I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know

Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.

Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.
I may not be a code guru but I can not get a root on the HTC EVO to save my life.
The only method I have not tried is the one that is a two part deal. That method
is far beyond my exp.
The pc36img.zip or what it is named does not install/root anything, I get the
"Main version is older!" deal.
Also the flash exploit is not working for me, what do I do?
I enjoyed all of the rooting fun on my palm pre, then again to me it was much
eaiser with the tool set I had.
I am deeply fustrated with the frame cap and all the garbage sprint applications.
Can SOMEONE please help me,

Guys...pm me with your gtalk. I'll help you through it.
I am having the same issue, "main version is older", I tried toasts part 2 because i am showing 0.79 and Ive done plenty of custom roms and modding on the windows platform I am struggling as well. I have the 1.47 version shipped from sprint.
then you need to do the simple root ota edition for 1.47 if you are trying to root. One moment while I dig up the link

Yep, toast 1 and 2 wont work with 1.47 simpleroot is the answer, read that thread carefully as many issues that can pop up are answered there.

hi, guys. i just got my evo on august 6th. i tried using neckface's root method but got the message 'main version is older - failed'. can i still root my evo?
these are where mine stands now:
firmware version - 2.1-update1
build - 1.47.651
software - 1.47.651.1
pri - 1.40-003
i'm a linux user and comfortable with the command line so i'm happy to use any method you guys suggest and i'll even be happy to get my feet wet with adb.
please let me know if there's any way to root my phone.
thanks.
This is a question, therefore it belongs in the Q&A section.
i'm sorry. i'll move it right now.
It does belong in a different section, but to answer it, you can use Simpleroot (found in this forum) to root a .1 phone.
There are many ways to root your phone. Simple root will work as well as doing toast 1 and 2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
This can give you some directions. Also most of the main guys that develop on the Evo are on #htc-evo freenode.net chat room.
Yep. But Simpleroot's the easiest way for a new user, which is why it's the only one I mentioned.
Before we shove the guy over to Q&A, maybe his phone could be used to extract the PRI 1.40. Especially since the Op has Linux knowledge.

i'd be happy to help any way i can. let me know what i can do.
I have the same specs as the first post.
Just my PRI is 2.33_003
I am also using windows 7
I am comfortable using DOS and all that.
I just never have rooted a phone before, but this is a phone i bought that was flashed to work with boost mobile.
When I hold down the power and down button it shows S-OFF HBOOT 2.10.0001
Thing is....when i install titanium back up or wireless tether....it says i am not rooted.
from what i know revolutionary won't work with my hboot version and simple root is next to impossible to find now since all the links are broken to download the needed files.
I just recently bought a G2 and updated its software...But I'm clueless where to start/how to root the phone. I looked through some stickies, but I got lost right away. Can anyone help or show me something a lot easier to follow? Thanks
Word to the wise, if the rooting process seemed too hard to do do not do it and stay stock, lot less risk of your phone bricking.

What software did you upgrade? You may have to downgrade to root, pay attention to software versions.

Just follow the steps on the wiki like a member said. I had no experience whatsoever but managed to learn a little adb and successfully rooted my phone. Use the rage gfree method. It is simple with the least chance of bricking

The Wiki guide is right here, if you haven't found it yet:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Just read up as much as you can before you start, and follow the instruction very carefully, and you will be fine.
The Gingerbread (Android 2.3) OTA that is currenlty being deployed is not currently rootable (and requires downgrading first to root), but you should be okay since you are still on the T-Mobile 2.2 ROM still.
What about doing this on Macs?

Could someone post the Windows USB Drivers for the Vision?
The link is dead, and i couldn't find anything after I searched for it.
Can somebody also post T-Mobile G2 and HTC Desire Z: recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img (md5sum cbc776e7941ebf030e9fa39473d5b6f1)

Will this method work after doing a temp root? It seems a lot easier
As far as the usb drivers go, I used pda.net from the market. If after you install pda.net it still sees your phone as usb mass storage only, then unplug your phone, remove the current driver and plug it back in. It should ask you if you want to set up your new hardware and show it as an android device

NO. And yes. Confused? Here is a link to the method myself and many others have used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This is an "easy" method using Visionary to temp root ONLY and then G-free for perm root. Do not be tempted to check "perm-root now" on Visionary since there is a high brick risk. Anyhow, this method runs scripts so much less chance for typo errors... just follow the simple directions to the letter and you will be rooted in no time. Works like a dream.
That was easy! hah, this was a lot easier than what the wiki told me to do. Thank you so much
edit:i restored to my back up (phew ), but why does the CM screen keep on repeating after I try installing 7.03?
i rooted everything fine, but after installing CM 7, the boot logo keeps on repeating, and the home screen won't pop up. is there a fix for this? :/
No prob.
Did you do a full wipe before flashing CM7? Even if you did, I'd recommend a "Superwipe". This is a zip you flash from recovery like anything else, and it really gets to everything on your phone's memory. I don't have the direct link but you can download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991254
It's down the page a bit, in the "attached files". The one on the top called SuperWipeG2+. Also, the ROM on that page is a nice one if you're looking for stuff other than CM. (Though CM is a good place to start)
I didn't do a complete wipe, I just did something else instead. I figured it out before checking this up, but thank you a lot for the help. +Thanks
I am not new to rooting but am new to rooting htc phones and the evo 4g. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as to where I could find the most up to date information/instructions on rooting my new evo 4g. I have been searching forums and google for 2 days now and am being overwhelmed with information. My specs are as follows:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.9
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.17-gee557fd htc-kernel!and18-2#15 (stock)
Build Number: 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release-keys
Software Version: 3.70.651.1
Basically, everything is stock as of 7/2/11. If any other info is needed (don't think there is) please let me know. Thank you in advance for any and all help!
Read this thread.

Use unrevoked, and be sure you DON'T accept any update prompts. The newer version can't be rooted, but they software version you're on can.
For begginers u should try out this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
It super easy but i rooted with unrevoked.
and be sure DON'T UPDATE TO GINGERBREAD

The unrevoked site will not allow me to download the recovery. It keeps telling me "403 - forbidden." This was the method I wanted to use b/c of what looks like ease of use. Any mirrors or links that I could use that would work with my above specs? TY once again and forgive my noobness (don't want to brick my phone and want do this right the first time).

Having trouble with that link as well. When I try to download "autoroot v2.5 - Full Root Zip" gives me a "404 Page Not Found" message when trying to click on the download link. Am I doing something wrong or is this a broken link? This is what I have been running into with the 2 methods I have tried so far. I am willing to do this with adb but I would need instructions b/c my knowledge is limited. Any help appreciated.

Any luck yet?
Just curious if you had any luck, xHausx had a really good version (v2.4) but has moved onto v2.5. make sure ADB is enabled from the settings on your phone and if you want to try v2.4, PM me and I will see if I can send it to you.
No luck yet, I think 3g is down in my area right now so I will have to wait till later today to try again (wireless tether). Thanks all for the help so far. Good to know there are people here to help.

EDIT: Okay, everything is downloaded and I installed htcsync 2.0.35. I have unzipped AutoRoot v2.5 to my desktop like it says to do and I do not see "autoroot.bat" anywhere in the folder, I do see "autoroot" which is a windows batch file. How do I execute the "autoroot" file or find the "autoroot.bat" file? I tried running the "autoroot" file as administrator but it only gives me a bunch of "file not recognized" errors in the cmd window. Again, am I doing something wrong? On a side note, there seems to be no working link to unrevoked anymore so unless someone has a link I cannot root that way. All of the assistance is really appreciated. Really need to get wireless tether working. TIA.
See edit above. Sorry for the extra post.
