New Windows Phone Dev Tools for the next version of Windows Phone Available in May
Earlier this month at MIX we announced that we will release in May a new set of Windows Phone Developer Tools for the next version of Windows Phone. Developers can use the new tools to create the next-generation of Windows Phone apps and games, which will be faster, more capable, and more deeply integrated with the next version of Windows Phone.
The next version of Windows Phone will be available to consumers later this year and will introduce many features, such as multitasking, the best mobile Web experience with IE9 and HTML 5, support of real time communication and messaging, twitter integration with the People Hub, and a broader connectivity to Skydrive.
The new Developer Tools will allow you to write apps that make full use of multitasking via fast application switching and background agents; runtime and framework enhancements with over 1,500 new APIs and the support of Silverlight 4, access to new sensors, on-device SQL CE database, and Phone Contacts and Calendar stores; socket support to enable networking communication beyond HTTP; XNA/Silverlight Integration; and an improved Push Notification and Live Tile experience. The new Developer Tools will also include a new emulator will full support for accelerometer and GPS location data.
We are very excited about the opportunities the new release will create for developers, and we look forward to the next wave of innovation in apps and games.
For more details on the new features supported by the next version of Windows Phone and the new Developer Tools check out the MIX Webcasts!
Extended Marketplace Opportunities in the next version of Windows Phone
Also at MIX, we presented a comprehensive list of new features that will improve the Windows Phone Marketplace experience for both consumers and developers with the next version of Windows Phone.
For consumers, the new Windows Phone Marketplace experience will include an improved design with panes and more panoramas, a better search experience with autocomplete queries and search results grouped by app, music, or games sections. A new jump list and a soft-search button will make it easier to find installed apps on Windows phones. (fiinix: well, the leaked search button, that a guy by accident cam'ed (Link to post))
For developers, the new Windows Phone Marketplace experience will introduce new Beta and Private Distribution services and a more streamlined app submission flow. More details on the certification status of apps will be available in the App Lifecycle tab and an updated Dashboard will provide notifications and important performance indicators. Developers will also be able to perform more granular data analysis and filtering with the ability to export data from the download and payout reports to XML.
Finally, we will extend the reach of the Windows Phone Marketplace from 16 to 35 countries, increasing the market potential for your apps and games. The 19 new end-user countries are:
Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and Taiwan. (fiinix: Yay! Netherlands and Sweden (My countries get Marketplace, no need to cross UK account anymore?))

Nice!
Chile will have full marketplace support now!

Can we imagine hackers May be port Mango on devices from the SDK tools release in May?

Thanks for the info
Will developers have access to mango beta at the same time ? I think it was mentioned in MIX 11 that there will be a beta version available for download.

I have asked the WP7 support via Twitter and they said nothing has been announced officially :-(
Anyhow I think there will be a beta version before the official, we just don't know when.

yeah saw that email. Nice cant wait to play with it.
What I dont understand is if you compile an app using these new apis will we be able to test it on a device and submit it to the marketplace or do we need seperate tools and compile for pre mango without those apis and post mango?
That will be a bit ****, certainly if there is no mango for devs so we cant test on real devices.

It will be the same as when devs were given access to the emulator before the RTM release of Windows Phone. Some developers will be given Mango to test on - just like some people received developer devices.
Most of us will not be able to test the changes on devices until Mango is released. Only high-profile clients and a limited number of developers will most likely have access to a Mango build.

highly doubt that rumor is true. Microsoft nl said dutch language support will come, this is why existing users bought wp7 they promised the support coming in april with nodo but it became mango. It would be stupid not to give them the native language support after promises and delays of approx 6 months (assumin mango in september). We will get our dutch language support, thats what I read and what I believe. It wont boost sales if they will treat their customers otherwise. Just a brainless rumor and I believe they even misquoted their french source (bad translation, causes a bunch of brainless panic). Certainly in our country and the other new language supported countries being multi-lingual is very important so those languages (the current plus the native) are essential.

Android Market separation?

Hi,
If someone can explain this to me ...
I found out that there is separation on Android Market, user from certain countries cannot purchase certain apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6046360&postcount=4
Why is that?
So, if I am in the UK, I can only purchase apps that are available ONLY for UK market?
I could not think any single reason of this kind of decision will help the customers and the developers.
Why is it not just ONE SINGLE Android Market for EVERYONE?
Well. Nobody really knows. Its very annoying. Its the same story here in Denmark. No paid apps on non-rootet phones with Market enabler.
HTC and google can not give us an answer to why or when paid apps will be availble for us.
Indeed, this is very annoying and I could not think any benefit of it.
I am just wondering, is there anything like this on iPhone? There is in WM, but I believe Microsoft decided to change that on WP7.
I hope Google will change this decission to make Android more attractive to software developers.
I suspect that the country filtering is present for several reasons.
1. Country specific applications. There is no need for an app that only applies to i.e. the UK to be displayed in Asia or in the US.
2. Copyright and trademark issues. Arrangements needs to be done in each country as laws are different.
3. Localization. I assume that Google does not want to add paid apps support in countries not yet fully localized to the local language. This was the case when Android was initially released. The G1 was released in the UK and in the US, and paid apps did not become avaliable until Android had been localized to for example German or French. Once the translations were complete, paid apps followed shortly after.
While Android is currently localized to several other languages, Norwegian included, these translations are far from complete, and needs some additional work.
Hopefully it should not take so long, but hey, who knows.
I will download the localization strings in a short while, and try to perfect them a bit more. After all, Android is open source.
Actually it does make sense for some application to be available in only one country. To give you an example, why would someone in the UK be interested in an application about traffic in Copenhagen? When a developer publishes his app he can chose to make it available for all countries or just for specific countries. Blackberry App World has something like this and I'm not 100% sure but I think the iphone also.
And what if you want go to Copenhagen?
Are free aps also separated or is it just payed ones?

Exactly! Also, I don't think copyright would have anything to do with it. AFAIK, it wouldn't matter which country you made your app available to. If it's copyrighted and you disctribute it, you're in trouble.
I can't imagine google getting involved in copyright issues for each and every app. Im pretty sure they would shift liability to the developer/provider in their terms and conditions.
Localisation exists for the following reasons.
1. Language. You can make 1 app that supports all languages, but if there is a lot of text this would cause the app to bloat with unnecessary stuff. simpler to make apps for each language/region.
2. Localisation. The dev may decide there is no point in his app being available outside his particular locale. The first App i noticed this with was to do with the American Presidential elections. Of course I can still see a lot of US specific Transport Apps here in the UK, because the dev has decided it would be worthwile people from other regions having them (holidaymakers for instance).
3. Payment. If you set up an app for worldwide distribution it is priced in your own local currency. If you price an App for a specific region it is priced in that regions currency. This means the price of an app will not fluctuate with exchange rates, which may make people more likely to buy.
I live in Denmark, and as i understand it, the reason why we cannot have the payed apps here are because Google and the telephone companies have not agreed about how the payment modells are to work.
-They both want to big a cut of the cake.
Heh, the funny thing is that Google owns Admob, and their own Adwords service. They essentially makes a lot of money regardless of whether the developer chooses to support it through ads or through direct sales.
I stumbled across this website last night which lists (what looks like) every app on the Android marketplace, along with a QR Code (3D Barcode).
http :// www . cyrket . com
Could this be a workaround to be able to get hold of applications not available in certain countries? It's just that I can't help but notice japanese titles on there with a Yen price next to them.
I've just ordered my Desire today, but have been trying to find out which apps are available - I'm a little annoyed you can't just browse them on the android marketplace website!
Usually the QR code is just for a marketplace search, if it isn't available in your location or phone then you still can't download it.
The only way to bypass this is direct purchase from the developer or downloading the apk to install with an apkinstaller.
Then why there is not any alternative market?
You know, just a website which developer can submit their app there ... accessible via special app from the phone ... do the transaction via web
Like download.com Or cydia for the iPhone?
Microsoft will do it (single unified app market place) with WP7, why not Google? Strange ...
Ah I see, bugger... That's a shame.
Surely it's down to the developer to make it a global rather than a regional app on publishing to the marketplace?

MiX2011(12-14.04)-Will There Be Any New"additions" to wp7 ANOTHER UPDATE BEFORE MANGO

MiX2011(12-14.04)-Will There Be Any New"additions" to wp7 ANOTHER UPDATE BEFORE MANGO
The MiX conference is just around the corner and i thought that it would be interesting to see what the users think, hope, want software vise.....
On the other hand, maybe a new handset will be revealed or the new minimum requirements...
With certainty new api's will be introduced...
My hope is for another update in june-july...
The things I would like to see in this order:
#1 Open up APIs that use address book which will open the door for whatsapp and skype.
#2 Bug fixes.
#3 An improved way of delivering updates.
#4 More new features.
I expect announcements of other upcoming features which have not yet been announced.
I fully expect some of the API's to be opened up to developers.
Maybe an announcement of a smaller update which will come out before Mango.
I don't expect any phone announcements, but maybe some Nokia teasers? That would be pretty cool.

I made a bit of a list myself. Well, it's kind of large: http://n8ter.wordpress.com
Skype is a bit meh for me.
There is more to gain by developing a good Windows Live Messenger integration with VoIP and Video Calling, in addition to Facebook Chat and Integrated Presence information in the People Hub. Add in Push Notifications, Group Chat, and File Transfer from the Office/Picture Hubs and it would be just perfect.
They need to add Tasks to Hotmail and add Task Synchronization to WP7's ActiveSync support.
The rest is in the link above. Don't want to bloat up the thread listing all my thoughts...
IE9 needs to be pushed out the minute it's done. Just upgrading IE would be considered a ridiculously big update to many users, and seriously... It would make tons of websites either usable, or much much easier to use.
A Basic RSS Reader integrated into the Platform (with configurable polling times and notifications on new items) would be nice. However, Windows Live allows you to subscribe to Blogs from there, so maybe that serves that purpose and you can just get this form people HUB.
They need to make Facebook Pushed, IMO. And add support for giving Push Notifications adn a counter on the People Hub tile when you get a new Direct Message/Facebook Message/Mention. Perhaps they can roll out Twitter support early.
I think it's pretty bad that they're holding back so much for one big update. I wonder how many people at Microsoft are actually closet iOS/Android users. They don't seem to be clued in much with the way they're iterating on the platform.
I expect nothing new so that I don't get disappointed again.
My wish list:
- ful Skydrive integration so all office documents can be synced
- Twitter integration in the people hub
- some way to allow zune streaming music and video not only to the XBox but to the WP7 devices as well
New apis like above said to make whatsapp available, youtube embedded vids working properly on all regions, bing maps merged with ovi so i can actually use maps, skydrive for office, taskswitcher and facebook im/private messages integerated in messaging app (a pivot next to sms would be cool) and people hub. Ill be a more than happy guy, will be all i need
Interesting if they will show anything we don't already know there.
Talks about NoDo and more Mango previews. Maybe a mention of some API, maybe, and that is all. Any bets?

One of the few times we agree 100%. MSN Messenger by Miyowa is not good enough. If MSN Messenger was as feature-rich as you described I would buy a WP7 phone tomorrow.
If there are no new APIs I will be very surprised. And if there aren't, as much as I love my Omnia7, I'm picking up an Xperia Play the very next day. I can understand not having some functionality, but not providing APIs to developers is just plain stupid.

Yep, the lack of functionality isn't what stinks. Developers can develop apps to fill those voids.
What stinks is the API blackholes in the platform. That pretty much makes this functionally is impossible to implement at the moment, and there is nothing you or any non-OEM/Microsoft developer can do about it.
You guys shouldn't really expect much in the way of new features. MIX is where the development platform was unveiled last year, I imagine any announcements will be centered around that.
I'm expecting a focus on IE9, hopefully some additional APIs like sockets (which they said has been the #1 request from developers).

Dear Windows Marketplace for Mobile Developer,
We are excited about the momentum we have with Windows Phone. Since we launched Windows Phone last fall, technical reviews have been very positive and, most importantly, customer satisfaction has been extremely high. Moreover, our Windows Phone Marketplace continues to grow at a fast pace. It now features more than 15,000 apps and games and there are over 40,000 registered developers.
At MIX we announced that in May we will release the beta version of the Windows Phone Developer Tools for the next version of Windows Phone, code-named "Mango," which we are still on track to do. The Mango release will be made available to users later this year, and it represents the next step in our continued focus on advancing the Windows Phone platform and expanding the opportunity for developers.
To innovate faster on the Windows Phone Marketplace, we are scaling back our investments in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile service. We are sharing this plan with you, in advance, so that you can make thoughtful plans and preparations.
• App Submission and Management. On July 15, 2011, we will no longer be accepting new Windows Mobile 6.x applications or application updates. In addition, it will no longer be possible to modify prices, metadata, or other information. However, you will still be able to remove your apps by contacting support.
• App Distribution. Even though app submission will stop on July 15, users will still be able to purchase and download your Windows Mobile 6.x applications through the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.
• App Reporting. Sales and download reports will continue to be available for your Windows Mobile 6.x applications through the App Hub after July 15.
• Developer Payouts. Developer payouts will continue to be processed in accordance with the provisions of the Windows Phone Marketplace Application Provider Agreement.
Additional information regarding the scaling back of our investment in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile will be shared over the coming months as plans become finalized.
We would like to thank you for being part of our Windows Marketplace for Mobile developer community, and we look forward to helping you build more Windows Phone applications.
For more information, please visit the App Hub Forum. For further assistance, please contact support directly.
Thank you for your support,
The Windows Phone Marketplace Team

And what about the futur of Windows Embedded Handeld??
Sorry to be late posting this but it contains information about the shutdown of 'My Phone' and the Windows Mobile App Store on the Web:
Shut-down of Windows Marketplace for Mobile Web Site and My Phone Service Notification
June 8, 2011
Dear Windows Mobile 6.x customer:
Microsoft will be discontinuing the My Phone service for Windows Mobile 6.x. We will also be discontinuing the Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site. Because you may be affected, please review the details below:
Windows Marketplace for Mobile Web Site To Be Discontinued
The Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site at http://marketplace.windowsphone.com will no longer be available starting on July 15, 2011. After July 15, 2011, you will no longer be able to browse, buy or download applications for Windows Mobile 6.x phones via the Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site.
The Windows Marketplace for Mobile service will continue to be available on your phone, however. You will continue to be able to browse, buy and download applications for Windows Mobile 6.x on your phone.
My Phone To Be Discontinued
On August 7, 2011, the My Phone service will stop saving content from phones to the My Phone service. If you rely on the My Phone service to back-up the content on your Windows Mobile 6.x phone, you will be affected.
Starting on August 7, 2011, Microsoft will begin moving your My Phone content to Windows Live SkyDrive. SkyDrive is Microsoft's free online storage service that helps you access and share your files such as photos and Microsoft Office documents. Contacts, calendar entries, text messages and photos will be moved to SkyDrive for you. Once moved, you will be able to access this content by logging into SkyDrive using the Windows Live ID that you used to register for the My Phone service.
Other content types, including videos, music, documents and favorites will not be moved from My Phone to SkyDrive for you. If you want this content, you must save it from the My Phone service to your local PC.
On October 6, 2011, the My Phone web site at http://www.microsoft.com/myphone will no longer be available. On this date, you will no longer be able to log in to the My Phone service to access your content stored to the My Phone service. Microsoft is committed to making this transition easy. In the meantime, we want to sincerely thank you for your use of Windows Mobile 6.x.
-The Windows Phone Team
I think this just made the transition to Android a little easier and moved up my date also.

Microsoft Announces Windows Phone Mango Update Coming At The Beginning Of The Summer

Mango may no longer be a secret in and of itself, but we doubt Microsoft would've set up an entire event to preview its big Windows Phone update if there was nothing hidden up that Redmond sleeve. To that end, we've just come across an official press release from the company, released on its Romanian website. The machine translation awaits after the break.
The first thing to note is that the update will be "freely available" to all current Windows Phone handsets, something Microsoft already committed to, and will be ready for download "at the beginning of this summer." Naturally, the new goodness will also figure in new devices and from new partners, including Acer, Fujitsu, and ZTE. Those fresh faces join Nokia and the incumbent partners of Dell, HTC, Samsung, and LG to expand the WP ecosystem.
A Beta SDK of the new Windows Phone free tools will be available within 24 hours, we're promised, for developers to sink their teeth into.
In the communications department, Microsoft is introducing conversation threads, which seamlessly transition between MSN Messenger chats, SMS, and other messaging to keep you talking to the same person irrespective of the method. New contact group tiles are also incoming, with the ability to send quick emails or IMs to entire groups. Twitter and LinkedIn contact integration is mentioned, though we expect this go a lot deeper in Twitter's case, as Microsoft has already demonstrated.
Speaking of more in-depth integration, Microsoft has improved the Live Tiles to allow the display of more dynamic information

[APP] Next2Me for Windows Phone 7 released

Hi Guyz,
Perhaps you all know Next2Me for the Windows Mobile 6.x OS. This app was quite successfull (one of the 10 most downloaded apps in the Marketplace) and also here at XDA-Developers, quite many people liked my tiny app. If you don't know it, here is the link to the corresponding thread: http://xda-developers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=619329
So, why am I writing here? Because I am going to port Next2Me to Windows Phone 7. And I want YOU to participate on that ! I don't want you to code for me, but you have the great chance now, to submit your feature requests here, to get the software you always wanted to have !
The port of Next2Me is quite envolved by now, and it is already working, so I would be able to send the current state of the software to the Marketplace. But I just want to let you send your feature requests, to get Next2Me even better as it was and now is.
Current feature list of Next2Me
o Location based business search using Google Local Search
o Show a map overview with all found businesses
o Show detailed information (address, phone numbers, etc.)
o Let you add the infos to the contact list, forward the contact by E-Mail or SMS or call the found phone number right from Next2Me
o Show your position and the target contact on a map and the route to the target
o Give you a directions to guide you to the target
So, as you can see, the software is quite envolved by now.
What features will also be implemented:
o Support different local search providers (Wikipedia, Bing, Yahoo?, Yelp?)
o Support free text search for local search
If you are still missing any features, THIS is your chance! Post your feature wish here, let's discuss about it and perhaps it will be implemented !
[UPDATE 10-19-2011]
Next2Me v1.0 has been released in the Marketplace. You can find it here.
Next2Me will be devided into a free and payed version. The free version will show a small ad at the top of the main window. The payed version won't show this. Also the payed version will received new features before the free one and some features will be in the payed version only. But the core element of Next2Me, the local search, will stay free.
But, If you'll buy Next2Me (I am planning to sell it for 99Cent), you will not just get rid of the ad and get some unique features, you will also support me and my dev projects .
Feel free to post any question or suggestions regarding Next2Me here !

i got a little idea. It would be cool if you could set it up so that everyday at a certain time it would set its self automaticlly to go somewhere. So if you leave for work at 7 everyday it would set its self for that location. Also would be cool to able to send your location to other people
I like the idea with sending your current location to other people. I think I will implement this feature ..
But: what do you mean with the other feature, setting your position at a specific time? Why should I do that? Every WP7 device has a built in GPS sensor, so I do have the current location at any time..
This sounds good, Bing does not provide Local search for my country so I need something else to give me access to Google's excellent business listings.
Will this be free / paid / trial-ware?
Next2Me WP7 release
Sorry guys for this long delay..
Finally, I released Next2Me for Windows Phone 7. You can get for free from the Marketplace.
The next version is already in work, with several more features.

I just had a look on the voice recognition, but I think I must disappoint you. There isn't an API for that at the moment and I don't want to rebuild a voice recognition myself. There are several solutions using web services, but this solution would be slow and doesn't work very well. Microsoft is already working on an own Siri called TellMe! I already registered myself for that API and as soon this is available on WP7 I'll implement this feature in Next2Me .
