What do kernals do to the phone? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I'm running CM7.0.2, I wanted to know what kernals do to the phone, what is their function and should I install this one in the screenshot I took in my ROM manager?

Also wanted to know that, is there any need to wipe data n cache while installing the kernal coz I've seen it gives two options to check, one is make back up of current ROM which I did already, there's no need to wipe data n cache right? Else I might lose everything

For ease of understanding, think of the kernel in relation to Android as DOS is related to Windows; its the underlying code connecting applications, etc. to needed drivers, CPU, memory, etc.
Which kernel you flash is dependent on your personal preference; some like screaming speeds and don't mind charging often, others prefer not to charge often, etc.
Your device already has a kernel so, there's no real need to flash one unless you're wanting to try a new one out to see if it fits your needs better; when you do flash, always wipe cache and dalvik.
As for your screenshot, its a bit blury but it appears to be Pershoots; he both overclocks and undervolts his kernels giving you a bit more speed without the battery drain, just make sure you flash a compatible version (one is for CM7 #31 and above, the other is for Froyo and neither will work with Sense).

Oops sorry for the screenshot. Thanks bro. BTW I flashed the kernal, somebody told me to but I didn't wipe cache or dalvik cache, and I'm using the phone currently with the kernal. What should I do now? Go back to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache ?

I don't know why isn't it uploading the image.
Bro here is what I flashed,
KERNAL 2.6.32.39-OC-UV-XTRA-Neon_FP
But I didn't wipe cache or thedalvik cache

Its not necessary to flash cache/dalvik though, it is recommended. As far as the kernel, just make sure you flashed the one for your build (Froyo/Gingerbread).

Aite buddy as u r saying its no issue if I didn't wipe cache n dalvik, I'll leave it as it is and yeah its made for gingerbread

Kernal version in settings doesnt change?

I just flashed a kernal for the first time but when I go into my settings in miui rom it still says the previous kernal is this normal? How do I know if i flashed it correctly? Thanks

Go into recovery, back up, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the kernel in which you want.
I did that before but for some reason when I go to wipe calvh and click yes it just sends me back to the main recovery screen and doesn't show it complete at the bottom. Has this happened to anyone else?

Try doing a battery pull and then try again. Hold the vol + down to boot into recovery.

Let me guess, clockworkmod?
I think... bc my backups are saved in clockwork folder. Sorry im new is clockworkmod bad? Can I change it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
People say that clockwork doesn't wipe properly. When I had it, it did the same thing that it's doing for you. CHoose wipe dalvik and it does nothing but kick you back to the previous menu. I switched to Amon_RA a while ago and it's been great. The easiest way to switch would be to use ROM Manager to flash alternate recovery. Just be sure to do a nandroid right away if you do because you can't restore clockwork nandroids with Amon and vice versa.
Back to your original problem- What version of MIUI are you on (I know you told me before but I forgot) and what kernel did you try and flash?
Miui 1.1.24

Its not "bad," but some users have issues with it. If you want to change it, you can go into rom manager, flash alternate recovery, and select a version of amon ra.

I'm pretty sure that is the one that you have installed, as per your screen shot. Just because it doesn't say sbc there doesn't mean it's not sbc. Also, the kernel that your build came packaged with was an sbc kernel already.
Ya i thought that it was but then why do I get negatives after reaching 100% in battery history. I thought sbc was supposed to keep it charging?

Installation Instructions:
Before flashing do a DARKSIDE.SUPER.WIPE
Flash the ROM
Then do a DARKSIDE.CACHE.WIPE before rebooting.
After the first boot, let it sit for a couple minutes.
*The UVLC8 ICS radio is required.*
There are some reports of Touch Recovery causing problems. This is not 100% confirmed, but if you have any problems try non-touch cwm.
This is a base ROM. It is very similar to CM9, which it is based off of. As development continues I expect it to differ significantly. When Samsung releases the source for the T989 I will begin building the ROM, but until then it will be a base ROM.

Notes
To enable USB Storage mode go to: Settings -> Storage -> Menu soft key -> USB Computer Connection
If you experience call echo or a "robot voice" try the following: flash the LC8 radio first, followed by Super wipe, Flash ROM, Re-Flash radio again, Then..flash the darkside cache-wipe and boot up. (Thank you Docmjldds)
Thanks for brewing a new rom, the more the merrier, will give it a shot!

It is a .zip you flash before the ROM, it wipes data, cache, etc, but is better than doing it from the recovery. It's not necessary, I just think it is better.

darkside.cache.wipe.zip is also really cool ia use it all the time. its great it wipes cache, dalvik, and fixes permissions. (clears and fixes junk data, easiest way to discribe it)doesnt touch the emmc, sd, system, or data. id grab it to.

I'm looking forward to trying this one out, I've been looking for a clean, barebones ICS ROM without any fancy theming.
Maybe name it Vanilla-ICS (if the name hasn't been taken already)
So far, pretty good... launcher has crashed once but not a big deal.... I look forward to updating soon...

I have decided to post the wipe scripts here for those KernelHolics & Flashaholics that are flashing kernels and ROMs constantly. I've made small modifications to these scripts FULL credit to the originator of them Credits below.
These are compatible with CWM, TWRP.
Since there have been numerous kernels recently being posted and people wondering what to wipe or what not to wiped here is the Kernel Cleaner.
1. Place the file in the root of your /sdcard
2. Flash Kernel Cleaner
3. Flash/Fastboot Kernel
4. Reboot.
Download: http://d-h.st/lkH
This second script I'm sure everyone is familiar with SUPERWIPE script.
Tired of wiping after every ROM or not knowing what to wipe to flash a ROM and have a clean install? Just flash this script & flash ROM easy right?
1. Place Wipe-Script in root of /sdcard
2. Flash Wipe-Script
3. Flash ROM
4. Reboot.
Download: http://d-h.st/9yt
Debug
If it doesn't flash please tell me what recovery your using.
ONLY works for the NEXUS 10 ONLY will be available for other devices as well.

So I do apologize for asking this, I am currently headed out the door or I would look deeper into this the super wipe would also involve wiping our /0 storage right? All of our titanium backup files, game saves...etc etc?
