How do you watch videos on your EVO? Do you convert them and then drop the file on you sdcard? Stream from Dropbox or something else?
I usually convert them to one of the supported file types.
I just throw the video file on my sd card then use RockPlayer. I use to convert all my video files but RockPlayer can play just about all types of video files. There is a lite version on the marketplace. I dont think it can play .mkv files tho. Hope this helps.

I third this. It actually plays .mkv files just fine, or at least I haven't had any trouble with them yet. I recall you have to set it to software decoding rather than hardware, but I'm not sure if this is related to playing .mkv's or if it's for all filetypes.

You're probably right about 720p, I just checked and the videos I was watching are 624x352, which still look smooth and clear on the EVO.

He all... just thought I'd follow up. Tried a 720 .mkv file... just as I suspected. Slow and choppy. I will have to convert that file type to a mp4. so... uh... thanks!
Mkv and mp4 are just containers. As long as the codec used is h264, the video should play just fine. I have many 720p videos on my phone that play just fine. Just make sure to keep the bitrate under 3000kbps or so.

yes it does.. but no SUBS..
I've tried Naruto Shippuuden and Bleach both 720p by [Horrible Subs], Audio and Video works, but no Subs...
yeah I wanna know if there was an android video player out there, which can display embedded sub while watching hd content.
Check out this h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6902833&postcount=9 Right now it's the easiest solution.
Isn't that the OP's 'solution' ? haha
yes
he figured it out after
LOL
It still looks like there isn't a standalone player out there.
Using a few players it would either do one of the following:
1. Play the video in really good sharp resolution without dropping any frames, but here's no sound, and no subtitles. Ack!
2. Play the video in really awful quality with artifacts the size of Mount Tiwaluho but you got sound and subtitles, yet it's stuttering.
Can't win eh? Still, it seems that it is possible. The hardware is there. I think it's only a matter of time. Until then, we're better of using this workaround:
hXXp://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6902833&postcount=9
Try this
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/media_and_video/mkv-subextractor_ltlg_download.html
works fine for me
works with embedded srt and ass subs
I use mVideoPlayer, plays 720p mkvs with softsubs perfectly for me
Ah, i see The.Opethian and Volcacius beat me to it. And now I find out they just linked to one of the OPs other posts...

Hmmm Rock player failed on playback. Hmm will play with it some more
Rockplayer tries to play the WMV but the picture is all garbled and no sound. Rockplayer sees the .m4v file but says it is not activated.
MixZing works fine with WMV, IIRC.

Wow never had an issue with rock player... Used it to play mostly .avi though. Played a few .wmv files but most of my movies and video files are .avi or .mkv. Try using yxplayer, I personal prefer rock player but if it's not working then give yxplayer a shot.

Same here - doesn't play digital copy
I also tried to play my digital copy of IM2 on my HTC desire using rockplayer and get garbled picture with no sound.
Looked and yxplayer's feedback on the market and looks to be the same (or worse). Some comment that it may be a drm issue...
If anyone knows a workaround for this, that would be great!

I use tunebite. Converts to.mp4. Just make sure the file size is less than 2 gb because it wont play.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The ugly truth is any digital copy has drm and won't play natively on android no matter what those market players claim.
Handbrake can't do **** to convert drm dc's.
The only way to get your dc's onto android is to use tunebite and do a real time screen capture. I have done this 4 times now and all have been successful. If you capture it right, the final size will be smaller than the dc (mine usually trim around .8 gb's on average from the dc) and still have the same quality (tunebite finals my files at 95 - 97% quality).
A word of caution though, do not screen capture the itunes dc as it makes it harder for you to capture in 720p (if the dc is natively 720).
Good luck.
I have VPlayer Advanced and when I play an .avi video that is 624x352 it lags pretty bad...
I can't imagine watching a 720p or a 1080p video on this thing...
Anyone know a video player that is worth having? ???

modo player can play a 720p .mkv on my DHD mostly good. Not perfect but close!
The phone by default doesn't support .mkv if this video player doesn't support more formats than the phones default player then I'm not interested.
Greetings, I use and recommend "Best Video Player PRO (Summer Player)" is very good and lso read almost all video formats, only the interface is not very appealing but the rest works perfect.
Mobo player plays 480p mkvs perfectly without lag at all. Haven't tried 720p though

I Use RockPlayer. Plays everything pretty well, assuming you select the correct option for the file (hardware or software decoding).
I think you have to pay for it, but honestly I've had it that long I cant remember doing it.
Hardware wise, the DHD doesnt support much in the way of videos (or its awkward). Obviously, 720p 3gp, MP4, and mine is picky about WMV (it will play and then decide it can't play this file about halfway lol). it apparently supports AVI and XVID but I never come across any AVI encoded with MP4 ASP and MP3, hence RockPlayer.
MoboPlayer seems to struggle a little with MKV files I've noticed ... kind of lags. If the video has subtitles there's epic desyncing as well.
There's DicePlayer I guess, which could very well be the best video player on the market right now, but it doesn't support embedded MKV subtitles as far as I know so I haven't gone about buying it yet. Then again, I'm also a bit hesitant to buy it even with the subtitles working because I expect VLC to release their player in the coming month ...

not sure what your prob is. People running the same set up are having no probs. I did notice that the format looks like its 3gp. If it is 3gp that may be your prob and u need to either use a 3gp video playerthat can do 3gp like vlc or convert it to avi or mp4 format. The evo stock records in mp4 so maybe the camera app you are using can record in diferent formats.

Yeah tried playing it myself and does not work. Like i said b4 the video format that you have is 3gp and quicktime and most other players do not play that video format. If u want to play this with quicktime then u need to find a 3gp to mp4 video converter. I do not know why your video format is 3gp but that is your problem. Quicktime native compatible formats are AIFF, WAV, DV-DIF, MP3 and mp4, Also with addon components it can play ASF, DivX Media Format, Flash Video, Matroska, Ogg. So like i have said about three times already u need to convert the video from 3gp to mp4 or one of the native file formats quicktime supports. Here is a link to a pretty good converter http://download.cnet.com/AoA-iPod-PSP-3GP-MP4-Converter/3000-2194_4-10531870.html

Hi everyone,
I first got to say that I have not yet purchased GalaxyNexus. However I have a big concern in regards to 720p HD video files from the net. I realized this on my Galaxy Tab10.1 after I bought it that most HD files need to be re-encoded in order to run without lag or being choppy. I was very disappointed with that.
Would someone tell me how is the performance of mkv files on GalaxyNexus.
Thanks.

Whether it plays depends on a lot of things. The video format, (MKV is just a container), the audio format and most importantly the bitrate. A lot of desktop PCs will chunder along if the bitrate is too high for it's hardware to handle, so a phone will struggle even more.
The bottleneck seems to be the speed of the internal storage, for me. It plays stuff flawlessly, but if I play a 1080p file with a super high bitrate, it's all choppy.

The problem is the dev's actually. The account he was using to receive payment for the full version got suspended (for whatever reason), and due to that he isn't able to continue selling the full version anymore. If you were an early adopter (like I was, due to having a Asus Transformer), it's a non-issue because you already bought it. I'm not sure why the dev is taking forever to fix the issue.
EDIT:And on that note, I also must say that all MKV files I have downloaded work perfectly fine on my nexus using diceplayer. Both 720P and 1080P (only tried 1, just to see if it worked, since it is rather pointless unless you're outputting to a TV) work just fine and without any issues for me. I haven't tried any strangely encoded files yet, but so far all normal HDTV encoded files worked just fine.

It's smooth once it get's hardware decoded.
No smartphone processor can decode 1080p without lag, which is exactly why OMAP put an IVA-HD chip inside to do all the work.
Much like the rest of the members I use dice player and it plays everything i throw at it. I use to have an issue with 12mbps MP4 files but they seem to have corrected that and now it is smooth for everything i throw at it.
is there a place to buy the full version or obtain one by other cough cough means?
