Can you increasing boot animation play time? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know you are probably wondering why would someone want to increase the amount of time it takes to boot up their Epic. This is not the case, I simply want to increase the amount of time given before the lock screen appears for the boot animation to continue playing. When my phone stops playing the boot animation and goes to the lock screen it is still not completely up and running. So I'd rather watch the boot screen animation continue to run rather then go to the lock screen where when I unlock it still shows widgets loading and such.
Thanks for help.

Even if it wad possible the phone doesn't start doing the media scan until the screen comes on. I know its slow but if u have a lot of stuff on your sd card that doesn't need scanned at first put a .nomedia in the folder and it will scan faster.

and the .nomedia file is just a text file with that name correct?

It's just a file named .nomedia with anything you don't want scanned inside of it.

Tried the .nomedia, did not seem to make any noticable difference. Did find a nice app on the Market called StudioKUMA .nomedia Manager which easily adds .nomedia files to any folder you want. Even went to excess and tagged everything on my sdcard with .nomedia, then had fun undoing that and resetting my ringtones and notification tones.
Now I'm just gonna try going with a new ROM since I'm ready for something new so I'll just clear and start fresh again.

[BUG] about the USB / SD card storage and Media Scan

For some times now i've been trying to single out an app that was causing the random crashes, or hot reboot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336896
the problem seems to cause the whole front end of the OS crash and restart itself reloading every single app as if you had rebooted the phone, but there was no reboot involved.
in the end i noticed everytime i was messing around with the mount SD cards as USB storage, and right after is when it happens the most, as well as when i swap one SD card with another SD card
everytime something related to SD card happens the annoying Media Scan will run, and because i have TONS of files, it takes a very long time to finish scanning, so if something needs access to those files, it causes the whole system to crash and reload (not reboot), and then because it crashed, it starts the media scanning process again, and if you have many widgets that request files from the SD card then well.. you get the point, it kinda goes into an endless loop
END TASKING everything sort of helps, but it's not a real solution.
can some one remind me where or which system service i can freeze or remove to kill the Media Scanner?
thanks
PS: this sort of reminds me of the old bug on SGS1 when the Media Scanner runs out of memory when your library collection is too huge for it to process
Yes the only slowdown/crash I had (just once) with this phone was while media scan was running and I was trying to access Sd card for file copy. It does run every single time you do something on SD card which is annoying.
But would it cause more problems if stopped from running?
Hi AllGamer,
Have you figured out how to stop the media scanner?

i have a good idea how, but i need time to dig out that information from the old i9000 section, and i'm very short in time with all the soap opera going on
The below is long winded, but I believe in giving as much detail as possible, as well as it's still an ongoing process for me where I believe I've resolved the problem, yet I keep forcing it accidentally and not yet exactly pinned down my issue entirely.
I just got this phone, set it up, and was running into a similar issue where media scanning would initiate and continually initiate over and over while reloading dash and not loading all widgets. My actions the other night prior to this happening were making a backup in clockwork mod, installing setcpu, setting up setcpu, copying media files from old SD card from previous phone into new external and internal SD cardm then restarting the following morning after waking up. This baffeled me, and through google searching I came upon your threads, I saw ICE Music 4.0x or IM+ apps where your issues, however I have neither app.
Traced my steps back thinking what I did before sleeping and after backing up. I started deleting media files (pictures, movies, music) off the SD cards. After rebooting, this did not resolve my issue. I then rememebered I did SetCPU. I was able to successfully uninstall the app from my phone by dragging it to the trashcan before media scanning restarted. I rebooted, however, this still did not resolve my issue. I restored my backup prior to all this since my issue was unresolved through these means, and media scanning was fine. I've not been using SetCPU the past day and everything is fine.
My analysis is that using SetCPU is fine, I was using it the other night after backup, but prior to rebooting phone, however if SetCPU is set to run on boot, then Media scanning goes all fubar. Even if you uninstall SetCPU app through the android menus or dumping to the trashcan, something still seems resident in the booting process or initially something is modified that does not become unmodified. I've yet to try manually loading and running SetCPU each instance after bootup without having setcpu set to start on boot.
Hmm maybe I spoke too soon. Since that time, I've restored approximately 10k sms messages with SMS+ Backup app, sent a sms in handcent, backed up sms with SMS+ Backup, believe I received a sms, updated AdAway app, and started/updated AdFree app, and however I don't see it now.
Now, the adfree app gave me a menu I had no recolection of on my Nexus One, where I had two options. One option I don't rememeber, but the other "Boot Normally", I remember and chose. SetCPU is not installed at this moment, and after doing just those couple things from the 1st sentence, I rebooted. I noticed that the display at the bottom would show Adfree granted superuser permissions, and then I would get a freeze and reboot of the dash. I may have setup Adfree the night before along with SetCPU (It was late and I had been up 24hrs the previous night). I've frozen AdFree with Titanium Backup and removed it from superuser permissions, but I'm still media scanning crashing again. Unsure if the boot normally option in Adfree modified something in the booting code. I'm going to try restoring with Clockwork Mod again, then do my sms restore, and see if that narrows the issue down. If it appears finem then I'm assuming it has something to do with apps that modify boot coding like SetCPU or AdFree, if they actually modify it that is. I'm not good at coding. I'm at work, unable to do much playing around, however, I hope some of this is of assistance with resolving this issue.
Got a chance to test it. My issue with media scanning appears to be too many sms messages saved. after restoring about 10k in sms's, it just media scan loops.

my apps folder keeps randomly rearranging after 4.0.4

does anyone else have same issue and how do I fix it. tried doing a cache wipe and deleting folder and reinstalling it. it's the folder on the dock.
I tried switching location of the folder on the doc, but it still does it. it's driving me crazy. I really don't want to do reboot. I have another folder with contacts in the Dock and it's fine.
so i bought a new phone from google since something happened to my last phone. thought i would not have to deal with this any more since it's a brand new phone. nope. new phone, same problem. it has to be a software bug. am i the only one that has an app folder in the doc and that's having this. this is a second phone now with a clean software.
i'm also suspecting that this happens when one of the apps in the folder does auto update. i've already turned it off for the downloaded apps, but can't for the some of the stock apps. after i did this, it still re-arranged. i'm going to try to take out one app at a time to see if i can narrow it down. this is so f'n annoying.
I also have this exact problem. I have no idea why it happens but it is annoying. Hope someone will find a fix for this.
Phone model: ICS 4.0.4 IMM76I
i've figured out what's causing it. basically, i set up one folder with all the apps already in the order that i want and one where i just put the same apps in it and then arranged it. so the folder that was arranged from the beginning by the order of apps added stays the same. the folder that i moved apps around, keeps re-arranging. the same thing happened with the direct dial folder as soon as i removed one person and then re-added it. just that one icon keeps re-arranging. so basically, i set up a new folder by adding the apps in the exact order that i want them in and then added it to the doc. the folder stays as is. the folder that i re-arranged icons, both in doc and in home screen keeps changing. it's still stupid that i have to go through this much trouble, but at least it doesn't shift any more.

[Q] when restarting

I noticed a couple of things upon restart. Do you guys know what it is and why it happens?
1) when im restarting my phone, i realize a quick message appears before it boots. That says "No memory card. phone photo, image, audio, video, album and moments features disabled" (i have one), is this normal? Some times it say no valid card too (I think its referring to SIM). Is this normal? Why does it do that?
2) Also one time when I rebooted, I noticed the widgets on my homescreen was a loaded weird. The spacing and text was not showing up properly, the size of widget looked compressed (weather and news app). What can cause this?
Thanks

What ROM are you running? What Launcher? What mods have you done? We need more info if we are to help.
Stock and rooted
Downloaded goo manager
Ti bu
Andromizer
Set cpu
Rom tool box
Cpu spy
Tasker
System tuner pro
Busy box
Better battery stat
Adbd I secure
Sd maid
Triangle away
Root explorer and other file explorers
Referring to the widget loading - Is this consistent every time? Or does it seem random?
The internal memory card not loading is a hardware problem for sure or having a very slow boot where your system boots before your card is recognized (maybe messed up page/indexing). Never seen something like that. Be careful and back up your data now. If it persists take it to your carrier
@tg only happened once
@zet not sure if it makes a diff but it's during the power off seg ment that the message flashes up. Does it happen to Ursula when u restart?

IndexService battery massacre

I took screenshots to better explain. My battery has been having an awful drain in very brief periods of time; sometimes without hardly any use. Culprit shows as IndexService which I have 0 experience with so I wanted to reach out for thoughts and assistance. Thank you for any help!
If i remember correctly this has to do with files like on a Sdcard or regular storage. First thing I would try and narrow which it is. One option is remove sdcard and see what happens. If its still doing it then its internal storage. If it stops then its sdcard.. In this case you can remove junk files from sdcard or make a .nomedia (with period) file to empty directories) and also another option is using the period before the directory (like .music) just know several file managers/apps then won't be able to see the directory as it makes it invisible. So you will need to find one that will.
Thank you so much! Will start testing. Any recommendations on file managers? I use ES and FX
I use fx plus with root and its great. I also see hidden files.
I know someone that had this exact issue. She ended up sending her phone back because there were Bluetooth issues as well. If the above doesn't work I would recommend freezing the process, there's a thread on how to do that without root in the general section.

[Q] How to get hidden pictures off from stock rom.

So my buddy still has his Galaxy S3 and yesterday things took a turn for the worst and now the display is destroyed. He says it just shows green but it still plays sounds and vibrates when he gets a call or any notifications. So he wants to get his pictures off of his phone but he said he hid a few of them by creating a new album, placing the pictures in the album, and pressing the hide button. Where would these pictures be stored at and is there anyway to make them viewable again? I don't have the phone with me right now and he can't give it to me because we live fairly far away so I just have to tell him what to do even though he is not very tech savvy.

Plug it into a computer with USB, and hope he had it set to MTP or PTP and not fast charge because with a busted screen I can't think of any way to change that setting.
Open up a file explorer on the computer and start looking around for the pictures and copy them from the damaged phone to the computer when you find them. I don't know exactly where the pictures will be located, but if the phone was on Jellybean or above it is a pretty safe bet they'll be in a subfolder of /data/media/0. /data/media/0/DCIM is where all the funny cat pictures he took himself will be. /data/media/0/Pictures or /data/media/0/NameOfAppTheyCameFrom could be some other likely candidates for where those files got saved. Just poke around, unless he had a tremendous number of apps installed there should be all that many directories to look through.
I don't think the fact that he hid them with a gallery app will keep them from showing up in a PC file explorer. Hiding them with gallery probably just dropped a .nomedia file in the folder so media scanner skips them or something else along those lines that won't actually hide them from a file manager; unless he did something a little more stealthy/techie to keep them hidden.

That wouldn't work, his phone is not rooted nor does it have USB debugging enabled.
