Its easy to screw up your voice mail when playing with Google Voice. I did this just a couple weeks ago...
Here's how to fix it:
1) Go into your VVM app.
2) Hit menu
3) Select "Compose"
4) Send a blank message to "[email protected]"
5) Hit "record" then "stop" as soon as the stop button becomes available.
6) Hit "send"
Within a minute or two, your voice mails should begin downloading like normal.
You shouldn't have to reboot after this.
Thanks! I did this, and I now get 9016 messages telling me that I have a new vm, so thats good, atleast i'm getting notified, but I still have to call in to hear the messages. VVM is still not getting the messages.
I uninstalled google voice and youmail btw

I'd give Sprint a call. They may need to re provision your voice mail.
Are you using a 3rd party SMS app, by any chance? The same thing happened to me a few days ago when I installed GO SMS and then turned off the stock message app's notifications.
I am using go sms intact, so what should I do, just turn back on stock notifications? Thanks btw!
when enabling youmail it sends a code to your Sprint VVm to re reoute it. when you want to switch back you need to call Sprint.
that was it alright, uninstalled go sms pro and got all my VVM's now! yay! Thank you!
Anyway to actually keep go sms and get my vvm? I'm assuming jsut a setting that I need to tweak?

There's a setting in GO SMS that let's you disable the stock SMS... This is what breaks the VVM. Instead, all you need to do is go into the stock SMS, hit menu, and turn off the "display notifications" option.
At least, that is what worked on my Moment last week. Since ET has a black background sms app, I haven't felt an urgent need to replace it yet... Although I really DO dislike the bubble-style display...

I want Google talk to handle my voicemails, but after flashing End of Days last night (and subsequently, to restore to make it stop, MikFroyo), my google talk app handles all my incoming communications.
Here's the thing. I don't want it to. I like that it delivers my voicemails, but my set up on both mikfroyo and end of days both accommodate for messages. My Google Talk widget is on the far right screen on both.
What can I do to make it stop taking my texts but leave the voicemail?
I would uninstall it, reinstall it, but upon that, disable the text handling feature.

Is that part of the install process or is that something I can get to somewhere in settings?
I forgot to mention, when I uninstall it, I don't get any texts anyone sends me until I re-install it. My voicemails go to my text message inbox...so it's kind of a screwy circle.

Well I haven't used talk yet.. [no one to try it with], but for google voice it is a parameter that can be enabled/disabled, and I think that may be overriding it.

Figured it out.
It wasn't entirely my fault, as the check boxes are cleverly named.
Here's the process (for anyone viewing this who wanted to know the answer):
Open up google voice inbox
Hit menu>more>settings>notifications and sync
*Edit* Check the box called Notifications via Text Message. It'll say you'll receive double notifcations. Hit okay, we'll fix that problem in a second.
Then, under that, disable all inbox notifications for Google Voice. This will prevent double notifications.
This will send the messages BACK to the stock messaging app (and to your GV inbox as well, but since you turned off GV notifications, you won't get a double notification for a text). The only downside is GV will text you every time you get a voicemail (which is no big deal). Other than that, everything is back to normal.
Thank you Teh Roxxorz for putting up with my GV-noobness until I figured it out

so is this still the setup? or did you change anything else? I made the porting mistake today and the google voice texting is driving me crazy. almost as bad as 9016 texts
thanks
Just curious. I had this happen to me as well but I thought it was because I linked my Sprint number to GV and thought that it is now taking over everything. I personally deal with the fact that GV takes over my messages (doesn't work for Safereader on Vlingo) but I like that texts pop up on my computer due to the GV extension for Chrome.
Did you link your GV to your Sprint number as well? Or does everyone that installs GV now have it take over their texts?

I linked my Sprint number to my GV and that's when it started sending texts to my GV instead of my regular messaging app. Before I linked it up, it only routed my voicemail to my GV inbox. It was very frustrating to me, as in the aosp rom and the sense roms I use I have my messaging apps set up where I like them and it's a pain in the ass to incorporate a GV widget into my set up ergonomically.
The process I outlined above works no matter what you're using (froyo, gingerbread with and without sense). I've used it on End of Days (which is a CM7 kang) and MikFroYo and it was the same process.
I haven't used it on my computer at all, so I don't know anything about that.
POsting here because it was first google result and I found an updated fix. Im on stock 4.4.4 Oneplus
Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>Voice+>click disable...

Unfortunately each time I try to post this question, I'm getting the following error - even though there are no links. The details of my problem, therefore, may be spread across several comments in this thread as I attempt to include them all.

I flashed SyndicateRom Frozen 1.2 yesterday, and am LOVING it so far! Besides a known bug with the missed call info displayed on the glass lock screen, I have only one problem with my phone right now.
While getting all my apps reinstalled & set back up, I decided on a whim to install Google Voice. During the install wizard apparently it took over my phone. I thought I'd cancelled out in time, but when sending a text msg this morning a friend told me it was showing up w/ my GV number. I removed GV, and through their website I deactivated their voicemail.
So now when I text, it shows my correct number. I'm making & receiving calls ok. But when an incoming call goes to voicemail, the Visual Voicemail app never notifies me of a voicemail, and instead I get a weird text msg like this:
(to be continued)
Wow, 5 minute posting limit imposed too. this is fun!
/ / ANDROID : < caller's phone # > has sent you a Sprint Voice Message. Call 408 - 970 - 0000 to listen. MMSN,15ec6a1b4,1fc6,V69A / tC1Nqr / / CM
(spaces added to foil the system from thinking I'm posting a URL)
(to be continued)
(hopefully I can get the rest in this time)
That last part after the MMSN changes each time.
I'm able to press/hold 1 to access my voicemail, but when I go into the VM app, there's nothing there.
I tried restoring from TitaniumBackup - that brought a couple of my old voicemails back, but still nothing new, and I still get the text messages.
I tried sending a voicemail to activate @ vvm.sprint.com through the voicemail app - that results in a return text message saying:
/ / ANDROID : * @ vvm . coremobility . com has sent you a Sprint Voice Message... yada yada yada
I've also seen texts like this:
/ / ANDROID : Provisioning successful CFGv320c.0=07cbKhXuKph / / CM
I also tried installing a 5.1.0.52 apk (can't locate the URL I eventually tracked down at the moment).
Still nothing.
I just spent an hour on a support chat w/ Sprint. We tried *38, *720; rebooting more times than I can count, and now I'm at the point where he's reset "something" and it's supposedly going to start working for me in the next hour. Call me a skeptic.
Is it something on Google's end? Sprint's? My phone? Has anybody else worked through this before? I just want my vm app to work like it always has.
TIA!
I once again found the URL where I downloaded the 5.1.0.52 apk:
https://upgradeserver.coremobility.com/prod/sprint/2.1/5.1.0.52/vtt-sprint.apk
(and woohoo, looks like I can post URLs now)
Any ideas on this?
Using Titanium I uninstalled voicemail, rebooted, reinstalled, and am still getting the text messages.
Would reflashing be an option? I hate to do it since I finally have everything set up just the way I like - but I need to get this fixed.

I don't think the issue has to do with google voice. I am having the same issue with SFR 1.2 and I never installed GV. I have tried clearing data, I have tried to reactivate my VVM, I have tried restoring a titanium backup as well.
Everything in VVM seems to work, but it never receives messages.
If you find a fix, post it here so those of us having the issue can get it working too.
EDIT: I figured out my issue was actually with Handcent. The VVM application requires messages to be passed from the stock SMS application to DL VVM messages. If you have handcent and are using 3.9.5 go into settings>default applications> and check "disabled" and your VVM will start working again. Hope this helps someone other than me.

Interesting... I've always used Handcent (since my Hero days). I vaguely remember setting it to "All (SMS & MMS)". I changed it back to "Disable" and will see what happens. So far none of the voicemails on the system are downloading (when I dial in it tells me there are 9 new messages). I don't have a landline to leave a test message, so it'll be a while before I can get somebody to call me to test.
Thanks for the past - it would be great if that's all it takes to fix it! After changing this setting, you're no longer getting those strange text messages either?
I can't remeber where it is, but on google.com/voice ,log into your account, there is a setting that can be changed, also a # to dial, I wish I could remeber, its #?? To disable google voice, but that's probably not your problem, I bet its a setting on gvoice website...

It looks like changing that setting in Handcent referenced above has corrected the problem - I have voicemail working again w/o those annoying text messages! Thanks for your help!

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! This problem has been driving me insane for five days. Handcent 3.9.7 was the culprit on my Samsung Epic 4G as well. I've been having this problem since the GB update on my Evo Shift. This solution works!
So, I did the GPS fix on June 21st with the ##code# and the msl code. After that, my parents said they sent a text, but I haven't gotten it. Most people use my google voice number, but a few have the old sprint number.
Anyway, I can send a text. I just don't receive a text message. I booted in a march cm6 backup and couldn't get text messsages that way either. Could send, just not receive. I can make and receive calls, and voicemails go to my google voice number.
I have a stock sense backup from december that I can boot into, but am getting tired of rebooting.
Any suggestions. Open for just about anything.
I decided to do a 786 reset, and it cannot update my profile. I am hoping that is because i have a triangle above my wireless signal. Kinda out in bfe as of right now.
My messages will randomly go to google voice instead of messages. That could be a problem as well.

I had this problem yesterday after a fresh flash of CM7.1, and stumbled upon the answer. I wasn't receiving text messages in Messaging OR Handcent SMS - and I have my sprint number ported over to Google Voice. I went over to the Voice app and went to Settings>Sync and Notifications and made sure that Text Message Notification was selected. When I did, the SMS messages going to GV went to my messaging apps too.
Conversely, you could just use GV as your messaging app...

This works like a charm. I am going to post this link in a couple of other places where people are running down CM. Double Thanks!
The problem I've been having seems to have been asked a lot of times in several forums, but rarely answered directly. It had nothing to do with Google Voice, the ROM (I use SRF 1.2). I had to look through so many of these before FINALLY finding the very easy answer so I thought I'd post it here in case it helps someone else.
The issue is that I started receiving a weird text message from Sprint indicating, "...has sent you a Sprint Voice Message. Call 408-970-0000 to listen...". I wasn't receiving any voicemail notification, though, and voicemails weren't showing up in Visual Voicemail. When I finally called into voicemail, I realized I had several waiting for me -- ones I never realized I had because there was no notification!
What it turns out is that this problem is apparently almost always caused by changing the SMS application. In my case, I had installed Handcent. To fix this in Handcent, just go to menu->settings->Application Settings->Default Messaging application, and select "Disable". (In my case it was set to SMS.)
After I made that change, all of a sudden I started receiving notifications, all of my older messages finally appeared in Visual Voicemail, and I stopped receiving those strange Sprint texts.
If you use GO SMS, I understand there is a similar way to disable setting the GO SMS as default as well.

Yeah, I'm using GoSMS Pro for text messages and was getting the exact same thing with the same 408 number. I backed up my texts and settings and un-installed GoSMS, rebooted the phone, but still had to "call in" to voicemail (old school voicemail, not visual) but I think from here on out, I should get visual voicemail normally again. We'll see.
Thanks for posting!
I've been using Google Voice for over a year now, and YouMail before that on my Palm Pre 2, so I haven't used Verizon's voicemail in a long time.
My issue is, every time that I get a text, I also get new voicemail notifications for voicemail that I have already listened to. Sometimes I will get "10 unread voicemail" notifications, most of the time it's one or two unread VM's, it is very annoying.
I've reinstalled the app, cleared data, and I've marked all VM's in Google Voice unread and then read - nothing works
Any other ideas?
I think there is a setting you can change so it does/doesnt notify you via sms/email when you get a vm.
You need to change this on a computer, not the app.

I have the same issue on my Nexus 4, 4.2.2. It is very annoying and the fact that this obvious bug has not been dealt with does make me wonder if Google Voice is going the way of Google Reader.... No devs. Maybe Babble will solve it... The only alternative I have found is turning off the integration and sending a text for the voicemail to the phone. Pretty kludgy.
Ugh, hoping for complete Babble overhaul as well. The entire app is a mess really

I agree with this. My problems were different than yours. I didn't get notifications on a regular basis. Then I'd get 10 notifications for messages I never received. Sometimes a phone reboot would send messages to me, but not always. My gmail account had the notifications but they weren't pushed to the app.
I got tired of it, and went back to sprint VM. I wish sprint visual voicemail was an option on this phone. - Note, I am NOT rooted, and use this for business and cannot root (company policy).
I just found this thread when I went searching for solutions to this same issue. Did anyone figure out a solution or a workaround?
I'm also experiencing the same issue.
Me too. Two different phones now. 2013 moto X and droid turbo 64 gig. A lot of times for me it does not seem to be triggered by the reception of a text message. It will just happen. It also seems like it's just related to a few messages in my voicemail. This morning, I got a notification from a voicemail from August 5th that I listen to that day and have been notified maybe 3 or 4 times since that it existed. I'm about ready for the kludgy workaround mentioned earlier to turn off notifications on my phone and turn on text message notifications for it. Also hoping that this post will spark some new interest in fixing this problem or even better remind someone to post a solution that they found.
google voice app settings
I have had the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S3 ever since I started using a Google Voice number. I get my google voice voicemails in Hangouts, so there should be no reason for me to receive a voicemail notification for them. I was just looking through the Sync And Notications section of the Settings inside the Google Voice app, and I found that I can uncheck the voicemail notications. Hopefully this will not affect my receiving notifications for my regular phone number (the one attached to the phone), or receiving hangouts messages with the Google Voice number voicemails.
