HTC Desire Rapid Battery Loss - Desire General

Hi
Had a problem with my Desire over the last few days. From full charge the phone is dead in about 15 hours, most of the discharge seems to happen in the last 6-7 hours i.e charge was full before I went to sleep last night and this morning it has 5% left.
Now I haven't recently installed any new apps, phone hasn't really been used and is on standby most of the time, I don't have any e-mail or other sync's going on. Only thing running all the time is Bluetooth, but up till a few days ago phone was holding charge for 2-3 days. Now as said it dies overnight.
Any thoughts?

Mines screwing up aswell battery dies 35% in 1 hour of listning to music with screen off

Try to recalibrate your battery cache.
or
Check what has/have consumed or caused the drain (apps, syncs, OC, weak signals, settings, etc.).
Try other ROM and/or other kernel.
or
your battery or your Desire has just given up its live.

Thread for calibrating the battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7696283#post7696283
Which ROM do you use?

It could also be a hardware malfunction. I had the same problem with huge rises of battery temperature. I took my phone for warranty repair. They changed the motherboard. Now it works flawlessly.
I am using Redux 1.2 and can get two days of moderate use.
Other thing that could cause it is Rom. With Stock ROM the battery usually drains faster. Also check how many Widgets you're running and if you have any GPS or Bluetooth on.

Check if you have 'best wifi performance' ticked in Settings>wireless & networks>wifi settings>menu>advanced
I have noticed it rapidly drains the battery.

i think mines heading that way also

my battery has only been lasting me about 17 hours since i first bought it then again i do use it alot music, games, surfing on wi-fi and so on. but i still try to conserve it. leedroid chrgermod works well for me but i thought 2 days was godly battery life but apparently it isn't

Battery drain with Desire on alcohol

Hi. I know there are hundreds of threads on battery usage, but I felt I have a special story behind my test.
Lately I feel that my battery life has decreased, but I would like some second opinions on the case.
It's over a month now since I received froyo OTA, and I had some suspicions that my battery life went slightly down after that. I used it more to test the new features, so its hard to really know. However, the big problems occurred a couple of weeks ago.
At a party with a friend of mine, a friends friend literally pulls my Desire out of my hand and drops it into a mug of beer! As a joke!!
He had heard me taking about my Nokia 3720 earlier and decided to test it. However, ignorant as he was, he did not see that it was A DIFFERENT PHONE I was holding!
So it took 2 seconds in the mug, and the screen went black, and the phone was dead... Or not really, I took it out and dried it of with my t-shirt, turned it on, and the screen went garbeled green on me...
Decided that it was best to leave it alone, so I took out the battery, SIM and MicroSD, dried them off, put it in my pocket and continued the party.
But I have to admit it was kindof a partypooper for me...
Well, later that night, probably 3-4 hours later when I got home, I inserted the battery and tried to turn it on.. Screen turned on with the familiar white background, and green htc logo.. and some garbeled green at the top, argh...
I took the battery out again, left all the pieces spread out on the kitchen-counter and went to bed.
The morning after (or should I say afternoon ) I looked at the phone, it seemed as it had dried out over the night. So I put in the MicroSD, SIM and battery, crossed my fingers, and turned it on. And it worked fine, like nothing had happened, phew!
But some days after, I am sure that the batterylife has decreased quite a bit, seems to not hold a normal 12-14hour day with normal use.
I did at one point post-froyo (pre-drowning) have it running for 2 full days before charging, approx. 40 hours, not very much usage though..
So, I decided to test it starting yesterday evening.
I let it drain fully (turned it on 1 time after it died, and let it die again). Charged it while turned off, and unplugged it and turned on after approx. 1 hour of full charge (green light).
Now, I have already ordered a new phone (a Streak is on its way over the North Sea as I write this . But I wanted to do the test just for the heck of it.
My girlfriend also has a Desire running Froyo, and I notice she uses her phone WAY MORE for gaming and stuff, and only charges a little more frequent than me.
They are both AMOLED phones, I got mine in Feb, she bought hers in March.
So, here comes the timeline:
@23:30, Turned it on after fully charged, went through all homescreens to activate all widgets. Did not run any programs.
I have no specially data intense widgets, only email and weather (3hr sync). Wifi off, and 3G (H) on always, no active background.
@08:00, On my way to work, Battery indicator (i use *#*#4636#*#* to check battery status) at 88%, recieved 1 email during the night.
Battery usage says: 49% Cell standby, 49% phone not in use, 2% android system.
I have noticed my phone struggling to keep connections while travelling even short distances(pre- and post-froyo), maybe a little worse of a problem post-froyo.
Did not happen today though!
I often need a reboot to get the connection back (Flightmode often works 1 time, but not 2 times. does not activate the second time I try it, just hangs...)
It's not only the data connection, there is no cell reception at all (apparantly).
Maybe I should start a thread on that also, but it is not a big issue for me (this phone is on a free use data plan, almost never use it for calls)
Dataplan here in norway costs around 50$ btw, no other extra costs for tethering and such in norway
@09:45, at work, recieved 2 more emails. now @84%, on EDGE network. battery usage: 53% Cell standby, 45% phone not in use, 2% android system.
not that bad actually... 10:21 "on" time, with 34 minutes active-use time.
Will try to leave the phone alone some more, and do some surfing on it around noon.
@12:55, still at work, used the phone for surfing and gReader for 25 minutes, on EDGE network. Downloaded a BOL revisited episode (podcast), I usually listen to an episode via bluetooth streaming while driving to/from work.
Now @67% and 35°C ( I noticed an temp. increase). Cell standby 47%, Not in use, 41%, android system 9%, screen 3%. uptime 13:35, waketime 1:07.
It connected to H (3g) the last 5-10 minutes or so of surfing. Turned on Wifi when I was finished, to see if I notice any battery decrease.
@14:25, did another 15-20 minutes of surfing, this time on Wifi, now @62%. also was a quick trip via google maps with gps on. battery usage states: Wifi usage 3% and google maps 2% already.. seems they use a lot of battery in a short time.
Wifi is set to turn off after 15 min of inactivety.
TBC....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720717&highlight=teardown
Read that. Do a teardown and clean everything, you're out of warranty anyways.
Most likley a drop/smudge of beer etc inside short circuiting something and you'll have a slow, but increased battery drain from that.
thanks for giving me a heads up on that!
Not sure if I will take the time to fix it though, I'll have to see how much I miss it when I start using my Dell Streak
@15:35. On my way home from work. Writing using voice recognition on android. Battery level is currently @ 46%. Downloaded several emails, and 1 reply. Now connecting bluetooth for BOL streaming.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Okay now i'm home, after 40 minutes of Bluetooth streaming battery is @36%. Stats are: cell standby 39%, not in use 34%, android system 15%, screen 5%, WiFi 3%, Bluetooth 2%, maps 2%. Times are: 17:07 total, 2:49 awake.

@18:15 Surfing for 15 minutes now over 3g, and battery icon is orange.. level: 27%, awake time is now just over 3 hours.. I think it has held up quite good today, but I have really not used it as much as I normally would. And I also have a suspicion that using less WiFi helps a little on battery. Previous I have used WiFi always on to save 3g usage, but maybe it decreased battery.. anyone with a comment on that?

@18:45. Slight use of xdaapp and browser, now @18% and sinking rapidly :s

[SOLVED][Q] Battery issues?

Wondering if anyone else has had any battery issues? I went to sleep last night with about 85% or more battery, and 5.5 hours later my phone was dead....when i plugged it in for like 5 minutes to call my work and tell them i was going to be late...when i got to work my phone said 45% phone idle and 45% cell standby for battery use
none here - took phone off charger about midnight, this morning after alarm rang for the full 10 minutes, it still showed 100%
i've been watching it and am really impressed with battery life - is it possible you've got a program running in the background? - i had Startup Auditor to stop apps in the background but had that from before, on my Vibrant
on the vibrant, running a predominantly black wallpaper, screen brightness at 13%, putting phone in "airplane mode" when i sleep, keeping GPS off, data sync off etc, it'd be down to 17-22% at end of day before going back on charger
this G2, running live wallpaper (thunderstorm), no efficiency moves (ie GPS off, etc), screen brightness at 50%, phone still had 34% last night before going back on the charger - and the battery has not "conditioned" - i noticed on the past 2 phones batteries life got better after the first few weeks of use.
Nothing different than my nexus...and i was thinking maybe it was a game but that should have been killed automatically and i dont think it would say phone standby and cell idle if it was an app would it?
tonite you might try putting the phone in airplane mode when you go to bed, and turn off GPS
see what happens to battery drain overnite - if it diminishes then i'd look at what apps you've installed. there was an article on engadget not too long ago that some researchers had analyzed the 358 most popular apps, and found 30 were reporting data to their "mothership" that had not declared it or asked for permission to report data.
hope that helps
well another weird thing is, that when i bought the phone and brought it home, usually it comes with half battery and thats what it showed but i had to charge it quick with no apps really installed on it yet...Im charging now and will test to see what happens with battery...i just removed off alot of my apps.... to see whats up
I'm getting about 10 hours with regular usage though I wish I knew why Photobucket keeps starting everytime i kill it.
I hope you guys charged the phone fully before you used it first. That can play a big role in battery life.
I got my phone yesterday and haven't done any calibrations yet. I've been playing with it like you normally would if you buy a new smartphone. I took it off the charger around 9pm last night and at 7:32am right now I have about 60% left. So roughly 10.5 hours later and I've only lost about 40%. I'm very impressed by that. My vibrant would have been dead by now, it rarely lasts through the night if its not on the charger.

Battery Meter or Voltage Meter problem?

My G2 gets ghastly battery life. I've tried Juice Defender and I've recalibrated more times than I can remember. Most notifications are turned off and I'm conservative about powering off the various radios when I'm not using them. It wasn't always like that. I felt like I was getting most of a full day on one charge and loving it for many months, but something happened last summer I think. Maybe dust or moisture affected the phone. I've got a total of six batteries and three external battery chargers. No battery whether it's the OEM original, 1500mah spares that were amazing before, or the new 1800mah evo shift 4g batteries I tried out, will last more than about four hours from full charge to the 15% warning sound.
I've tried only charging in the phone. I've tried rotating batteries charged in the external chargers. Like I said, I've tried calibration scenarios of various kinds.
Last night, I took a fully charged 1800mah battery and put it in my phone and then charged the battery in the phone. The orange led never turns green when the phone is off. When the phone is on, I can just barely get the led to turn green at about 91% (starting from what should be a full charge that is reported as 80% by the phone). This takes a good 10 hours of charging. As soon as I woke the phone this morning, the battery meter started dropping while the phone was still plugged in. After unplugging, the meter drops to 80% in a matter of a few minutes.
Like I said, I tried juice defender. It only helps a little but the cost is waiting for the data radio to reconnect every time I wake the phone. I thought BT was the culprit for a while, but now it really doesn't matter if I leave it on or turn it off.
At the other end of the charge, the phone can run for several hours when the battery is supposedly between 1 and 3%. I know we are told to start charging again at 15% but my phone drops to that level in 3-4 hours of regular use. I haven't seen the phone report 100% charge on any battery in six months time, but it runs and runs at 1%. This is what bugs me. Is the phone just mis-reading how many milivolts are coming out of the battery? Why can't I complete the first step of calibration (charge overnight to the 100% mark)? Is there a hardware component that can be causing this or should it be entirely fixable in software?
Thanks for any ideas or tips

I changed radios and did RIL matching last fall based on other's comments about better battery life, 4G and GPS. While I've had faster GPS locks and maybe better 4G performance, my battery life did not improve. It may have even gotten worse.
Today I'm trying out some different CPU governor settings. The CM 7.2 RC1 default is 'interactive' and I wouldn't normally touch those settings. I think the powersave governor helped a lot, but the phone became almost unresponsive. Trying 'conservative' now. I should have read This long ago, but just got around to it today. I might invest in the SetCPU app as well.
OK, I can count on a good six hours of normal use if setCPU is holding down the max cpu frequency at night or when the screen is off. I'm still tweaking. Today, the phone crashed while playing music over A2DP and tracking a run with runkeeper. I think it needs to tick faster than 368Mhz when the screen is off.
Are you seeing improvement? I changed radios and like you havent seen much improvement. But I am a little better off than you are. My battery drain is terrible (1-3%per minute) only when connected to the internet (4g or wifi) or using navigation. If the screen is off, or if Im using non-internet apps I seem to get regular battery use. Good luck with your cpu settings.. I have ordered a new battery, but I doubt it will solve my issue. I may try tweaking my settings too soon, but Id better research more.
Just wondering do you have SuperCharger V6 installed? On my Desire Z I had some serious battery problems just as you mentioned. After I would flash my ROM (wiping the caches + reinstalling) my battery life would return to normal. But whenever I would flash SuperCharger v6 my battery life would spiral out of control. My suggestion for a ROM that handles battery life fairly well is Andromadus Audacity B2, just make sure you download and flash GAPPs (google apps). For example running that rom I have been getting very good battery life, approx. 16-20 hours of battery life with moderate use) with default CPU settings and data always turned on. I'm sure if you use Juice Defender to control your data you'll get above average battery life.
Note: Andromadus is an ICS (android 4.0) ROM

Thanks (and thanked) Ive been waiting till ICS roms are bug free and having working cameras, but I think I may just jump on it now. My battery issues are untenable at the moment on a CM7 based rom. Thanks for the advice.
I was seeing some improvement due to SetCPU profiles. However, now if I have GPS and Bluetooth on so that I can listen to music and track my run in runkeeper, the phone seems to 'crash' after about 35 minutes or so. The battery meter shows that the battery takes a nose dive and I think the phone shuts down at 1%. If I restart the phone, it might say I have 30 or 40% charge left but then it drops rapidly again. It seems like it hates the warmth of my pocket. If I let the phone out in the cool air like on my desk, I can reboot at get back to 60 or 70% even though it was just saying 3%. I'm not running SuperCharger.
I'm trying to find cheap G2s for parts on ebay now. Maybe I can at least test out my six batteries in a different phone to see if any of them are shot. They all seem to have the same problems in my phone.
This will be my final update. I bought a used G2 off ebay. The same batteries I used before now show as fully charged when I expect them to be fully charged. I will be getting a feel for general battery life over the next few days, but I expect battery life to be roughly the same. I just won't have to guess at what the current battery level really is.
I'm seeing now that the new phone will show a 60% charge when the old phone shows 15% for the same battery at about the same time.
The new phone shows 100% when topped off but if I put the topped off battery in my old phone, I see 75-80% charge.
I may try sending the old phone to HTC depending on what they offer for repair services.

I think what's happened to your old phone (and mine!) is that the onboard voltmeter chip is reading low. I've compared the on-board mV reading to a multimeter-measured battery voltage and what the phone reads as 3.9V the multimeter gets 4.2V (a fully charged Li-Ion battery).
Who knows what's behind it, but it seems like a hardware problem to me.

Battery drain issue?

Hey guys,
so I recently purchased an International HTC One X and hsve loved it so far, but I think the battery is draining too fast.
On standby, it drained from 93% to 89-92% in 8 hrs which I suppose is good, but while using, it drops pretty quick. I wanna know how many hours or how much percentage does your battery decrease by while on standby or during use?
By the statistics I have provided, do u think there's anything wrong with my battery?
PS: I used the built in battery app, go to settings>power
Thanks, Id really appreciate it if u could help out since I'm worried if my newly expensively bought phone has something wrong with it or not, ill hit the thanks button

Battery drain
I'm currently on Leedroid' ROM and the behaviour is similar to what I had with the stock rom and looks like the folowing:
Data or WiFi on, autobrightness on, autosync off
Hangs a litle on 100% then dops abruptly from 98-97% to 80% in about 4-5 hrs with a screen time under 30'
from 70% to 30% however, the battery drain "magically" improves giving 6-8 hrs of standby including 2 hrs of screen time of which the most is used to browse the net via 3G.
At the moment my stats are: 13h 50' on baterry, 2h 15' screen time, 21% left
I got a steep drop from 31% to 21%, just as I was checking the stats for this message, but bare in mind this is the first run with Leedroid (flashed last evening) so I expect things to improve.
After 10-12 days on the stock rom I remember getting some 3-3.5 hrs of screen time within 16 - 18 hrs total before reaching 10%.
So i suggest, give the battery a little time to settle, then adjust your usage habits according to what you get (like turning autobrightness off, data off etc).
I for one am waiting for some stable kernel improvments regarding the tegra power mangement (sounds cool, have no idea what I'm talking about and I expect to get some 20-30% more screen time within the same time period (18-20hrs).
I've been running a few battery tests. Last night I wanted to totally burn out the battery so I used it down to about 5% and started a youtube movie streaming over wifi at full brightness. An hour later...... it finally died.
The companion core on this thing can really confuse you are testing standby time or music and video playback.
I want a mod for the phone where I can toggle it to use 1, 2, or 4 cores. To the OS, it looks like core0 is also the companion core.
Thanks

so do you think there really is something wrong with my battery?
i read on a popular android website that they played a video on mx player in loops and it lasted for 6 hrs and 6 mins, which makes like 17 percent for every hour of viewing. I downloaded mx player, gonna watch a movie, and hope the battery drain is on par
The less battery doesnt bother me much, what does is that im worried that there MAY be something wrong with my battery, gonna try out for a day or 2, gonna see if my results can match urs, thanks
just hope theres nothing wrong with my battery
PS: i have everything stock, i unlocked bootloader, flash CWM5.8.x.x but returned to stock later.

So the browsing drained about 70% of the battery right? Suppose those 11 hours of sleep took even 10%, and u have 21% left, so u spent about 70% on the browsing right? Thanks
when you charge to 100% it drops down to 95% then charges back up to stop over charging, who ever it doesn't show you the % it just says 100% thats why you can lose ~5% in a few seconds when first taking it off charge.
yesterday i got 14 hours 9% left and had just a little over 4 hours screen time on leedroid 5.1.
playing games is a massive drain

Thanks, that's what I hope to achieve. I did a factory reset, will fully charge and see how it fares tomorrow. Btw, I don't play games on battery precisely because of the massive consumption.

Battery Fix
I had a pretty serious battery issue during my first couple days with the phone, where the battery drain was extremely fast and inconsistent, sometimes dropping 5% at a time and giving me maybe 8 hours of life total.
The issue was that the battery tracking in the phone was messed up. When you go to Settings>Power, the default setting for "Fast Boot" is on. This seems to mess up the way that battery drain is tracked. I fixed the issue by turning Fast Boot off, charging up the phone to 99% (it wouldn't reach 100, that's how bad it was messed up), then restarting it. Now, it works perfectly and easily gets me through the day with moderate/heavy usage; I watched a 30 min video streaming from youtube of wifi and lost only 7%.
The downside is now the phone takes 5 seconds longer to start up .

This is what I was looking for thanks mate!!!!!!
Why not join the Battery Stats thread that has like 20-30 pages of discussion already.. I fail to see how a new thread every day helps people to find what they want to find..

I did that, and streamed on youtube for 30 mins, lost like 9 percentage, is it good? or is there something with my battery?
All of your battery issue will be sorted out people..don't forget that One X is still running on GB kernel n so is transformer prime..Nvidia n HTC are working on the ICS kernel..n once they are out with it our HOX is gonna blow away everything in the Market in both performance n battery life

That's perfectly fine. Battery drain will never be perfectly consistent (perhaps your video had better graphics/resolution than mine did). Looks like your battery's OK now.

[Q] Battery life has suddenly shortened

Hi I have: HTC Wildfire with CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC1
In about the past 2 days my battery life has dropped considerably with the phone not lasting more then 12 hours, as opposed to the previous life of 2-3 days.
I charged it too 100% last night and this morning when I checked it it was at 20%
I have not installed any new apps, my screen usually runs on low brightness and the data connection only running on 2g/Edge and I have changed no settings lately.
I tried a battery stats wipe, no change.
I remember having that problem just after I flashed a new recovery.
It was about 80% before I sleep And when I wake up I find it 55%
I installed Sympfinity kernel and it really improved battery life.
now only 10% (sometimes less) are lost through the night.
Try Sympfinity kernel.

I Flashed CM7.2 RC2 it seems to have fixed the problem.

I advise you to install battery calibration from play store, sometimes after flashing a new rom, battery may be miss-read
tip
the battery life is also affected depending on the time you have automatic update on your phone because if you have updated very often it spends considerably battery not in use so the phone .. hechale a look at this and help us a lot of your battery greetings
Welll i used to have a similar problem on my wildfire,so i downloaded power max and used it on standard mode and used Go power master with autoswtching and other stuff...just before exchanging it for a Nexus, i had the battery to last around 40 hours with 5 hours of browsing, 3 hours of listening to music and 2 hours of gaming with heavy use of whatsapp and texting and 30-40 minutes of calling...previously my battery use to last only 10 hours...hope this will help you...you can also go up to ebay and buy an extended battery for just Rs.960 which is 3000mah...cheaper than the original smaller battery....link to the extended battery http://www.ebay.in/itm/3000MAh-Exte...4-HTC-Wildfire-G8-/140533335447#ht_1453wt_907
