google search box behaving like password field - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
From yesterday I am finding the Google search behaving strangely. Any text entered are displaying it as food (like password). I am not sure what's the problem is.
I got this problem with rcmix 0.9, leedroid 3.0.5 , insert coin 15, then I came back to leedroid 2.4 which I was using and was having as a backup, but no change still same problem. I have checked this with default browser and with dolphin and with opera on all Roms specified above , still same problem.
Has any one have same problem?
Is it a virus?
Is something went wrong in updating roms?
Not sure why?
I request for the help from experts.
Thanks in advance.
Prakash Rao

My guess would be that Google made some changes to their mobile site, and accidently made the search box appear as a password entry box. Probably nothing you can do, it would have to be fixed on Google's end.
Also other people reported this with Stock NON-rooted phones and other devices, like Wildfire, Thunderbolt.

I agree with that, although it's odd some people have it and some not!

[Q] Browser weird behaviour

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone else had this problem occur or knows what is causing it, browser was fine yesterday, but this morning when starting to type in the search box on google mobile search page the characters appear, then after about a second they get hidden with a dot, like I am entering a password or something like in the attached screenshot, and it's really starting to annoy me.
It's ok if I switch to one of the other available searches like image or places search, only happening on the web search page.
I've tried switching to a different keyboard, clearing all histories/caches etc, and it's still doing it, any ideas anyone ?
same problem here..it appeared after i flashed a new ROM (RCMix S v09)..not a big problem though, since theres a search button on the desire...but still wondering what causes this bug
use opera it is way better than embedded browser
Thanks Salahfathi, not after another browser though, don't use it enough to warrant installing another one, I find the original one perfect for my use, would just like to get rid of the little annoyance in the first post.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk Pro ...
Know bug, reported by other users, as well.
Follow the threads, they are working on a fix.
OK - the odd thing about this is that my wife started experiencing this on her unrooted, stock froyo wildfire yesterday. One minute normal, next minute like a password. My desire is not showing this behaviour.
Now that suggests to me something is happening that is not rom dependent?!!!

[Q] Unable to download from Market using 3G?

Update with fix [Thanks jayclapp!]
For anyone with this issue, go into your APN settings and remove anything in the "Proxy" field, right below "APN". Fixed the problem immediately for me + jayclapp!
Original Post Below

Hi all,
Having an issue downloading anything from the android market on 3G. 3G works for everything else besides downloading from the market (browsing, email, sync, etc).
When I switch to wifi, I can download from the market perfectly fine.
I've tried a friends SIM with a different carrier, and it DOES work over 3G.
Logcat of the issue happening From what I can tell the error starts around line 50, but I included the full log in case it helps.
I'm not much of a developer so I'm just trying to determine why exactly it's happening, as Android simply spits out a pop-up with the useless message:
[App name here] could not be downloaded due to an error.
I have a friend on the same carrier with a Nexus S and she can download apps from the market fine. Haven't been able to test her SIM in my phone yet though.
I've found some others with a similar issue (although not restricted to only happening over 3G): http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=5a31588b6f655e89&hl=en
None of the solutions there helped though. I've cleared market data, wiped, factory reset, tried different roms, etc.
I'd really appreciate any help.
i'm having the same problem - using a galaxy nexus on tmobile. haven't had the change to try on wifi yet.

Glad I'm not the only one...
By searching pastebin, I've found a few others that pasted their logcats with the same issue, but I can't find wherever they posted it to see if a solution ever happened.
One solution I found was to delete / rename the .android_secure folder on the "SD" card, but I see that folder on my phone. I know dotfiles are hidden by default but I'm showing hidden files and I don't even see .android_secure from adb shell.
I'm on Mobilicity in Canada, which also uses AWS bands, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I don't like bumping, but I still have this issue and was hoping someone could help out.
Sucks only being able to download apps over wifi.
I saw Josh Topolsky from The Verge has been complaining about this issue on twitter the last couple days.
www.twitter.com/joshuatopolsky
I've tried everything to fix it, tried different roms, kernels, wiping, factory reset, different SIM cards, nothing will fix it.
The 403 error indicates that it's Google's servers that are forbidding the connection...but I see no reason why they would, and it's not like I can change the IP address of what my phone is being assigned by the 3G towers.
Everthing was fine on stock untill i flashed revolution hd 1.3.1... I had the same problem with market but for some reason i enabled wifi and started downloading stuff from the market...then i turned it off and magic it worked thru att 3g...
I hope this temp solution might help you guys out or maybe it just worked for me
Ditto
I'm facing the same issue with a Galaxy Nexus (bought from Virgin) on Mobilicity in Toronto: market works on wifi, but not on 3g.
I'm having this problem too. With Orange in Spain.
But is not a constant problem. Sometimes works fine, and another ones not. When the error comes out I try again several times untill it works. If doesn't I whait to have Wifi.
But as I said it isn't always. But some type of bug is.
I got the Galaxy Nexus yesterday from Virgin Mobile and using it with my Telus SIM and Android Market downloads dont work using the mobile network but switch to wifi I can download from Market. I've tried everything you mentioned as well and still no luck.
I have noticed some delays in downloading but I am pretty sure it is becasue of the "little" 10 Billion Apps promotion thats causing the issues.. the market must be seeing a lot more traffic than it can cope with.. servers must be over loaded!
Try market at off peak times (worked for me)!
This theory syncs quite well with the 10 Billion Apps promotion.. just a thought!

Unfortunately that isn't the reason. It's definitely something more serious / buggy than simply too much traffic. It's been going on for almost 2 weeks now, well before that promotion even started.
Anyone feel like pulling a logcat and seeing if it matches up with mine? I'd suspect it does (403 Forbidden errors).
It basically boils down to Google's servers rejecting the connection for one reason or another. 403 error = The server is connectable, but knowingly refused the connection. It's something on Google's end, but I don't understand why certain devices are being rejected while others aren't.
Went to apn settings and removed the proxy and now i can download from market over celluar
Just wanted to confirm your fix worked for me jayclapp!
Updating the OP with the fix, in case anyone stumbles across the same issue.
Bumping up the thread but i believe it's for a good reason.
I had the same problem with I9100 after upgrading to ICS from GB. Talked to Google play support, their solutions weren't helpful (erasing cache and stuff) and they said it's a carrier problem. I used another SIM from the same carrier and it still wasn't working....
So.... Stumbled on this thread, erased the proxy and now it's working!!!
So, i'm bumping this thread so it will perhaps show up in google in a higher search position and to say thanks to the OP (besides the thanks button)

[Q] I relocked and RUU'd - now search is faulty and Google Now disappeared

Hi all, I've been playing around with custom ROMs on my One X for about a year and a half but was recently getting tired of putting up with stability issues and decided I wanted to return the phone to stock.
I relocked the phone with ADB, then ran the appropriate RUU for my CID.
The procedure worked fine and I managed to download the latest HTC stock update without any drama, except for one annoying issue.
The search function stalls every time I use the toolbar - the whole screen goes blank white except for the little 'working' logo, occasionally it connects to Google and responds to my search terms. Also I cannot find any trace of Google Now in the software, it has vanished from the phone. No cards appear on the search page and there is no reference to it in any settings menus.
What do you think the root cause could be? What are my options for fixing it?
Thanks

it is now called google search
Thanks for the reply but whatever it's called it isn't working properly.
I'm getting error messages saying "server access failure" and there are zero cards or location-based info being presented. I cannot find any reference to cards within the settings either. Would a factory reset work? Or is there someway of resetting or re-installing the search apk?

I don't use it actually but I've just tried it for you and seems to be working fine, loading up up relevant weather and location information.
Yes you could try a factory reset or try uninstalling it from the play store, but don't forget you are looking for google search, and not google now.
Press thanks if I helped you. Sent via XDA Premium 4
Thanks man, clearing the data out of the Google Search app seemed to reset it. Everything working fine now..

Very weird bug on my phone

Hi everyone,
I'm new here, nice to meet you all. Last night I finally bought the LG G3, switched from an iPhone 5S.
Right away I flashed the phone to Lollipop that I found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/kdz-poland-lollipop-lg-g3-20a00-t2938255
And the phone really works flawlessly except for one weird (and pretty annoying) bug.
When I'm surfing using Chrome or the generic browser that comes with the phone, after visiting a few websites (music forums, basketball websites, etc., nothing out of the ordinary that I usually visit), for some reason the browser gets redirected to an app called "Porn Factory" and wants me to download it to my phone.
Now, I'm pretty sure this isn't normal behaviour. And I've read that people have experienced a similar issue with their phones, but I still haven't found a solution to stop this from happening.
I tried a fresh install of Chrome, deleted all data/cache and it still happens from time to time. My phone isn't loaded with a lot of apps, just a few social media apps basically as it's brand new. Also tried scanning it with a few of the anti-virus apps on Google Play and nothing.
So yeah, if anybody could give a tip or two on how to solve this I would be very greatful. This is my last resort. :-\
Other than this, I'm really enjoying the G3!
p.s. I do apologize if the thread isn't in the right section, I'm new here.
Try to do factory reset (wipe data)
Next time use G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum as it belongs to this section.
sounds like it is trying to tell you something
but seriously it doesn't sound like anyone else has that issue (or they think it's a good thing, who knows)
could it be an SD card issue?
Can you boot into safe mode by pressing+holding the reboot button?
So the only thing I can do is a complete factory reset? How certain are you guys this could work? I mean I could do it, but I just want to try everything else before wiping everything and starting again from scratch.
Really appreciate the help guys!
Are you signed into chrome?

Yeah, I logged in with my google account the first time I launched it. I could clear all settings and re-install the app and not sign in when I launch it for the first time. If that's a viable solution?
The thing is this is also happening on the stock browser which came with the phone and I'm not signed into anything on there.
* Try other browsers.
*Try some free antivirus solution.
* Is this happening on the same connection (WiFI / Data)? Maybe it's something in the network / dns proxy, etc.
* Check your internet settings (ip, dns, etc.)
What you have there is either mallware or some other type of bad "virus". This can't be considered a but by a long shot.

Same thing is happening on my home Wifi, my friend's house wifi and my cellular data. On Chrome and the stock browser.
Well I've done a factory reset a few moments ago, will see if anything changes.
My best guess is either some bad configuration (with a mallware dns or whatever) or some mallware that does that intercepting / redirect. Bugs are crashes, things not working etc not porn redirection , that's what mallware does.

I get what you're saying, but how is it possible the phone got infected out of the box? I basically used it for a couple of hours before this started happening. Didn't surf any "bad" websites and installed only a couple of social apps.
there are lots of "ways" these get pushed and lots of crappy ads that you press and install things or reconfigure things that you wouldn't know. I don't know, I would start analyzing the apps looking at what's going on ...
don't want to be the devil's advocate but maybe one of your friends played a practical joke on you ... don't know these things tend to happen ...

Nobody has touched the phone except me since I got it.... and just finished the factory reset thing and set up a totally new device, opened chrome, surfed a few pages and it happens again.
This makes no sense.
try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitdefender.antivirus
don't know, out of ideas really
One thing you guys may not have considered also, is that the guy you got the kdz from might have tampered with it and put adware or malware into the file...
Now, I'm in no way saying he has (Everyone on here is very trustworthy), but from all the solutions that look to have failed in this thread, that could be the only option. You can always try a factory reset, as stated above and if it's just something on the ROM then it might fix it, but if it's in the KDZ itself, the only way to get rid of it would be to flash a different file.

Is there another 5.0 Lollipop KDZ file except the one I used? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/kdz-poland-lollipop-lg-g3-20a00-t2938255)
At this point I'm willing to try everything as reseting the phone to factory settings also didn't help.
Id consider flashing the stock kdz again. But get it from here from someone known and start fresh.

Could you please point me to the file I need to download? I'm new to all this and really don't have an idea which file I need. I have the D855 version of the phone.
Thank you!
See if this is the what you're looking for.
Or here?
Or here?
Its not a bug, just webpage redirecting. Some website does that, some on both desktop and mobile version, some just one of them. One of the web page i visit lg-phone-firmware.com is one of them. In mobile version it always redirect to ads.
Viable solution is to try desktop view. Else try browser that support adblock.
Well it appears I got rid of this problem. Downgraded to KitKat, rooted my device and installed a custom ROM that I found here.
Thanks for the help guys!

Shazam app not showing "Connect to Spotify"

Hello everybody,
I hope to bump into someone with the same issue.
I got a ZE551ML 32GB, installed Shazam app, restored my taglist, wanted to restore Spotify connection, but I can't see "Connect to Spotify" option in settings.
It just shows "Connect to Rdio" - it doesn't check for the apps to be installed, so it shows that even if i don't have Rdio app on my phone.
I'm a Spotify Premium user, I was loving this feature on my previous Nexus 5, so it's a bit annoying.
Since I love this phone, I suggested it to some friends who bought it as well: all of them have the same issue.
This is still happening, since the day I bought my phone.
I opened a ticket to Shazam, they checked for the version of the phone (I live in Italy, phone is official WW version with 2yrs Italian warranty), checked for SIM card provider (I had two SIM cards, both from italian providers, H3G and TIM), checked for the latest version both of app and firmware. Nothing to do, "it should just work" they said.
I sent an e-mail to Asus support, but they replied they can't cover third party issues.
I replied that's not true, because on many new firmware's release notes, you can easily find something like "improved/fixed 3rd party app compatibility/issues", like for WW_2.18.40.12 release notes, where you can find "8. Fixed 3rd party app issue.".
I was hoping this was referring to my ticket, but no luck.
Opened a thread in official Asus forum, just one user replied having the same issue, but no replies from Asus.
It's bit old nowadays, but nothing has changed since then, even with latest updates both of app and firmware.
Since nothing changed even after latest OTA WW_2.20.40.63 and latest Shazam upgrade to 5.9.0-150904, I finally decided to go Cyanogen.
After flashing CM12.1, big suprise: installed Shazam app and... nothing has changed!
It just keeps showing "Connect to Rdio" but not "Connect to Spotify".
I can't figure out on which side the issue is.
Sorry for not posting sources but I'm not allowed yet to post links.
Thanks for reading.
Hi Soleinvisibile.
I'm in France and I'm having exactly the same problem. It seems like the problem just doesn't exist since I can't barely find any clue about this. It's quite incredible...
It's no big deal but it's quite annoying, this feature was the reason I used Shazam. It really seems to affect only Asus Zenfones so I just don't understand what is going on...
I know it won't help, but you're not alone! We can try to keep in touch here if any info comes out. Thanks for your attention. Bye.
Hi Cheumeuneu,
Thank you so much for your reply!
My post was quite verbose and I thought to shorten it, I guess its lenght wouldn't help to let the issue come out, as evidenced by zero replies since.
Anyway same for me, the feature was the reason I've been using Shazam, it's pretty annoying and even worse considering the lack of clues about it.
To me, the weirdest thing is that the issue is persistent across stock and custom ROM.
Did you root and flash or kept it stock?
Bye,
Enrico
