hey guys... so have a bit of a problem tried to look around but dont think there really is any help.
i cant seem to get voicemails to work...is there a way to install a voicemail app that would work.. i know people have said use google voicemail but i dont want to link my phone with google voice.. i do get the message on my phone saying call 408# to get voicemail but htat just gives me 2 options i tried either and doesnt do anything.
sorry i may be sounding like a total noobie but i love the rom just wish it had a nice voicemail app. any help is greatly appreciated
edit:::: just installed VVM using sprint vmm.apk and i seem to get a notice on top now with me having to call in for the messages... also the text 9016 i did blacklist using chomp sms so if theres any other thing i can do to get a notice or something i dont mind calling in for vm..but makes u have to kinda keep checking phone to see if you got anything this way.

I've never tried it before, but I've heard good things about Youmail. I like Google voice, but it seems like a lot of others also like youmail, so give it a shot and see if its what you're looking for. Should be available in the market.

In the settings menu, did you put your device's phone number in the slot for the voicemail number? If not, do so.

hey doug...just erased the *86 from it and put my phone # but still same thing... any other ideas? also any way i can clear the sprint VMM thing its just up on top status bar even if i dont have any messages
Go to Menu-Settings-Call settings. Under Voicemail Service, select "my carrier" and underneath it, select "voicemail settings" and then type in your phone number without any parenthesis or hyphens. That *should* work for you. It does for me. As for the Sprint VVM, I don't use it. As a matter of fact, I delete it from the /system/app folder using a system level file manager like Root Explorer.

hey doug... thanks for getting back.. i have done that and still same thing... now if i dial the voicemail app it lets me check it but i dont get notifications as to me having voicemail... and if i go in to check i get another text as if i got something even though its empty

OK I know this has been brought up a few times in the CM threads. I get this ghost VM notification on CM6 and on all the nightlys. I also am getting this ghost VM notification on the MIUI rom. I do NOT get this notification on ANY sense ROMs I have tried.
I read this Forum everyday as much as I can. I have tried search. Every thing that comes up close to what I have going on doesn't seem to get fully answered as to why this is coming up on some phones and not others.
I flashed CM6 and a few nightlys on my Wifes phone and She has NEVER received the *86 VM notification.
I am always updated to the most current PRL, PRI and NV. Nothing I have tried will clear this message. On the CM6 ROM I can hit the clear button under the notification bar and that clears it for a little while but then the damn thing comes back.
Can anyone explain this and offer up a FIX. I know I'm not the only one.
Any one have any help on this?

Thank you Brutus for the input.
I know all about that part of the set-up. This DOES NOT get rid of the Ghost notification. I still will get a notification that I have a voice mail (and YES I have checked to make sure my VM's are cleared out).
Just FYI I use google voice when I am on CM6 or nightlys. Google Voice works great but still will not clear the VM notification.

Dont skip my post I am going to say two diffrent things . First normaly you get the notification because you received a voicemail. The stock rom has a code writen in to block that text so that you dont see the notification when you receive a voicemail.
Now Jetdr I will try to answer your question here. I think your voicemail hasnt been provisioned. Click on your VVM app and hit menu, when you hit menu you should have 3 options, compose, search and settings. If you have a 4th option that says unsent or undelivered click it. When VVM sets up, it automaticly sends a voicemail to the server to setup your VVM. If that message doesnt get sent then it probably never will. You will have to uninstall the VVM.Apk and reinstall the app. One time when I was setting up CM6 I had to install the voicemail apk several times before I got it to provision correctly. If it doesn provision a minute or two after you install it then its not going to. Not sure if this is whats causing your ghost voicemail text but I am thinking this is it. The easiest way to tell is to just click the vvm app and see if it shows four options or three. It should only show three.
If you are using google voice you dont still have the sprint VVM installed do you? If you dont have the sprint VVM installed then I am not sure whats causing your issue considering my directions to fix your issue is in regardes to the sprint vvm app.
Hope that helps.
I've tried all that and more.... nothing fixes it. I've concidered calling sprint but don't want to ruin my insurance..

Twilk... thanks so much for the response. I did all you suggested and I flashed back over to the newest MIUI ROM and I still have the VM notification. I made sure I didn't have any voice mails before I flashed. The notification will not clear even with the settings selected to not show.
Initially it has the *86 number but when I change the VM settings to my number it of course then comes up in the drop down box with my number.
The same thing happens on CM ROMs.

My notification says 4 voicemails... so I'm wondering if when I rooted my phone I had voicemails.. I don't really listen to my voicemails.. i'd rather just receive a text from someone... I just wish that I had made sure to clear my box before I rooted.. not sure if this is the reason for it... but it doesn't seem like there are many users with this problem. I'm sort of anti-twitter or I would ask cyanogen myself.. this is soo annoying! Especially since I hate voice mail to begin with.. I don't read my bills much, but I think sprint charges for voicemail.. anyway I can cancel my voicemail service? Also they charge me to keep a spending limit.. I want to call sprint and ask to cancel my voicemail..

Updates ???
Feb 3 - 2011
Anybody ever figure this one. Or do we just clear the message on each reboot?
Clear dalv. and cache, then change *86 to your mobile number then block 9016 from your sprint account.I added youmail and mine works perfect.I get txt and VM very quick. If the person that left you the voice mail is in your contacts it will show them as leaving the VM and you can just tap on there pic and it will play the ones they left you.
And I have no phantom notifications or anything odd.

Here. That's the only known way to get rid of it. It's a PITA but it works.
I have a voicemail constantly in my status bar even tho when I try to call it doesn't say anything and when I go to visiual voicemail nothing new. It's annoying any idea for a fix? Thanks

what rom are you using.
If you're running an AOSP rom, that's a known bug. There is a thread floating around here with instructions on how to get rid of it. It involves flashing a stock rom, then activating an old non android phone, deleting all messages, reactivating the evo, updating profile and prl and then restoring your AOSP nandroid.
Not sure if it's worth all that

HAHA classic answer. I was thinking the same thing...that is a bunch of doo doo to get rid of a VM icon. WHOA!
I don't know if anyone has tried this, but whenever I had this issue with my old non android phones, I would have somebody call and leave me a message, and then I'd call my VM and delete the new message. It always fixed the notification when there weren't actually any messages. I don't know if the same would work with an android phone.

It doesn't. The only way is to call sprint, activate an old "dumb" phone, have sprint leave you an urgent voicemail, delete it, reactivate your android and it's all good.
I used to say it isn't worth it, but the 30 minutes it took to get rid of it was worth it to me. That damn icon and occasional notification sound just eats at you over time.
I want Google talk to handle my voicemails, but after flashing End of Days last night (and subsequently, to restore to make it stop, MikFroyo), my google talk app handles all my incoming communications.
Here's the thing. I don't want it to. I like that it delivers my voicemails, but my set up on both mikfroyo and end of days both accommodate for messages. My Google Talk widget is on the far right screen on both.
What can I do to make it stop taking my texts but leave the voicemail?
I would uninstall it, reinstall it, but upon that, disable the text handling feature.

Is that part of the install process or is that something I can get to somewhere in settings?
I forgot to mention, when I uninstall it, I don't get any texts anyone sends me until I re-install it. My voicemails go to my text message inbox...so it's kind of a screwy circle.

Well I haven't used talk yet.. [no one to try it with], but for google voice it is a parameter that can be enabled/disabled, and I think that may be overriding it.

Figured it out.
It wasn't entirely my fault, as the check boxes are cleverly named.
Here's the process (for anyone viewing this who wanted to know the answer):
Open up google voice inbox
Hit menu>more>settings>notifications and sync
*Edit* Check the box called Notifications via Text Message. It'll say you'll receive double notifcations. Hit okay, we'll fix that problem in a second.
Then, under that, disable all inbox notifications for Google Voice. This will prevent double notifications.
This will send the messages BACK to the stock messaging app (and to your GV inbox as well, but since you turned off GV notifications, you won't get a double notification for a text). The only downside is GV will text you every time you get a voicemail (which is no big deal). Other than that, everything is back to normal.
Thank you Teh Roxxorz for putting up with my GV-noobness until I figured it out

Well the box are fairly deceptive...decepticons I'm sure, but no noobyness, I actually learned something.
so is this still the setup? or did you change anything else? I made the porting mistake today and the google voice texting is driving me crazy. almost as bad as 9016 texts
thanks
Just curious. I had this happen to me as well but I thought it was because I linked my Sprint number to GV and thought that it is now taking over everything. I personally deal with the fact that GV takes over my messages (doesn't work for Safereader on Vlingo) but I like that texts pop up on my computer due to the GV extension for Chrome.
Did you link your GV to your Sprint number as well? Or does everyone that installs GV now have it take over their texts?

I linked my Sprint number to my GV and that's when it started sending texts to my GV instead of my regular messaging app. Before I linked it up, it only routed my voicemail to my GV inbox. It was very frustrating to me, as in the aosp rom and the sense roms I use I have my messaging apps set up where I like them and it's a pain in the ass to incorporate a GV widget into my set up ergonomically.
The process I outlined above works no matter what you're using (froyo, gingerbread with and without sense). I've used it on End of Days (which is a CM7 kang) and MikFroYo and it was the same process.
I haven't used it on my computer at all, so I don't know anything about that.
POsting here because it was first google result and I found an updated fix. Im on stock 4.4.4 Oneplus
Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>Voice+>click disable...
Slight change
So made the awful mistake of trying to use google voicemail and I absolutelY HATE HATE HATE it. I've tried to get rid of it uninstalled the AP even did a wipe and reflashed my rom but it still highjacks my SMS. Messages and my voice mail.
God I HATE this application please help me!!! I've searched and tried everything I can find but I can't seem to get rid of this virus software.
I just wanna use sprints vvm and SMS.
Log into Google voice on your computer and change the text settings back. If you accidentally ported your number to Google, unport it. There is an option there. I did the same before and there is a thread about fixing it.
You will get through this ...

Its easy to screw up your voice mail when playing with Google Voice. I did this just a couple weeks ago...
Here's how to fix it:
1) Go into your VVM app.
2) Hit menu
3) Select "Compose"
4) Send a blank message to "[email protected]"
5) Hit "record" then "stop" as soon as the stop button becomes available.
6) Hit "send"
Within a minute or two, your voice mails should begin downloading like normal.
You shouldn't have to reboot after this.
Thanks! I did this, and I now get 9016 messages telling me that I have a new vm, so thats good, atleast i'm getting notified, but I still have to call in to hear the messages. VVM is still not getting the messages.
I uninstalled google voice and youmail btw

I'd give Sprint a call. They may need to re provision your voice mail.
Are you using a 3rd party SMS app, by any chance? The same thing happened to me a few days ago when I installed GO SMS and then turned off the stock message app's notifications.
I am using go sms intact, so what should I do, just turn back on stock notifications? Thanks btw!
when enabling youmail it sends a code to your Sprint VVm to re reoute it. when you want to switch back you need to call Sprint.
that was it alright, uninstalled go sms pro and got all my VVM's now! yay! Thank you!
Anyway to actually keep go sms and get my vvm? I'm assuming jsut a setting that I need to tweak?

There's a setting in GO SMS that let's you disable the stock SMS... This is what breaks the VVM. Instead, all you need to do is go into the stock SMS, hit menu, and turn off the "display notifications" option.
At least, that is what worked on my Moment last week. Since ET has a black background sms app, I haven't felt an urgent need to replace it yet... Although I really DO dislike the bubble-style display...
