[Solved] Clarification needed for Kernel updating please - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just put Leedroids 3.0.0 onto my DHD and now need to flash recommended kernel mdjs_V7_2.6.35.10_OC1900_SLQB_CIFS_TUN_VR.
I have tried flashing it in CWM, flash cwm recovery, reboot into recovery, select zip, install zip. But when i look at the software screen in settings it says kernel version unavailable...
Am I doing this wrong?
Shouldn't it state the kernel details?
Info is appreciated

Can you please confirm you are selecting:
install zip from sdcard -> Choose zip from sdcard
??
If so, reboot device and check again. Could be a corrupt file download so re-download it and if available check the md5 sums.

Sorted, there is a Kernel Info: Unavailable issue as just found out
Yes I confirm that is what i did, thanks for the reply

Sorry, again, clarification required. Are you saying this is a known bug with this kernel?
If so please mark thread as solved.

[Q] Clockwork mod won't flash Rom, won't update

According to ROM Mgr, I have successfully flashed CWM 3.0.0.8 but when I boot into Recovery, it shows 2.5.0.1. Also when I try to flash a new ROM with ROM Mgr, I get error msg saying to check log. The only way I can flash a new ROM is to do the Update.zip thing. Nandroid seems to work ok. What am I doing wrong?
Sometimes you have to flash it twice to get it to take. Dunno why.
hope that helps.
I've tried that several times. ROM Mgr says that 3.0.0.8 has successfully flashed but Recovery says otherwise. Has to be related to the fact that ROM Mgr will not flash any different ROMs. Flashing with Update.zip doesn't give the option to wipe before reflash which worries me a little. How drastic will I have to get to fix this?

depending on what your flashing needs are, you could try to go to rom manager and flash alternate recovery ra_gnm v1.8.1 I have used it and it worked fine for me. not sure if it supports the new scripting for clockwork after 3.0.0.XX. you could also try flashing the alternate recovery and then flash clockwork back right away see if it sticks that way.
I was having the same problem i would flash in RM and when I booted the phone it will still have the 2.5 version of CW.. but Some one here in the forum gave me this file and it work just fine.... dont flash it in recovery just put it your root sdcard and power off and them power on + Vol - and you should have 3.0.8 hope it works....
I have the exact same problem as described above.... I tried the PB31IMG.zip and had no luck any other suggestions ?

I tried this. No luck. I also tried flashing several alternate CWMs. They all show as being successfully flashed in RM, but when I boot to recovery, 2.5.0.1 still prevails. ???????

The OP contains lots of advice for getting 3.0.0.8 installed and working properly.
Perhaps most importantly, make sure "Erase recovery" is checked in Rom Manager settings.

When flashing in hoot your SD card has to be formatted fat32 or it won't work..... check and see if your formatted correctly..... if not back up your files on your pc then reformat and it should work
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Don't know whether you solved your problem in the last 30 days, but my suggestion is DON'T USE ROM MANAGER TO UPDATE CLOCKWORK.
I downloaded the most recent CWM from Doug Piston's site, renamed it to PB31IMG.zip and put it in the root directory of my SD card, booted into Bootloader, when it recognized the update file, I ran the update and got to 3.0.0.8.
Meanwhile, ROM Manager still reports that I have an earlier version of CWM, and I've even gone so far as to update the .settings file to correct it, but ROM Manager blithely goes about its business ignorant of the real recovery.
Since my ROM isn't supported by ROM Manager, I figure I can just leave ROM Manager alone ---- I've never trusted backups run through it anyway; I always run Nandroids from Recovery.

Stuck on unrevoked "rebooting into recovery"

My DINC is latest Gingerbread 2.3.4.
I'm trying to get rid of the awful 'low memory' problems that I'm having on a daily basis.
I'm following this XDA guide
[HOW TO] Fix the "Low on space" problem (in plain English)
The PC drivers got installed fine.
But when I run unrevoked 3.22 it gets stuck on 'Rebooting into recovery'. At that point the phone shows the screen: ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 (the screen has 9 selectable options in blue text). I can select the first option 'reboot system now' and the phone seems untouched. I've tried it a few times but keep running into the same problem.
Any ideas??
If you're in Recovery (oh that sounds so rude lol) press the optical button to select options. The power button functions as the back button while in recovery.

Trying to be delicate you're done! you now can download this file from androidsu (removed for it being junk) and then put it on to your SD card and flash it by going to install zip from SD and then find this file and say yes to flash. It will flash the superuser binary and the application effectively rooting your phone. you may also want to flash the s-off tool from unrevoked called unrevoked forever from here to give you the ability to flash alternate radios or splash screens or whatever you decide to!

I hope this helps!

I'm done? Sorry but I'm a bit confused - The instructions say in the last step:
-Once it's done, unplug your phone and ensure that a "Superuser Permissions" application is inside your app drawer.
Shouldn't I be seeing a new app named 'superuser permissions'? Since there's no app with that name I assumed unrevoked did not complete it's process.
Can I somehow verify that unrevoked was successful?
The fact that it has flashed clockwork is success enough, I know you want to be thorough but I have done this with my own phone as well as a friend's with perfect success of rooting the phone. My Inc now runs ics with perfect ease after completing the process you have. And trust me, the hardest part is behind you. If you download the files I cited above then you will flash them both using your new recovery then you will be set to do endless nods to your phone. My advice though before flashing anything to your phone is to check the Md5 carefully to male sure you don't flash corrupted files to your phone

u can verify by going to google play and download root checker or download whatever app that need root to function.
as for superuser app, sometimes that app just didn't show, in order for it to show is you have to manually flash it in clockworkmod recovery, just like nschiwy say. its actually fine to do that so don't be worried , as a precaution cek the MD5 to make sure you dont flash a bad zip file.

For some reason your md5 number doesn't match with the md5 I downloaded of either the 3.1.3 zip mentioned in this thread, or the 3.0.7 zip you mention.
Can you provide a link to the md5 info?

I have a bad situation here - my DINC is now stuck rebooting over and over into the white startup screen.
Here's what I did -
I copied to my SD card the 3.1.3 zip file that nschiwy linked in his post. Then I did this:
6.) Power down, then go back to hboot. Use the volume keys to select "Recovery", press power button to select and enter Clockwork. Now select "Install zip from SD card", then "Choose zip from SD card", then navigate to the Superuser zip you placed on the card in step 3. Select and load it. (NOTE: For those that don't typically load zips directly in CWM, use the trackpad button to make selections in CWM, the power button brings you back one menu.)
All this went fine. I used the Recovery command 'power off'. But then when I powered up it now is stuck in reboot. I did flash again from the zip file on the SD card, but same problem.
I see the troubleshooting tips posted here (I will copy it below). Pulling the battery didn't help. And I can't seem to reflash from the unrevoked app because my DINC just keeps boot-cycling...
What shoudl I do??
My phone keeps rebooting over and over and I can't do anything!
Pull out the battery, wait for 15 seconds, and put it back in and turn the phone back on. If it still keeps rebooting, pull out/re-insert the battery again, go into hboot (see above answer) and try the following steps. You can stop as soon as one of them works!
1. Restore a backup that you made in a previous step (if you have one).
2. Reflash the .img file from Step #8.
3. Flash the .img file here: http://dinc.does-it.net/wildstang83_...2_11232011.zip (note: this one will take you back to stock, so you'll have to start the guide over).

as far as my understanding of those words, i think its like this :
1. skip cause u dont have 1
2. reflash clockwordmod but since ur phone keep bootloop, i think u gotta flash it in HBOOT.
3. reflash rom by going into clockworkmod recovery and install zip from sdcard.
again cmiiw.
btw can u go to clockworkmod recovery via recovery in HBOOT menu? if u can i think u can skip no 1 and 2 and just go install zip from sdcard in clockworkmod recovery menu.
but idk if its save to do that.

if u can go to clockworkmod recovery menu, just go to mounts and storage and then mount USB storage plug the cable and voila it will detect ur sdcard.

JB-MR1 Help!

Hi all, I was on AKOP's milestone ROM before trying to flash their newest one. I did not do anything to the kernel or anything by the way.
I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.2.7 and I rebooted into recovery and flashed super dark side wipe and then JB-MR1 and then gapps.
I went through the entire start up process with inputting your information and then finally I got into the actual home screen. I clicked around to see how the UI looked and then decided to reboot through the menu.
It was in the rebooting animation icon for at least 30 min before I decided to pull the battery. I want to wipe and start again but my cwm recovery isn't installing anything.
EDIT: The phone still works as I can boot into the phone and use it. I'm trying to reboot now: power button hold>reboot, but its taking ages still...need help on this reboot thanks
Any help here?
EDIT 2: Pretty much phone is "functional" but any method of trying to reboot or reboot into recovery fails
Thanks all!
Check the Md5 hash to make sure it is a good download.
Otherwise it sounds like it is CWM that can be causing issues.
Which version of gapps are you flashing?

Checked the Md5 with an app and it matches up perfectly with akop's main website.
I'm running 6.0.2.8 cwm. Is it even possible that its cwm? I used the same version to flash AKOPs new ROM.
and im flashing gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
Does it have anything to do with my kernel?
You aren't supposed to use super wipe with cwm 6. That is probably your problem.

Thanks so much for pinpointing the problem! Is there a fix to this?
And is this the recommended method of flashing? (Taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926754):
1. Wipe factory data/reset
2. Wipe cache
3. Go into mounts and storage
4. Format /system
5. Format /data
6. Format /cache
7. Enter advanced
8. Wipe dalvik
9. Flash ROM then gapps
10. Reboot and let the ROM settle for 5-10 minutes if flashing TW ROMs, this step is unnecessary for AOSP based ROMs.
11. (Optional) if flashing a new radio flash AFTER the ROM has been initially booted for the first time. No wipes are necessary when flashing a new radio but it HAS to be flashed after the ROM is loaded and settled in. Flashing a radio first and then a ROM has caused issues like the phone not even recognizing there is a network for it. ( phone remains in emergency mode )
Edit:
Pretty sure my phone is bricked now... in a continuous boot up loop... BUT i can still access recovery

Yes, those are the proper flashing instructions for CWM6.
It sounds like you have a soft brick. I think your best bet is to Odin back to stock. Have a look here:

2. If i cant boot into my phone to get to my SD card, how do i download and put files onto my phone?

Stock kernel is just fine.
Odin will flash the stock OS to your phone from the computer. Make sure to read the Odin directions a few times before trying it because it could hard brick if something goes wrong.

I'm trying to read through the thread you gave me but its kinda cluttered and its hard finding exactly where to start...pointers?
From the first post of that thread you will need
1. The prerequisites
-Odin
-Drivers
-Kies(dunno if this is mandatory but I guess it couldn't hurt.)
2. T-Mobile t989 uvlhi stock ROM(Odin)
You will need some type of zip software to extract the files from this.
3. Follow the steps under Installation - Odin installation(skip step 1)
After you get the stock ROM running you can install custom recovery and then flash your custom ROMs.

I did a full wipe before trying to install. Cleared cache etc. The rom I really want to install is Dr Ketan's. I don't understand how/what you mean by checking the md5??

I tried and tried and tried but couldn't get it to install. I then decied to reflash back to 4.1.2 stock via odin. Then tried to install Dr's again but still wouldn't work. I then flashed the leaked 4.3 via odin and repeated the Dr's install and it worked!!!!!!.
Thanks for the advice.

[Q] Xperia S: from unlock bootloader to recovery to flashing ROM on MAC

Hi.
I'm trying to unlock my bootloader on Xperia S in order to flash CM11 ROM.
I followed this website: unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions and I'm stuck at #9.
Download and unzip this file. This is the standard android_winusb.inf-file, with a few lines of code added to enable Fastboot to support Sony and Sony Ericsson devices. Make sure you are running Google USB Driver package revision 4 or higher in your Android SDK. You can see current Google USB Driver package revision in the SDK Manager.

As I'm using MAC, I don't have Google USB Driver and website doesn't mention anything for MAC users.
I can't fastboot my phone. :crying:
Please help.
Thanks.

Yes, I managed to download android SDK and everything except the Google USB Driver, because it doesn't exist on MAC.
Anyway, I managed to solve my own problem using a FlashTool here: flashtool.net/download.php
Now my problem is solved. The bootloader is finally unlocked!! :victory:
My next problem: I would like to flash CM11 KitKat. Is there a step-by-step guide?
I found some threads in the development section on what to download etc etc, but it doesn't tell me how to install or run it.
I'm an absolute noob at this.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm afraid that's a bit too advanced for me. Do you have a link to a step-by-step guide (preferably for MAC)?
Do I still need to install a recovery, since my phone data is already gone while unlocking the bootloader?
How do I flash the ROM on Xperia S? Is there a guide for this?
edit: I wanted to install this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2555243 but I don't know how. I downloaded the .zip file. What's next?

Thanks again for your reply. Please bear with me. I'm done with recovery using the RecoveryX Tool, and I managed to root my phone!! Yay!! :good:
Now, how do I flash the .zip file that I downloaded here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2555243
Do I use the FlashTool to flash this .zip?
another problem, I can't get into the recovery mode.
I tried rebooting the phone while pressing the volume button, also tried pressing the back key, and tried tapping the screen. Didn't work.
edit: I've read many sources that say wait until purple LED light blinks or wait until android logo shows etc etc, but my phone doesn't show any LED blinks at startup, nor does it have any android logo. Only the words Xperia and Sony appear.

Try reinstalling the recovery, don't know I would recommend you to use doomlord's guides bro U can't fail
To flash the rom, go to recovery / install zip/ install zip from sdcard0 , select and flash it , don't forget to do a factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache which is in advanced option in recovery

Mate, I'm stuck. For recovery, I refer to DoomLord http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594828 and he said,
The recovery in integrated into the kernel! so when u flash the kernel it will contain the recovery!

so a kernal is needed. I think he directed the downloads to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557452
which he said,
[ how to install my kernel ] (v02 onwards) {NEW}
1. download the kernel package update.zip (it contain the updated wifi modules)
2. save the package update.zip to sdcard (on phone)
3. reboot phone and enter recovery
4. flash the kernel package update.zip
5. reboot phone and enjoy the kernel

Step 3 says enter recovery. How do I enter recovery? Just paste the .zip file into the SDcard and it will work??

You can't enter to recovery if you don't have one whoa, You need to install the kernel which contains the recovery via fastboot(you need fasboot binaries you can find them in Sdk/platform-tools). Give me your hangouts if you need more help
I managed to flash the kernel using the FlashTool, managed to get CM11 KitKat on my phone!! Yay! First time ever!! :good::good:
How do I restore the data I had before? I can't find the backup app.
