Is there an easy way to do it or a step by step guide that is accurate?

If you're talking about the one from htc, you may want to consider what you will lose:
* no S-off
* need to downgrade to get root back
* messaging and other apps "improved" (I was getting lots of complaints from my wife about this.)
The instructions on htc's site are pretty complete, they just need the "wait 10-15 min after the new os boots the 1st time for it to be usable."

So I am fairly new to this whole linux/android thing. I got my Evo a while back and I really want to use some of the apps and custom roms posted here. I did the OTA update and found out that I can only root using the new flash exploit so I went ahead and did some research and found OTA simple root that got root axx using the flash exploit. I followed the steps to a T but was unsuccessful after various attempts. I installed HTC sync as well as the new DotNet framework. I complete all the steps successfully and get the to the point of the skating androids but after using a few apps they all claims they cannot access root. I'm really confused as to what is going on. I'm not a computer noob - I have worked at IT for a few years and know my way around windows and computer software/hardware in general.
Right now my phone information goes as follows:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Basband version: 1.36.00.04.02
Kernal version: 2.6.29-ac94cf60
If there is anymore information I need to post go ahead and let me know. I just can't seem to access root and I followed all of the items listed on the program and followed the video on the website - though there were no words just techno music and a visual guide. Let me know if anyone knows whatsup :\ I don't get any errors or anything so I am confused as to what I should do.
There is 1 weird thing that happens, however. At the beginning, the first prompt that transfers all the files shows 0 bytes transferring and shows the amount in the speeds - I doubt this is anything weird because it eventually DOES transfer but I figured I would throw that out there. Infinite props and possible unique torrent privileges to anyone who helps me
Unrevoked 3, have u teied that?

The version of simpleroot you did is for 1.47
I think you have 1.32
Use the earlier simpleroot designed for 1.32
Whoops. This is a month old thread. I imagine the OP does not care, anymore
I just recieved my new EVO today from sprint. (my other one had a dead pixel) I have done no updates to it, just turned it on. I have just tried the Simple Root and it fails because i have Software Number 1.47.651.1 and i guess i need the older one. But the phone came with it. Im currently on Stock 2.1. Can i still fully root somehow????
Just wait and try to be patient. You're not the only person in that situation. A fix will, no doubt, be on it's way eventually.
And don't be in a rush to try other things that aren't made for the release you have. You might end up like some other people and really mess up the phone by being impatient.
Wait, isn't Simple Root made for 1.47? And can't you root 1.47 manually anyway using toast's guides?
Huh, i just rooted one with that build. Did u get the 1 click simple root program for that build? I still use the 4 step one for the evos i root.

I thought i traveled back in time there for a sec lol. There is a new simpleroot. I bet he is using the old 3 step for 1. 32
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah either the one step simpleroot or on the wikwi guide page use "simplest root method without a user gui" all work fine with 1.47

Im not sure if it was for 1.32 but yes it it was the 3 step simple root. Maybe thats why it didnt work Could you maybe show me the link to the one you are talking about please?? Thanks much
1.47 is the easiest to root. You are not on the "new software number". Don't freak out....
Use simple root for 1.47, search for it... It is easy to use, after that you can flash any rom through recovery.
I rooted my wife dinc but she didn't like it so I went ahead and put her stock rom back on. She is receiving the Nov. Update regularly and wants it but doesn't want to wipe the phone. My question is..of I turn s back on will it allow the update ? If not... is there a way to unroot without wiping? Please...I need the nagging to stop lol . Thanks for the help.

...
If you search the threads in here you'll see one way to stop the nagging is to modify a system file (changing some text). But you'll have to use root explorer to make the modification because it has to be done with root access. I've done it and it works... I just don't remember where the file is at off the top of my head.
Go here. Read all the instructions and warnings.
I updated two DINCs yesterday. They were rooted, s-off, stock Froyo.
I followed the instructions (imagine that!), applied the Nov OTA update, re-rooted, and re-installed SU.
Nothing was wiped from the phone. Probably because it is an update. A patch. Not a new version of the OS.
Same as Ed. Just finished today cause i was getting annoyed with the update asking to install all the time. There is no wipe as it is a simple update.
Ok so if I follow those directions it will unroot the phone?

One problem. I don't know how to use adb. I could never get it to work on my comp . Any other alternatives ?

Hmmm... My post says to read the instructions which includes re-rooting the phone. The instructions also mention the step to take to re-root. the phone.
If the instructions tell you how to re-root, then, yes, the logical conclusion is that your phone will get un-rooted by the update.
But if you actually follow the instructions, that one simple step will re-root your phone.

adb is needed only if you have removed the "crapware", because you need to re-install it before running the update.
I FOLLOWED the instructions. Updated and re-rooted two stock Froyo, rooted phones. And did not use adb. I don't have it installed either.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
Steps 10 a c and I I'm not too sure what that means ed . Can u clarify a bit
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Step 10 is a list of things you see/do as the OTA update runs.
a. through f. lists things that you see on the screen. Just sit and watch...
g. tells you to wait 30 seconds. So you wait 30 seconds.
It then tells you to unlock the screen. So you unlock the screen.
It then tells you to skip the keyboard tutorial. So you tap the "SKIP" button.
h. tells you what you will see next
i. you only need to do if you run WiFi and it doesn't connect. That is, if you normally have WiFi running and it fails to connect at this point, turn it off then turn it on. It should then connect. I don't run WiFi on my phone. I mean, what's the point in that?
j. tells you how you can check in Settings to see that the update has run.
If you would have read Step 11 yesterday afternoon, you would not have had to ask if this process unroots the phone.
Please. Relax. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Then, if you want to apply the update, follow the instructions.
I've read it, just some other questiond. Will it push the stock recovery back on ? Will it allow other updates in the future by doing so? And all my wifes set ups , sync and other stuff she did to personalize will not be wiped by doing so, correct ? (Just clarifying so I can do this with confidence for her)
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Because usually with the keyboard tutoriAL comes wiping of the system. That's y I ask one more time

We lost no data. I did not lose any messages or email. All my settings were retained. Did not have to restore any apps or anything.
That being said, I do not know what all you have set up on your wife's phone so I cannot, from this great a distance tell you that EVERYTHING will be left intact.
Your best bet would be to take backups before proceding with any updates. Just makes plain sense.

Steps 13 through 15 put the ClockworkMod recovery back on the phone.
With the non-standard recovery there, future updates will be blocked as well.
Look, at this point, I would highly recommend some reading into just what rooting is, what it does, its implications, the effects of s-on/s-off (and why you would want it one way or the other) before you procede any further.
As I stated earlier, the instructions are for a DINC that is rooted, s-off, running stock Froyo. And they guide you through applying the update, re-rooting, and re-installing SU.
I am beginning to think that this is not what you are looking to do.
She just has colors for handcent re syncing Facebook. I just don't need to hear it from her cuz when I rooted it for her she didn't like the fact that she had to re do all that . I know what rooting and all that is. Just in rooting I don't want her to have to redo the syncing for Facebook and reset the colors for handcent . Thanks for the help though

You don't really need s-on for anything. Unless you want to remove all traces of being rooted.
For that, I would suggest you look through the threads here that deal with rooting and s-on/s-off.
so im pretty confused and i want to make sure i don't screw this thing up. i've tried using all the newest rom builds and everything works perfect except for my mobile web and tethering
i rooted my g2 from some tutorial from the web which i believe uses visionary. in case anyone wants to see what i did - hxxp://g2hacks.com/g2-hacks/how-to-root-g2-phone (not affiliated). in my defense i didn't know anything about xda..
i'm actually pretty confused and i fear i may need to unroot and reroot since i don't recall using rage and that seems to be THE method. like i said, everything seems to be working ok including making/receiving phone calls, just not the mobile web.
I guess my questions are this:
1. any idea why my mobile web doesn't work?
2. should i unroot and reroot using the newer rage method regardless of the answer to #2 (is it necessary?)
thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Okay well I never used rage I used the very 1st method of rooting and s-off. I had that issue with some roms but it was data/singnal lost. If flashing a new rom won't fix it I think you
Should flash PC10IMG that will restore you to stock rom that came with the phone. The thread is called remove prem root. Hopefully it will fix it. Sorry if am not to much of a help.

just wanted to update real quick. i just learned what APN means (Access Point Name) and it fixed my problem.
* Settings>Wireless Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names *
i was using a simple mobile sim and it defaults to tmobile. i changed to 'simple' and it worked right away.
Aha I see lol glad you fixed it

Having only rooted my old MyTouch 3G via Universal Androot, I'm still somewhat of a noob with all this. I plan to follow the G2 "Easy Root" guide found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
It all seems pretty straightforward. I'm wondering if there is a way to do a backup before attempting this root in case something goes wrong as I'm pretty sure something such as Clockworkmod will not work until root access is gained. Or just man up and go? Also are there reccomendations on which ROM to install? I'm thinking CM6, as its the latest stable release. My biggest concerns are Wi-Fi calling and GPS. Especially the first one. I completely depend on wi-fi calling as I get NO T-mobile signal at home, so if it is known to be spotty on CM6 or 7, I'd like to know before I take the plunge. Thanks in advance!
I find the rage/gfree method on the Wiki page a lot more straightforward. People say that method results in the least bricked devices so take it for what its worth. it did not involve visionary
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
From what I have gathered over several weeks, Visionary is cool for temproot, but very risky to attempt permroot. The method I follow does not utilize Visionary at all for the permroot part. That is left to Gfree. Visionary is wiped out after perm root is complete. I'm just trying to tie up a few loose ends before I attempt the root process. You only get one chance! (Or so I hear....)
Yes you need root before you can make a backup so man up and go! Really though why would you want to back anything up at this point? If your worried about some apps or app data then just get titanium backup and back up data after a temp root. (I think that will work)
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Yeah I realized that when I thought about it. But I WILL still have wi-fi calling available if I flash something like CM6 right? That feature is pretty much why I got the G2 in the first place.
Check each roms log to see if they got it working. I know I used it on virtuous if you like sense roms. I can't speak to any other roms.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I am only really familiar with CM ROMS, though I have heard some good things about Virtuous. Where would I find their ROMS?
