Hey all,
My favorite earbuds got run over by a car recently and now I don't have an excuse not to upgrade to a pair with an in-line mic, playback and volume controls. Right now I'm looking at the Woodies Blues (can't post links yet, I lurk to much. A quick search on Amazon will enlighten you) but I wanted to confirm that the volume and playback controls actually work before pulling the trigger. I've done my research but still haven't gotten a definitive answer, some people say none of the controls work, some only the play/pause button and some even claim the volume controls work so I turn to my favorite panel of experts. Tell me oh oracles of technology, does the Android platform support in-line controls and if so which features work and which don't?
On a side note has anyone here actually tried the Blues? What did you think?
Mahalo!
I've got a pair of the sony earbuds with ipod remote. (As with you boundless I lurk as well.... so no links. Search this on amazon)
Sony MDREX38iP/BLK EX Earbud with iPod Remote Control (Black)
Phone is a DX rooted Froyo. Unfortunately the remote does not control the volume. If volume up or down is pressed on the headphones it will pause the track and hitting it again plays the music.
I'm curious if anyone has figured this out as well. I would love to use the inline volume controls that my headphones have.

After many tweaks my EVO is almost perfect, but I still can't seem to figure out how to control media volume from my headset. I've tried both the ipod headset and the klipsch s4i and neither can control volume from the controls, but play/pause/skip/back do work. Suggestions?
Help please someone.
Someone please help me with this issue.

Why not use a stereo bt headset? Or try the touch slide headset, works on the evo, but I dont remember if it had volume buttons, skip.play ,reverse did have and worked nicely.
Thanks for the response! I'd really rather not have to buy another headset for something as simple as this, and it seems a little ridiculous that HTC/Google would release a product with this limitation. Is there an appropriate app?
there is no support for volume control from wire headphones yet, im hoping that somebody can make a small software package that will decode the vol+/vol- signals and adjust it accordingly..
Im going to be buying ipod headphones myself
This is very sad and one of the little things holding Android back D= Thanks for the response!
I also have the Klipsch S4i headset. I love how it sounds for speech and music. The volume controls worked perfectly when I was trying out the T-Mobile HD7 Windows Phone 7 but I sent that phone back because of the crappy T-Mobile network in my area (San Francisco Peninsula). Now I'm back on my EVO and I have no volume controls. I'd be happy to kick down $10 to any dev who can set this up for me. I'm running the latest Fresh ROM.
I don't suppose anyone has some more advice on this? I picked up playerpro, and I'm now able to play, pause, and skip with my Klipsch S5i headphones, but I can not control the volume, which is a pain to say the least.
Headset Button Controller app gave a bit more functionality (single, double, triple click), but I couldn't get it working and it also didn't have volume support.
Thanks for the comments guys.
CyanogenMod 7 has these features. Single/middle button plays/pauses and next track. iirc, +/- does next/previous track (or might do volume, not entirely sure).
Oh, and 7.1 will be getting a crapton of customizations with the inline controls...

That last link looks like it addresses what I need it to. Do you know if these fixes have been implemented already? That looks more like a suggestion than an implementation.
Anybody have any other ideas? As far as I can tell, CM7 doesn't yet implement the volume and play button controls on newer headphones with in-line controls.
anyone know if there are headphones with music control (next, pause, play...) for galaxy s2?
thanks!
im interested too for gym workout
the earbuds that came with my SGSII seemed to do this automatically with PowerAMP. hit the button on the mic for pause/play and hold it for next track. although, in the stock music app holding down the button to skip track won't work, but pause/play will.
I use a Jabra BT3030 bluetooth set. The controls are all on a dog-tag and you can use whatever headphones you desire. I'm using a set of Sennheiser MXL 60 phones because they have a nice short cord (with optional extension included), and a little loop that the BT3030 attaches to very neatly.
It's a great combo for cycling.
Also interested with this. Any good/great "regular" earphones(NOT in-ear/canal, etc) with working controls on PowerAmp?
Get the Sony DRC-BT30 BT30 Bluetooth Receiver and match it with your favorite earphones (that didn't come with volume/call control).
Has anybody tried a beats solo with control key? What keys work?
If it helps I quote myself:

Regarding volume control using different headsets with the SGS2 I've finally found a solution that works for me: Headset Droid It lets you assign different actions (including rising and lowering the phone's volume) to your headset's key/keys. I've tried it with the stock headset and works great! The link I include is for the 1 day trial version, if you try it and you like it's only 0,99€

Headset Droid
Beats Solo HD: Call(Hang), Music(On/Off/Forward/Back). Volume(Use Headset Droid).
Tried this, and yes it has a workaround with the beats solo but the commands tend to get mixed up. Like center(button) + hold = increase volume or it turns the music player off. So its better than nothing.
Will haven to check headset droid out, hoping for the best
I know this is a new product, but maybe.
http://uk.akg.com/product-detail-2821/k328sbp.html is a headset w/ microphone and vol control, but it says it's been made for the i-products (ipod/iphone...)
Does anyone know if they work with Androids, specifically SGS2s? (the mic and vol control I mean).
(for anyone who cares, I've signed up to be a guinea pig, and yes they work well, except for the volume control buttons.)
If you download th eKlipsch app from Market adn install it it can allow you to add more button type clicks on it that can help you control the volume and skip tracks etc.
It was meant for their own android headset but I have discovered it works well on iphone headsets too
Best of all it is free!
So, are the AKG K328 working perfectly with SGS2 using Klipsch Control? Can I have a confirm?
Microphone, volume (+ and −), call answer, play/pause, next/previous song are all working correctly?
Many thanks indeed
Anyone tried headphones with media Controller (Like the Galaxy S, the nokia)?
I'm looking for my car setup and I want to put a controller closer to the steering wheel and a microphone integrated, but I don't know it it'l work :|

You mean like any bluetooth stereo headphones? I'm pretty certain no wired headset will do this because the headphone jack doesn't support it.
There are quite a few standalone bluetooth stereo receivers around that you can plug generic headphones or a stereo line-out into though. I prefer the Jabra BT-3030 'dogtag' receivers, but there are plenty of others around. Just do a search on Froogle, Buy.com or any other big electronics site and you'll find them. The only real difference between them all is battery life and sound quality, they all have media player controls using standard Bluetooth profiles and they all include a condenser mic built-in.
No, I was talking about a button on the wired headphone, like the Galaxy S, to skip track, answer call, those sort of things.
From what LG answered me, it's not possible...
Downer there :|
Finaly found a spare pair of headphones from a Galaxy, with the button for the media controller.
Turns out, it works!
Long press opens voice control,
short press starts media player
two short press skips the track when playing.
There must be a standard for Android, I'll try to find the list tomorow and test it out, but anyway, good thing it works.
Anyway, good things it works! I'm running a lot, long distance, and it'll screw up any bluetooth, even S-10 (my current pair had some issue but cleaned up after drying in rice), so the good ol' button hearphones with the media controller is the best for me!
I've ordered a "seperate" microphone with a button and the input, I'll test and let you know!
I just bought some a-JAYS One+ for about 60$ The remote works with the Optimus G and most android phones.
The remote lets you:
Skip tracks
FF / Rwind
Play / Pause
Volume up / Down
Pick up calls
The sound quality is actually very good especially for bass junkies like myself. Not to mention the sleek swedish design.
I absolutely recommend them to anyone out there.
Cheers!

Hello,
Using the application "Jays Headset Control" (Play Store) we get the same result with the original headphones lg ^^
And you can change the button action in Advanced Mode...

it is not a Android feature, it is just the the extra rim on the 3.5 headphone minijack that adds controls to it. and Android have adapted it. like micro USB for charging and connecting.
open standards are always to prefer

Well, I tried with my old Nokia N95 headset which has play, forward, volume, etc. And it did not work as expected, some buttons work as a single button headset. Also bought a Samsung headset (could not find LG headsets) with a button and volume control and the volume control does not work, the volume up key replicates the button.
So it is not that standard.
Or is there an app to activate the volume and multimedia buttons on those headsets?

Hi!
Just wondering if there's a work-around to get the remote on a Iphone headset to work on a DHD?
The mic, both earbuds and the middle button is working but not the volume control/skip tracks buttons.
I'm aware that it's a hardware issue, but do you know if there's an adapter I could use to get all the buttons working?
BTW it's regarding the Logitech Ultimate Ears 500vi that I just purchased. I've been using beats before but they suck donkey balls.
