I can't tell if it's amoled or slcd. Under hardware version is says 0002, which is supposed to be amoled, but this was a phone fixed by that insurance company (ausuron?), and then I purchased the phone after that. So I don't know if the 0002 means anything.
I went in a dark area and rebooted the phone. On the dark areas (droid logo), it looked ALMOST completely black. If I looked closely, I could see a little white (very little), so I don't know.
Is there anything else I can do to see what I have?

It's an AMOLED.
And, can you actually replace an AMOLED screen with an SLCD and not have any problems? Just wondering, incase I ever bust my screen.
Mine says 0003. What does that mean?
SLCD screen

No. I tried replacing with a different type and it didn't work. There is a difference in the power handling. All it displayed were lines of all different colors.
Ok, that rules out his insurance company or whatever replacing it with a non AMOLED panel then.

Which is better? Mine is SLCD I believe... 0003
Depends on who you are as to whether which one is better.
I personally dig the amoled because of the contrast. I like vivid colors though and I'm a graphic designer so I see all this crap other people don't see

Recently had my phone back from HTC for dust removal and I'm not entirely sure if they've changed the screen to SLCD. The rom has been updated to 0.83, but they tell me they always update the rom when a phone comes in for repair.
Is there a program I can safely run to determine this?
On a black background you will see a grey sheen at certain angles if it's SLCD.
You will likely see light "leaking" around the edges of the screen too
From what I've read on a dutch site is that when your screen is Amoled, the box will say something about a 3.7" Amoled screen.
But when it's SLCD the box will say something about a beautiful 3.7" screen.
turn off your device, then turn it back on while holding the volume down button, at the top of the screen make a not of your hboot version, if you have hboot 0.83.0000000 then you have an lcd screen any others and its amoled

This is not true.
Sorry... wrong post.
I've not seen an S-TFT desire, but I'd think it unlikely it has the pen-tile subpixel arrangement, so if you can see that then it's probably AMOLED.
I personally find this most noticeable during power-up - the white startup screen has a green fringe down one side and a red one down the other.
I would have thought that they would have given you the same type of screen as you had before.
Thanks for all the replies. When I view pictures in the HTC gallery, (tap on one them first to view the pic without the share and trashcan icon etc), the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (ie outside the picture area) look exactly the same as when switched off, i.e. no backlight at all visible. Does this pretty much confirm its amoled? Perhaps somebody with a SLCD Desire could confirm if they can see a backlight in these areas

Got a new Desire on Saturday (from mobiles.co.uk), and mine does not mention AMOLED on the box next to Display, it just say 3.7 inch touch sensitive screen.
I'm guessing it's a SLCD then, still looks good.

I have a desire with SLCD and I can see the indication of "HTC desire LCD" in the battery compartment, see attachment. I do not know if other owners of SLCD screen have this also.

I've just had a look at mine and it doesn't mention that, and I think I've got an LCD because the box didn't say AMOLED.
Ok mine is amoled. Just want to ask which one is the better amoled or slcd?

There are far too many threads discussing that already!
Ever since I got my droid incredible I've been rather disappointed with the screen. I'd say its the best device on Verizon aside from the poor battery life (fixed by slipping in a 1500mah battery) and the pentile matrix AMOLED screen. I love the vibrant colors it produces, but I'm a web junkie on my phone. This means that 90% of the time I'm looking at a pure white screen thus contributing to more battery drain and blurry text all thanks to the AMOLED screen.
So when I heard that they would start replacing AMOLED with SLCD, I got a little happy. Not too happy, because I'm stuck with an AMOLED version. I'm almost two months into my dinc ownership and would like then next 16-22 months to be a little more readable.
I got to thinking, I could sell this and buy a new one, yada yada, but what about doing a screen replacement myself? I've seen it done on youtube and it doesn't look terribly hard. But I have a few reservations:
1. Would my current hardware (version 02) accept a SLCD screen? I noticed that the new hardware version with the SLCD is 03, so I don't know if there's a firmware issue here.
2. Can you even buy SLCD replacements yet? I've looked around a bit and many stores offer "LCD Replacements". I don't understand what is meant by that since AMOLED screens are that I've known of to be available to incredibles. Are they cheap unofficial TFT panels? I'm after the juicy IPS panel SLCD, I'd rather keep my AMOLED than a cheap LCD. My concern is that they won't ever become available.
3. Performing such in depth hardware surgery will surely void my warranty and put me at risk to ruin my phone. This is a given though.
If anyone has any info regarding those above points then please share your knowledge. Thanks for reading and hopefully others have thought about this as well
SLCD is junk, it isn't a good thing that they're replacing the screens, they're doing it because Samsung is using all their smiled and super amoled screens on their own devices, thus being back ordered for everybody else. There's a reason HTC used the smiled first, if the SLCD was any better they would have used it.
I completely disagree w/ ogkhaze I actually never considered the incredible until it got the slcd. Amoled sucks imo. I hate the over saturated colors and the pentile's pixel layout. The slcd has better color accuracy and text is nice and clear.
Dunno how the fact that amoled was used first makes it any better.
Anyways you can try getting your phone replaced I.e. with your warranty but make sure you request one with an slcd. Dunno if that will work though
Getting a replacement seems like a decent way to go about it, but I'd need a legitimate reason (I'd think) and I don't have the first idea how to con that
Obviously there are varying opinions on the screen types... SLCD is better for my uses, but AMOLED has its merits as well.
Well if you're trying to get a replacement you can always go the insurance route and hope you get SLCD or you can say that you're phones speaker is blown they aren't going to check it and call you out or anything.

Verizon replaced my phone when I told them that my phone was rebooting all the time, at complete random, and without any rhyme or reason. Granted, it actually WAS having problems, but if you warranty the thing and they find no issues, what will they do, ask for the replacement back? I doubt it.
Say the AMOLED burned in in the corner, where it says AM/PM. People had woahs like that with the N1 and the notification bar. Demand you get an SLCD replacement so it doesn't happen again. If it works for you I'll try the same, I want an SLCD so I can use a white notification bar and not worry about suffering the N1's fate
I just received a replacement phone in the mail and when I booted it up the white HTC Incredible logo screen seems to be pink compared to my other Dinc (slcd).
Maybe they sent an AMOLED, or is the screen just screwed up? When comparing an SLCD to an AMOLED model, is the screen of the AMOLED more of a pinkish hue??
If not, I have to call Asurion and let them know that this phone is junked. Has anyone compared the 2?

Pink? Like if you look at a white screen (even bootup) it's noticeably pink? I've had both the AMOLED and the SLCD. The difference between the 2 that I've found is that with the SLCD you can see the individual pixels and the colors don't seem as vivid. With the AMOLED colors are bright and you can't see the individual pixels. I can't say I noticed any differences in hue between the 2 screens.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it IS the SLCD, just a effed up one. That's TWO DUDS in a row that I've got from Asurion. The first one wouldn't connect to GPS and now this one obviously has a defective screen. I miss my original AMOLED Dinc....

You can check if its SLCD or AMOLED by checking the hardware version; settings -> about phone -> hardware information. If its 0002 its AMOLED, if its 0003 its SLCD.

thanks for that information... damn, the first phone they sent me was an AMOLED. I hope the next phone is too. But seriously, Asurion is sending out defective devices.

I just read that some of the AMOLED screens have a pink hue. Some more than others and some not at all. I guess it's up to you if you want to send it back though. I would.

How do i know if my DInc is amoled or slcd? my screen smashed so i been using a rooted fascinate for the past few months, but miss my dinc. ordered new digitizer and housing on amazon today so once i get it im switching back. prob way too much info after that question,so back to the point. how can i find out what kind i have?
There should be a model number on the box the phone came in and on the back of the phone (under the battery I think). If it ends in 002 its AMOLED, 003 is SLCD.

Yeah there is a model number in the upper left corner of the label under the battery adr6300vw3 or vw2 will be there vw2 is amoled vw3 is slcd. You can also see this in settings> about phone> hardware information the first entry will be 003 or 002.
That's right, vw2 or vw3. Under settings>about phone its 002 or 003, but since his screen is smashed I don't think that'll help.
To add to that question, does it make a difference to the phone which screen is on it. Could you order an amoled and replace a slcd or vice versa?

It use to make a difference when it first came out for rooting it. If you rooted it with unrevoked it would brick your phone or wreck it in some way. When I just recently replaced my phone at best buy I had an amoled and it got replaced with an slcd unfortunately.
If you're replacing the digitizer though, it doesn't matter. The actual display screen is below that. Good luck replacing the digitizer, it's a serious PITA. Lots of sticky foam must be cut away and then you need to apply new sticky stuff. The display screen is easy enough, but the digitizer...PITA.
So while i was replacing the digitizer on this beauty, the lcd flex must have broken inside because it didnt seem like it so i have no display
also the optical button flex broke (Now im really screwed Tiny)
So im looking into ordering a samsung amoled screen from ebay even though my hardware version is the slcd version
Is it compatible or were there just screen changes and not motherboard changes when HTC said they're going to slcd for these devices?

I dont believe they are interchangable. Something to do with a graphics chip or something, ive seen this asked and answered somewhere here on xda before. Mabey someome who knows for sure will chime in.
Well this is unfortunate. And the fact that SLCD screens are more expensive than the amoleds online.
Can someone else confirm that they are not interchangable?

I would think they are but I don't know either way. The best thing for you to do is an xda or Google search into this.

I did some googling but couldnt find much. Found a lot of people asking but no one answering. I saw one thread where a guy said he did it, but when he turned it on he just got a pink screen. He wasnt sure if it was because of the screen type change, or if he just messed something up when putting it back together. Then the thread just died. The connectors on both are the same. I did notice though on some sites selling slcd replacements that there are 2 different types of slcd screen that shipped with the inc, and they make it sound as though they are not interchangable. You could try to contact htc, but who knows what would come of that.
They are not interchangable. AMOLED and SLCD. The way the pixels receive signal is different. AMOLED can turn individual pixels on/off while LCD can only change their color. They need different chips/drivers to work properly.
