[Q]How to change SMS encoding? - Defy General

Hi there, I got a Hong Kong version of Defy and using it at New Zealand at the moment. I found that I can't text any Chinese to my friend at another mobile network, all they got are just blank texts with no any text in it (It displays fine if I text to the same network). Then I tried my Hong Kong version of Milestone, it also having this problem. I talked to one of the support of my mobile operator, he monitored my texts and told me these:
For Milestone (Official Android 2.2, with the stock messaging application):
The handset is sending Data Coding Scheme 11, which is 00001011 in binary.
According to 3GPP TS23.038, when bits 7-4 are 0000 it means the message is uncompressed, and bits 1-0 are reserved. Bits 3-2 indicate the alphabet, = 10 means UCS-16 encoding used for Chinese.
Typically bits 1-0 should be 00 in this case (DCS=8). Specifically, the standard says "any reserved codings shall be assumed to be the GSM 7 bit default alphabet" so I think this might be the issue - since DCS 11 is a reserved coding, strictly speaking it shouldn't work.

For Defy (Official Android 2.1-update1, with the stock messaging application):
Those messages were all DCS 27. 27 means 16 bit characters with message class "TE specific". Weird.

He applied a re-write rule for DCS 11 texts and change them to DCS 8, which solve my problem texting in Milestone. But he can't do anything for Defy because:
The DCS 11 is meaningless so changing it to 8 is fairly harmless. But DCS 27 actually means something, so I would break other things using it legitimately if I rewrote it too.

I also contacted Motorola support and they say Defy only sends out DSC 27 and future updates MAYBE will solve this problem, and they say there is nothing I can do at the moment.
Can someone please tell me how can I make Defy sends out DSC 11 or DSC 8 like other android devices? I've tried 3rd party SMS application like Hancent but it doesn't work.
Thank you.

Anyone can help please?

What's Wrong with my S/N? Can't d/l WM6

Can anyone help me please? I live in the US and bought my Orbit directly from a Hong Kong dealer through Ebay. Now I want to upgrade to WM6 but the website keeps telling me that the S/N is wrong. My S/N is not in white as it says - it is on a white label and the text is in black. The S/N is S/N:HTXXXAAXXXXX with a B after a few spaces where the XX are numbers and the AA are letters. No matter how I try to enter the number (with the S/N, without the S/N, with the :, without the :, with the B, without the B) it tell sme that my number is invalid. Is the problem that my phone came from Hong Kong and the number doesn't match the UK version? Will Tom's B&B version work for me in the US? Please help.
Dont bother - Ive got a better idea for you...
Dude,
dont bother with the "official" WM6... look in here for the PDAVIET 4.0 update. its the same as WM6, but our friend Tom has added some apps, and tidied it up so much that its a wonder O2 havent snapped him up as a designer. the downloads are far more available, and you wont regret upgrading.
Good luck, and Rock on.
I agree with him
Why bother with O2 when there is our Tom.He shud be the design manager of HTC

tough choice when there isn't a windows pc in sight and you only have FF, seamonkey or konquerer coz opera is broken. i'll try with konq but if not looks like i'll be hitting one of the mirrors.
fyi, i'm an it tech with a passion for hating MS. only got the phone coz the budget was tight and vodafone like to sell their treo with wm5 at an extrotionate price.
every one seems to be a techy these days yet i still manage to beat o2 (after a 15 minute fone call to there xda tech guys who's response was the download is not available) that was using firefox
gave IE7 a go thought why not and it accepted my S/N and downloaded
use the 02wm6 rom supplied then

well it doesn't work in konq, FF or it's big bro seamonkey. i did manage to fix opera and scored. dunno if i'll install it tho coz the app i need to use to sync the device on linux doesn't really work with wm6 afaik
i done mine in boot loader mode
just plugged in device and openned rom
2mins later job done
no WMDC installed
(ive had it a week my 1st PDA if you a IT dude you should manage more than i can )
your right i can but knowing how to code a program to be compatible with the changes in wm6 is different to knowing how to repair a system (which is what i do). So in the sync program department i have to rely on other people in the linux community and i'm really not sure if i could get a good sync out of it with the pda running wm6
Just FYI I had this problem (but now got BB4) I managed to download the official O2 WM6 use internet explorer, no capital letters and include the letter at the end.
Hope this helps

well i just put in the first 14 characters including the "HT" part. all lowercase and as i said i used opera. i have been told that wm6 works with "synCE" (the linux sync tool i have to use) as long as you don't password protect anything. so i may install it when i get time.

No, I honestly don't, and didn't find it in a quick search just now.
Honestly, if you're needing to retain that volume of SMS messages, I would suggest using something like microsoft's free myphone which backs up your messages to the cloud and stores them for you there in bulk, for you to restore to your phone any view there anytime you want, or even view/manage them through a website from any pc. I do this, and only retain whatever sms threads I currently have active and recent, and all the rest I just store there for any future need to refer back to them. The SMS module in WM tends to get less stable the more messages you pack in there, so this is just a good way to keep the phone as lean and efficient as possible
EDIT: please note that myphone does NOT backup MMS, just SMS (and certain other folders as well)
hi
thanks, but its not SMS messages im refferring to but call log (phone calls)

Yes, you're right, and that's what I was originally suggesting that tool for, I got confused with another item I was searching for at the same time, sorry
That tool actually gives the following options for retaining the call log:
5000
10000
20000
30000
40000
50000
Maximum
hope that's enough for you lol
it is enough, but it doesnt work, reality is 300 entries even if i change to a larger number, tool dont change it

My UK t-mobile one does not have arabic under locales (but it only has 6 choices)
I've bought mine 2 days ago. Looking at the locale i only have Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. So bear in mind that the phone may have different language and locations depending on where you bought it from. Clearly mine is an Eastern European version.
P.S: Amazing phone. I'm in love!

Got it from your local dealer? Does it have Baltic languages aswell? Not that i care, my phones are always on english.
I see they have added us(Baltics) in locale. On Hero sold here there were only the first five. I was hoping we get the Nordic one, but yeh... Eastern europe makes sense. But why not other countries then?
I really dislike the segmented markets and versions in technological devices...

desire test
i would like to test on Desire this:
Outlook contacts + calendar
-sync with Desire over the microUSB cable. does the Outlook Calendar + Condatcs sync without data being transferred to Google Gmail/Google Calendar and so on ?
- does the Sync happen automatically (like ActiveSync with Windows Mobile devices) on background in Windows XP/7 ... or do you have to start anything manually after you plug in the device ?
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- could you open www.youtube.com on the integrated google web browser and try to play videos in 360, 480, 720p ?
SD card:
- is the Desire shipped with SD card, or without ?
LCD Screen:
- does it glare a lot on sunlight ?
- is there any screen protector shipped with Desire ?
------
sorry it's not ROM cooking related, but i would be interested anyway, if you find the time to test and answer

Outlook contacts + calendar
-I know that the syncing is possible and you can set it to automatic, but not if its pushed through to G-Apps, i think not though
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- When you go to the regular youtube website, and the flashplayer is loaded, you see a big play button (no bar on the bottom). When you hit it, the youtube app pops up and plays your video. Good news though: theres an option for high quality video in there, which imo gives perfect quality (and i have high standards)
SD card:
- Mine came with a class 2 4GB microsd, already in the phone (so htc put it there, all desire's should have one)
LCD Screen:
- I did notice in the bus today that its very reflective, but if you up the brightness to 100%, theres no problem at all.
- No, but you can buy them off ebay, theres a supplier in the UK that has an unending supply of 6packs for about 2 euro
* Note: it's not an LCD screen, but an amoled one
Also for anybody who's interested:
Due to the nature of the screen and the fact htc & google ignore websafe colors, some shades of grey look a little pinkish. Its not at all anoying or ugly, and its barely noticable. Still, its there.
Hope this helped you,
Nick

I went from the Diamond to the Magic (second android phone) and never looked back. Seriously, once you've tried android, you will wonder how you could ever live with WM.
Try borrowing a device from a friend or ask for a demo in a store?

Clovek1 I had a diamond too and yesterday I got the Desire...Man let me tell you, it's a huge step forward.
The only thing bellow "great" is the camera but I don't really care. The interface is fantastic and the speed of the thing is really amazing.
I have the same problem with the locales, as it displays only 6(the greek language isn't there), but I got MoreLocale 2.
Also I can't see the paid apps as they're not supported in Greece atm.
i am using Outlook Calendar synchronization in my office quite often (daily). The Google Calendar is blocked in my company, for security reasons.
Therefore i would like to be sure, that the synchronization really works.
btw. how do you transfer your contacts from Windows Mobile to Android ? Through Outlook ?

It depends on the version of Exchange being used by your company.
Exchange 2007 is syncing calendar just fine but Exchange 2010 has a problem in that it initially syncs but then generates an error that causes all mail/contact sync to fail (stop syncing calendar and mail/contacts sync fine again). I can't vouch for Exchange 2003 as I don't know anybody using it with Android.
Having just moved from WinMo to Android the contacts migration is seamless - you're talking to an Exchange Server, give it the right credentials and all your contacts and mail will flow sweetly. My old Kaiser hasn't been plugged in to a PC to Sync ever - and neither will the Desire. Why, when it can all be done over the air via Exchange.
Now if only Tasks would be supported as standard without having to buy something extra.
Rgds
Aaron
Yes there appears to be a problem with Exchange 2010. When the Desire arrived here, I was still connecting successfully to Exchange 2003. Since then we have upgraded to Exchange 2010, and Calendar sync now fails. As you say, it fails badly enough to stall mail and contacts sync too.
By disabling Calendar sync on the phone, mail and contacts then sync nicely. Enable Calendar sync, and if your Exchange is 2010, it al goes wrong.
I note you are syncing fine to Exchange 2007, so this must be a weakness with Exchange 2010, but it is hard to blame the Exchange server, as my iPods/iPhones sync just fine with Exchange 2010.
So in summary, there appears to be a show-stopper sync error on HTC Sense Exchange 2010 support which thwarts Calendar sync. Here's hoping there is a fix for this shortly, as the Desire becomes a no-go for corporates until this is sorted.

Hello! Device Contacts problems and Minor helps

hello to everyone here in xda
I just got my sprint tp2 three weeks ago because i needed a winmo cellphone to install chinese dictionary/1,500mah battery/hardware keyboard/ and something different than samsung, (last phone was samsung innov8)
I've modded my phone little by little by lurking, but there's some annoying issues that i've been trying to solve by searching the internet and xda forums but couldn't find it, like:
(using today's screen)
-making the contacts remember the setting "filter by Device Contacts",
it always display "all contacts" <--- Big headache...
-that same contact's menu uses big fonts, i've changed the fonts to small text, but still couldn't make it smaller (attached file)
-adding and removing things on windows today screen(attached file)
-any good converter to change money, mass, temperature....
I've changed rom, but the same problem were still on the original sprint 6.5 rom, software information are:
OS version: 5.2.21889 (21889.5.0.87)
Manilla: 2.5.2010121225.0
ROM : Mr.X ROM 2.5
Rom date 04/10/10
Radio version 2.32.00WF
thanks !

I can't really help with the other issues, but I can easily recommend uConvert as the best measurement converter available for the TP2. There's a basic version available for free (cab is attached below), but for $.99 you can purchase the full version which just unlocks some more types of measurements and units.
More details: http://uconvert.us/
thanks.. ! i wonder if... nobody have this problem on their sprint tp2 or they just use sim contacts???

thanks !, now the other minor today screen customization to be happy with the phone !

Caller ID (7 digit) FINALLY FIXED

Hi All,
Quite a newbie and just rooted the Desire a couple of days ago, so bear with me…
Not sure if this is still a problem for many of us out there, but it’s been a problem for me for years, and I never found a solution to it (on the web or elsewhere), so I thought of sharing it.
For those of us who need “7 digit” (not 8 digits) Caller ID Matching, for both Phone and SMS/MMS, I think I have it working now
The problem comes from how your operator provides the caller id; in my country it’s +CCC x yyyyyy for SMS, and 0x yyyyyy for phone calls; CCC being the country code, in my case 961, but I’ve seen posts from other countries as well.
For Windows Mobile it was just modifying the registry, but for Android, I’ve seen many posts, blogs, etc. about libsqlite.so needing to be changed. I believe I found (actually stumbled across) a much simpler and more “correct” solution:
In the file “/system/build.prop” just add a line at the beginning “ro.phone.min_match=7”. Then use the normal recovery flash method and you should be good to go.
Update (thanks to luckyjay):
Or you can use Root Explorer, long press the file and open with text editor and just do it that way Reboot to apply changes
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
(I used ES File Explorer instead)
I’ve tried it with several ROMs, including RCMixS and AceSMOD007, and it worked for me. (And WOW those are some really excellent ROMs)
Hope this helps, and let me know if I need to elaborate some more. (It's my first post after all)
!! MANY THANKS TO XDA, THE TUTORS, THE MODDERS AND EVERYBODY MAKING OUR PHONES BETTER THAN THEY ARE !!
Not relevant for my country. But looks like a good catch. Well done!
Thanks jan, nice to see a reply
And I totally agree with you, but the "GENIUSES" over here decided on (and look at that):
+961 a 123456 or 0a 123456 (landlines)
+961 3 123456 or 03 123456 (original GSM lines)
+961 70 123456 or 70 123456 (newer GSM lines)
+961 71 123456 or 71 123456 (newer GSM lines)
… I mean people can’t get this straight how about phones (granted, some phones might be more “aware” than some people, but who am I to say)
The problem has been around for a long time (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606728 just one post of the MANY I’ve looked at), and we never got an answer.
I even emailed HTC for months on end about this, and never got a half-way decent reply! And I have been a loyal HTC customer for a long time: HTC P3300 (the first HTC, I think), Touch Diamond, TyTN, TyTN 2, Desire, HD2, Sensation
So I was really expecting a bit more from them, especially if the answer is as easy as I mentioned;
they’re statements “your s/n is for an HTC Hero” (hello! I'm sorry, the phone looks like the Desire, has the right software,firmware, th box says Desire, the phone says Desire etc.etc.)
or
“to edit the registry as it is considered illegal” (again hello! there is no registry in Android)
All this wasn’t really productive. One support tech (after being bounced back and forth) was actually trying to help, but eventually I just gave up.
After getting the HTC Sensation, I started rooting the Desire, and guess what, it just took the “ro.phone.min_match=7” to fix it. This could have been done even without rooting.
AND GUESS WHERE I GOT THE “ro.phone.min_match=7” FROM?? ... the HTC Sensation !!!!!

finally a solution... i am using prefixer to fix the prob but not very convenient! thx for the solution!
Thank you guys! for your comments & support !!
This thing has been driving me crazy for years, and Prefixer (nice BTW) or duplicating all phone numbers twice is just, is just INSANE for a "smartphone"
Yep, in Lebanon we have this problem, but I've seen many posts including Italy, Spain, and more countries, all of which have the same issue.
Anyway, glad I was able to contribute something, and appreciate your feedback.

It's usually not there ;most contries don't need it. Just add the line using ES File Explorer or similar to the build.prop (somewhere towards the beginning) "ro.phone.min_match=7" then save and reboot.
Should work then... let me know. (worked for me a lot on several MODS)
Great find.. I used to have that problem with my HTC Desire. But switching to CM7+ Handcent SMS was a solution to me in the past. But i think this is better

ok will try it this evening thx
SMS was not really the big problem (for me), rather the Dialer: when you're in your home country the numbers arrive in local format (0a xxxxxx) but when you're roaming the phone calls arrive in international format (+CCC a xxxxxx). That's why I had to duplicate everything. And this for both incoming and outgoing calls.

can confirm it works, just flashed Reflex_S_2.1.7
original build.prob:
Code:
ro.ril.oem.ecclist=911,112,999,110,191,113,117,15,1122,115,16,118
ro.ril.ecc.HTC-WWE=999
ro.ril.ecc.HTC-ELL=92,93,94
ro.ril.enable.a52.HTC-ITA=1
ro.ril.enable.a53.HTC-ITA=1
ro.ril.enable.a52=0
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.enable.sdr=0
........
this doesnt recognize Caller ID (7 digit)
changed build.prob using ES File Explorer (don't forget to activate root permission in ES File Explorer settings):
Code:
ro.phone.min_match=7
ro.ril.oem.ecclist=911,112,999,110,191,113,117,15,1122,115,16,118
ro.ril.ecc.HTC-WWE=999
ro.ril.ecc.HTC-ELL=92,93,94
ro.ril.enable.a52.HTC-ITA=1
ro.ril.enable.a53.HTC-ITA=1
ro.ril.enable.a52=0
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.enable.sdr=0
........
save & reboot.... now working Caller ID
