[Q] Q. How can i fix my epic - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im trying to odin back to stock rom but when i do it through odin it keeps failing on recovery.bin
any help will be nice thanks

Try redownloading the tar file. Might be a bad file.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!

I had this happen a lot and I don't know if it was persistance or a combo of the version of odin/ changing between the pda or phone section or what but eventually I got through it.
Word of caution.....I also fully drained my battery to the point that the phone would not charge the battery
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Try a different USB port. When it fails, pull the battery, hold power button for 30 seconds, then put battery back in and put into download mode and try again.
(if a redownload of tar didn't work)

Try a different USB cord, lots of people have had issues doing odin over the stock cable that came from samsung. Any micro USB cable should work, if you don't have one from another device, see if you can borrow one from someone or just go buy a spare, they shouldn't be too hard to find, or too expensive.

[Q] Help with Odin

I am trying to flash epic back to stock rom, but when i run odin and plug in the phone in download mode it keeps on saying it's been added and then removed repeatedly. Any help?
Windows says this?
You put the phone in download mode, start Odin and then connect the phone to the PC.
I'd check to be sure you're using the usb cable that came with your epic. Using others can have mixed results, even though they fit.
Check the connection to the phone; be sure nothing is in the connector.
Try a different usb on your PC.
Can always try to reboot the PC as well.
Good luck
Now it works, but when i select the 528 pit, it's stuck on Setup Connection, but if i use the 512 pit it just says it failed.
Going to second the try a different usb port, although if you have any other micro-usb cords that have thicker cables than the samsung one, use that for flashing.
Also may want to reset computer after you have it fail. It seems to mess with something in windows or leave a process open that keeps it from working right
Also gonna ask a dumb question, you do have a stock epic rom that you're trying to flash along with the pit and you are clicking repartition in odin right?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I was on the DK28 rom before but now since 2.2 has been released officially i want to flash to stock and then get the official version. The problem is everytime i run it, it's on the SetupConnection part but it never gets past that. no i didnt repartition it.
The only suggestion I can offer other then the usual stuff (check connections, USB ports, drivers, etc) is to redownload everything. It's possible that the download could have been corrupted for whatever reason. It's happened to me once when I was trying to Odin back to stock.
Hope this helps.
So now i got it to run, but the phone it self booted into a green screen, and in the list in Odin it's stuck on modem

First things first you are supposed to put the modem in the PDA slot, in fact i have seen K0nane say it really doesn't even matter with the modem.
1. Did your battery have some charge left before it died?
2. Have you tried using odin without the battery in?
Try this:
Disconnect USB Cable (if Connected)
Remove Battery
Reconnect USB Cable
Hold 1
Press power
If this doesn't work, then you're probably looking at a hardware replacement.

[Q] Unable to Odin/CWM restore

I have had my Epic for few months now, and have yet to encounter this error. Today both my parents decided to buy the Epic's (woot 3 epics in the house), and so I go and try to Root it for them. I go to the first one, and put CWM 3.1.0.1 on it. Everything goes fine, I reboot into CWM, everything dandy, shutdown and go into download mode (Hold 1 then press power button), done this many times. But here came the problem. Odin has failed during the flash and now the phone shows (Phone ---- ! ---- Computer) display when I try to boot it up or try to go into CWM. So I have tried Odin again with download mode, I did get the yellow download screen, but Odin keeps failing. I have tried different USB ports/cables. Different pit files and modems, including EB13, EC05 and EH06. And I am sure the files work, as I have just tried the second phone, and everything went fine. ... So yeah... uh... Attached are two screenies.
This is my Odin Print out
And this is the screen I get
NVM, got it to work using this :

There is still hope. Take out the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Leave the battery out and plug the USB into the computer and then hold the "1" key on the keyboard and then press and hold the power button. It should get you back into download mode.

I think that is caused by whether your computer has a powered or non-powered USB port.
no, because I have Odined 2 other Epics on the exactly same cable and same USB port, so it has nothing to do with that. It was truly just the battery.

[Q] help please, I think I bricked my phone

Hi everyone, this is my first post, and I'm completely baffled and think I may have bricked my phone. Here is exactly what happened.
I've been running syndicate rom with vision kernel on my samsung epic 4g on sprint for a very long time. I've been getting the upgrade notification for months, so I finally decided it was time to upgrade. Unfortunately, the way I decided to upgrade was to go back to stock, and then let it naturally upgrade. I followed the instructions at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
and, the first time I tried to odin, it was stuck at "setup connection", so after waiting a very long time, I unplugged, then re-started odin. because I used the instructions at the above link, I had re-partition, auto-reboot, and reset time checked. This time, odin was able to get past "setup connection", and was stuck on "datafs.rfs" in odin, and on the phone, it no longer showed a downloading logo and looked like it was just off. I unplugged again, and this time, I could not easily get the phone into download mode. I tried a few things with the battery in, with it out, and finally, somehow, got it into download mode again. Trying odin 1.61, I tried again, it got stuck on datafs.rfs again, and after waiting a very long time, I unplugged again.
Now, I believe my phone is bricked. The following is true of my phone right now:
it does not turn on
it does not have any lights when plugged in
if plugged in, it will not go into download mode
if on battery, i can take out the battery, then put it back in, then i can go into download mode, but when in this mode, windows reports an unrecognized usb device. if the battery is in from when it was plugged in, it will not go into download mode. the battery must be popped out and then put back in to go into download mode.
terrible timing too, as my wife is expecting, and she'll most likely need to get in touch with me in the next week or two. If anyone can help me get my phone working again, that would be amazing. Thanks in advance for your help.

Windows not recognizing a device means you don't have the proper drivers installed. I'd link them to you but I'm at work on my phone. Search google for samsung epic drivers. Or i believe you can even get them from samsung's website.
And Congratulations on the new baby.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
the link you posted has all the best instructions. Do not skip a step or circumvent any. Use the file links he has provided. And use Odin 1.85.
Take the battery out of your phone let it sit for at least 20 minutes, leave the battery out plug it into computer and attempt to get it into download mode.
Very important your not using the Samsung stock charging cable to do this. You need a good USB cable, one like the Blackberry phones come with, which is designed for heavy data transfer
Good luck.

The problem and the cause of your woes is a faulty cable. Get a heavy duty blackberry cable and try again. This time leave the battery out, using the cord as power put it into download mode with Odin already up on the computer and make sure to use the same port that it has been working in.

I actually tried a differnt cable because of the original link the first time, and that didn't work at all (used my wife's evo shift cable). But, I did find yet another micro usb cable in the house, and that one does seem to be working. Although, the odin flash does not seem to be, seems to be hanging (and the phone shows just blue across the entire screen), but that is progress =) Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll post my findings if I am successful in un-bricking. (or post where i get stuck next =P) Thanks again everyone.
When you get stuck again, Odin with the battery and sd card out.
Already took the SD card out. I can't go into download mode with just the cable though (already tried). Any recommendations? To get into download mode currently, I have to:
unplug everything
take out the battery
pop the battery back in
then, 1+power to download mode.

Sounds like either the cable still has issues or the USB port is not properly powered. If a desktop, use the USB ports in the rear right on the motherboard. I see you have had different results from different cables already, if you can just get ahold of a heavy duty Blackberry or Palm Pre cable.
How long should I wait before re-trying a new flash? It's been stuck on cache.rfs for the past 2 or 3 hours. I'll try the back usb port instead of front usb ports. I'll also try a palm cable, I think I have one lying around somewhere. Thanks for the tips.

SUCCESS!!
Following the original link, what I had to do was:
I plugged into rear usb
still wouldn't go into download mode, so unplugged, popped in battery, went into download mode, plugged in
started odin 1.61 (as in the trouble shooting part of the original link)
Used EC05 rom (as in the trouble shooting part of the original link)
my phone is back from the dead! Thanks for the help everyone.
Congrats man!

Just got back here and I also am glad you got it going. Congrats! These Epics are almost unbrickable...

Please help, odin doesnt recognize, no recovery, please help.

I can get into download mode, but odin doesn't recognize, the only other screen i get too sdays "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again, but Kies cant connect to it, am i screwed? Please help this all happened from changing my screen density, i cant find anyway too restore, i'm not a noob and am in desperate help, i'm gonna be soo bummed if i brick, but i have a feeling if i can get too download mode, there must be a way too restore it.
BbbYou say no recovery, but you should have at least stock recovery I think. Try holding volume up and power, is you can get in, restore to stock from there.
If doesn't work I would start by reinstalling the drivers or try a different computer.
You'll be fine.
Also you should state you rom, what you did before, rooted, etc

I flashed the newest version of Roman BB's AOKP CM9 Kang and tried to change the density, i went too restore my nandroid and it froze before it finished, I tried odin and the first 2 times it recognized but both froze before the end. im kinda couch surfing so now i'm incredibally screwed without a phone, please help.

Roman bb's most updated AOKP, i changed the screen density and when i went to reboot it bootlooped, so i tried restoring a nandroid wich failed, tryed again, and now i cant get too recovery, i can only get too download mode, so i tried using odin too go back too stock, it failed almost at the end, twice, now i cant get odin to recognize my phone and it wont turn on, the only thing i can do is get too download mode, and too the thing saying use kies recovery, which does nothing because it won't connect. I'm at a total lost, i'm so scared i lost my only source of income, at this point in my life, if i dont have a phone, i dont have work or food or a warm place too sleep. Please anyone with any ideas please help.
I hate to be the one to tell you this but you're probably bricked. The giveaway is if you have problems in Odin at data.img:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808
Will recommend that if you have further questions to post in that thread.
When going from ICS to anything else you should use ODIN to go back to stock. Anything else and you're risking a brick. More here:

Hope this helps.
One quick question - which phone are you using and which usb cable for odin?
Be sure that using the original usb cable during odin.

I've never heard that one before. What do you think is unique about the stock micro-usb cable?
micro usb cable is not unique. There's standard size of micro usb and pin numbers, etc. But based on the product, it's not fit well each other.
One example is old LG micro usb cable is not going well with Samsung phones.
Of course, I tried this by myself and it always fails. But original micro usb cable which comes together with phone, it never failed.

Yeah now that you mention it I realized my nook color micro usb cable has a longer metal end-piece than my E4GT, and won't connect properly. I thought the length of the metal prong would have also been standardized. Go figure.

This is the problem unless you flashed a gb kernel/recovery first. You should not do anything in ICS recovery.

Its true not all cables are the same, but the funny part is from the beginning of OG Epic days we figured out quick the only thing you should do with the stock cable is charge... its garbage. Maybe the new model is better, havent tried it, but it looked pretty much the same, thin little thing... I use my 4 year old BBerry cable, about as thick as a cat-5... never had an issue. But yeah, try new drivers, cable, diff PC, use a USB that is physically part of the Motherboard of the PC (desktop)... all these things help with the shoddy drivers, etc... you may get lucky...

But you said you did attempt a restore through CWM after the bootloop, correct? If you did and you're having problems you *may* have bricked. Using ODIN is a surefire way to confirm whether you did or not. If you didn't attempt anything through CWM while having CM9 installed then you may not be bricked but are obviously still having issues. As it has been said before - and quite often - CWM at your own risk; ODIN is believed to be the safest option.
Regardless, if you're having problems and the USB cable doesn't fix it I'll still recommend trying to get back to a GB stock ROM by ODIN. At the worst you've lost what you have done since the last backup, since you can restore that from the backup once you get back to GB. With so many bricked phones lately it may be best to err on the side of caution this time...
I've tried everything mentioned, except a different pc, i tried linux, on my pc odin doesntr recognize my phone, , but i just went and plugged a flash fdrive in so now im thinking my computer is having usb problems, so im gonna try another computer, i also made a usb jig to reset the odin counter too take it too sprint but it didnt work... i'm so confused and screwed without my phone. Sprint Epic 4G Touch Appears Bricked
My Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will no longer connect to my computer (also tried another computer and different usb cable), after a failed attempt to upgrade to ICS 4.0. The phone will not load up now to 'normal' operating mode.
It will only come up to the message:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I can no longer get into Recovery or Download modes. At least none that work. (See below)
I also built and tried the USB jig solution, which does power on the phone, but it then comes up and says:
FACTORY MODE
PRODUCT NAME" GT-19100
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (2 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
Downloading...
Do not turn off target!!
But connecting to my PC still fails. Any ideas?
