I currently have CM7 running on a MyTouch3G Slide.
I would like to change it over to the most recent OTA (2.2)
Is there a way to do this WITHOUT loosing S-OFF?
and retaining my boot/loading screen?
Thank you for any help.
No, you will lose root and s - off
Well thats a bummer...
Do you know if there is a Release of the OTA 2.2 that I can use with ROM Manager? A release that has no modifications to it?
CR had released the rooted stock OTA a while ago, you can look in the forums, it should still be there. Actually, here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928250
Also, nbetcher has a well polished ota that will not effect root or s off

ok so, i rooted using simple root, then updated to fully rooted 1.47, and then i installed a kernel that made the fps on nova screens go higher, and better multi touch, and stuff, so i wanted to know how will i get this froyo to go on my phone with root still? do i have to erase the kernel?
Updating with ANY OTA will break your root. Just wait a few days for a rooted version of Froyo to show up on the forums.
no you didnt understand, i know that will happen , but i wanted to know if it was possible to keep my kernel i have and somehow have the froyo update?
It just depends on the dev that puts together the new rom, youll know when it comes out
I've been using my EVO for a while, and I did OTA to Froyo last night. I would like to try root it after a while, just want to know if there were anyone starting to work on the way for the EVO after Froyo upgrade?
Or, for non-rooted evo, can i do downgrade to old version official ROM, then root it?

Not possible yet...if you were previously rooted and updated to OTA im sure you knew what you were doing and the consiquences because its all over the forums...for now you're just going to have to wait it out....no word on root-able 2.2 yet.
I know unrevoked is working on a root but unless it has full nand unlock I wouldn't use it.
Well will be happy when someone does I want a stock rooted 2.2. Now im also wondering if there is a new way we have to root. Seems like everytime we get an update they have to come up with a new way to root. I have looked and read almost everything. Was wondering if someone can help a little. Sorry for hi-jacking OP.

almost every update they will fix the current way we root. there already is and has been a stock 2.2 rooted in development forums. Before you can use it you have to be rooted however and if you are already on stock 2.2 that could be a while for them to find a way to exploit a bug to let you root again.
OK was making sure that rooted stock was good. Also i thought there wasnt a way to root yet from a 2.2, just making sure. Thanks!

You are right.. If you have 2.2 unrooted on your phone you cannot root it at this time. However if you have a 2.1 rooted phone you can flash a 2.2 Rooted ROM. Rooting a ROM pre-installed is different than rooting a ROM that is already installed on your phone.

nah, i didn't root my phone on 2.1. and i do know if i rooted, I should avoid official OTA when it cames, cuz it's highly possible to brick your phone, and at least, you will ruined your root for sure.
I guess i have to wait for a while to see someone publish confirmed way to do that.
what about downgrade? if so, how does it work?
You cannot downgrade. The upgrade to 2.2 updates your HBOOT. None of the RUU's will accept this updated HBOOT, causing the installation to error out.
Sorry man. You're just going to have to be patient on this.
So I justed rooted my phone and the first thing I wanted to try is the Wireless Tether app. It seems that I'm able to get my laptop connected to the wireless but no internet connection. Looks like I might need the Netfilter-enabled kernel to make this work. If so anyone of you know how to get this enabled or install? I know it will work with a custom ROM but I like the stock Sense ROM and I'm still waiting on the official Fresh 3.2 release. So in the mean time it would be great to get it to work on a stock rooted 2.2 ROM.

Install this and you should be good to go.
You are awesome, that apk did the trick. Uninstall the one I install from the market and install this one worked. Thanks a lot for you help.
Glad to help
Hi, I am Wondering what you mean by Stock Rooted 2.2 Rom. I have one of the First released Evo's. I have done a number of things to it. Right Now I am Running 1.47 with Full root (Unrevoked 4 ever s-off) I have Clock work Recovery. I am trying to get to 2.2. I sounded like I would be able to just revert Recovery and Flash the OTA to 2.2 then install the newest Wireless tether. That didn't work. It appears that super user wasn't working right so I uninstalled super user and Applied the newest version from the market.
I still can't get my phone upgraded. I tried flashing a rooted 2.2 but got stuck in an Endless reboot cycle.
I am just wondering what 2.2 Rom you used. I would like to keep my phone a stock as possible with the exception of being able to run wireless tether and my other root programs (autostarts, root explorer, titanium)
I just can't figure out what I am missing
Thanks,
I'm sure he's talking about the new root method for evo's that had the official 2.2 release installed. Once you go back to 2.1 and root they have you install a rooted version of stock 2.2 build with sense.

THANKS!!!!!
You made me look in a Different Direction. I was able to Apply the Sprint OTA update Using Clockwork and before rebooting Apply the 22root.zip people have been using to root on the 2.2 phones to Upgrade (No Data Loss) my phone a completly stock Sprint Software with 2.2 rooted.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting the .apk! I was having the exact same problem as the OP, and this fixed it for me too! I wonder what's different about this apk vs. the one in the market?

It is a rebuild that they are testing for froyo. The one in the market is for eclair.
You can get all the experimental versions and information and updates here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
As long as i install the file, it works awesome.
Do u install on phone or comp and how do u do it I used unrevoked 3.32 to root but wifi-teather needs netfilter enabled kernel what do I do?
I just tried to load the HTC update 3.26.651.6 to 3.29.651.5 on an unrevoked EVO and ended up getting the little droid dude and a triangle with a exclamation point inside of it.
What does this mean? Is this an error and/or was I suposed to do something to load the software? Do I even want or need this update? Tethering at 4G is currently working great w/o the update.
same thing happened to me.
I think I'm just gonna install the fresh rom through recovery

It's probably failing if you removed any of the stock Sprint applications.
This is also assuming you are running the stock ROM.
The main reason to get the 3.29 update is that this unlocks the 30FPS cap on the EVO. The average FPS on this kernel seems to be in the low 50's. Everything feels pretty snappy. Really good update.
I'm really against updating OTA through Sprint when you're rooted, since bad things may happen (lose root, etc).
3 methods you can do:
1. Install the stock ROM backup as it was when you first rooted (you did backup immediately after rooting before you did anything,... right???). Then run the update and let it break root. Then run Unrevoked 3.21 again.
2. There's a method in the Development section on how to force the 3.29 update on your phone.
3. Install a custom ROM that includes this update. (Fresh 3.3.0.1 I know uses this update)
Thanks for the clues.
I do not beleive that I removed any of the stock apps and my rom should be stock. Yes I am locked at 30fps & I have heard good things about the battery life associated with the upgrade. I guess I started running before I was walking so I only did several drag and drop backups. I have since TB and nand backed do not like the Sprint upgrades, tried anyway and it did not work. Downloaded dev upgrades and will attempt them.
Thanks and sorry about the learning curve issues.
I too am getting the Triangle/Exclamation Point & Droid Dude after attempting to update....ugh, how do I fix???
Sprint updates do not work on a rooted device. Un root or re-rom
If your rooted do not ever try two update your phone via Sprint you could brick phone.

i rooted my evo when the 2.2 version came out. now it is trying to do a ota update everyday and seems to be dragging a$$. is there a new update i should do or can i do the ota update? pretty new to this stuff i just wanted the wifi hotspot unlocked when i rooted
Yes Sir, hit up the Development thread and find a stock rom that is updated to 3.30.651.3. This will get ya all up to date. To my knowledge if you rooted and used Unrevoked Forever then you could apply the ota and still reman rooted but don't quote me on that.
ya i thought unrevoked forever was what was used to root it but not 100% sure. so is there a guide to doing the update?
guides...walk thrus? any info to help be great total noob here
