link above. I thought that it had been because I had partitioned my SD with too big a partition, 2 Gig. I resized my partition, exactly like described using AmonRa, without any problems except that the error still remained. I tried it again but this time with Clockwork. Again no success. I finally gave up and re-partitioned it with AmonRa and my original 2 Gig EXT partition. Finally success! I dont know if attempting with different recoveries did something but it worked and it worked with a 2 Gig EXT partition. Hope this helps someone else.

[Q] Did I just FUBAR my Desire? [Fixed]

Hi.
Desire suddenly doesn't want to read any kind of sdcards anymore. Powering on brings me to FASTBOOT. CWM just says that it can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1. Also, SD-EXT was supposed to be there, it fails to find that one as well. Also Win7 suddenly says it can't find driver for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM? WTH is that?
It did OK not ten minutes ago before it happened. PC reads any kind of sdcards fine.
Ok, my bad. I've been swapping sdcards. I've been pulling battery out, because sometimes it had hanged.
In short, did I somehow FUBAR it? Or is there something I can yet try?
have u try to go into recovery an do a fully wipe an the install the rom again
Yes. It wipes DATA, CACHE and then complains that "No app2sd partition found" (I can live with that) and Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
I've done partitioning with GParted. Also, that sdcard is stock 4 GB that came with the device.
Also, for info, I'm running S-OFF and CWM 2.5.1.8
Search for usb brick.

Try to remove the SD Card from phone, insert it again, power up and go to the recovery/mounts&storage, try to unmount and then mount SD Card.
See if that helps, i had similiar issue and it helped me. (Also be sure FAT32 is first partition followed by ext3/4 and ofcourse both primary!)

Ok, thx for fast responses. Will try this now.

Getting "Error mounting /sdcard" when formatting.

Hi guys.
I'm having a bit of trouble restoring my ROM after testing the ICS. What happened was I flashed the ICS ROM, played around with it, then decided to go back to my original ROM (CM7) which I had made a nandroid backup of through recovery.
I did a full wipe through recovery (CWM 5.0.2.0), but when I came to format the sdcard, it said error mounting /sdcard, skipping format. At first I though it was the sdcard, so I got a new one, formatted it on my pc and retried. It failed again. I can't mount the sdcard to my pc too.
I tried partitioning using amonRA recovery too, it didn't work either. I don't think it's an sdcard issue, so I'm not sure what's going on. I can't flash any ROM now, the only thing working is booting to CM7 in safe mode, but I don't know what use that would be.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Please let me know if I can give any more information to help you out.
Thanks.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums
Sorry to see you are having trouble, let me help you out:
Why are you formatting your SD card in the fist place?? If your phone doesn't recognize the SD card there is little you can do. Seeing as it doesn't read the new SD card either is no surprise as the files for the Recovery are on the SD card..
Do you have an SD-Card reader? Try connecting it to your PC/Mac/Whatever using that and see what happens. It could be your phone, and not your SD-Card after all
USUALLY a nandroid backup does not require wiping for restoration. And wiping doesn't mean you wipe your SD card.
Good Luck,
AU
I connected the sdcard to my pc and I accessed it without any issues. I found .dm files in it though, some sort of debug logs.
Hmm, sounds weird.
Have you tried formatting it on your computer and then formatting it on your phone? Can't see why it should help, just troubleshooting here.
Perhaps your card is dead
Why are you formatting your SD-Card in the first place, if you're only doing a nandroid restore?
Try different recovery, CWM can get picky. Or you can try formatting card within Android. Use SDFormatter in Windows.
I followed these steps and it worked. Now I can access the SD Card.
Thanks anyway for your help guys. I appreciate your support.

[Q] Problems flashing roms with CWM/TWRP

Hello, I've been trying to flash a rom and keep getting this error on TWRP:
Updating partition details...
E: Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/update.zip'
Updating partition details...
Failed
I tried downloading a different ROM (ParanoidAndroid, then ParanoidKANGdroid, then CM10), installing from the external SD card instead of the internal one, switching from CWM to TWRP since some people have been complaining about CWM recently, and I just keep getting the same error.
Also, when I try to install the zip file from my computer instead of my phone, it won't let me put the file in any of the SD card's folders, so I'm not sure if that's normal/relevant to the problem. Would installing a custom kernel or trying to partition the SD card help? I don't have an SD card reader unfortunately but I'm pretty sure it's in fat32 format.
Thank you very much!
Whenever I get "bad" (followed by an Android robot on his back with a red shape on his front) while installing it usually just means a bad download.
Re-download to another folder (if you can download FROM your phone directly to your phone) I find that works really well.
Alright, I'll try downloading again, thanks. I have saved it in both the downloads and the ROM folder I created myself with no difference though.
I tried downloading CM10 directly from my phone to my downloads folder and still got the same error.
I had problems flashing a particular rom. Same as your having, I use TWRP. If you read in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034844 others have same experience. There are some solutions and something about editing a script.
Sorry I can't be more helpful but this was a bit more than I could take.
Thanks! I'll be sure to read through it. No amount of help is too small at this point lol.
If your sd card is 64gig you have to use win util to format it to fat32. Google format 64 gig sd fat.

You can take out the variable of the MicroSD card and flash from the internal SDcard.
I've tried both; thanks though.
What version of TWRP/CWM are you using?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
TWRP 2.3.1.0 and CWM 6.0.1.2
Sounds like you are having filesystem corruption issues. I would suggest formatting your internal and/or external sdcards.

I just ordered an sd card reader so I'll check it out, thanks. I don't think I've done anything to corrupt the filesystem though. Do you think it was already corrupted when I bought it?
Stuff happens. Filesystem corruption can be cause by almost anything. Typically it happens when your device random reboots.

This may be off base here, but are you selecting the option in your recovery to "flash update.zip" rather than manually browsing for the ROM Zip?
I've tried choosing the "flash rom" option from the Goo Manager app as well as the "install" option from the recovery menu.
Same Prob, escalated...
I was having the same problem. After some research I found a tip to Delete a portion of coding in the begining of the update-script zip file. Only now it is unable to open and read the zip file. I too was doing from computer via external sd card. Have you gotten any where since?

Clockworkmod recovery cant partition very well so that could be ur problem like abaaaabbbb63 says, change ur recovery to 4ext recovery and then partition ur sdcard with abaaaabbbb63 guide.
